Jim Webb has been an instrumental force in the success of the Waukee High School golf teams and getting youth involved in the game of golf. Webb, the General Manager and Golf Pro at Sugar Creek Golf Course in Waukee, has been putting on clinics and camps for the youth in Waukee and the surrounding areas since he came to Sugar Creek in 2007. He had hosted large clinics at the course he worked at before Sugar Creek, and wanted to get the momentum for golf going in the Waukee area. Since his first year with the clinics, in which he saw about 80 golfers of all ages during 4 different camps, Webb has increased to over 300 students this past summer. The camps have also been categorized into peewee, intermediate, and advanced levels along with age. Webb says that teaching is one of the more fun parts of being a Pro. If you dont teach or play golf theres no reason to be a Pro. Webb
says it also helps the pros keep their own game up. Webb has an accomplished team of Pros who help out with his camps. Chad Proehl is a PGA Player of the year, while Judd Gibb is a two time Iowa PGA Teacher of the Year. Sarah Bidney is the first female to receive the Teacher of the Year award for the Iowa PGA, which she won in 2010. Since getting involved with the programs Webb started at Sugar Creek, the Waukee High School Girls golf team has finished in the top three at state the last two years. Webb also likes the clinics because it brings kids in to play golf with their parents, grandparents, and even friends. Webb likes how the kids keep coming back if they have a great time. The clinics mostly see kids from around the Waukee area and surrounding towns like Adel and Van Meeter, but they have drawn kids from as far away as Perry and the Cedar Rapids area.
Jim Webb Golf Background: PGA Head Professional at Sugar Creek Teaching: Jim has been teaching professionally for 18 years. Specializing in junior golf camps, Jim has expanded Sugar Creeks Junior Golf Program to include 250+ students per summer. In addition to his duties as General Manager and Head Golf Professional at Sugar Creek, he also performs several hundred individual golf lessons per season. Jim is also a lead instructor for Kevin Beards Operation State Champ winter program and is a staff member for JD Turner Corporate Golf Schools. Education: Iowa State University -1991 Golfing: Member of Iowa State H.S. Team Champions (DSM Lincoln)-1983; Match Play Qualifier USGA Junior Am1985; Match Play Qualifier USGA Publinks Championship-1987,1989; NCAA Individual Qualifier-1990; ISU Team Captain 19891991; Member of several Iowa Cup Teams; Winner of several Iowa Section PGA tournaments.

Bravard, Gochenour and Spencer Named ISCs H.S. Senior Athletes of the Year
Tony Atzeni ISC Radio Account Manager What a fantastic 2010-2011 season in Iowa high school sports . It was a very balanced group when it came to the young men and women and very hard in most cases to separate them. In the end Connor Bravard was named our Iowa Sports Connection Senior Male Iowa High School Athletes of the Year. Connor led the Maroons to the Class 4A state football title this past season and was named to the ISC 1st Team in Class 4A as a quarterback. The dual threat was mobile and dangerous with his arm in the passing game and his feet Connor Bravard, in the running game. His diving effort on a 2-point conversion in the state title Dowling Catholic game was typical of his leadership and desire to give his all on the field. Bravard passed for nearly 2,200 yards and ran for nearly 1,200 yards and scored and combined for 39 touchdowns. Connor is also one of the leading hitters in the state in Class 4A and part of the state champion Maroons baseball team. During the regular season, Bravard led the Maroons in runs batted in and was flawless in the field. Connor will keep his talents in state as he will attend the University of Northern Iowa with a football scholarship this fall. Listed below are the finalists: Connor Bravard, Dowling Catholic Austin Blythe, Williamsburg Austin Christensen, Cedar Rapids Kennedy Dustin Clark, Guthrie Center Austin Ebertowski, Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln Taylor Kauffman, Glenwood Derrick Loveless, Solon Tim Olejniczak, Ankeny Christian Academy Seth Tuttle, West Fork Ethan Westphal, Martensdale-St. Marys

When it came down to the young ladies the choice was a very difficult one. In the end the decision was to name two outstanding young ladies this season: Jadyn Spencer and Alex Gochenhour. Alex is a multi-sport talent and not only one of the top track and field athletes in the state but nationally. Last season Gochenhour was part of the USA Track and Field Championships and was the heptathlon junior champion for those 19 and Alex Gochenour, under and qualified for the IAAF World Junior Logan-Magnolia Championships where she finished 10th in the world. At the state meet Gochenhour won all four events she entered which included the 100 and 400 meter dash and 100 and 400 meter hurdles in Class 2A. Jadyn is another multi-sport star and will attend the University of Alabama to play softball next fall. Spencer also was all-state in basketball and track and field. This past season Spencer was named to the ISC Class 4A All-State 1st team in basketball. Spencer averaged 17.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Spencer also qualified in the shot put at the Drake Relays and co-ed track and field championships where she won the title in Class 4A with a toss of 41-09.75. This season in softball Spencer led Class 4A in batting, home runs, base on balls, runs scored, stolen bases and strikeouts and in in the top five in E.R.A while posting a 25-8 record in the circle. Spencer also set the all-time career home run record in Iowa high school softball this season. Listed below are the finalists: Alex Gochenour, Logan- Magnolia Jadyn Spencer, Waterloo West Taylor Greenfield, Ballard, Huxley Shelby Houlihan, Sioux City East Karen Hutson, Logan-Magnolia Virginia Johnson, Iowa City High Kiah Stokes, Linn-Mar, Marion

Remsen-Union won the district title and lost in the second round of the playoffs. Look for KingsleyPierson to make a strong jump and contend for the title this season with the return of Tate Rohde at quarterback with his 2,400 yards of total offense and 41 touchdowns, 25 passing. St. Marys (Remsen) returns Cody Colling at quarterback and will once again be part of the district battle.

Armstrong-Ringsted is once again the home of the 8-player championship. Can they continue the run they have had the past five seasons? If they do, Dakota Oderman will be a good leader with his running ability and leadership on defense. West Bend-Mallard should be one to keep your eye on if anybody can dethrone Mustangs from the district title.

Northeast Hamilton (Blairsburg) lost their only game last season in the state quarterfinals and once again has Marcus Mechaelsen back who ran for 2,100 yards and passed for another 1,200 and was responsible for 52 touchdowns in the process. District rival Tripoli was the team that ended their season. Clarksville was young in many areas last season and now can use that to their benefit this season with the experience they gained. Ventura would like to think they will improve for a playoff spot as well.

Preston was perfect through the regular season but lost in the second round of the playoffs. Season outlook once again looks bright with the Jason Feddersen and Blake Tebbe back with their combined 2,500 yards of offense. Add the players part of the East central program that was dissolved and the already good add depth. West Central (Maynard) has tradition and a group they can improve around to be a challenger for the district title. Dunkerton and Midland (Wyoming) look to improve for playoff spots.

