Chinatown was born in 1821 when the first Chinese junk arrived from China. The passengers made their homes on the southern banks of the Singapore River, known today as Telok Ayer. Households had to collect fresh water from wells in Ann Siang Hill and Spring Street using bullock drawn cart, giving rise to the Chinese name for Chinatown Niu Che Shui or Bullock Cart Water. Today, Chinatown is still a hub for Chinese culture, featuring colourful street decorations during major Chinese celebrations such as the Lunar New Year and the Mid-autumn Festival.
