What is the true meaning of the term perpetual motion ? If you look it up, you d find it means, without beginning or end. In this light, I acknowledge that it will always be impossible to build a perpetual motion machine, since any such machine must have a beginning, disqualifying itself from being true perpetual motion. Yet, the promise of fusion means building a sun small and secure enough for our use, and we pursue it religiously. Yes, I am aware of the laws of conservation of energy, etc., etc., that say it is impossible to make a free energy device. I am also aware of the fact that, according to science, a bumblebee can t fly. I have a copy of a page from an 1898 Encyclopedia Britannica (courtesy of Aurora, Illinois attorney Gary Shilts) that has an excerpt on aeronautics, complete with valid mathematical equations, that prove heavier-than-air flight is impossible. I don t know if the Wright brothers knew this, but like the bumblebee, they went ahead and did it anyway. The only thing more common than people who keep trying to build such a device, are the everpresent naysayers who will always be there to say, it can t be done. Nobody ever really believed in an energy shortage anyway. The difficult we do right away, the impossible takes a little longer.

First Attempts

Note how the arms on my first attempts resemble the arms of the current version. It was several years before I learned that replacing the outer ring of magnets with a coil of wire would make it a working motor or generator. Spin the center and elecricity would be generated in the coil of wire. Or, send electricity into the coil of wire and the center will spin like a motor. As you will see, I later added a second arm to get more power and balance.

I had to include a picture of Hero s Engine to show the similarity of design and function. Although this never influenced my work, it is notable how the repelling effects of escaping steam mimics the repelling effects of like magnetic poles. As you will see later, the electromagnetic field in the finished product is different than what was done in the First Attempts model.

Current Magnetic Field Theory

If you type magnetic field, schematic into your web browser you will see an image similar to the one below that shows the lines of force travelling in one end and out the other, almost like the intake and exhaust of a jet engine.

What s wrong with this picture?

The problem with the picture above is that if you put a piece of steel on each end of the magnet, one of them must fall off. That doesn t happen, however, both pieces of steel stick to each end. If you don t believe me, please try it yourself. Some 30-odd years ago, I pointed this out to an electronics professor and he replied, no, because if that were true than perpetual motion would be possible. Since I already had prototypes, I said it was possible. He responded with, No, you can t get something for nothing. I guess that means that what I see with my own two eyes is not really happening. There must be a logical explanation why one of them does not fall off. I am not interested in having someone try to explain it, since the steel will still stick to both ends regardless of any explanation you offer.

A Tale of Two Doggies

Many moons ago, my father brought a gift home for one of my sisters who had stayed home sick from school. The package contained two plastic Scottie dogs (still available from Johnson Smith Co. 1-800-826-8125) with a magnet in the base of each one. While playing with them at the table, my mom was thrilled. She said, Magnetism is the key to everything, David, that s what you should do, figure out magnetism. I don t know exactly when that was, but in 5th grade (1963-64) I had made my First Attempts model at the beginning of this paper. I did not work on it nonstop over the years, but other events happened that influenced my interest in magnetism. In high school we had a biology teacher answer questions about why perpetual motion wouldn t work. Gravity would cause drag, bearings are subject to friction and other reasons. He did say it should be possible in outer space where there was no gravity, but offered no ideas on how to do it. During the Arab oil embargo of 1973 I was returning from a trip to Spencer, Michigan and wound up getting back to Aurora Illinois on fumes. I decided then and there that no one would ever do this to the United States again and set about learning about power generation. When I announced my intentions to my parents, my mom set down the guidelines by telling me it should be simple, cheap enough for everyone to afford and last a long time. The free energy device in this paper is the result. I actually got to this point at age 22 (I am now 58). I spent 12 years and tens of thousands of dollars while renting a farm trying to get lightning to hit one of my devices using weather balloons and some very expensive kites. I had also arranged with managers of local radio stations to put one near the lightning rod grounding cable of their large antennas, but all backed out citing liability for damage or injury. The University of Florida was using TOW wire-guided missiles for their lightning experiments. I wrote them twice in 5 years asking permission to put my device near theirs, and in each case, the reply was stop what you re doing, it s dangerous, and no you can t use our (federally funded) equipment. They did not tell me to stop paying taxes so they couldn t have it either. In a nutshell, I never did get a bolt of lightning to hit one of my prototypes. Since I no longer live on a farm, I can t just walk outside when the weather looks promising and try again.