Moravia was one of the surprise stories last season with their unbeaten regular season, but ended up falling in the 1st round of the playoffs. Back for the Mohawks with his 1,400 yards on the ground is Tyler McDanel. Grandview Park Baptist brings back some experience after their runnerup finish in the districts, Others in this district feel they have a shot at an upper division finish like Seymour and Meskwaki Settlement with their passing games and Melcher Dallas with some holes to replace but at the same time some experience to grow around and Twin Cedars (Bussey) with their running game.

Lenox has been not just good but nearly unbeatable over the past three seasons and d when you have that kind of tradition you know who the easy choice is, but this looks to be a year where they can be tested with major graduation losses. Adair-Casey also has tradition in the 8-player games and return Clayton Plowman in the backfield to lead the way. Murray and CAM (Anita) look once again to make progress after playoff appearances last season. Lamoni was very young last year but gained experience and hope to improve as well.

Tradition is big in Tiger country so unless something strange happens you would have to be reaching not to pick Madrid until someone proves they are capable of beating them in district play. Van Meter and Guthrie Center are always solid playoff contenders and Earlham was young last year and should improve on that experience in a tough district.

Conference Outlook
Bedford won the district title last year but this season the district is a tough one to pick. I would lean toward those with past success, which includes the Bulldogs and A-H-S-T (Avoca) but nothing will surprise me here. Add the fact that West Harrison (Mondamin) has consolidated with Missouri Valley and is no longer a member of the district just makes each district game huge.

When you say Emmetsburg, everyone thinks football and why not? The E-Hawks won yet another district title and lost to eventual state champions and district runner-up, rival West Lyon (Inwood). The running game is in good hands once again with Andrew Wellik and Marcus Akridge who combined for 2,000 yards and 24 touchdowns. West Lyon should be around despite graduation losses and South OBrien (Paulina) hopes to improve with a nice, experienced group of back. Another team that went through growing pains last year was Pocahontas Area/ Pomeroy-Palmer.

Aplington-Parkersburg won the district title last season with an unblemished regular season. Dike-New Hartford was third but played their best football down the stretch all the way to the Class 1A title game where they lost to West Lyon (Inwood). Both will no doubt be the teams to beat again this season as the Falcons return Jason Grill in the backfield and the Wolverines return Josh Rekers at quarterback. One thing for sure when you look at the others in the district is that you have to come ready as Saint Ansgar will be tough, Nashua-Plainfield will be better and Garner-Hayfield will be in the thick of the race with Jace Engstler and his 2,600 yards in the air and 30 touchdowns at quarterback.

Woodward-Granger has built a pretty solid football program. Scary thing is they have a real nice group back this year led by Andrew McCune and his 1,800 yards on the ground and Taylor Ashman and his nearly 1,500 yards passing. The season ended in the quarterfinals to eventual state runner-up Dike-New Hartford. Cale Henke is back for Hudson under center and GladbrookReinbeck should once again be challengers.

It was business as usual for West branch last season, claiming another district title and a state semifinal appearance. The Bears will once again have the target on their backs with nine returning starters back from last year led by Brandon Young under center and the core of their running game also back. North Cedar (Stanwood) also had an exceptional season, losing only to the Bears in the regular season and then again in the playoffs. Jordan Hay is back at quarterback and Tanner Tenley is back to lead the defense. Pekin was young last year so look for improvement along with Alburnett.

Culjat is back under center to lead the Falcons once again. Logan-Magnolia seems to always find the next man in approach to work. The final playoff spots will be a battle, with no real standout but Griswold and Tri-Center (Neola) may have a slight edge with experience. Final weeks should be nail-bitters for many here.

Okoboji (Milford) dropped football and that will now benefit Spirit Lake where most of that talent will go to school. South Central Calhoun once again won the district title but lost in the state quarterfinals last season. The good news is that a ton of that talent is back and once again you can place the target square on their back. Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) is also returning a solid group of talent and will be a strong contender. OA/BC-IG returns a group of solid running backs and East Sac County would like to think they will improve on last season and battle for an upper division finish.

North Fayette (West Union) swept through a perfect regular season and it all ended in the 2A semifinals. Jake Greco returns to lead the strong running game. Beckman (Dyersville) will provide a huge challenge with most of their offensive unit led by Connor golden at quarterback. The rest of the district looks to improve to make it very competitive each Friday night. South Winneshiek looks to improve with an experienced group back along with Monticello and MMF, Mar-Mac (Monona).

Iowa City Regina was simply the best in Class 2A last season, winning the 2010 championship. The question is reloading or rebuilding this year? West Liberty has a good nucleus of returning experience and should be in the district battle. Camanche had a memorable season and would like to continue that success. The final playoffs spots look to be very much up in the air this season so look for newcomers to impact the district greatly.

Last season maybe the most balanced district from top to bottom where Sigourney/Keota won the title. Mediapolis may be to one with the most to look forward to this season with a strong group back led by quarterback Jesse Ertz. Mid-Prairie (Wellman) is another that should benefit with returning experience.

West Marshall won the district title last year with their high-powered offense led by Dalton Ferch and his nearly 1,600 yards. North Polk was the team that made a big impression at the end of the year with a 2A runner-up finish and with Noah Pickard back with his 1,600 yards, this district should be fun to watch especially when you bring up Roland-Story, St. Edmond, Collins-Maxwell-Baxter and Gilbert to the mix.

PCM-Monroe may be the best when it comes to the returning players with 13 starters back on both sides of the ball led by Hutch Burns in the backfield. You can usually look for good thing to happen at Pella Christian and Bondurant-Farrar but they both need to fill some big shoes on both sides of the ball.

Yes, I know how easy this is to predict but I guess until you beat them, you join them, as the saying goes. Harlan once again won the district title before losing in the 3A semifinals last season. Zach Osborn will be the key factor this season at quarterback but as they say, look for another reload in Cyclone country. The same familiar challenges look to come from Carroll, Lewis Central and Winterset who returns 1,100 yards rusher Brennan Kaldenberg.

Bishop Heelan claimed a district title and ran that to a runner-up finish in Class 3A last season. Back is Michael Malloy and his 1,600 yards on the ground and Paul Jacobson and his 2,300 yards in the air. The duo combined for 51 touchdowns. The question here is who will grab the final three playoff spots in the district. Look for BoydenHull/Rock Valley, LeMars and Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

Clear Lake won the district last season with a perfect regular season but failed to get past the second round of the playoffs. The Lions return Ozzie Adams under center with all-state experience. Webster City was young but at the same time very good last season with their runner-up district finish. Keagan Parks is again in the backfield with his 18 touchdowns and nearly 1,400 yards on the ground. Humboldt looks to get back into the playoff picture this season with a good nucleus of experience back.

Three teams posted 6-1 records last season and the same three: Decorah, West Delaware (Manchester) and Waverly-Shell Rock look to once again battle for the top but all three must look for a new set of leaders. Oelwein has a leader in Stephen Meyer under center with his nearly 1,900 yards in the air. With eleven returning starters. Maquoketa has made solid strides the past couple of seasons and behind Chase Coakley is a contender. Marion and Central Clinton (DeWitt) are usually right there and should be once again in the playoff picture. This is really a pretty solid top-to-bottom district.

