Drug Free Montcalm Grants 4-H fair a great hoedown

How do youth end fair on a positive note? They have a hoedown! With the help of a DFM (Drug Free Montcalm) grant, 4H youth will be able to end their time at Fair in a constructive way. Fair is a time where a years worth of planning and work are finally showcased. It is a time of so many emotions: excitement, anxiety while getting judged and waiting for results, sometimes disappointment and sometimes jubilation. It is reuniting with old friends and meeting new ones. Living on these emotional roller coasters for a week can be tough on kids. So, as Fair wraps up and everyone is getting ready to go back and resume their normal lives, one last night is dedicated to giving the youth just a little bit of fun and an upbeat way to relieve some of those emotions. They have a dance and pizza party. Members of the Greenville Outlaws 4-H club wrote for a youth grant from Drug Free Montcalm to support this activity. It will allow youth to have a fun way to come down off the rush of Fair, and reinforce positive choices. Greenville Outlaws 4-H Club is spearheading this dance and pizza party. It is open to all three hundred-plus 4-H youth members. Said Sandy Spittka of the Greenville Outlaws 4-H group, This $500 grant allows us to help youth have one more night of safe fun, and it shows youth that they can have fun without drugs, alcohol or tobacco. They are getting one more constructive choice in entertainment! Plus, youth will be handling most of the work of this event, from decorating and promotion to set up and tear down.

Zellies Opry House welcomes the RFD Boys

Zellies Opry House is delighted to welcome the legendary bluegrass band, The RFD Boys, on Friday, Aug. 5. The RFD Boys have been delighting audiences since 1969 with their fabulous musicianship and sly, exquisitely timed between-song humor. With an appearance on the cover of Bluegrass Unlimited, with songs recorded by the likes of the Country Gentlemen, and with performances alongside bluegrass greats like Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley, the RFD Boys are a part of Americas bluegrass tradition. In the last three decades, the RFD Boys have shared stages with a whos who of bluegrass and country musicians, from Bill Monroe and Ralph Stanley to Ricky Skaggs and Randy Travis. Their music has taken them all over Michigan, the midwest and as far away as Europe. Come on out for what promises to be an exciting evening of live music, including a pre-show by the Zellies Opry House house band. Enjoy a full evening of entertainment in air-conditioned comfort for a mere $5/person. Tickets are available at Zellies Opry House, call (616) 260-3032 or www.zelliesopryhouse.com. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the pre-show at 6:10 p.m. and the concert beginning at 7 p.m.

Attention all wives, sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers of a veteran: When our loved ones were in the service we worked hard to help them in every aspect. Well ladies, now that they are out they need us all the more. All of the programs of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, NEED YOUR HELP! We are losing sisters every month. Our men and women are coming home but they need our help now more than ever. We need to work at getting better care and better health,

all needs we told them they would get once out. The politicians are always trying to cut benefits for veterans. We as

ENGAGEMENT
Behnke - Stadtfeld Engagement
Sarah Behnke and Jason Stadtfeld are happy to announce their upcoming marriage. Sarah is the daughter of Gary and Joann Behnke of Howard City. Jason is the son of Bill and Sandy Stadtfeld of Mecosta. The couple will be married on Sept. 17, 2011 in Remus where they will live.

Chapter 188 honored four of Michigans sons and their parents at a Blue to Gold Ceremony. The young men we honored were Joseph Prentler, David Huhn, Jacob Crebessa and Jeremiah Crebessa. Our rural community came together to honor and remember these young men for a short time at our county fair on the afternoon of July 9. There were friends and family, Fair Board members, Vietnam Vets, currently serving young men in uniform, Blue Star Mothers and some of the young men from Josephs unit that came in from all over the country just to be there with his Mom because he cant be any longer. The ceremony was short but full of meaning for all of us as we sat with these Mothers and Fathers to honor

their sons service. The service to our country that was paid with the ultimate sacrifice. The Gold Star Banner had a Gold Star covering a Blue Star, like at one time our Countrys Flag covered their caskets, and now the memories are all that is left that cover the life that is no longer with us. As we read their names may we stop a moment and remember what they meant to their Mothers and Fathers, they were their hearts. As I write this, it is July 20 th and today the flags are again flying at half-mast in our state, in honor of another one of Michigans fallen. May we never forget what each name represents as each Gold Star banner is presented, a Mothers and/or a Fathers heart that is gone.

