Today, I am very happy to be here to present my graduation paper. First of all, I would like to give my sincere thanks to Mrs. Nguyen Thi Yen Thoa, whose encouragement, guidance and willingness motivated me to finish my study. Besides that, I would like to thank all teachers in foreign languages department for giving enthusiasm and sympathies to lift us to be the better ones as we are today. As we know, vocabulary is basic for communication. If you are a student who knows good grammar but you dont know a lot of vocabulary; that means you dont communicate effectively. In order to enrich vocabulary, one way to learn is studying word-formation in which conversion is important basic process of wordformation. And in my study, I only choose the verbs formed by conversion because verbs are main component in the sentence, we cannot express our ideas without verbs. To be a successful English learner, we not only study grammar but also study vocabulary carefully. That is reason why I choose my study A study on verbs formed by conversion in English. Now, I would like to give the organization of my study. There are 3 parts in this study. The first part is introduction in which I have mentioned 5 small contents which are rationale, aims of study, scope of study, methods of study, design of study. The second part is development which is the most important part in my study. The basic knowledge about words, verbs and conversion will be presented in Chapter 1. Especially, in the overview of words, my study has mentioned 8 processes of word-formation, respectively: affixation, compounding, shortening, conversion, sound imitation, back derivation, sound & stress interchange, word from noun. Regarding to chapter 2, my study has dealt with the issue that is

formation of verbs by conversion in English. There are 2 main contents; the first is verbs formed by noun-to-verb conversion in which there are 7 ways mentioned:

Verbs derived from nouns denoting tools or instruments Verbs derived from nouns denoting animals Verbs derived from nouns denoting part of body Verbs derived from nouns denoting professional Verbs derived from nouns denoting places Verbs derived from nouns denoting colors Verbs derived from nouns denoting means of transportation and
communication

The second is Verbs formed by adjective-to-verb conversion

Adjectives are used to form transitive verbs Adjectives are used to form intransitive verbs
From the study, we have found some benefits of study as well as some problems faced by learners of English in chapter 3. Moreover, in this chapter, English learners also know some advice for studying verbs formed by conversion and doing some exercise for practice. And the last part is conclusion. My study has summarized all things mentioned above and suggested for further study.

Concerning to analysis part, I choose a small part in my graduation paper to present that is Verbs derived from nouns denoting parts of body. Now, we consider some examples to make clear this way to form verbs. - I put my hand into my pocket and pulled out the letter.(1) [Lacviet_Diotek_Diodict_2005-2010] - He handed me a little rectangle of white paper.(2) [Lacviet_Diotek_Diodict_2005-2010] In the first example, hand is a noun denoting a part of body at the end of your arm, each hand has 4 fingers and a thumb. But, in the second example handed is a verb derived from the noun hand that means to give St to Sb. So in this example He handed me a little rectangle of white paper means He gave me a little rectangle of white paper. Please look at this example: Eye Eg: -> to eye - I opened my eyes and looked.(3) [Lacviet_Diotek_Diodict_2005-2010] - Sally eyed Claire with interest.(4) [Lacviet_Diotek_Diodict_2005-2010 ] The verb eyed in 4 example come from the noun eye which is a part of body used to see. Therefore, the verb to eye means to see someone/something. And in the example Sally eyed Claire with interest, we also understand as follow Sally saw Claire with interest. Next, we consider 2 following example:

to knee [Lacviet_Diotek_Diodict_2005-2010] - I knee him in the groin.(6) [Lacviet_Diotek_Diodict_2005-2010]

- He will receive physiotherapy on his damage left knee.(5)

The noun knee refers to part of body where your leg blends, so for this reason, the verb to knee means to kick someone by knee. In six example I knee him in the groin, we can understand I kick him in the groin by knee. Last, please see this example: Nose Eg: -> to nose - She wiped her nose with a tissue.(7) [Lacviet_Diotek_Diodict_2005-2010] - The dogs nosed after their quarry.(8) [http://tratu.soha.vn/dict] We can recognize that there is a conversion from noun to verb between 2 examples. The meaning of the verb Nosed come from the meaning of the noun nose which is a noun denoting a part of body using to smell and breathing. Thus, when it is converted into verb, it means to search for something or to push something with nose. After analyzing all these examples, English learners can understand clearly about the way to form verbs from noun denoting part of body by conversion. Some nouns denoting the part of body can be converted into verbs.

A part from this study, learners should notice the exceptional case that is the noun arm. The noun in the first case is a noun denoting a part of body but the noun in the second case is a borrow word from French denoting weapons, especial bombs and guns. So that when it is a verb, it means to provide weapons for someone. It isnt conversion.

To sum up, I summarize some conclusion as follow: Most of nouns denoting part of body can be converted into verbs. Basing on the function of the part of body, we can guess the meaning of the verb converted from noun naming the part of body because the verbs generally denote an action performed by it. There is one special case arm that we should notice. Because of limitation of time and limitation of my knowledge, the mistake of my study is unavoidable. So I hope all advice, contribution coming from my teachers, friends and readers will make my paper better and better. Besides that, I hope my paper can contribute partly to learners process of study.