It did not make any difference last year for Solon, who jumped from Class 2A to Class 3A on their way to winning their fourth straight title. JJ Hanus returns under center with his 2,300 yards of total offense and 20 touchdowns 16 through the air. A ton of talent graduated which makes this season a bit difficult to figure out. We know that Clear CreekAmana will throw the football with Dylan Villhauer who returns with his 3,200 yards in the air and 33 touchdowns. Others to watch are Williamsburg, Grinnell, and Benton (Van Horne).

Pella traveled far most weeks to claim the district title last year along the way to the 3A semifinals where they fell to state champion Solon. The word is reload for the Little Dutch to prevail this season. Oskaloosa returns 1,400 yard rusher Adam Rowley but the rest of this district will no doubt be determined on new faces stepping up and those back with some experience making improvements.

Conference Outlook
From top-to-bottom, this is a very competitive district last season and should be again this year. Four teams posted 5-2 record in districts last year. A-D-M (Adel) hopes to shore up the defense while riding out the arm of Gavin Glenn with his nearly 2,400 yards and 17 touchdowns last year. Carlisle has a few holes to fill but have experience at key positions beginning with Jeremy Flaws at quarterback. Those two look to be playoff bound while the remainder of the district will be a dogfight for the final two spots which look to include Dallas Center-Grimes, Knoxville, Newton, Norwalk and Perry.

Fort Dodge won the conference title but is was Ames that had the most success from the Iowa conference in the post season, reaching the quarterfinals where they lost to the eventual state champions, Dowling Catholic. Look for the Little Cyclones to use that momentum along with West Des Moines Valley who is always going to be the favorite in most years and look to be the team to beat this season.

Conference Outlook
Bettendorf had yet another solid football season with a semifinal round trip where they lost to 4A runner-up, Iowa City High. Blake Younkin is back with his 1,300-plus yards on the ground and 14 TDs on the offensive side of the ball where the defense is usually the staple in Bettendorf. North Scott also returns experience at key positions and will battle for the conference title. Davenport Central and Assumption should also be back in the upper division battle. In the end it will be the Bulldogs that will have the target once again on their back.

Iowa State Football Preview: The Quest for the Sixth Win

Several analysts have pegged him as a future NFL first round pick. The defense looks to be in pretty good shape with seven returning starters. Among those are standout linebackers A.J. Klein and Jake Knott. The duo combined for 242 tackles and seven interceptions. They will also have senior Leonard Johnson, regarded as Jake Knott, linebacker, Iowa one of the best State (Waukee) cover corners in the game. The schedule is challenging for the Cyclones and with few proven offensive options, it will be up to the likes of Klein, Knott and Johnson to have a standout defensive year and help Iowa State get back to a bowl game. While other schools may fight for a BCS bid or a chance at a national championship, if Iowa State can get to the coveted sixth win and earn a bowl bid, it will be a very successful year for Coach Rhoads. Theyll need all the help they can get from their defense. Coach: Paul Rhoads (12-13) Prediction: 5-7 (3-5)

other (both would go undefeated in the PFL), Drake opens the 2011 season with a schedule advantage. This year, Drakes toughest road battles will be Butler and San Diego State. But both programs seem to have taken a step back. There is a good chance Drake will enter the last two weeks of the season with an undefeated conference record. And then theyll have to face both Jacksonville and Dayton, at home this time. And on top of that, Jacksonville and Dayton do play each other this season. The Bulldogs might not need to beat both foes to claim the PFL Championship. But that will only be the scenario if the Bulldogs can take care of business first. They have several important players coming back that might help them achieve that. Most notably, the Bulldogs will have 10 of 11 of their starters on offense coming back. Including, senior quarterback Mike Piatkowski. Piatkowski, who is one of the best quarterbacks in the league, missed two games last season due to injury. Senior Drew Blackmon and junior Denzel Ray will return as the top threats at the wide receiver position. As well as, fifth-year senior running back Patrick Cashmore. Cashmore led the Bulldogs with 357 rushing yards. On defense, Drake returns seven starters. Senior linebacker Tyler Moorehead, a consensus pre-season All-PFL Performer, will anchor the linebacker unit after leading the team in tackles last season with 62. Fifth-year senior defensive back Michael Lahart and junior defensive back Mike Ratelle will also return, giving Drake an experienced secondary. The biggest concern will be rebuilding a defensive
line unit that lost three of its starters. Drake will sorely miss the reigning PFL Defensive Player of the Year Dain Taylor. Taylor had a monster year last season as a defensive end, recording 49.5 tackles, 13.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, an interception and a blocked kick. The Bulldogs will also have to replace Andrew Asbell and Josh Walkup along the defensive line. But there is optimism that experienced players such as senior David Witkiewicz and senior Anthony Michael Lahart, DB, Drake Gianaras can fit (Chariton) the bill. Drake is also coming off of a summer experience that saw the team travel to Africa to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and play a squad of Mexican CONADEIP All-Stars. Something the coaches believe has built a greater sense of team chemistry and unity. The Bulldogs are looking for their first PFL Championship since 2004 and with 17 returning starters and a favorable schedule, the idea does not seem farfetched. Coach: Chris Creighton (21-12) Prediction: 9-2 (7-1)

Upper Iowa University Preview: Young Peacocks Look to Breakout in Sheas Third Year
Eduardo Zamarripa Staff Writer
When Head Coach Tom Shea inherited the football program back in 2009, there was little to be excited about in Upper Iowa. The team was coming off a two-win season and was struggling to consistently compete. In his two-year tenure, Coach Shea has not been able to change the culture in Upper Iowa thus far, as he has won five games in his first two seasons. That is why Coach Shea might be entering the decisive third year for a coach. Will the Peacocks break out in 2011? Last season, the Peacocks finished with a 2-9 overall record and went 2-8 in conference play. The Peacocks struggled mightily on defense, allowing almost 40 points per game. Their road record is also a concern, since the Peacocks went 0-6 on the road last season. And this year might not be any better. The Peacocks lost several important players. They lost their two leading tacklers (Miller and Curran), their interceptions leader (Henry), as well as their two sack leaders (Spencer and Nix). The Peacocks will need to find new leaders in every defensive unit. Sophomore linebacker Tony Leggett recorded 58 tackles and an interception last year; they will need him to anchor the linebacking corps along with sophomore Calvin Darling. On the perimeter, it looks like the Peacocks will rely on sophomore defensive back DaeJohn Love. Freshman defensive back Jordan Andera showed promise last season as well. Like many positions in this squad, there are a lot of young guys that will really have to step up. This has to be one of the younger squads that the Peacocks have ever
fielded. On offense, the Peacocks lost leading rusher Sam Epsteen, but have junior running back Jordan Otdoerfer coming back. After a successful sophomore year, theyll need him to take that Kirby Hovden, QB, next step. The Upper Iowa (North Fayette) running game is vital to the Peacocks success. With Curran now graduated, it will be sophomore Kirby Hovden taking the reins at quarterback. Hovden showed a big arm last year, but he also struggled with his accuracy. Hovden will need to make strides quickly. Junior wide receiver Jessie Hubbard will be back. He was their best offensive weapon last season, having 597 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Theyll need a new number two receiver though, after losing Baldwin, Jackson, Williams and Schaeffer. Maybe sophomore Joe Alanis will have a breakout year, but the Peacocks
will most likely rely on their incoming freshmen to contribute at wide receiver. Across the board there are some important contributors returning for the Peacocks. But even then, the Peacocks were only 2-9, so its hard to predict how much that will affect the squad. The gaping holes at wide receiver and the absence of proven productive players on defense is a huge concern. The Peacocks have switched off between two and three wins each of the last four seasons. Coming off a 2-9 campaign and with a very inexperienced squad, its hard seeing the Peacocks doing any sort of leap in the standings. Coach: Tom Shea (5-17) Prediction: 2-9 (2-8)

The Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference kicks off its 2011 season with two nationally ranked teams as the front runners for the IIAC Championship. Defending champion Wartburg College opens the season ranked No. 8 in the country by Lindys magazine. Wartburg is coming off an undefeated season that saw them lose in the first round of the NCAA Division III Playoffs. The Knights will be led by sophomore running backs Reese Thompson and Brandon Sims. The duo was sensational last year and they will need a powerful running attack if the Knights want to repeat last seasons success. Wartburg lost several key members of their offensive line and linebacker units. If they cant find consistent replacements, that might make Coe College the immediate favorite. Coe starts the season off ranked in many preseason magazines. Lindys has the Kohawks starting at No. 23 in the country and have been picked by many as the team to beat in the IIAC. The Kohwaks finished 9-2 overall last year and went 7-1 in conference play. They have qualified for the playoffs in the last two seasons. Senior quarterback Daniel Boyd, an All-
Division III Pre-season All-American, will return for the Kohawks to lead their vaunted offense. As will, sophomore running back Brandon Leiran. The Kohawks return several key starters on defense. Among them, senior defensive line standout Tyler Hemry. Central College will try and join the discussion as an IIAC championship contender. They finished 8-2 overall last season and finished third in the conference. Coming into 2011, Lindys ranks Central No. 15 in its preseason poll. Central should not be overlooked, especially since senior quarterback Nate Snead and junior running back Ross Doehrmann will be leading the way on offense. Luther College, Loras College, Buena Vista University and Dubuque University make up the muddled middle.
Luthers success will depend on finding reliable replacements on their offensive and defensive line units. If they do, they might establish themselves as the fourth best squad in the conference. Buena Vista is also on the rise after returning most of their offensive weapons. The Beavers will also have a lot of experience across the board on defense. Simpson College and Cornell College will fight for last place in the conference. But Simpson looks closer to joining the middle-of-the-pack, while Cornell is coming off a win-less season. ISC Iowa Conference Prediction: 1. Wartburg 2. Coe 3. Central 4. Luther 5. Buena Vista 6. Loras 7. Dubuque 8. Simpson 9. Cornell
Wartburg College Preview: Can They Make Some Noise Outside of the IIAC?
Eduardo Zamarripa Staff Writer
Its no secret that Wartburg College is one of the elite programs in Division III football. The Knights have won the IIAC title two of the last three seasons and finished a perfect 10-0 last season to earn a number three seed in the 2010 NCAA Division III Playoffs. However, the Knights would eventually lose against sixth seeded Bethel University 28-20, crushing their dreams of making a postseason run. And while they have dominated the IIAC, the Knights have not been able to burst out into the national scene. After being ranked 15th in the national preseason poll this year, expectations are once again high in Wartburg. Perhaps no one will have more pressure than junior running back Reese Thompson. Thompson had a sensational sophomore year, rushing for 828 yards and 11 touchdowns. Look for him to have another stellar season. Junior running back Brandon Sims is another guy to watch for the Knights. He didnt have quite the campaign that Thompson did, but he still had 604 rushing yards and 198 receiving yards. He gives the Knights a dynamic 1-2 punch. Senior Dan Steifel will be back under center for the Knights. Another year of experience will help Steifel continue to improve his accuracy concerns. Steifel has been steady for the Knights; they dont need him to be spectacular with their effective running game. The Knights are going to need a new number two receiver after the departure of Jason Roskam. But they still have senior Levi Helbling, who was their best receiver last year, so dont expect a big drop-off in production out of the wide

who was the teams leading tackler and the anchor of the defense. They still have senior linebacker Ben Rector, but hes more of a threat on the outside. Theyll need someone to cover all those tackles that Suckow took care of. And of those guys will be standout senior defensive back Garrett McGrane. McGrane led the team in interceptions with six, but was also second with 81 tackles. Theyll need his help against the run. With McGrane and senior defensive back Josh VanDenHuhl back as well (he also had six interceptions), the Wartburg perimeter will be lights out. Senior Marcus Williams will continue the Ben Rector, LB (24), Wartburg (Carlisle) kicking duties and the return game should not miss a beat with VanDenHuhl returning kicks. receiver slot. the Kohawks would miss lineman Nate Clear, who led the team with 9 sacks last season, but with Hemry returning to the trenches, as well as senior Mike Mellas, this shouldnt be an area of concern for Coe. The rest of the defense incredibly experienced. The Kohawks leading tackler and linebacker, Ben Carr, returns for his senior year after making 83 stops last year. Connor Worthington, the teams second-leading tackler (82), also returns at linebacker. Worthington and Carr combined for three sacks. Other linebackers to watch will be juniors Phillip Hale, Zach West and sophomore Diego Rodriguez. In the defensive backfield, Coe returns two high-profile athletes in senior defensive back Jacob Breitbach and junior Bryce Sampson. Breitbach had 41 tackles last season to go along with two interceptions, 12 pass breakups and 14 passes defended. Sampson had 39 tackles, one pick, three passes broken up and four passes defended. Season prediction If anything, Coes experience means they are one to watch in the Iowa Conference. Though Wartburg is the consensus favorite, it would not be a surprise to see Coe or Central on top at the end of the year. Coes returning players may just be enough to give them a slight edge over Central and a good shot at Wartburg.
Is this the year the Central Dutch get past Iowa Conference rivals Coe and Wartburg? The offensive firepower that returns is certainly enough to give them a fighting chance. The story to watch in Pella will be who steps up on defense to fill some major gaps. The Dutch will have to replace several of their top performers last season, including defensive linemen Shane Wong and Austin Hill as well as linebacker Greg Best. Wong was undoubtedly the most prevalent force on Centrals defense last season. He recorded 49 total tackles, 17 of them for loss. He also had a team-high 11 sacks. Wong was selected as a third team D3football.com allAmerican last season. It will also be difficult to replace Best, who was the teams leading tackler with 65. Hill was another guy capable of disrupting offenses from the defensive line with hiss 40 tackles and 3.5 sacks. Defensive lineman Aaron Steenhoek, who had 7.5 sacks last season, will also be missed. Central is not without its potential candidates to fill in the shoes, though. Junior linebacker Ketih Rush returns after posting 44 tackles in his sophomore season and will be one to watch. Linebacker Seth Carson and defensive lineman Brady Hill, who both had 5.5 sacks last season, could also be called upon as the next men in line. Defensive end Holden Blythe will return for his senior year and could step up.

