INLET VALVE REQUIREMENTS The valve shall be installed immediately upstream of the turbine and expansion/dismantling pipe. The valve shall operate as shut-off valve in case of turbine breakdown, to permit dewatering of the turbine for inspection and maintenance purposes. The valve shall also be operated during normal starting and stopping of the unit. The inlet valve shall be of the butterfly type with flanges for upstream connection to the penstock inlet pipe and downstream connection to an expansion/dismantling pipe and operating mechanism with servomotor and counterweight for closing. The design of the butterfly valve shall minimize the hydraulic losses through the valve. The valve shall have sufficient capacity to allow maximum flow of turbine discharge. All valve components and its operating mechanism shall be provided with eyebolts, lugs and other lifting connections and devices to facilitate the installation and removl of the components by the use of the powerhouse crane. It is foreseen that the oil-pressure unit of the turbine governor shall be used to operate the butterfly valve and bypass valve. Valve shall be designed to safely withstand the stresses due to the maximum hydraulic pressure obtainable including water thrust in penstock and shall be free from vibration and any abnormality under the whole operating range of turbine including any transient conditions of operation. Valve disc blocked in any position during the emergency closing of the valve under maximum water pressure and turbine wicket gates fully open. The inlet valve and its operating mechanism, pipe extensions, couplings and related bypass and drain system shall safely withstand the maximum pressure.

REQUIREMENT FOR CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIAL Valve Body The valve body shall be made as stress relieved cast steel or welded steel construction. The material type Q235A shall be used for the making of Valve body. It shall be heavily built and adequately ribbed to withstand deformation and vibration under maximum water pressure.

The valve body shall be provided with supporting feet designed for transmitting the all loads to base plates on a concrete pedestal. The necessary base plates, complete with anchor bolts, shall be furnished. The valve supporting feet shall permit any longitudinal movement. A highly erosion resistant stainless steel sealing seat (either weld-deposited make or of screwed in type) shall be provided at convenient place in the valve body. For sealing of the disk against the stainless steel seat of the valve body an easy replaceable solid rubber inset at the disk's circumference shall be used. An indicator with scale and pointer shall be provided for at the valve to indicate the disk position. It shall be of reasonable size and located at a convenient height. Valve Disc and Trunnions The disc shall be made of cast steel, properly heat treated or of welded steel plates properly stress relieved, or a combination of both, designed so as to minimize the hydraulic losses. Q235A material shall be used to make the disc. The disk shall be shaped to minimize flow disturbances and head losses. The trunnions shall be made of forged or cast steel and shall be securely and rigidly bolted-on and locked to the disc and levers of the operating mechanism and counterweight. Those portions of the trunnions passing through the stuffing boxes of the body hubs shall be protected with stainless steel sleeves. The bearing proper shall be of self-lubricating. The trunnions seals shall be designed to prevent water from entering the trunnion bearings and make ease in replacing these packing is essential. The maximum allowable leakage of inlet valve shall not exceed P.D/20 lit per minute where P=kg/cm2 and D=Inside diameter in m. Bearings, Housing for Trunnions The bearings shall be provided with seals to reduce leakages to a minimum. The replaceable valve bearing shall be of the bronze grease-lubricated or self-lubricated type and shall consist of a removable bearing liner and bearing support unless otherwise approved. The bushing sliding surfaces shall be made of suitable high-grade antifriction metal. Valve Seal A double sealing system shall be provided. The normal seal (main seal) shall be placed downstream. It shall consist of a rubber or other suitable non-metallic material, profile sealing against a stainless steel seat in the valve body. The seal shall be fixed by a clamping ring of non corrosive material and stainless steel screws. The seal arrangement shall be adjustable from the downstream side.

