Short Synopsis On a sun-dappled summer day a science expedition propels two children toward an enigmatic encounter at the edge of their known world. Long Synopsis The Anachronism is a short narrative science fiction film set in the late nineteenth century. On a sun-dappled summer day Katie and Sebastian (Katarina Watt, Ryan Grantham) set out into the woods on a mock-science expedition, cataloguing the names of plants and insects. Their journey takes them to an isolated headland by the ocean, where they discover a creature that defies their science textbooks; a shipwrecked submarine shaped like a Giant Squid. Fast Facts

The word anachronism describes someone or something that is not in its correct historical or
chronological time.

Funding for The Anachronism was provided by the Canada Council for the Arts, the British The budget for the film was $50,000.00 CDN. Principal Photography lasted for 10 days, quite a long shoot for a short film.

Columbia Arts Council, the National Film Board of Canada and the Kickstart 2008 Award (an initiative of BC Film and the Directors Guild of Canada BC District).

Locations used for the film included Whytecliffe Park in Horseshoe Bay, Stanley Park, Rowlatt
Farmstead in Langleys Campbell Valley Park, and the Roedde House Museum in the West End of Vancouver.

One hundred and sixteen crew members and collaborators contributed to the film. Katarina Watt (Katie) and Ryan Grantham (Sebastian) both celebrated their 10th birthday on
the set of the film. Ryan is one of Vancouvers busiest young performers, appearing in Jumper and the Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, while The Anachronism was Katarinas first acting role. Despite the difference in experience, both were nominated for Leo awards for their performances in the film.

Construction of the Squid set piece began in March, 2008 and was not completed until moments
before the first shot it appeared in on July 8th 2008.

The Squid stands fourteen feet tall.

It is made from fibreglass, wood and closed-cell foam.

The Original Score for the film, composed and conducted by Matthew Rogers, was performed
by a string quartet and a prepared piano. String, paper and rubberbands were tied around the hammers and cables of the piano to create eerie reverberations when played.

The character of the Pilot was renamed Miyuki in honour of Miyuki Mori, the head sculptor
and mould maker in the production workshop. Miyuki also translated and voiced the Pilots radio distress call that appears in the story.

Directors Notes At the outset of their expedition, Katie and Sebastian carry themselves with the supreme confidence of Victorian-age scientists. Everything they need to know can be found in their trusty text book. Every creature and phenomena in nature has its proper place on their list. The children are quite sure that they know everything. By nightfall, they return home transformed. They are stunned by a fragmented revelation that points towards places and experiences beyond their comprehension. This glimpse of the unknown challenges their assumptions about everything, including the certainty of maternal shelter and the comfort of the family nest. The Anachronism, then, is about moments of discovery that have no reference points and about confrontations for which there are no preparations. Book learning and parental guidance can only take us so far. Beyond them lie the real questions that shape our journeys. How do we respond to the unknown and the seemingly impossible? With fear and denial, or with childlike curiosity? My aim was to capture a childs incomplete picture of the world, with all the sublime potential and scarring confusion that can come with it. I wanted to create a film that achieved the crystalline simplicity of a childs storybook while carrying complex, genuine mysteries at its heart. Matthew Gordon Long April 2010