Things are a little more stable in the secondary, with Centrals top two defensive backs, Ryan Schmidt and Jake Petersen, returning. Schmidt had 54 tackles last season, one interception and a tremendous seven pass breakups. Petersen, on the other hand, tied for a team-high three interceptions with Adam Petz--who also returns-and had 43 tackles. The offense will be Centrals strength this season. Quarterback Nate Snead returns for his senior season after a season in which he passed for 1,510 yards, completed 96-of-179 passes and put up 12 touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 642 yards and 15 touchdowns. Sneads favorite target, his brother Jeremy Snead, also returns at wideout. Jeremy caught 38 passes last season for team highs of 597 yards and seven touchdowns. Receivers Brett Wilkin and Mike Furlong are also back and were popular targets for Nate Snead. Central loses tight end Jordan Leuschen, who was a big target for Nate Snead, Snead last year. QB, Central Running backs Ross Doehrmann and (Southeast Polk) Kyle Wood both return for the Dutch. Doerhmann rushed for 539 yards and two Central and Coe to fight for the second spot. touchdowns, while Wood had 404 yards on the However, dont count out the Dutch. They are very ground and three touchdowns, respectively. much in the hunt for the title. The biggest games to watch this season will be whenever those three Season prediction play each other. That will decide the conference Wartburg is most peoples favorite to championship and which other team might have a take the 2011 IIAC crown. It could be up to shot at a wildcard playoff berth.

Coming of a 3-7 season, the Beavers want to take the next step and have their first winning season since 2008. With some key players returning, that might not be so farfetched. Junior quarterback Bo Darrow will be the starter for the Beavers. Darrow threw 18 interceptions last year, but also showed mobility and playmaking ability. He will need to take better care of the football, but he should have a solid season. The wide receiver position will be exciting for the Beavers. They have their successful trio of wide receivers all coming back. Senior Larry
Marcel, junior Gunnar Wyatt and junior Logan Lehrkamp combined for more than 1,200 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Look for junior running back John Hill to have a bit of a breakout year. He only averaged 3.3 yards per carry last season, but he will get more touches and another year of experience will help out the Webster City native. On the defensive side of the ball, Buena Vista will miss defensive back standouts Danny Pattee and Dalton Keane. But senior Alan Bladt is one of the best in the conference at the free safety position and senior defensive back Tyler Kibbee should be reliable as well. Senior Travis Forkner will anchor the linebacker corps, as he was second on the team in total tackles last season. And on the defensive line, senior Scott Radke will be harassing quarterbacks all year out of the defensive end position. Radke recorded four and half sacks last year. With the defensive having a lot of important and experienced contributors back this year and the offense having kept most of their weapons, the Beavers should have a better year. It will be up to them to earn their first winning record since 2008.

In the last four seasons, the Norse have had quite the statistical oddity. Each and every season in the last four years has ended with Luther owning a 5-5 record. So while the Norse have not had a losing record since 2006, they havent exactly had a winning record either. Will this be the year Luther breaks the 5-5 pattern? If they do, it will be largely because of Senior quarterback Chris Reynolds. Reynolds led the team in rushing and passing yards, racking up over 2,500 yards and 20 total touchdowns. He has become one of the elite quarterbacks in the conference. Junior Steven Thompson and senior Dalen Dirth will both be back at the wide receiver position. They have become Reynolds favorite targets, as they both enjoyed productive seasons last year. There are also high expectations for sophomore running back Dan Ridenour. After having a 544-yard freshman season to go with a healthy 4.5 yards per carry, the Sheldon native should continue to thrive in the Norse offense.
And with the offensive line continuing to improve, look for the Norse offense to be even better this year. Senior linebacker Kyle McGivney is the heart and soul of the defense. He sets the tone and hell have another terrific year after recording 111 tackles season. Seniors Brian Darling and Donterrious Porter should give the Norse plenty of experience around the perimeter. One of the areas of concern will be generating more pressure on the quarterback, but junior linebacker Trent Kerrigan looks poised to fit that role. Kerrigan recorded three sacks last season. Luther will need contributions from their defensive and offensive lines. But if they can control the line of scrimmage, there is plenty of talent and experience across the board. Breaking that 5-5 spell is a huge possibility. Predicted record: 6-4 (5-3) Head Coach: Mike Durnin (15-15)

The Loras Duhawks come into 2011 with a few questions, mostly regarding who will fill in for key losses suffered due to graduation last season. Loras will have to start out by replacing a couple skill players on the offensive side. Wide receivers John Ingersoll and Walt Labuz were responsible for most of the receiving corps production, with Ingersoll gaining 447 yards and Labuz recording 433, respectively. Ingersoll recorded four touchdowns, while Labuz had three. Senior Gavin Kaiser, who had 219 yards and two touchdowns, may be the one who steps in. The question remains regarding who will fill in the other empty slot. Quarterback Vaughn Gesing does return for Loras, though, which will help make up for any question marks for the receivers. Gesing is back under center for his senior year. Last season, Gesing threw for 1,544 yards, 10 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Gesings experience may help new receivers find their comfort zone and contribute to the team. The Duhawks will be able to lean a bit on the running game this season, as both their top runners return in Matt Hillard and Ryan Baez. Hillard rushed for 554 yards and nine
touchdowns last season, while Baez had 532 yards and two touchdowns. With the experience at running back coming back for another year, the Duhawks may be able to make up for losing the big playmakers in the receiving corps. Defensively, there are a few more big holes to fill. Leading defensive backs Tommy Jahnke and Nick Lloyd (both had four interceptions) are gone, as is safety Kile Beaver, who was quite the ball hawk, recording 59 tackles, good for fourth on the team last season. Loras will also miss their leading tackler, defensive lineman Cody Snitker (77). Snitker had 10 tackles for loss on top of seven sacks last season. It is crucial that someone step up. Defensive end Aaron Strong and tackle Frank Pereiro may be able to step up in Snitkers absence. The linebackers have the most experience on the defensive unit. Junior Zach Myers, the teams second-leading tackler last season (65, including five sacks), returns and so do junior Brandon Ronan (54 tackles) and senior David Zoeckler (60 tackles). With so many question marks, the defense might be an issue to keep an eye on for Loras. This is a team with a lot of unknowns, but enough
things are known about the team to believe theyll compete fairly well in the IIAC. Season prediction Loras will battle with the middle teams in the Iowa Conference standings. Another .500 season seems likely, perhaps a win over or under.
Last season, the Dubuque Spartans were strongest through the air, averaging 232 yards per game. This year shouldnt be any different. In fact, a couple things point toward Dubuque fielding quite the prolific air attack. First, junior quarterback Wyatt Hanus is back for another year under center. In 2010, Hanus threw for 1,622 yards, eight touchdowns and had a 63.5 completion percentage. He was also able to protect the ball with some success, throwing only three interceptions. Hanus will once again have plenty of targets to choose from. The highlight of the group is D3football.com second team preseason All-American selection, Michael Zweifel, who was plagued for most of last year but was outstanding in 2009. Last season, he recorded 512 yards and grabbed two touchdowns in limited time but in 2009, Zweifel had 111 catches 1,522 yards and 15 touchdowns. His 152.2 yards per game, which was tops in the country in NCAA Division III. His 11.1 catches per game were second in the country. If he is healthy, the senior is probably the best receiver in the conference. Also returning for Hyatt to target is DeMarcus Fleming, who was the Spartans leading receiver last year with 860 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Tight end Miles Hookstead is back after recording 281 yards and four touchdowns last season. Sean Anderson will also represent a
Visit us on the web @ www.iowasportsconnection.com
familiar target for Hanus. The wide receiver averaged 10.3 yards per catch and had 196 receiving yards in 2010. Dubuques top two leading rushers from a year ago are back this year. Senior Justin Spaulding, who lead the team with 782 yards and seven rushing touchdowns, and junior Kyle Acker, who had 346 yards and 4.3 per carry, will anchor a solid ground game. Defensively, the Spartans are going to miss Toney Bailey III, who led the team in tackles (76) and tied for a team-high two interceptions. Dubuques second-leading tackler, Ryan Stodden, is also gone. The next in line to lead Dubuques defense appears to be junior linebacker Trevor Runkle, who was third on the team a year ago with 65 tackles. Junior defensive lineman Stephen Vassalotti is back after recording a team-high six sacks and tying for a team-high of nine tackles for loss. Those two alone wont be enough to make up for all the experience that has been lost on defense for the Spartans. Many newcomers will have to step up in big ways to help a defense that already gave up plenty of yards per game (329). Season prediction The Spartans are another team that will fight for a spot in the middle of the Iowa Conference. The passing attack will be exciting to watch with Hanus and Zweifel both healthy but the defense
is too much of a weakness to contend with the better teams in the league. The Spartans will contend with Luther for the Best of the Rest tag in the IIAC.

