Attention all wives, sisters, daughters, mothers and grandmothers of a veteran: When our loved ones were in the service we worked hard to help them in every aspect. Well ladies, now that they are out they need us all the more. All of the programs of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, NEED YOUR HELP! We are losing sisters every month. Our men and women are coming home but they need our help now more than ever. We need to work at getting better care and better health,
all needs we told them they would get once out. The politicians are always trying to cut benefits for veterans. We as
ENGAGEMENT
Behnke - Stadtfeld Engagement
Sarah Behnke and Jason Stadtfeld are happy to announce their upcoming marriage. Sarah is the daughter of Gary and Joann Behnke of Howard City. Jason is the son of Bill and Sandy Stadtfeld of Mecosta. The couple will be married on Sept. 17, 2011 in Remus where they will live.
Chapter 188 honored four of Michigans sons and their parents at a Blue to Gold Ceremony. The young men we honored were Joseph Prentler, David Huhn, Jacob Crebessa and Jeremiah Crebessa. Our rural community came together to honor and remember these young men for a short time at our county fair on the afternoon of July 9. There were friends and family, Fair Board members, Vietnam Vets, currently serving young men in uniform, Blue Star Mothers and some of the young men from Josephs unit that came in from all over the country just to be there with his Mom because he cant be any longer. The ceremony was short but full of meaning for all of us as we sat with these Mothers and Fathers to honor
their sons service. The service to our country that was paid with the ultimate sacrifice. The Gold Star Banner had a Gold Star covering a Blue Star, like at one time our Countrys Flag covered their caskets, and now the memories are all that is left that cover the life that is no longer with us. As we read their names may we stop a moment and remember what they meant to their Mothers and Fathers, they were their hearts. As I write this, it is July 20 th and today the flags are again flying at half-mast in our state, in honor of another one of Michigans fallen. May we never forget what each name represents as each Gold Star banner is presented, a Mothers and/or a Fathers heart that is gone.

She should have bit her lip. The Judge discussed the evidence: in March, 2010 Mother had come to Fathers home with the child in tow, shouting and cursing, and refused to leave when asked. Dad had then openly videotaped her ranting which he showed the judge during the custody hearing. On another occasion Dad already had the child in his arms when Mother decided to refuse to let the child go because Dad had showed up late. Mother grabbed her and sent her into the house. On more than one occasion Mother had verbally assaulted Father in front of the child (meaning yelled accusations and/or threats). And once, Mother was so angry she told the child it would be okay to run away from Fathers home.

As we were getting ready to leave on a vacation to Hawaii, many times I heard those words. You are so Lucky, we cant afford to do that. The truth is I am lucky, but not in the sense that most people mean it. My denition of luck is: Priorities and Planning Meet Preparedness. We decided about two years ago we wanted to take a trip to Hawaii since neither of us had been there before. So the Planning begins! Saving money. Watching for deals on airfare and accommodations. So think about this process. You make a decision to do something. In your mind you see yourself there and creative process begins automatically. If you never decide to go, nothing will ever happen. So the rst step is the choice to do it. Next step is: how much mohlah are you going to need to make this happen. This is the Preparedness. Money is called currency. It is like the current in a stream. It implies ow and movement. In order for money to do something for you, it must move and go somewhere or to someone in exchange for what you desire. Currency does no good in your pocket. But to take a trip you need to accumulate some deniro to exchange for that trip. You do not want to do this on a credit card. Save up front, so it is all paid for. Lets say you need $5000.00. For most of us, we look at that and feel overwhelmed. We often think, I just do not have that kind of money. You are lucky to be able to do that, but I cannot afford it. So look at your budget. Ask yourself, How can I afford this? Where could you squeeze out a little money each month to begin accumulating some bling for that trip? Here are a few places in our daily lives where we could make some changes. Some people smoke. At, lets say, $4.00 per pack, which is $120.00 per month or $1440 per year. If you go out for dinner to Applebees or to the movies once a week for $30, that is $1500 per year. I used to party once month or more and spend easily $50, so that is $600. Most people spend $50 to $150 per month on cable TV. At the average rate, we have another $1200. How many of us buy doodads all time, junk that we do not need? Many of us spend $2-$5 per day for coffee and snacks. Another $1000 per year. Pack a lunch instead of eating out. Once you look, there are lots of possibilities. So, we have the three Ps: Priority, Planning and Preparedness. Once, we decide to go on this trip, to recharge our solar batteries, and see the world, we must make some priority decisions to budget the ow of some of that currency into the trip fund. It might take two or three years to build up your fun fund, but it will be well worth it. When you begin thinking like this, things happen. We found a great deal on a cruise that was half the usual price. That happened because we were prepared, not because we were lucky. Changing your thinking like this is great for your health. You eliminate a bunch of really bad, unhealthy habits and convert them into life-changing, mind-expanding experiences. A week of sun xes the winter blues and greatly helps seasonal depression. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.