Danny and Amber Nyson of Greenville became parents of a baby girl at Carson City Hospital. Mari Jayne Nyson was born at 3:10 pm on July 6, 2011. She was 7 pounds, 2 ounces and 20 inches long. Mari Jayne has two sisters; Tamara and Chelsie Nyson. Grandparents are Dan and Mary Nyson from Lakeview.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

until we receive a permanent occupancy permit. I dont understand the mind set of the Supervisor or the Board. I am at a total loss of what the board expects and why they would want to inflict hardships on their constituencies. Is this a dictatorship or not you decide feel free to come see for your self and make your own decision. robert richards Howard City could no long afford to live here. Whatever happened to our peaceful little village where children could play in the water without taking out a second mortgage on your house. What happened to not being afraid to put things in the yard without getting them stolen? What happened to caring about the people who live in the village? Mike sMith M-82, generally without any zoning approvals. The Township approval from the early 1990s was simply for a septic tank business. The Zoning Ordinance has not allowed the general excavating business, landscaping, outdoor materials storage or similar business on the property for well over 20 years. As for the heavy equipment storage, stock piling of materials and similar matters which are occurring on Mr. Powells parcel on the south side of M-82, none of those uses have been lawful in a residentially zoned area under the Zoning Ordinance. Since last Fall, Mr. Powell has received numerous letters from the Township regarding the zoning violations on his two properties, as well as Township suggestions about how to remedy those violations. The Township pointed out that Mr. Powell could either apply for a C-2 rezoning or apply for a use variance. However, the Township also noted that under both Michigan statute and the Zoning Ordinance, use variances are very difficult to obtain. One of the standards that the applicant must prove for a use variance is that the property is almost worthless as currently zoned and that the immediate hardship causing the need for the variance request was not created by any action of the applicant. Of course, for the parcel to the north, there are many uses which could occur (and are occurring) on the property. The denial of the use variance is not necessarily the end of this matter. Mr. Powell could apply for a rezoning to the C-2 zoning designation. Or alternately, he, or any member of the community, could request an amendment to the text of the C-1 zoning regulations in the Zoning Ordinance to allow landscaping and a nursery business within that zone as a matter of right. Given the way businesses have changed and evolved over the years, such an amendment might be appropriate. Mr. Powell, Willett Smith, and Louise Culver have met with Township officials this week to again outline the options Mr. Powell has to resolve these issues. It is our opinion this was an encouraging meeting with positive steps to bring Mr. Powells property into compliance. Given the rhetoric of Mr. Powell and some of his supporters, one would think that the Township is attempting to put him out of business. Nothing could be further from the truth. The Township wishes to see Mr. Powells business thrive, as we do all businesses in the community. It is important to keep in mind that these zoning issues are not a matter of liking or disliking a particular business or its owner. Rather, the issue is compliance with the law and whether everyone will have to comply with the Zoning Ordinance in a fair and uniform manner. keith Grannis Supervisor Reynolds Township

Unreasonable expectations of the supervisor or the board

Letter to the editor: In 2009 we purchased the property in Reynolds Township at 23156 W. Almy Rd., Howard City, and we began building our retirement home. We paid our $450 to the Board of Review requesting permission to occupy the walk-out basement while we were building, only the basement was done but not the main floor so the request was denied. We were told we could live there it was with in the ordinance. The township took us to Court and we lost, we did not meet all the codes. We paid the fines in 2010 we received a temporary camping permit to live on the property while we were building and added the upstairs on. Then we past all codes and received a temporary occupancy permit for the walkout lower level so we moved in. This was still not good enough so the Township took us back to Court and we lost once again because all the codes for the upstairs was not completed and we paid the fines. During the Court process we completed all inspections for the complete home and received a temporary occupancy permit for the entire dwelling but this is still not good enough for the Township. So the Township insisted that we can not live in our home

What happened to Howard City?

