Course Description Freshman English I Intensive and Literacy I are incorporated into one class and require special placement. The course is specially designed to engage students in reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities while promoting individual students growth on state and district-approved language arts standards. The class introduces the student to several popular literary genres and informational texts in order to improve the students reading comprehension on the literal and figurative levels. This is done through an in-depth study of language arts course materials as well as the Read 180 and System 44 research-based reading programs. Students also write for a variety of formal and informal purposes. Grammar and usage skills are emphasized to improve academic communication skills. Throughout the course, students practice speaking and listening skills by responding to course material in large and small group settings.