Simpson College fielded an inexperienced football team last season and it showed. Ending with a record of 2-8, with wins against Loras and Cornell, the Storm has much to improve upon in 2011. The good news is that as experience is gained, teams improve. Simpson will need to see improvement across the board if its to pick itself up and compete against the rest of the league. First, the Storm needs to find ways to produce on offense. The Storm averaged just over 100 yards per game on the ground and 163 yards through the air, while opponents averaged 165 yards rushing and nearly 200 passing. Luckily for Simpson, almost every top skill position player returns. At running back, sophomore Michael Chia and junior Austin Schmidt are back. Chia rushed for 430 yards and three touchdowns his sophomore year, while Schmidt had 194 yards, an average of four yards per carry and one score. Quarterback Taylor Nelson, who was also a freshman last season, has a year under his belt. Simpson needs him to find ways to produce more, as he had 1,301 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions last season. With the experience of last year, though, Nelson should be improved. He also ran for 201 yards and two touchdowns, so he does represent a bit of a threat on the ground.
Simpsons top three The offensive line, which gave up 40 tacklers, senior Braden Everding and juniors sacks last year, will Justin Perry and Mark need to protect Nelson a lot better for him to Cronin, all return at linebacker. Everding have a good amount of success calling the led the team with 82 tackles, while Perry had plays for Simpson. The 65 and Cronin had 61, whole group returns this year, however, so some respectively. On the defensive improvement in this line, J.J. Nair is back category should be seen. Nelsons top five with his team-high five sacks. Simpsons leading receiver from last season, Getting led the team with two interceptions last returns after posting 383 yards and four year. touchdowns on 36 catches. Junior receivers Taylor Rogers and Billy Weathers are back after Season prediction recording 273 and 234 yards, respectively. Also Simpson will most likely end up toward the returning are receiver Ben Coy and tight end Jake McCulley, who had three touchdowns last season bottom of the Iowa Conference again this season. The extra experience will help but it may and should be one to keep an eye on this year. take another year or two before the Storm are Things look the similar for the Storm on ready to challenge the stronger teams in the defense, with a lot of experience returning but conference. improvement needing to be seen all around for the team to win many games.
The 2010 season could not have been more frustrating for the Rams. With Head Coach Vince Brautigam at the helm, Cornell finished the year 0-10, going 0-8 in conference play in Brautigams debut season. The Rams were outscored 334-118 throughout the year, losing by an average of nearly 22 points per game. Youth and inexperience marked this squad, as they struggled in nearly every offensive and defensive category Junior Andrew Burdick looks to be the frontrunner to earn the starting quarterback nod for the 2011 campaign. However, dont be surprised to see sophomore Juan Flores tossed into the mix if things go south. Flores played in 9 games last year and was the teams leading rusher. Hes mobile and athletic and brings some excitement to the Rams offense. The running game will be a concern for the Rams. The only running back in their roster that has had any touches prior to this season is sophomore Hayden Howard, with six. Cornell will need to get some production out of their three freshmen running backs. Seniors Thomas Connor and Nathan Nichols

will anchor the Rams at the Wide Receiver position. Connor was one of the teams best offensive performers last season. On the defensive end, senior linebacker Tyler Bailey will look to have another monster year. A Pre-Season First Team AllAmerican, Bailey recorded 110 tackles last season. Theres good depth and experience on the defensive line and around the perimeter. Surely a year of experience will help this defense continue to improve. Considering Cornell has not won a game since November 2009, expectations may be low for the Rams. But maybe not having pressure is exactly what the Rams need to slowly climb back into relevancy. Dont expect a monster year, but you can surely pencil in a couple of wins for a more battletested Rams team that will do a better job of competing.
Tyler Bailey, LB, Cornell (West Branch) Prediction: 2-8 (1-7) Head Coach: Vince Brautigam (0-10)
The biggest story regarding the Grinnell Pioneers 2010 squad was head coach Jeff Pedersen (interim coach at the time). Pedersen led the team to a 6-4 record and a 5-4 Midwest Conference record. It was the Pioneers first winning season since 2004 and the team won as many games in 2010 as Grinnell had in the previous three years combined. Returning from last years squad are All- Ryan Creps LB, Grinnell (Grinnell) MWC first team selections senior Robert Seer and junior Logan Granera, who was also named to the second team for a separate position. He was joined on the second team by junior TJ Schaid. Seer and Granera return at receiver to provide returning quarterback Mike McCabe with experienced targets. Seer led the team in receptions (62) and touchdowns (14). Granera led the team in yards (897) and had seven touchdowns. McCabe got plenty of experience last season, splitting time with then-senior Mike Bogard and filling in during Bogards injury absence. McCabe threw for 1,382 yards, 14 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. McCabe will have to cut down on the mistakes this year if Grinnell is to have a repeat winning season. Junior running back TJ Schaid returns for Grinnells rushing attack. Last season, Schaid rushed for 384 yards and recorded one touchdown. The Pioneers will miss the playmaking abilities of linebacker Marquis Bradley and Marc Heronemus after both graduated. Stepping in to fill their shoes could be linebackers Ryan Creps (62 tackles, 10 for loss, three sacks and two interceptions last year) Jeremy Wiles (48 tackles) Colton Feller (41 tackles) defensive backs Seth Gustafson (45 tackles, one interception) and Andrew Clark (25 tackles, two interceptions). Season prediction There are holes to fill but coach Jeff Pedersen has what he needs to give Grinnell a second-straight winning season.