Letter to the editor: I used to be a proud citizen of Howard City, but not so much anymore. Talking to my wife after work and finding out that children are not allowed to play in sprinklers or use water to cool off on hot days because their water bill is too high is just awful. As a citizen of Howard City I think something should be done about the rising costs of water in the Village. I know that my water bill for last month was almost $90 for two people. That is higher then my gas bill. Maybe it is time for a change in the Village since every time you ask a question you get a run around. I for one would much rather see lower water bills and taxes then brick work uptown but then, I dont think we were ever asked. Besides how can they lower water bills and taxes when there are so many houses sitting empty because people

Answering concerns over zoning issues

Letter to the editor: This letter is in response to previous letters to the editor and many citizens questions concerning Mr. Powells zoning issues. Given the amount of misinformation circulating in the community regarding the Powell zoning matters, we believe it was necessary to respond. First, Reynolds Township officials have attempted to work with Mr. Powell for well over a year to bring both of his properties (his property on the north side of M-82 involving excavating, septic, landscaping and other businesses, as well as the property immediately across the street to the south) into compliance with the Reynolds Township Zoning Ordinance. Over the last 20 years, Mr. Powell has expanded his business and uses on his property on the north side of

A bad attitude can cost you custody

By Jeanne L. Jerow, Attorney, Counselor, Mediator Howard City They started with joint custody. In 2009 the Chippewa County Circuit Court granted Ms. Mattson and Mr. Stark joint custody of their daughter, who was still a very young child. Both parents doted on her. Both wanted the best for her. For the next six months they tried to make it work, but there had been a lot of love lost in their breakup. And Mother could not keep her ill feelings toward Dad under control. Mother was antagonistic. While she was with either parent the child was well cared for and loved. The schedule was two days with one parent, two days with the other, and alternating three-day weekends. Thus each parent had ve uninterrupted days at a time. But there were words during exchanges. Mother displayed anger. She was belligerent. She shouted in front of the child. She went out of her way to let him know how she felt about him. Each time, the child was with her. Eventually Mother lost custody. Theres a law the Best Interests law. A judge can only change custody if the court nds that based on 13 different factors it weighs the change is in the minor childs best interests. For the most part, these parents could have been found equal on most factors but for Moms repeated inability to be nice. Even if she didnt like Dad, and even if he might have been a real schmuck in her eyes, she had crossed the line with her inability to hold her tongue in front of the child. Clear and convincing evidence. There was clear and convincing evidence in court that since entry of the last custody order the conditions mother was subjecting the child to meaning how Mom was treating Dad in front of the child could have a signicant effect on the childs well-being. Heres the big lesson - Dad didnt have to prove that Moms behavior had already affected the childs wellbeing. It was only necessary that it could have a signicant effect. (Well, of course it could. Imagine how upset a child could be if she has to see one parent treat the other badly - even once!) So be nice to your childs other parent. Hold your tongue. Besides, its what we expect from grown-ups (and politicians, but thats for another column). Jeanne Jerow practices in Howard City. Divorce & Custody, Certicate in Estate Plans, Probate, Wills & Trusts, Auto Accidents, and Property Law. Remember, because you read it here, its not your personal legal advice. Dont depend on it.

She should have bit her lip. The Judge discussed the evidence: in March, 2010 Mother had come to Fathers home with the child in tow, shouting and cursing, and refused to leave when asked. Dad had then openly videotaped her ranting which he showed the judge during the custody hearing. On another occasion Dad already had the child in his arms when Mother decided to refuse to let the child go because Dad had showed up late. Mother grabbed her and sent her into the house. On more than one occasion Mother had verbally assaulted Father in front of the child (meaning yelled accusations and/or threats). And once, Mother was so angry she told the child it would be okay to run away from Fathers home.

RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 2011

As we were getting ready to leave on a vacation to Hawaii, many times I heard those words. You are so Lucky, we cant afford to do that. The truth is I am lucky, but not in the sense that most people mean it. My denition of luck is: Priorities and Planning Meet Preparedness. We decided about two years ago we wanted to take a trip to Hawaii since neither of us had been there before. So the Planning begins! Saving money. Watching for deals on airfare and accommodations. So think about this process. You make a decision to do something. In your mind you see yourself there and creative process begins automatically. If you never decide to go, nothing will ever happen. So the rst step is the choice to do it. Next step is: how much mohlah are you going to need to make this happen. This is the Preparedness. Money is called currency. It is like the current in a stream. It implies ow and movement. In order for money to do something for you, it must move and go somewhere or to someone in exchange for what you desire. Currency does no good in your pocket. But to take a trip you need to accumulate some deniro to exchange for that trip. You do not want to do this on a credit card. Save up front, so it is all paid for. Lets say you need $5000.00. For most of us, we look at that and feel overwhelmed. We often think, I just do not have that kind of money. You are lucky to be able to do that, but I cannot afford it. So look at your budget. Ask yourself, How can I afford this? Where could you squeeze out a little money each month to begin accumulating some bling for that trip? Here are a few places in our daily lives where we could make some changes. Some people smoke. At, lets say, $4.00 per pack, which is $120.00 per month or $1440 per year. If you go out for dinner to Applebees or to the movies once a week for $30, that is $1500 per year. I used to party once month or more and spend easily $50, so that is $600. Most people spend $50 to $150 per month on cable TV. At the average rate, we have another $1200. How many of us buy doodads all time, junk that we do not need? Many of us spend $2-$5 per day for coffee and snacks. Another $1000 per year. Pack a lunch instead of eating out. Once you look, there are lots of possibilities. So, we have the three Ps: Priority, Planning and Preparedness. Once, we decide to go on this trip, to recharge our solar batteries, and see the world, we must make some priority decisions to budget the ow of some of that currency into the trip fund. It might take two or three years to build up your fun fund, but it will be well worth it. When you begin thinking like this, things happen. We found a great deal on a cruise that was half the usual price. That happened because we were prepared, not because we were lucky. Changing your thinking like this is great for your health. You eliminate a bunch of really bad, unhealthy habits and convert them into life-changing, mind-expanding experiences. A week of sun xes the winter blues and greatly helps seasonal depression. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

You are so Lucky!!

Gasoline By The Numbers
By Craig W. Armstrong
Living with todays economy can be a challenge. Prices go up but paychecks often stay the same; making ends meet can be tough. One way to confront this problem is with math. You may consider math another four-letter word. However, better understanding where your hard-earned money is going can help you keep your nances in line... and that takes simple math. One cost that uctuates a great deal is the cost of gasoline. One week its high and the next week its probably higher. If you know the mileage your vehicle is getting, however, you might be able to make adjustments and save a few bucks. Like keeping your home clean, vigilance is the key. Clean out your car once a week. If you spend any time in your car you are going to accumulate stuff during the course of a week. To keep these items from taking over the interior, you can throw them away, organize them in the car or move them out of the car. Although manufacturers indicate a vehicles city/highway MPG (miles per gallon), those numbers will uctuate based on the driver and driving conditions. So how do you accurately gure the mileage you are getting with your vehicle? First, prepare a worksheet to record data; you can use a notebook or a computer-generated spreadsheet. Whichever you choose, make sure you have a column for each of the following: Date (on which you purchase gas), Odometer Reading, Miles Traveled, Gallons and MPG (Miles Per Gallon). (For budgeting purposes, you may want to keep a record of Amount you spent for gas also.) Now head to the gas station and ll up your tank. Be sure to use the lock on the nozzle handle so that the pump shuts off automatically when the tank is full. Do not top off the tank. Before you leave the gas station, record the date and the odometer reading and set your trip meter. The next step is easy...just drive. When your fuel gauge registers about a quarter of a tank, head back to the gas station and ll up again. This time, record both your Odometer Reading and the number of Gallons (found on the pump) used to ll up your vehicle. You can nd Miles Traveled in two ways. You can look at your trip meter (if it hasnt been accidentally reset) or you can subtract your current odometer reading from the original reading you logged on your worksheet. For example, if your rst odometer reading was 46,526 and your current reading is 46,852, you have traveled (46,852 minus 46,526) 326 miles. Next divide the miles you have traveled by the number of gallons of gas you just used-lets say 15.2, 326 divided by 15.2-and youll have your miles per gallon. In this case, your MPG is 21.4. However, this reading is accurate for only this tank of gas. You will want to average several llups to get an accurate idea of your vehicles MPG. Averaging is easy; just add your miles per gallon notations and divide by the number of notations listed. For example, if you have recorded four MPG gures on your sheet, 21.4, 20.8, 22.7, 19.7, add them all together for 84.6. Now divide that number by four and you have your average, 21.2 miles per gallon. So, what do you do with those numbers? See if you can improve your gas mileage. How? The rst thing is by performing simple maintenance. Are the tires properly inated? Do you have the oil changed regularly? Is the air lter clean? Next consider your driving habits. Do you let your vehicle idle for long periods of time? Do you often drive in stop-and-go trafc? Are you a speed demon? Do you start quickly and stop suddenly? Making adjustments and then checking your MPG will let you know how much you are saving at the pump. The process will take minimal time, but once you get the hang of it, you might nd it fun imagine that, saving money while having fun with math.

