Refer to the catalogue This course provides an introduction to accounting techniques used by managers when they are faced with planning, directing, controlling and decision-making activities in their organizations. Accounting information can be used to identify and analyze alternatives and to guide the manager to a course of action that will yield the greatest benefit to the firm. While the major emphasis in financial accounting is on the accumulation and presentation of accounting data to external decision-makers, the emphasis in managerial accounting is on the presentation and analysis of accounting data by internal decision-makers.

One of the main objectives of this course is to familiarize you with the requisite technical skills for problem solving; for example, determining Course Description unit product costs, measuring production process costs, budgeting, performance reporting, allocating resources efficiently within the firm, and maximizing profits while maintaining the ability to meet long-term goals. Homework assignments (which need not be submitted) will help you to develop these skills. We meet twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I will devote roughly equal amounts of time for highlighting the concepts and for solving applied problems. In addition to understanding what is discussed in the class, you also need to read the textbook to reinforce the concepts discussed in the class. This can be done effectively, only if you read the textbook on an ongoing basis without waiting for an exam.

2) Become proficient in using managerial accounting planning tools such as CVP analysis 3) Be able to formulate budgets, apply cost benefit and variance analysis to help evaluate the performance. 4) Learn the basic principles of activity based costing and activity based management. 5) Be able to distinguish between long-term and short-term managerial decisions and be able to frame the decisions appropriately.
Method of assessment of learning outcomes

The learning objectives will be assessed through a series of quizzes, exams and assignments.

The required textbook for the course is Cornerstones of Managerial Accounting by Mowen, Hansen and Heitger (published by Cengage Learning). We will use the custom edition for UTD (4th edition). The 13 Required Texts & digit ISBN number is 978-1-133-04686-8 and the 10 digit ISBN number Materials is 1-133-04686-X. Alternatively, if you choose, you may buy the regular 4th edition by the same authors (Published by Cengage Learning) which will have a few more chapters than what we cover in the course. But do not buy any other edition. I will make my lecture notes and other handouts available to you through the E-learning course home page To access the course materials visit Lecture notes http://elearning.utdallas.edu/ Please print out a copy of lecture notes (or bring a soft copy) and any other relevant materials (if assigned) and bring them to class. Self administered quizzes: I will make a quiz available in eLearning for every chapter. The quiz will have true or false and/or multiple choice questions. You can take the quiz online at a time that is convenient to you. You are required to complete the quiz by the due date indicated in the syllabus to get full credit. You are allowed to refer to the book or notes. However, you cant consult anyone. You will get a grade instantly after you submit the quiz. Your score in each self-quiz will be converted into points based on the following scheme: Your score in the self quiz 80% - 100% 70% - 79% 60% - 69% 50 59% Below 50% Points for the final course grade 5 4 3 2 1

I will drop the 3 lowest scores and consider the scores in the rest of the self administered quizzes for the final grade.

Quizzes in class: There are four in class quizzes. At least 25% of the questions will be similar to the questions in self-administered quizzes. These quizzes are closed book and closed notes. You dont need Scranton. You should bring a calculator. The lowest scoring quiz will be given half the normal weight when I calculate the final course grade. Exams: There are two exams. The exams will have a multiple choice section and a section with problem solving questions. At least 25% of the exam questions will be similar to the questions in the self administered quizzes and the assigned problems. The exam in which you score better will get a higher weight (60% of the points assigned to exams) in the final course grade. Group exercises: From time to time, I will assign some work that should be completed (in group setting) in class. This may involve analysis of cases. Midterm grade: You will get a midterm grade that reflects your performance during the first six to seven weeks of the course. Calculation of final grade: For calculating the final grade, I will add up the points from all the assessment components. * The three quizzes with the best scores will be given 30 points each and the quiz with the worst score will be given 10 points. ** The exam with a better score will be given a weight of 125 points and the other exam will be given a weight of 75 points. *** If you are not present in class when a group exercise is completed, you will get a grade of zero. I will give higher weight (60%) to group exercise grades that exceed your median grade in the group exercises. One group exercise with the lowest grade will be dropped. Grading Scale The following scale reflects, on the average, how points were translated into letter grades, in the past. However, please keep in mind that the cutoff for letter grades do change from year to year and the following scale should be considered as the expected scale and not to be treated as

Grading Policy Translation of the total point score into a letter grade will be based on the judgment of the instructor. This translation process will be based on many factors including the students relative performance (with respect to the rest of the students in the class), the consistency of performance across all the components of assessment (such as quizzes, exams and assignments), and the standards that are expected in a rigorous undergraduate program.

Each of you should form a group of no more than five students. From time to time, I will assign mini cases that would be solved in class by the groups. There will be no makeup exams. If you know that you are going to be missing an exam, you should inform me ahead of time. Provided you have a valid reason, at my discretion, alternate arrangements may be made. Please do not plan for opportunities that will let you get extra credit to makeup any shortfall in assignment or exam I will not, ordinarily, accept late assignments. It is highly recommended that you are regular to class meetings. If you are not present in class when we have group discussions, then you will not get any credit for that. Active participation in class room is strongly encouraged.
The University of Texas System and The University of Texas at Dallas have rules and regulations for the orderly and efficient conduct of their business. It is the responsibility of each student and each student organization to be knowledgeable about the rules and regulations which govern student conduct and activities. General information on student conduct and discipline is contained in the UTD publication, A to Z Guide, which is provided to all registered students each academic year. The University of Texas at Dallas administers student discipline within the procedures of recognized and established due process. Procedures are defined and described in the Rules and Regulations, Board of Regents, The University of Texas System, Part 1, Chapter VI, Section 3, and in Title V, Rules on Student Services and Activities of the universitys Handbook of Operating Procedures. Copies of these rules and regulations are available to students in the Office of the Dean of Students, where staff members are available to assist students in interpreting the rules and regulations (SU 1.602, 972/883-6391). A student at the university neither loses the rights nor escapes the responsibilities of citizenship. He or she is expected to obey federal, state, and local laws as well as the Regents Rules, university regulations, and administrative rules. Students are subject to discipline for violating the standards of conduct whether such conduct takes place on or off campus, or whether civil or criminal penalties are also imposed for such conduct. The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. Because the value of an academic degree depends upon the absolute integrity of the work done by the student for that degree, it is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work.