Gasoline By The Numbers
By Craig W. Armstrong
Living with todays economy can be a challenge. Prices go up but paychecks often stay the same; making ends meet can be tough. One way to confront this problem is with math. You may consider math another four-letter word. However, better understanding where your hard-earned money is going can help you keep your nances in line... and that takes simple math. One cost that uctuates a great deal is the cost of gasoline. One week its high and the next week its probably higher. If you know the mileage your vehicle is getting, however, you might be able to make adjustments and save a few bucks. Like keeping your home clean, vigilance is the key. Clean out your car once a week. If you spend any time in your car you are going to accumulate stuff during the course of a week. To keep these items from taking over the interior, you can throw them away, organize them in the car or move them out of the car. Although manufacturers indicate a vehicles city/highway MPG (miles per gallon), those numbers will uctuate based on the driver and driving conditions. So how do you accurately gure the mileage you are getting with your vehicle? First, prepare a worksheet to record data; you can use a notebook or a computer-generated spreadsheet. Whichever you choose, make sure you have a column for each of the following: Date (on which you purchase gas), Odometer Reading, Miles Traveled, Gallons and MPG (Miles Per Gallon). (For budgeting purposes, you may want to keep a record of Amount you spent for gas also.) Now head to the gas station and ll up your tank. Be sure to use the lock on the nozzle handle so that the pump shuts off automatically when the tank is full. Do not top off the tank. Before you leave the gas station, record the date and the odometer reading and set your trip meter. The next step is easy...just drive. When your fuel gauge registers about a quarter of a tank, head back to the gas station and ll up again. This time, record both your Odometer Reading and the number of Gallons (found on the pump) used to ll up your vehicle. You can nd Miles Traveled in two ways. You can look at your trip meter (if it hasnt been accidentally reset) or you can subtract your current odometer reading from the original reading you logged on your worksheet. For example, if your rst odometer reading was 46,526 and your current reading is 46,852, you have traveled (46,852 minus 46,526) 326 miles. Next divide the miles you have traveled by the number of gallons of gas you just used-lets say 15.2, 326 divided by 15.2-and youll have your miles per gallon. In this case, your MPG is 21.4. However, this reading is accurate for only this tank of gas. You will want to average several llups to get an accurate idea of your vehicles MPG. Averaging is easy; just add your miles per gallon notations and divide by the number of notations listed. For example, if you have recorded four MPG gures on your sheet, 21.4, 20.8, 22.7, 19.7, add them all together for 84.6. Now divide that number by four and you have your average, 21.2 miles per gallon. So, what do you do with those numbers? See if you can improve your gas mileage. How? The rst thing is by performing simple maintenance. Are the tires properly inated? Do you have the oil changed regularly? Is the air lter clean? Next consider your driving habits. Do you let your vehicle idle for long periods of time? Do you often drive in stop-and-go trafc? Are you a speed demon? Do you start quickly and stop suddenly? Making adjustments and then checking your MPG will let you know how much you are saving at the pump. The process will take minimal time, but once you get the hang of it, you might nd it fun imagine that, saving money while having fun with math.

All Tuned Up
By Tresa Erickson
Automotive Guide
The best shops understand that not all drivers know what a tune-up is and request one on the assumption that it will x whatever is wrong with their vehicle. They will ask why you think your vehicle needs a tune-up and go from there. You may discover that what you really need are new battery cables rather than new spark plugs. Once you have several estimates, sit down and compare them. Select the shop whose estimate includes a fairly thorough inspection at a fair price. You want to make sure that when you drive away from the shop your vehicle is running smoothly and efciently. The term tune-up means different things to different people. Keep that in mind as you shop around for estimates. Know what you are getting before you take your vehicle in, and if you are getting a tune-up for any reason other than maintenance issues, relay that information to the shop. If you dont, you could end up paying for a tune-up plus a repair.
Most of us know that regular maintenance is key to a well-running vehicle. Thats why we get our oil changed, have our tires rotated and so forth. Another important part of the regular maintenance schedule is the tune-up. Because the internal workings of vehicles have changed so much over the years, the denition of a tune-up may vary from the simple replacement of spark plugs to the complete overhaul of several areas within the vehicle. Most experts agree that the best tune-ups involve an inspection of several areas, including the battery, engine mechanical, powertrain control, fuel, ignition and emissions. Not every shop denes a tune-up in this way, however. Generally, the more involved the tune-up, the more it costs. When scheduling a tune-up, it is important that you nd out what it will entail and how much it will cost. Be wary of really low estimates; chances are the shop is pushing for your business and the nal bill for the tuneup will be much higher.

Going Spareless:

to worry about pulling over and changing a at tire. They can leave that to the repair shop. They dont have to carry all of the tools necessary for changing a at tire, giving them more space for other things. Some auto manufacturers, in fact, have taken advantage of this extra space to incorporate other features into their models. Vehicles with run-at tires have a tire pressure monitoring system, which lets drivers know when one of their tires has lost pressure and reduces the threat of a blowout. In instances where a blowout does occur, runat tires can handle the sudden deation better than standard tires, allowing drivers to maintain stability. Because the technology is relatively new, run-at tires do pose some problems. Runat tires are heavier, adding to the vehicles weight and using more gas. According to some consumers, run-at tires do not last nearly as long as standard tires. Replacements typically cost more than standard tires and are not readily available at all shops. In some cases, run-at tires can be repaired, but nding a shop with the equipment and knowledge to do so can be difcult.
As run-at tires become more commonplace, the problems with them will no doubt be worked out. In the meantime, consumers may want to take the purchase of a vehicle with run-at tires into serious consideration. They should learn all that they can about the tires, including how much they cost and how easily they can be repaired and replaced.