All Tuned Up
By Tresa Erickson

Automotive Guide
The best shops understand that not all drivers know what a tune-up is and request one on the assumption that it will x whatever is wrong with their vehicle. They will ask why you think your vehicle needs a tune-up and go from there. You may discover that what you really need are new battery cables rather than new spark plugs. Once you have several estimates, sit down and compare them. Select the shop whose estimate includes a fairly thorough inspection at a fair price. You want to make sure that when you drive away from the shop your vehicle is running smoothly and efciently. The term tune-up means different things to different people. Keep that in mind as you shop around for estimates. Know what you are getting before you take your vehicle in, and if you are getting a tune-up for any reason other than maintenance issues, relay that information to the shop. If you dont, you could end up paying for a tune-up plus a repair.

RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 2011

Most of us know that regular maintenance is key to a well-running vehicle. Thats why we get our oil changed, have our tires rotated and so forth. Another important part of the regular maintenance schedule is the tune-up. Because the internal workings of vehicles have changed so much over the years, the denition of a tune-up may vary from the simple replacement of spark plugs to the complete overhaul of several areas within the vehicle. Most experts agree that the best tune-ups involve an inspection of several areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain control, fuel, ignition and emissions. Not every shop denes a tune-up in this way, however. Generally, the more involved the tune-up, the more it costs. When scheduling a tune-up, it is important that you nd out what it will entail and how much it will cost. Be wary of really low estimates; chances are the shop is pushing for your business and the nal bill for the tuneup will be much higher.

Going Spareless:
By Tresa Erickson

MONDAY, AUGUST 1, 2011 RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER

27

The Good And The Bad

Many of us have had to deal with a at tire at some point or another. Getting out the spare, jacking up the vehicle and changing the at tire are no fun, especially when you are dressed up and on your way to work or a special event. Imagine never having to do that again. Sound good to you? Then youll be happy to know that run-at tires are making their way onto vehicles. Although run-at tires were introduced in 1994, they have only recently become available on more vehicles. Currently, there are two basic types: self-supporting tires (SST) and patented auxiliary support tires (PAX). Both are designed to support the weight of a vehicle for 100 miles or more and allow drivers to continue moving down the road until they can nd a shop to repair the at. SSTs rely upon heavily reinforced sidewalls to support the vehicles weight, while PAXs rely upon semi-rigid support rings. Run-at tires offer many benets, most importantly, convenience. Drivers dont have

to worry about pulling over and changing a at tire. They can leave that to the repair shop. They dont have to carry all of the tools necessary for changing a at tire, giving them more space for other things. Some auto manufacturers, in fact, have taken advantage of this extra space to incorporate other features into their models. Vehicles with run-at tires have a tire pressure monitoring system, which lets drivers know when one of their tires has lost pressure and reduces the threat of a blowout. In instances where a blowout does occur, runat tires can handle the sudden deation better than standard tires, allowing drivers to maintain stability. Because the technology is relatively new, run-at tires do pose some problems. Runat tires are heavier, adding to the vehicles weight and using more gas. According to some consumers, run-at tires do not last nearly as long as standard tires. Replacements typically cost more than standard tires and are not readily available at all shops. In some cases, run-at tires can be repaired, but nding a shop with the equipment and knowledge to do so can be difcult.

As run-at tires become more commonplace, the problems with them will no doubt be worked out. In the meantime, consumers may want to take the purchase of a vehicle with run-at tires into serious consideration. They should learn all that they can about the tires, including how much they cost and how easily they can be repaired and replaced.
