Answer any FIVE questions

All questions carry equal marks
---
1.a) From fundamentals derive the equation for the orbit in which the
satellite revolves. Using the equation of the orbit, justify the
kepler’s laws of planetory motion.
b) Give the procedure to locate satellite in the orbit by mentioning the
equations used.
c) Obtain velocity of the space shuttle orbitting circularly at an
altitude of 250 kms above the surface of earth. Find the linear
velocity of the shuttle along its orbit. Assume earth’s radius as
6370 kms.

2.a) Define look angles of the satellite. Explain the procedure for
determing the elevation and azimuth angle calculation to
geostationary satellites.
b) Obtain the condition for the satellite to be visible and hence derive
the same for the satellite orbiting in the geostationary orbit.
c) Determine the eccentricity of the elliptical orbit of the satellite
whose apogee and perigee from surface of earth are 25000 km and
250 km respectively. Assume earth’s radius as 6370 km.

3.a) Explain clearly about altitude of satellite and give the mechanism
to control the altitude of the satellite.
b) What is station keeping and explain various methods through
which station keeping can be achieved.

4.a) Describe the tracking, telemetry and command facilities of a

satellite communications system.
b) Explain the reliability of a satellite sub system using mean time
between failutes (MTBF). Show how redundancy can be used to
increase the reliability of a sub system.

5.a) Define figure of merit of earth station. Using the basic

transmission theory explain how this figure of merit is used for
designing links in satellite communication.

b) A satellite orbiting at 38000 km transmits signal at 11.7GHz. The

output power of the satellite transmitter is 250 mw fed to an
antenna of directive gain 18.9dB. The earth station antenna being
4m dish with efficiency 60%. Find the G/T ratio of the earth
station of bandwidth 36 MHz is C/N = 40 dB.

6.a) In FDM/FM/FDMA, write the effects of inter modulation.

b) Explain TDMA frame structure and clearly give an account of the
unique word (UW) correlator.
c) Compare CDMA with other multiple access techniques.

7.a) Draw geometry of cassegrain antenna and explain how the gain of
the large antennas of the earth station is optimised.
b) Explain large earth station’s equipment with FDM/FM/FDMA
technology using simplified block diagram. Also, explain low noise
amplifier (LNA) and high power amplifier (HPA) in the above earth
station.

8. Write short notes on:

(a) Longitudinal and inclination changes due to orbital
perturbations.
(b) Transponders
(c) Indoor reception of DBS TV/FM reception.
