I SEM. M. TECH. (CAMDA) DEGREE END SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS DECEMBER 2008 SUBJECT: ADVANCED MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS (MME-623) REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM (11 / 12 / 2008) Time: 3 Hours MAX.MARKS: 50 Instructions to Candidates: Answer ANY FIVE FULL questions. Additional data required, if any, may be appropriately assumed.

1A) Displacement is measured at low frequency and acceleration is measured at high frequency. Why? (02) 1B) In a vibrating system, a suspended mass of 8 kg makes 30 oscillations in 18 seconds. The amplitude decreases to 0.25 of the initial value after 5 oscillations. Determine i) Stiffness of the system ii) Logarithmic decrement and iii) Damping factor. (03) 1C) Discuss nonlinearity with respect to damping and derive Van der Pols equation. (05) 2A) Explain with derivation as how damping ratio is determined by 2 method. What is the significance of 2 in this method. (07) 2B) Determine the total stiffness of the springs used for mounting a bench grinder weighing 50 kg and rotating at 2500 rpm. Transmissibility ratio to be equal to or less than 0.2 . (03) 3A) An accelerometer has a suspended mass of 0.01 kg with a damped natural frequency of vibration of 150 Hz. When mounted on an engine undergoing an acceleration of 1 g at an operating speed of 6000 rpm, the acceleration is recorded as 9.5 m/s2 by the instrument. Find the damping constant and the spring stiffness of the accelerometer. (05) 3B) Explain Rayleigh damping. How values of and are decided. (05)

4B) Derive an expression for equation of motion of vibration of strings (continuous system). Discuss the vibration of transmission lines and (05) explain the use of Stockbridge dampers. 4C) In forced vibration, what are the conditions to be satisfied so that force transmitted to the foundation is minimum ? Explain with a graph. (02) 5A) Explain as how a geared system is modeled (transferring of equivalent stiffness and inertia from one axis to another) to calculate the natural frequency. (03) 5B) Derive the condition for calculating the natural frequency of a free-free system by Holzers method. (03) 5C) A small reciprocating machine weighs 25 kg and runs at a constant speed of 6000 rpm. After installation, the forcing frequency was found to be too close to the natural frequency of the system. Design a dynamic vibration absorber if the nearest natural frequency of the system is to be at least 20 % away from the excitation frequency. (04) 6A) Explain as how the rotors are designated. Why majority of the rotors are considered as rigid? (03) 6B) For the system shown in Fig. Q6B determine the approximate natural frequency using the concept of iteration. Also show as how Cholesky factorization is carried out. Assume an appropriate initial trial vector (07) and carryout only one iteration.