An additional seal (revision seal) shall be placed upstream of the main seal. The revision seal shall be pressed against the stainless steel seat by water from the penstock. Operation of this seal shall be manual. Bypass Bypass valve shall be of the needle valve actuator type and designed to assure the least amount of corrosion due to cavitation and cause the least amount of noise or vibration during operation. Metal sealing shall be provided to avoid any leakage water when the valve is closed. The operation of the by-pass valve shall be carried out by the pressure oil supply system for governor. The by-pass line shall be provided with one manual isolating valve upstream side of the needle valve to maintain the by-pass valve. By pass line shall also include a slip joint in between isolating valve and needle valve. The needle valve shall not show signs of vibration and cavitation when operating at any position between fully open and closed. The pipes, valve and others installed in the area where Cavitation is expected shall be made of stainless steel. The pipes, valve and others installed in the area where Cavitation is expected shall be made of stainless steel. The needle valve actuator shall include a valve position indicator with two adjustable limit switches. Penstock and Spiral Casing Drain A penstock/spiral casing drain line located on the turbine inlet pipe shall be furnished with one manually operated, flanged valves. The location and size of this drain shall be clearly indicated in the Contractor's Tender. Operating Mechanism Inlet valve operating mechanism shall be connected to withstand with sufficient strength and ensure smooth operation under all operating conditions of the turbine. All parts shall be designed and constructed so as to prevent distortions and deflections under all operating conditions. Special attention shall be paid to ease in inspection and maintenance. The cylinder shall be of cast steel or welded steel plate. The bore shall be machined and ground so as to assure a concentric and smooth finish, free from porosity and other defects.

The piston shall be of carbon steel casting or welded steel plate, with the piston assembly fastened properly to the piston rod. Minimum three numbers of piston ring, packing and cup leathers shall be designed and arranged so that inspection and replacement can be effected without disassembly of the cylinder. The piston rod shall be made of forged steel and shall be chromium plated The servomotor shall be single acting servomotor actuated by oil pressure from the turbine governor with sufficient capacity to supply the maximum forces required to open the butterfly valve through any full stroke with the minimum oil pressure. Closing shall be initiated by a counterweight directly connected to the trunnion by a sturdy lever, the actual closing torque shall be set up by the eccentric mounting of the disc. The torque of the weight and lever system shall be enough to close the valve under all specified conditions and within the range of the specified closing time. A mechanical locking device with padlock shall be provided for locking the manual guard valve in closed or open position during inspection and maintenance the inlet of valve and turbine. The opening and closing times shall be adjustable but the adjustment shall be such that, once set, they can not be readily or inadvertently altered. The closing motion shall be smooth using the hydraulic cylinder as a damper by means of an orifice mounted on the opening side of the servomotor. The movement of the valve disc shall be dampened before the disc reaches the open or closed position. Control Devices The main valve shall be opened at balanced pressures, but it must be designed to operate at unbalanced pressure of 30% also. The necessary interlocking shall be part of the supply. Two (2) pressure gauges, upstream and downstream of the butterfly valve shall be furnished complete with manual guard. The opening of the bypass, opening of the main valve and subsequent closing of the bypass shall also be made possible by manual operation of control valves. Emergency closure shall be provided: Electrically (2 solenoid valves with normally open contacts actuated by 2 separate 110 V DC independent systems). Manually by a lever actuated hydraulic valve in an easily accessible location on the turbine floor level.

All control valves (manual, solenoid, etc.), limit switches, piping, interlocking equipment, manometers, etc. for manual and remote control of the butterfly valve shall be part of the supply. All piping materials for interconnecting the equipment specified in the specifications shall be furnished by the Contractor so that the equipment specified herein can function as a complete set. Wiring The Contractor shall furnish all wiring materials for interconnecting the specifications shall be furnished on the wall of the pit and all wiring shall be gathered in the terminal block provided in the box. Accessories The Contractor shall furnish all other necessary accessories and foundation materials required for installation of the inlet valve including foundation bolts and nuts, base plates or soleplates, flanged connections. Stainless steel or corrosion resisting alloy steel shall be used for bolts and nuts throughout the work when subject to frequent adjustment or removal, and for bolts projecting from concrete with nuts subject to removal. All bolts and nuts in contact with water spray or moisture shall be stainless steel. Blind flanges shall be furnished to shutoff the two penstock branches for the hydrostatic pressure test of penstock and bifurcation. Also, the blind flanges will be used to shutoff a penstock branch in the event that a butterfly valve needs to be removed. The blind flange shall be of welded steel plate, designed and fabricated for a maximum design pressure at which pressure the working stress shall not exceed 50% of the material yield point. The hydrostatic test pressure shall be 150% higher than the design pressure. The blind flanges shall be furnished complete with lifting eyes or lugs to easy the installation and removal with the powerhouse bridge crane, gasket or O-ring, bolts and nuts, and when installed the blind flanged joint shall be drip-tight. 1 (one) set of all special tools and devices which are specially made and are required for assembling, adjusting and maintenance of the supply. 1 (one) special device to turn the valve disc for repair and maintenance when the oil pressure is not available. This disc turning device shall be operated by the powerhouse crane. Requirements for performance of the inlet valve shall be in accordance with the Clause 1.4 as applicable.
