Statement of Purpose : A combined visual and thematic exploration of Western art.


The form and content of painting, sculpture, architecture and graphics will be studied through a series of themes and purposes, suspending the usual historical and chronological framework of the survey. Themes that may be covered include death and macabre; recreation and entertainment, power and politics; religious beliefs and the environment/nature. Slide lectures, online PowerPoint presentations, online assignments, demonstrations, and video supplement the course.

Course Objective : Students will develop a general understanding and appreciation


for the visual arts through the study of its various forms, styles, functions, and techniques. Students will learn to approach art objects in a manner that will foster new insights and cross-cultural comparisons. Students will develop the verbal and written skills that will enable them to successfully discuss and analyze works of art.

Instructional Approach:
This is a hybrid online class with ten mandatory face to face meetings. Assignments for ART 150 will be submitted online using ANGEL. Face to Face Meeting Dates : 6:00pm-7:15pm Monday August 29, September 12, 19, October 3, 17, 31, November 14, 28, December 5, 12 This is an online class that requires some level of computer proficiency. Students should be familiar with ANGEL, discussion boards, live chats, downloading, uploading, PowerPoint presentations, editing and saving WORD documents. You will need access to DVD rentals for several films in the course. I recommend Netflix. Gallery/ Museum Visit Assignment: You will be required for one of the Art 150 Assignments to visit an instructor approved gallery or museum depending on your geographical location. We discuss this further at our first face to face meeting. Worth 60 points.

Attendance :
Since this is an hybrid course you are responsible for keeping up with the readings and assignments. It is important that you check ANGEL for course updates a minimum of one time per day or you may miss out on important class information. Late online assignments will be penalized 5 points for each day late.

All students are expected to attend every face to face meeting for the scheduled time; failure to attend these classes punctually and faithfully will have an adverse effect on your grade. Any unexcused absences will result in the automatic lowering of your final grade ( letter grade for each day missed ) *** MAKEUP TESTS AND QUIZZES WILL ONLY be given in the case of serious personal emergencies***

Course schedule: Reading : Note Periodically, I will also assign supplementary readings for the
class discussions. The information regarding these readings will be provided in class and online. Students are responsible for all material covered in lectures, online PowerPoint presentations, readings from text, supplementary readings, videos, art activities, art openings, art websites and visiting artist lectures. All assigned readings should be completed prior to each class meeting or scheduled online discussion.

Exams :
There will be two exams for the fall semester. The exam will be primarily made up of visual identification, multiple choice, fill in the blank, true false, short answer and essay questions. Students are responsible for identifying any artwork discussed in class or online that is included on the study guide sheets posted on ANGEL. Moreover, students are responsible for the ideas and principles discussed in regard to additional works shown in class or online, even though they do not appear in the text.

Art 150 Final : There will be one art project for the fall semester which will serve as the final exam for this course. The final project will include a written component. Although the final is project based, as far as with the previous exam, it is expected that the student will gather and retain concepts and terms throughout the course. Material from earlier units will provide a foundation for later ones. Quizzes :
There will be two quizzes for the fall semester. Each quiz will be based on information from class lectures, online assignments and discussions, textbook readings. Each quiz is worth 50 points. ANGEL Learning ASSIGNMENTS: Weekly assignments will be posted on ANGEL Learning every Tuesday throughout the course schedule. The assignments will be accompanied by a POWERPOINT presentation as well as links to materials to supplement the coursework. The assignments will cover the artists and their artwork(s) taken from our themes for the course: death and the environment/nature. Due dates on weekly ANGEL assignments will vary- see the ANGEL calendar. All ANGEL assignments must be completed by the due date and uploaded to ANGEL Learning. Detailed instructions for each assignment can be viewed using ANGEL once the assignment becomes available. Late assignments will be penalized 5 points for each day late. At the instructors discretion, additional assignments may be added or changed during the fall semester. Do not email assignments to the instructors Ashland email address. They must be uploaded to ANGEL. Only assignments uploaded to ANGEL will be accepted.

It is important that you check ANGEL for course updates a minimum of one time per day or you may miss out on important class information Study Guides for the two quizzes and the exam will be posted on ANGEL as well an image database of all of the artworks covered in the course. We will be communicating via ANGEL utilizing email, live chats and discussion boards. Attendance at the live chats and participation in the discussion boards are mandatory. Dates and times for the live chats and discussion board participation will be announced as they are available.

Participation : even though this is a hybrid online course, participation in the course
activities will count 20% of your final grade including participation at our face-to-face meetings. Applying the information we discuss is important for your understanding of the material. Activities could include but are not limited to the following: art gallery openings, art activities , visiting artist lectures, gallery & museum fieldtrips.

Evaluative Criteria Grading :
Final Grades will be determined by averaging the results of the weekly ANGEL assignments, one exam, two quizzes and the final project. This will count as 80% of your grade.
