Multicultural Matrix and Analysis SOC/315 Version 4

Part I: Matrix

What is the groups history in the United States?

What is the groups population in the United States?

What are some attitudes and customs people of this group may practice?

What is something you admire about this groups people, lifestyle, or society?

1. Native Americans

There are many different Native American tribes and each one is unique. Some Native American history is taught in school. We most commonly know of the Sacagawea and how they helped Lewis and Clark. Native Americans have also had to fight a battle to earn their own rights and freedom. The Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 gave Indians privileges to education, roads, and healthcare like we all should have.

There are over 30,000 Native Americans living in 16 urban areas of the United States, according to the Bureau of the Census.

Native Americans are typically patient. They live a very spiritual lifestyle. They are also group oriented.

I admire their fight to keep their history and legacy alive. So many of their people have moved on with society, but their spirituality stays strong to their heritage.

2. African American

Ancestors of African Americans were enslaved and brought over to North America. The Thirteenth Amendment of the constitution stopped the Slavery. The Fourteenth Amendment gave African Americans rights. Despite all the laws that were passed segregation laws were still in effect. After all that they have been through many of them went on to do great things for their race.

12.6% of the United States population is African American.

African American are spiritual people. Most of them attend a mostly black church which can be very electrifying. The household is mostly run by the mothers.

Despite the history behind African Americans, they strive to do the best at whatever it is they do, and this is what I admire about them.

3. Hispanic Americans

Hispanic Americans, for the most part, immigrated into the United States. Some Hispanic Americans come to the United States illegally; currently the United states is trying to find a way to address the estimated 30 million illegal immigrants.

15.8% of the United States population is Hispanic.

4. Jewish Americans

There wasnt a lot of Jewish Americans in the United States before the 1800s. After the end of the first World War, many Jewish immigrated to the United States.

The Jewish Americans make up 2% of the United states population.

I grew up with a lot of Hispanic American people in my neighborhood and one thing that I know they do is speak english to communicate with people that speak english and they speak Spanish to their family members and friends that speak the same language. They typically live with a lot of family somewhere nearby or within their own home. Jewish People stick to their faith and spiritual beliefs. We still see today in society that they wear the traditional clothing and eat the traditional foods. They hold ceremonies for certain events like Baror Mat Mitzvah and Simchat. In my opinion the Chinese and Japanese Americans make some of the best foods. A lot of which is traditional in their families. The Chinese celebrate Chinese New Year and the Japanese celebrate Obon festival in July or August.

I love that Hispanic Americans love their heritage and family so much and they appreciate each other. In some cases the mother or father will leave their family behind to come to the United States so they can have a better life, I personally cant see myself doing something like that so I take my hat off to them for that. I admire the celebration of the events that take place in the Jewish community. It shows that they strongly believe in continuing traditions.

Chinese & Japanese Americans

Chinese and Japanese Americans came to the United States because of the tourism. The Japanese endured imprisonment during the end of World War II.

Chinese Americans make up about 1% of the United States population.

I admire how important education is to the Chinese and Japanese Americans are. Like many other families, they believe in working hard to make sure their children have the best education they can get, even if that means that they are broke in the end.

Muslim & Arab Americans

Arabs and Muslim Americans have not been to popular in the United States recently due to the September 11,2001 attack on the World Trade Centers. A lot of them immigrated to the US in the 1900s.

Muslims make up .5% and Arabs make up .4% of the United States population.

Muslim and Arab Americans are very faithful to their religion. It shows through the way that they dress and the foods that they eat.

I really admire the women of the Muslim and Arab race. They take so much pride in the way that they dress to show respect for their husband as well as themselves.