Is it a Motor or a Generator?
It s both! A simple combination of a motor and a generator in one single, frictionless unit. A motor and a generator are built almost identically, but work in opposite ways. I started with an electric motor and figured there was room on each end for generating coils, too. Taking both ends off a motor, the armature came out too, along with the bearings. The armature in the motor is what spins when electricity is turned on. It has the magnets or electromagnets needed to turn the shaft in a motor. When electricity comes in through the coil of wire surrounding the shaft, the electromagnetic field in the coil of wire causes the magnets or electromagnets to repel, or spin away. In a generator, the armature is turned by something else, like a car motor, a waterfall or steam pressure from a nuclear reactor.. In a generator the magnets or electromagnets on the shaft spin to generate electricity in the coils of wire around it. At this point, putting generating coils at each end was no longer a problem since both ends were removed. The friction causing bearings were gone too, as were the brushes that transfer electricity to the shaft. Putting in a new armature was easy enough, but how could I stabilize it without a shaft and bearings? If the armature was made out of a magnet, I could put another magnet on each side of it near the end coils and it would float on a magnetic bearing. Suddenly the coils and magnets were in the way of each other. If the generating coils of wire had electricity running through them, wouldn t they produce a magnetic field to levitate the armature? YES! The next problem was how to start it? I came up with lots of ideas over the next few days, but realized I would have to completely saturate the entire unit with electricity all at once. As a fan of Erik von Daniken s Chariots of the Gods , I started wondering how ancient man could have done it. My theorizing may be wrong, but I recalled that the pyramids were once covered or capped with gold an outstanding lightning rod!

What is a Magnetic Bearing?

Most of us know that like particles repel and opposites attract . This means if you have two magnets and try to connect them together at both north poles, they will push each other away and the same happens if you try to put two south poles together. Like particles repel. If you have two magnets and try to connect a north and a south pole together, they grab each other and stick together. Opposites attract. If you cut or break a magnet in half, the two parts will not join together, but will repel each other. This area where they will not join together, whether north to north or south to south, is called a magnetic bearing, since one can be made to float above the other with negligible friction. This is called magnetic levitation. Many of us have seen, ridden on or at least heard of, maglev trains and monorails. Maglev is simply a shortened version of Magnetic Levitation. Since the use of permanent magnets would create an impossible maintenance problem keeping rust and other debris from the rails, permanent magnets are not used. Instead, electromagnets are used so that when they are shut off the magnetic field disappears and any debris that would normally stick to the rails falls off. The proper term then, is electromaglev, for ElectroMagnetic Levitaion.

Motor Ring

Fusion aficionados may note that the motor ring/generating-plate disk assembly forms an electromagnetic bottle skeleton'. In this design as well as my First Attempts design at the beginning of this paper, I had wanted more of an S shape for the armature to give it a direction of spin, but whether building it with a Tinkertoy or machining it from copper, the armature was easier to make with right angles. Here, I have already added a second arm to the first for more power and balance.

The Catalyst

Lightning!

How it Works

Before being charged, the armature rests on the bottom.

After being saturated with electricity, the armature repels off the bottom, top & sides and starts spinning in a direction opposite the way the arms are pointed. It rides on an electromaglev bearing.

It s rather amazing how many people think the energy crisis is a hoax and at the same time will insist that what you have will not work, because someone told them it wouldn t. Whatever. In the meantime, please feel free to make one and try to get lightning to hit it. I am willing to sell them to experimenters, but would not include marketing rights, or guarantees of any kind. I would have to charge about US $300.00 ea. unless I got enough requests to allow me to have them mass produced. Allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.
