1. Explain the working of turbine feed system for liquid propellant rocket motor.

Describe the various components used in this system. [16]

2. What do you understand by burning rate of solid propellant? Explain the various

factors affecting the burning rate in a full-scale rocket motor. [16]

1. Sketch a layout of a liquid propellant rocket and show the fuel pump, igniters and

feed lines on it, what is the effect of the injector on the performance of the rocket

engine. [16]

2. Which are the airframe components of a missile; explain the different types of

fore-bodies? [16]

3. (a) Calculate the turn radius and change in the flight path angle for pull up

maneuver of a missile.

(b) What is boost sustain trajectory? How would find range and flight time of

such a trajectory. [8+8]

4. Write the equation for the dynamic longitudinal stability of a missile and by drawing

a sketch, show the induced aerodynamic forces due to pitching motion. [16]

5. Prove that the maximum distance is given by the following equation for a rocket

with vertical flight in friction less air.

6. Define ideal burnout velocity of a rocket. How does it depend upon mass ratio and

7. For an ideal multistage launch vehicle with several stages discuss the effect on the

ideal mission velocity if the 2nd and 3rd stages are not started immediately but

are allowed to coast for a short period after shutoff and separation of prior stage

before staring of next stage. [16]

8. What properties the material of high pressure vessel should posses? Discuss the

suitability of titanium, steel and aluminium alloys for fabricating the motor case of

rockets. [16]

3. (a) What are the various sub systems of a missile? Discuss each of them in brief.

(b) How does a missile differ from a rocket? [8+8]

4. (a) Analyze the longitudinal dynamics of a missile by using two degrees of freedom

model and state how the various aerodynamic derivatives affect the dynamics

of a missile.

(b) Why cruciform missiles are roll stabilized? [12+4]

5. What are the various types of trajectories followed by the missiles; explain the

methods to calculate the Boost-Sustain trajectory. [16]

6. What do you mean by thrust vector control? Explain various methods of thrust

vector control in the liquid propellant rockets? [16]

7. (a) What is rocket dispersion? What are the various factors responsible for it?

Describe the methods for correcting the path of a rocket after dispersion.

(b) A four stage rocket is fired with an initial velocity ‘V’. Find the velocity at

the end of burnout of the rocket and maximum altitude attained. [10+6]

8. What are the factors responsible for heating the structure of rockets and missiles?