Tim Weideman Editor Northwestern College has a strong tradition of fielding an excellent football team, though that tradition may be sometimes overshadowed by rival Morningside. With a record of 8-2 in 2010, the Red Raiders pushed their streak of consecutive winning seasons to 20. Northwestern also finished the year ranked No. 15 in the NAIA, which marked the eighth-straight season Northwestern has finished ranked. This years team only returns 10 starters but that shouldnt discourage anyone from believing this team is a contender in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and maybe beyond. Northwestern is ranked No. 14 in the NAIA preseason poll, showing that the Red Raiders are expected to reload rather than need to rebuild. Aaron Jansen, LB, The Red Raiders return five starters on offense. Both Northwestern quarterbacks who saw time last season, junior Jayme Rozeboom (MOC-Floyd Valley) and sophomore Davis Bloemendaal, return this year. Rozeboom led the Raiders with 806 yards through the air and four touchdowns but also threw five picks. The offensive line is supposed to be strong once again, so neither quarterback need worry about that. Taylor Malm is gone at running back and that should make opponents happy. Malm was second on the team in rushing yards with 1,147. He also led the team with 31 receptions. However, Northwesterns leading rusher, Brandon Smith (1,166 yards), is back and ready to be featured. Tyler Walker leads the receiving corps. Hes back after posting 385 receiving yards and four touchdowns. On defense, Northwestern will try to maintain its reputation as a stifling run defense--they held opponents to 99 yards per game on the ground. Senior Paul Lundgren (31 tackles, six for loss) will anchor the line, along with ends Stanley Fleming III and Ethan Lensch. Two starters return at linebacker, with Ben Aguilera (leading tackler with 46.5 tackles, 4.5 for loss) and Aaron Jansen (44.5 tackles). The secondary is where Northwestern will have to put its focus on reloading. The Red Raiders lost seven players from the secondary last season. Chris Butler and Jerel Kyles have the most experience out of a young group. Season prediction Northwestern will fill its holes, reload and challenge Morningside for the GPAC title. They face Morningside at home Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Circle that game.
After going winless in the 2010 season, Dordt was picked to finish last in the GPAC Pre-Season Poll. Needless to say, expectations arent exactly high for the 2011 season. Under Head Coach John Heavner, Dordt went 0-10, all in conference play and has not had a winning season in its brief four year history. The Defenders have gone 2-30 in the last three years, with only one conference victory. The Defenders scored three touchdowns all year and were led offensively by quarterback Micah Twedell. Theyll need him to continue to make progress. Running back Josh VanKempen will also be back after recording 391 yards last season. As will wide receiver Sam DuMez, who led the WR corps in receptions and yards. Brice Kroeze, LB, Dordt Matt Postmus and Jordan Huisman will anchor (Unity Christian) the linebacker position. Both the offensive and the defensive line were a disaster for the Defenders, who will need to improve at the line of scrimmage if they want to have any chance of winning in 2011. Their first game of the season against Waldorf is the most winnable game in their schedule. Briar Cliff and Doane are two other weakest teams in the GPAC and they are both away games for the Defenders. So it doesnt look like a conference win is in store this season for Dordt. Its going to be a long season for the Defenders, but sometimes not having any pressure can turn out to be a blessing. The only way is up. Predicted Record: 1-10 (0-10) Head Coach: John Heavner (5-35)

The Iowa Wesleyan Tigers have not been relevant in the Mid-States Football Association for a while now. In the last six years, their largest win total has been three, once in 2008 and last year, after the Tigers finished 3-8 overall and 3-4 within their conference. But the Tigers have not been close to reaching the elite of their conference, nor have they fallen off to be considered the conferences worst. The Tigers have been steadily irrelevant. Not good enough to be considered average and not bad enough to be considered horrible. Eric Davis, OL, Wesleyan (West Marshall) Head Coach Kent Anderson enters his second season and after improving the Tigers win total his first year, nabbing one or two more wins this year is plausible. The progress that junior quarterback Kevin McConnell achieves is vital to the Tigers success. McConnell had 22 total touchdowns last season and led the team in passing and rushing. The Tigers did not have any sort of running game, so they are hoping their offensive line will substantially get better in that area and that junior Harrison Ballard can improve from his sophomore year. They lost wide receiver Lawrence Moore, but other than that, most of the offense is still in place. So an offensive squad that struggled at times will ultimately get better with another year working together. Same goes for the defense. They lost tackling leader Chris Owens, but returning are key contributors like senior linebacker Sailialii Tupai and sophomore defensive back Kerry Hartley. The defense struggled mightily, but one more year of experience will help them. Getting a running game going will help the Tigers rest their defense and control ball possession. With most key players back next season, the Tigers should get a little bit better. Predicted Record: 4-7 (3-4) Head Coach: Kent Anderson (3-8)

