From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! This weekends Gospel reading from Matthew 13 (44-52) concludes the series of stories called the Discourse Parables, which we have been considering for the past several weeks. Each and every one of the more than 30 stories, or parables, that Jesus offers in the Gospels seems to start out innocently enough with an answersomething given or taken for grantedand very quickly turns into a questiona spiritual matter of great significance with which we are challenged to engage and struggle. The trio of mini-parables we are exploring this weekend is no exception. The images of the treasure buried in the field and of the exquisite pearl of great price challenge us to consider the priorities of our spiritual livesand then to go after them with all our heart and soul. What are our real values? Then, put your money where your mouth is, Jesus seems to say. The parable of the net reminds us that we are accountable for the decisions we make about these priorities. I once came across a survey which asked respondents If your house were on fire, what would be the first thing you would grab to save from the flames? (Apart from people and pets, of course). The vast majority of people responded that they would head immediately for the family pictures and photo albums. Not surprising, really: almost everything else, after all can be replaced. But no one can ever replace these important mementos of our personal history and deepest relationships. What are the reminders of our personal history and relationships that comprise our spiritual lives? What, or better yet, who would we look to first for help in a spiritual crisis or fire ? How many of us would answer that hypothetical survey question with the answer, God? Jesus challenges us to grow closer to the Lord, to give priority to our relationship to God. Our Catholic Christian tradition encourages us to cultivate our relationship with God through our encounter with Christ in Scripture, in the sacraments, and in our commitment to the service of our brothers and sisters who are in need. In an especially poignant reference to the growth of our relationship with Christ through our experience of Scripture, Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles writes: We should not read the Gospels as students gathering information, but as

friends who want to know everything about the One we lovewhat He is saying and thinking; how he responds to different situations in his life; his attitudes and feelings. Listening to His words, following in His footsteps, staying with Himwe come to a deeper personal relationship and a deeper love. More and more, we find ourselves thinking with Christs mind and loving with Christs heart.. Now thats a value and a priority worth living for.

Elsewhere in the Parish:

Thanks and Congratulations to all who participated in our first monthly Youth Mass on July 17. It was a great success! Special thanks to Fr. Adrian, Lupe Rios (our Director of Worship) and the members of the Youth Leadership Council: John and Margie Arguello, Byron Leonard, Susan McGuirk, Tala Paulo, Betty Domingo, Valerie Torres, Pat Sheehan and Mauie Pasefika (Chair). Our next Youth Mass is scheduled for Sunday, August 21, starting with Praise & Worship at 4:30 pm and followed by the 5:00 pm Mass. Welcome! Many thanks to all who participated in our terrific 2nd Annual Multicultural Talent Show this past weekend! Special thanks to all of the parishioners who attended and shared so generously of their time, treasure, and of course, talent! Kudos to all who worked so hard on this eventperformers, musicians, cooks (!), and all of our volunteers!!! Thanks, as well, to Friars John Vaughn and Kenan Osborne for their presence among us this week. Both Father John and Father Kenan preached on behalf of the Franciscan Friars Fraternal Care Trust, which provides resources for the support of our students and of our senior friars. Finally, thanks to all the volunteers from MOP (Maintain Our Parish), who cleaned out the area inside the hockey fence and the cargo bins last Saturday. This will enable us to stop using a rented bin and will save the parish a considerable amount of money. Next project: removal of the fence behind the Serra Center. Many thanks to all of our MOPsters!

God bless,

Fr. Chuck

Welcome to Q-PAY
What is Q-PAY you say? This is the path we have chosen to give you the option of on-line giving. Thanks to the hard work of Karen and Malia on our staff it is now available for your use. It is through the same service that we have used for several years for your EFT donations. The company is PCI compliant and the link from our donation page through their system is fully secure. This is a quick and simple way for you to set up a recurring gift or to make a onetime donation. Once you set up your account from our website you can change your level or method of giving and print out your own tax statement at the end of the year. Nothing could be easier. When you make a donation you will receive e-mail verification and the parish will receive the funds deposited within a couple of days. Try Q-PAY the next time that you are traveling and cannot put your regular envelope in the plate. I think youll like it. It is easy, secure and has the promise of aiding our parish in its continuing stewardship efforts.

