Photoshop CS2 – Selected Tools

Marquee – Rectangle/Oval – a simple tool for selecting a rectangular or oval/circular
area of your image.
Move – Used to move things around
Lasso – Magnetic/Normal – a tool for drawing a freehand selection of a part of your
image, the Magnetic variant “sticks” to edges in your image.
Magic Wand – Used to select an area of the same colour to the point at which you
click.
Crop – allows you to trim down an image
Healing Brush – used to retouch photos, remove blemishes etc
Brush - a paintbrush, you can select different types of brush from the drop down list.
Clone stamp/Pattern stamp – allows you to paint with a previously selected portion
of the image. Pattern stamp, lets you paint with a selected pattern.
History brush – similar to the clone stamp but copies from a previous state selected
in the images History. The Art History brush paints with a pseudo-artistic paint style.
Eraser – erases the image using the background colour.
Paint bucket/Gradient fill – fills an area with the foreground colour/ creates a
gradient from Foreground to Background colour or vise versa.
Blur/Sharpen/Smudge – Blurs, sharpens or smudges….
Dodge/Burn – lightens or darkens the image.
Type – allows to enter text onto an image.
Eyedropper – lets you pick up colour from the selected part of the image (to use as
your foreground colour, for painting etc)
Hand – this tool lets you move around your image when you are zoomed in, you can
do the same thing by holding down space.
Zoom – zooms in and out of the image (hold down Alt to zoom out), you can also use
the Navigator palette.

Task 1 – Image Adjustments

1. Open a photograph (File -> Open)

2. Click Image -> Adjustments
3. Choose an adjustment and experiment with what it does to your photograph.
4. Save the result with a different name (File -> Save As)
5. Use the History Palette to undo your changes and try a different Adjustment.

Task 2 – Selections and Adjustments

1. Using the selection methods demonstrated select parts of an image and try
applying the adjustments you used in Task 1.
If you have people in your photograph, try selecting them, if there is sky visible try
selecting that.
Avoid objects with very complex shapes or edges to begin with, as these will be a lot
harder to select.
2. Check you have tried all the following selection methods
Marquee – Rectangular and Oval
Lasso – Normal, Polygonal and Magnetic
Magic Wand
Quick Mask – try different brushes
3. Check you tried the following techniques
Adding and subtracting to a selection
Saving a selection
Feathering a selection
Inverting a selection
Hiding a selection

Useful Keyboard Shortcuts

V - selects the move tool
B - selects the brush tool
E - selects the eraser tool
L - selects the lasso tool
G - selects the paint bucket tool
Z - selects the zoom tool
X - switches between background and foreground colours
Q – enters Quick mask mode, press it again to exit

F - cycles through different display modes (full screen etc)

Space - holding down the space key lets you move around the image
Tab - turns palettes on and off (good for when you want to see your image with no
distractions)
Ctrl and 0 (zero) - enlarges your image’s window to fill the screen

Ctrl and S - Save

Ctrl and Shift and S - Save As
Ctrl and O - opens an existing file
Ctrl and N - opens a new file

Ctrl and C - copy

Ctrl and X - cut
Ctrl and V - paste

Ctrl and D – removes a selection

Ctrl and H – hides a selection
Ctrl and Shift and I - Inverts the current selection (so the opposite is selected)

Ctrl and T - Free Transform (hold down Shift to maintain proportions)

Ctrl and clicking a layer - creates a selection the same shape as the layer
Ctrl and Y - switches to CMYK Preview mode
Ctrl and J - duplicates the selected layer (or group)
