Canada Americas Trade Related Technical Assistance (CATRTA) is a five year $17 million program funded by the Canadian International Development Agency and managed by The Conference Board of Canada. CATRTA is designed to meet the priority needs of Canada and Canadian FTA partner countries and sub-regions in the Americas that are focus countries of CIDA. The technical assistance will be delivered to government entities, the private sector and civil society on a regional, hemispheric or bilateral basis by Canadian and international experts from public and private organizations. The program includes the following activity groups: a focus on specific sub-project themes to enhance the capacity of the region to maximize the effectiveness of the environment and labour side agreements to the FTAs with Canada, as well as address specific capacity weaknesses regarding sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade facilitation, technical barriers to trade, trade promotion, labour and environmental side agreements, etc.; support to technical cooperation mechanisms in order to strengthen the Technical Cooperation Mechanisms created under the FTAs; monitoring, evaluation and knowledge management to promote learning and dissemination of lessons learned through the program.

The expected results of the program are to: Increase the ability of selected countries in the Americas to benefit from their FTAs with Canada; Improve market access, trade facilitation, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, crossborder trade in services, customs procedures, government procurement, etc., in the region; enhance capacity of the region to maximize the environment and labour side agreements to the FTAs with Canada; provide greater engagement and enhanced capacity of Canadian public sector actors, private sector and civil society to deliver TRTA; improve whole-of-government programming in TRTA in selected countries of the Americas consistent with CIDA's mandate to reduce poverty, promote human rights and increase sustainable development.

The goal of the CATRTA program is to assist CIDA country partners in Latin America and the Caribbean to maximize the opportunities and benefits of increased trade and investment through their bilateral FTAs with Canada and thus contributing to the reduction of poverty and the promotion of sustainable development.