Graceland struggled to get much offense going last season, finishing the season 1-10 overall and 1-9 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference. This season, the Yellowjackets will have to find somebody to rely on for offensive production if the team wants to see the win total climb in the right direction. Last years starting quarterback, Brandon Charles, gone and so is his backup, Brandon Marquez. That means it could be either senior Rich Martinez or sophomore Taylor Saunders. The quarterback race is probably more open than that, but those two players would have Chad Belt, LB, the most experience on a team that sorely needs an Graceland (St. Albert) experienced signal caller. Dirinna Uwakwe returns as the most experienced running back. Last season, Uwakwe touched the ball 33 times for 144 yards (4.4 average) and had three touchdowns. A 4.4 average is nothing to mess with. If Uwakwe can keep that up even after he sees more touches, look out for him. Ricardo Johnson will be the most-experienced receiver this season. In his junior season, Johnson had 438 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Brandon Williams is another senior receiver to keep an eye on. On defense, Chad Belt returns as the teams leading tackler from last season (70). On top of that honor, Belt had 12 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Hell lead an experienced group of linebackers, which includes fellow seniors Tyler Hosfield (66 tackles, six for loss) and Jason Brown (55 tackles, 4.5 for loss). In the secondary, Dorian Smith, the teams second-leading tackler returns. Gracelands staff will look for sophomore Haley Lewis to keep making big plays. Lewis had two interceptions last season. Names to watch on the defensive line will be seniors William Fisher-Sims and Kori Clark. Season prediction Graceland is inexperienced in too many areas to be a threat this year in the HAAC. They should be better than last year, though its hard to put a win total on the team.
The Ellsworth Community College Panthers enter the 2011 season ranked No. 17 nationally in the NJCAA and has been predicted to finish second to Iowa Western Community College in the Midwest Football Conference West Division. The Panthers return the most NJCAA All-Americans of any other team ranked in the top 25. Leading for Ellsworth the way is first team wide receiver, Dexter Holmes. Last season, Holmes recorded 942 receiving yards, 12 touchdowns, 15.4 yards per catch and 94.2 yards per game. Honorable mention quarterback Willie Tindal is also back for the Panthers. Last season, Tindal rushed for 738 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with 2,773 passing yards and 23 touchdowns. Tindal only threw five interceptions all last year. Running back T.J. James (476 yards, three touchdowns) is expected to get a full workload this season as the leading returning rusher for Ellsworth. Nyran Ross may be another back to watch out for in 2011. Last year, Ross recorded 246 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. DeAndre Purty returns to lead the unit. The second-year linebacker is back after leading Ellsworth with 74 tackles, seven tackles for loss and one sack in 2010. Hell be joined by linebacker Travon Montgomery (60 tackles). Defensive back Chris Charles is back to give the secondary some experience. Charles had 66 tackles in 2010. The defensive line will be led by Ken Bishop. Bishop recorded 64 tackles, three of which were for loss and also had two sacks. The teams leader in sacks, defensive end Venson Marcellon (4.5), will also be a threat to opposing quarterbacks. Season Prediction Ellsworth Community College always fields an excellent team. Expect Ellsworth to make it a close fight to the finish with Iowa Western for the Midwest Football Conference West Division title. The Panthers could also go fairly deep into the postseason with the amount of experience they return.
Iowa Western Community College has only had a football program for two seasons. Well, in their second season of existence, the Reivers pulled off the conference championship. Expectations are high for a program that no one expected would rise so quickly to prominence. The Reivers finished the season with a 9-2 record, winning the conference title outright. However, they finished the season with two consecutive losses. Their first coming in the Midwest Football West Division Playoffs to Ellsworth and the second against Snow College in Zions Bank Top of the Mountain Bowl. But the pressure will now mount on the Reivers to see if they can do it again and to see if they can close out the season in better fashion. Sophomore running back Jalen Singleton will be back and hell continue to lead the Reiver rushing attack. Sophomore quarterback Zach Stoudt will also return and should have another great year after posting a 3-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season. The defense did not lose too many important contributors. Tackling leader Sam Maresh will be back. Predicted Record: 9-1 Head Coach: Scott Strohmeier

AIB head volleyball coach Jodi Butler has assembled a squad of 11 local and regional standouts to lead AIB into a new era. The Eagles will begin their first season of competition in fall 2011 as members of the Midwest Collegiate Conference (MCC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). A position-by-position breakdown of the 2011 AIB volleyball team includes: Setter Freshman Katlynn Gannon is the lone setter on the 2011 squad. Gannon was a four-year letter winner for the East Greene High School volleyball team. A first-team All-Rolling Hills Conference selection in her senior year, she led the team in assists (182), digs (362) and service aces (54) and was third on the team with 59 kills. She averaged a conferencebest 5.03 digs per game, which also ranked eighth in Class 1A and 28th among all volleyball programs in Iowa. A second-team all conference selection as a defensive specialist in her junior year, Gannon had a team-high 318 digs, averaging 5.4 per game. She again led the conference in digs per game and ranked fourth in Class 1A and 21st in Iowa. The Hawks recorded one of the best seasons in program history, finishing 14-7 overall and placing fourth in the conference. Gannon was also a key player her sophomore year, leading the team with 233 digs and receiving honorable mention allconference honors. Defensive Specialist Freshman Brittney Ray, a standout from the St. Louis area, will lead a talented group of defensive specialists. A second-team All-Suburban South selection, Ray played in all 71 games as a senior at Seckman High School. She led the Jaguars in digs (489) and digs per game (5.14) and finished the season ranked third in the conference in digs. In conference-only matches, she collected 167 digs, averaging 5.46 and ranking second in the league. A transfer from Hesston College, Allison Martin, will also key the Eagles at the defensive specialist position. Martin averaged 1.1 and 1.2 digs per game her sophomore and freshman year, respectively, at Hesston. In her senior year, she led the team with 51 service aces (0.6/game) and 451 digs (5.1/ game) and was fourth on the team with 108 kills,
averaging 1.2 per game. A second-team all-conference selection, Martin had 22 double-digit dig performances, including 10 consecutive. Adding depth to the position are juniors Rachel Church and Brittney Smith. Both spent last season with the AIB club volleyball team. Outside Hitter Three players will look to make an impact at the outside hitter position this year, led by junior Megan Calmer, who spent the past two seasons with the AIB club squad. A two-time honorable-mention all-conference selection at Panorama High School, Calmer was second on the team in kills (61), attack percentage (.394) and digs (53) and ranked third with 59 blocks her senior year. Adding depth to the outside hitter position will be freshman Alyssa Drey and junior Shelby Wood. Drey was a three-time all-conference selection at St. Marys Storm Lake High School. A four-year letter winner, she led the Panthers with 179 digs, averaging 2.7 per game her senior year. She was third on the team in kills (38) and service aces (25). She led the team in digs 14 times, including seven double-digit efforts. Wood has played the last two seasons with the AIB womens basketball team. A tournament at Clarke University that includes matches against Robert Morris, Calumet and Clarke follows Sept. 9. Robert Morris, out of the Chicagoland Conference, won 26 matches last season while MCC opponent Clarke finished the 2010 campaign 23-15 overall. Grand View welcomes AIB Sept. 13 for a conference match. The Vikings placed second in the MCC regular-season, finishing 33-9. Next up is a two-game home stand with a Sept. 15 date against 20-match winner Grace University and a Sept. 17 date against upstart Wentworth Military Academy. The Eagles return the trip, traveling to Grace University for a tournament, Sept. 23-24, where they will face host Grace as well as Lincoln Christian College, both out of the National Christian Collegiate Athletic Association (NCCAA). Two conference matches against William Penn (Sept. 27) and at regular-season champion Viterbo College (Oct. 5) are followed by a trip to Omaha to face non-conference opponent College of Saint Mary. The Eagles are back in the AIB Activities Center, hosting Iowa Wesleyan (Oct. 11) before traveling to Ashford for an Oct. 19 match-up with the Saints. Grand View hosts AIB in a tournament Oct. 21-22 where the Eagles will face Peru State, Illinois Tech, Graceland and the University of Sioux Falls. The next three matches of the season are a conference date at Mount Mercy (Oct. 25) and non-conference matches at Avila (Oct. 28) and Wentworth (Oct. 29). I chose UIU for the academic opportunity in the Art/Graphic design program which has been a great experience for me. I also love the scheduling of classes and how it provides student athletes a way to balance work on and off the course.