Academic Integrity

Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related to applications for enrollment or the award of a degree, and/or the submission as ones own work or material that is not ones own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty involves one of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion and/or falsifying academic records. Students suspected of academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary proceedings. Plagiarism, especially from the web, from portions of papers for other classes, and from any other source is unacceptable and will be dealt with under the universitys

policy on plagiarism (see general catalog for details). This course will use the resources of turnitin.com, which searches the web for possible plagiarism and is over 90% effective. The University of Texas at Dallas recognizes the value and efficiency of communication between faculty/staff and students through electronic mail. At the same time, email raises some issues concerning security and the identity of each individual in an email exchange. The university encourages all official student email correspondence be sent only to a students U.T. Dallas email address and that faculty and staff consider email from students official only if it originates from a UTD student account. This allows the university to maintain a high degree of confidence in the identity of all individual corresponding and the security of the transmitted information. UTD furnishes each student with a free email account that is to be used in all communication with university personnel. The Department of Information Resources at U.T. Dallas provides a method for students to have their U.T. Dallas mail forwarded to other accounts. The administration of this institution has set deadlines for withdrawal of any collegelevel courses. These dates and times are published in that semester's course catalog. Administration procedures must be followed. It is the student's responsibility to handle withdrawal requirements from any class. In other words, I cannot drop or withdraw any student. You must do the proper paperwork to ensure that you will not receive a final grade of "F" in a course if you choose not to attend the class once you are enrolled. Procedures for student grievances are found in Title V, Rules on Student Services and Activities, of the universitys Handbook of Operating Procedures. In attempting to resolve any student grievance regarding grades, evaluations, or other fulfillments of academic responsibility, it is the obligation of the student first to make a serious effort to resolve the matter with the instructor, supervisor, administrator, or committee with whom the grievance originates (hereafter called the respondent). Individual faculty members retain primary responsibility for assigning grades and evaluations. If the matter cannot be resolved at that level, the grievance must be submitted in writing to the respondent with a copy of the respondents School Dean. If the matter is not resolved by the written response provided by the respondent, the student may submit a written appeal to the School Dean. If the grievance is not resolved by the School Deans decision, the student may make a written appeal to the Dean of Graduate or Undergraduate Education, and the deal will appoint and convene an Academic Appeals Panel. The decision of the Academic Appeals Panel is final. The results of the academic appeals process will be distributed to all involved parties. Copies of these rules and regulations are available to students in the Office of the Dean of Students, where staff members are available to assist students in interpreting the rules and regulations. As per university policy, incomplete grades will be granted only for work unavoidably missed at the semesters end and only if 70% of the course work has been completed. An incomplete grade must be resolved within eight (8) weeks from the first day of the subsequent long semester. If the required work to complete the course and to remove the incomplete grade is not submitted by the specified deadline, the incomplete grade is changed automatically to a grade of F. The goal of Disability Services is to provide students with disabilities educational opportunities equal to those of their non-disabled peers. For example, it may be necessary to remove classroom prohibitions against tape recorders or animals (in the case of dog guides) for students who are blind. Occasionally an assignment requirement may be substituted (for example, a research paper versus an oral presentation for a student who is hearing impaired). Classes enrolled students with mobility impairments may have to be rescheduled in accessible facilities. The college or university may need to provide special services such as registration, notetaking, or mobility assistance. It is the students responsibility to notify his or her professors of the need for such an accommodation. Disability Services provides students with letters to present to faculty members to verify that the student has a disability and needs accommodations. Individuals requiring special accommodation should contact the professor after class or during office hours.

The University of Texas at Dallas will excuse a student from class or other required activities for the travel to and observance of a religious holy day for a religion whose places of worship are exempt from property tax under Section 11.20, Tax Code, Texas Code Annotated. The student is encouraged to notify the instructor or activity sponsor as soon as possible regarding the absence, preferably in advance of the assignment. The student, so excused, will be allowed to take the exam or complete the assignment within a reasonable time after the absence: a period equal to the length of the absence, up to a maximum of one week. A student who notifies the instructor and completes any missed exam or assignment may not be penalized for the absence. A student who fails to complete the exam or assignment within the prescribed period may receive a failing grade for that exam or assignment. If a student or an instructor disagrees about the nature of the absence [i.e., for the purpose of observing a religious holy day] or if there is similar disagreement about whether the student has been given a reasonable time to complete any missed assignments or examinations, either the student or the instructor may request a ruling from the chief executive officer of the institution, or his or her designee. The chief executive officer or designee must take into account the legislative intent of TEC 51.911(b), and the student and instructor will abide by the decision of the chief executive officer or designee. Off-campus, out-of-state, and foreign instruction and activities are subject to state law and University policies and procedures regarding travel and risk-related activities.
