What is Zigbee? ZigBee is the set of specs built around the IEEE 802.15.4 wireless protocol. The 802 group is the section of the IEEE involved in network operations and technologies, including mid-sized networks and local networks. Group 15 deals specifically with wireless networking technologies and 4 specifies low data rate consuming less power .The standard itself is regulated by a group known as the ZigBee Alliance, with over 150 members worldwide. Zigbee comes under the wireless personal area network (WPAN). Zigbee is the low-cost, lowpower wireless standard supporting lowdata-rate, and long-battery-life, secure networking for monitoring and control. Origin Of Name ZigBee: The domestic honeybee, a colonial insect, lives in a hive that contains a queen, a few male drones, and thousands of worker bees. The survival, success, and future of the colony is dependent upon continuous communication of vital information between every member of the colony. The technique that honey bees use to communicate new-found food sources to other members of the colony is referred to as the ZigBee Principle. Using this silent, but powerful communication system, whereby the bee dances in a zig-zag pattern, she is able to share information such as the location, distance, and direction of a newly discovered food source to her fellow colony members. Instinctively implementing the ZigBee Principle, bees around the world industriously sustain productive hives and foster future generations of colony members.

ZigBee/IEEE 802.15.4 Characteristics:

Fully hand-shaked protocol for transfer reliability Range: 50m typical (5-500m based on environment) Zigbee applications: As a newly emerging wireless technology, Zigbee applications are growing rapidly in a variety of areas such as intelligent home appliance system, industrial monitoring and sensor system, building security and control, and etc Its low power consumption, networking features and easy implementation have brought wide prospects in the applications.

retailers, and obtain directions or information on public spaces with GPS. ZigBee Telecom Services supports the needs of a diverse, global ecosystem of product manufacturers, mobile phone network operators, businesses and governments as they look for new ways to interact with the public. All ZigBee Telecom Services products are ZigBee Certified to perform regardless of manufacturer, allowing anyone to purchase with confidence. Leading telecommunication companies, product manufacturers and technology companies lead the development of this standard, including Phillips, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, OKI, Huawei, Motorola and Texas Instruments. Zigbee health care: ZigBee Health Care offers a global standard for interoperable products enabling secure and reliable monitoring and management of noncritical, low-acuity healthcare services targeted at chronic disease, aging independence and general health, wellness and fitness. These smart and easy-to-use products promote aging independence along with greater overall health, wellness and fitness awareness. A variety of these products even offer an innovative connection with health care professionals like doctors and nurses, allowing them to monitor your health even while you're at home.

Zigbee telecom servies: ZigBee Telecom Services offers a global standard for interoperable products enabling a wide variety of value-added services, including information delivery, mobile gaming, location-based services, secure mobile payments, mobile advertising, zone billing, mobile office access control, payments, and peer-to-peer data-sharing services. This single standard offers an affordable and easy way to introduce innovative new services that touch almost everyone using mobile phones and other portable electronic devices. It offers a variety of value-added services for mobile phone network operators, retailers, businesses, and governments. Now these groups have new ways to reach prospective customers. Consumers can use their mobile phones to pay for products and services, create their own gaming and communication networks, receive discounts or coupons from

ZigBee Health Care supports the needs of a diverse global ecosystem of service providers, care providers, payers, product manufacturers and policymakers in providing a standard way to easily monitor, control and automate the delivery and use of health, wellness and fitness data for home and professional uses. Leading health care and technology companies are supporting the development of ZigBee Health Care, including Motorola, Phillips, Freescale Semiconductor, Awarepoint and RF Technologies. ZigBee Alliance has joined forces with the Continua Health Alliance, a non-profit, open industry coalition of the finest health care and technology companies collaborating to improve the quality of personal health care. Continua has endorsed ZigBee Health Care as its low-power local area network (LAN) standard in the Continua 2010 Design Guidelines. ZigBee Smart Energy: The increased consumption of electricity combined with a general lack of new electric power generation facilities has created the need to reduce electric consumption and have better control of the electric load in residential buildings. This need is clearly evident because utility companies are looking for smart ways to control rising energy usage while limiting capital expenditures. At the same time, rising fuel and energy cost are causing consumers to look at new ways to become more efficient in their own energy usage.

The ZigBee Smart Energy profile provides the necessary tools for utility companies and home owners to create a more energy efficient home environment. ZigBee-enabled meters can communicate and control ZigBee enabled devices in the home, such as the heating, cooling and air conditioning systems to enable utility company programs such as load control, demand response and time of use pricing. These programs not only reduce the peak load on the utility grid, but also help the home owners make smart decisions about their energy usage. Home automation: ZigBee Home Automation offers a global standard for interoperable products enabling smart homes that can control appliances, lighting, environment, energy management, and security as well as expand to connect with other ZigBee networks. Smarter homes allow consumers to save money, be more environmentally aware, feel more secure and enjoy a variety of conveniences that make homes easier and less expensive to maintain. All ZigBee Home Automation products are ZigBee Certified to perform regardless of manufacturer, allowing anyone to purchase with confidence. These products are ideal for new construction, do-ityourself and retrofit markets and are easy to use, maintain and install.
