INTEGRATED MATH 3: GEOMETRY PORTFOLIO

This Portfolio Project will center around our units on Geometry. Why do we study geometry? Looking at geometry philosophically, learning how to construct proofs will teach you how to think logically, and not make poor decisions based on ignorance and faulty assumptions. Geometry has been called the surest, clearest way of thinking available to us. Looking at geometry historically, we find that over most of the last two and a half thousand years, geometry has been studied because it has been held to be the most exquisite, perfect paradigmatic truth available to us. Cultures with the smartest people, the best engineers, and superior technology, generally prevail over those without these assets. Geometry is the part of mathematics which underpins science and engineering. If you prefer viewing human masterpieces, artists and architects have made creative use of geometry throughout the centuries. Enjoy the geometry used in many man-made Wonders of the World: the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat, the Forbidden City, Bagan Temples & Pagodas, the Karnak Temple, Teotihuacan, as well as many modern pieces of art. If you are just a plain student, who could care less about geometry or any other serious undertaking other than playing video games or texting, learning all that you can, while you can, may help you to prepare for a higher-income, more satisfying job which will make you a more attractive partner for those you would want to date or marry. Should none of these reasons satisfy you, then you need to study geometry because that is what you are required to do in order to pass this class. In this portfolio project, you will be required to submit the following (in a binder/folder): 1. A biography of a mathematician who contributed to the field of geometry. This should be at least 2 pages (double-spaced, 12-point font). It should include who they were, what they did for geometry, when and where they lived, how they have helped our understanding of geometry, and give an example of something they proved. 2. Research into a career involving the use of geometry. This will need to be no longer than one or two paragraphs that include what the career is and how it requires a firm understanding of geometry. 3. Quizzes/Tests a minimum of three (3) quizzes or tests showing your proficiency in our units. 4. Activities/Projects this may include your Ad Project. 5. Reflection Essay why did you choose to include each artifact? What do you feel you have learned in this geometry unit? How do you feel you have grown as a math student by learning the basics of geometry? (at least one page)