Todays Realities
Fiscal year 2011-2012 promises to be a challenging year financially within our parish community. In order to bring our expenses and revenue closer in line we have taken a few cost cutting measures. One large item is that we no longer contract out our lawn maintenance. The weekly grass cutting and trimming is now the responsibility of our maintenance staff. Another area is traffic control. Our longtime Nanpor officer, Butch, has been furloughed at least for the summer months. We will revisit this measure in the fall when RE classes resume on Sundays. In these areas we need your assistance. Obviously use caution and patience when coming to and leaving Mass always. It helps to be a little early rather than being a little late. On the other issue of increased responsibilities on the Maintenance Staff, we will need to do better at taking care of our facilities when we use them. We have become too relaxed in areas such as cleaning up when we use a facility such as the McKeon Center or any of our meeting rooms or the parish kitchens. Rooms should be left as they are found. If tables or chairs are moved they should be replaced. All trash needs to be moved to the dumpster behind the Serra Center. A quick clean-up by the user will mean a much quicker straightening by our maintenance team and give them back time for their other duties. Our buildings are aging but that does not mean that they can be abused. The use of the rooms brings responsibility of cleaning and straightening when you are finished. If your group cannot do this then you will not be allowed to reserve the spaces in the future. Thank you for your help in these austere times. Our parish plant belongs to each of us and with that ownership comes responsibility. Allen Hartman, Business Manager

ASSIST WITH A BIBLE

At the Easter Vigil our parish community witnessed over sixty five people receiving the sacraments necessary to complete their full entrance into the Church. One of the key elements of their catechesis is the coming to know the Scriptures, the Word of God, on a weekly basis. During weekly class and again when they gather on Sunday they come to build a relationship with Jesus Christ that they will carry with them for all their lives. For this to take place the RCIA catechumens & candidates are given a Bible at the ceremony marking the beginning of their journey of faith. Our parish faith formation budget is stretched this year trying to cover many, many, needs. Your help will be greatly appreciated if you could help us with providing Bibles to our RICA groups (both English & Spanish). A donation of $20.00, or any amount, would help us in purchasing a Bible for each RCIA catechumen or candidate entering the Church next Easter. If you wish to give, you may make a donation at the Parish Office or Bill Bischoffs office, or drop it into the collection in an envelope marked BIBLES. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, call Bill Bischoff at 760-547-0702.

Isnt it amazing the transformation that can take place on the grounds of our Parish in a single day! The week of July 4th 11th is a perfect example of the creative energy that surrounds Mission San Luis Rey Parish. Thursday, July 7th, marked the beginning of a flurry of activity; many were on hand to begin the enormous task of setting up the environment for Old Mission Montessori Schools largest fundraising event, our 34th year of perfecting this community event that is essential to the schools operation! This longstanding fundraiser has served our community well and continues to provide funds for the operation of the school to help offset tuition costs. Collectively we recognize the true gift that our wonderful parents, grandparents and parishioners provide; a gift that benefits every child who attends our parish school now and into the future. We are indeed grateful and indebted to all for this gift of time, talent and support. Then on Sunday evening many hands and feet went into returning the normal landscape to our school and parish grounds.....what goes up must come down as the saying goes, but unfortunately this is the result of a labor of love instead of gravity! Many, many thanks to everyone especially those who return year after year to add a donation or two, lend a hand or just browse, shop and socialize, but always there in support and ready to offer help if needed! The dust has finally settled from our 34th annual event and God willing we will return next year for our 35th Christmas in July to once again transform the landscape of our parish grounds! With gratitude and blessings, Wanda S. King, Principal

Continuacin

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,
