Taking a vacation from real estate worries.

There's a trend getting attention in the real estate market and Floridians need to stop and take notice. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), vacation home sales are on the rise and getting stronger. In the last year sales of vacation homes rose 4.7% to a record 1.07 million sales. Whether you're shopping around for a place to warm up in the winter, or you're looking to sell one, this upswing in the market is good news in a time of real estate concern. "The average vacation home buyer is looking to hold on to their property for approximately 10 years. That's good news for the growth potential of the property's value and good news for the economy", says Michael Burke of John R. Wood Realtors. So what are the steps in making a wise second home purchase? Experts say the first thing you should do is go on vacation! It's an assignment few would say no to, but Realtors say vacation homebuyers should visit the area they're considering a few times before purchasing a residence. "There's a big difference between visiting and living somewhere. Check out the area, the culture, and the weather and make sure it's something you can live with in the long term", says Burke. "If you find this truly is a 'home away from home', then move forward." Economists say although the average American vacation is getting shorter, travelers are taking more of them throughout the year. It's this more frequent jaunt from home that gives the already rising vacation home market the potential to soar.

Reading between the lines.

If you've read a newspaper or turned on the TV in the last year, there's no ignoring the attention the real estate market is getting. But if you look closely, the news isn't all that bad. Recently gathered figures of home sales in the Bonita Springs and Estero area show 90% of the homes sold in the last year turned a profit. So why is it that the news continues to be so harsh when it comes to home prices and the real estate market? "It's all in how you look at it", says Michael Burke, a Realtor with John R. Wood Realtors. "If you bought your home in the last 12 months, selling right now is probably not the best idea. But if you purchased your home 5 years ago, your chances of turning a profit are very good. Unfortunately that's not something you hear in the news." Analysts across the board say home prices are beginning to stabilize across the country after a surging boom that increased some homes by more than 40% a year. Experts say it's important for sellers and buyers to understand that housing prices aren't dropping, they're returning back to normal. Another piece of good news for both Realtors and home sellers is the number of buyers still interested in Florida. Statistics show the demand for Florida real estate is still high, with more than 30,000 new residents moving to the Sunshine State every year. "Florida remains one of the top destinations for people to relocate to, and that's never changed, even in the current housing market" says Burke. "Buyers are sitting in the wings waiting to feel comfortable about the market again. For some that's right now. For others it may take months or even a year, but the bottom line is they're here. We just need to show them that it's okay to stay."

SHOULD YOU CONSIDER AN HSA

(Health Savings Account)?
This column is produced by the Financial Planning Association, the membership organization for the financial planning community, and is provided by Al Procaccino, a member of FPA and Certified Financial Planner with Castle Financial www.castlefinancial.com . The Tax Relief and Health Care Act of 2006 (TRHCA) that went into effect this year made it a bit easier for both employers and their workers and self-employed to obtain Health Savings Accounts, a kind of IRA for health care expenses. Health savings accounts were created as part of the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 but have not been wildly popular because they're complicated. Anyone under age 65 who buys a qualified highdeductible health plan (HDHP) can open an HSA. However, you can still own an HSA and be covered under other types of insurance policies that cover liability, dental, vision and long-term care needs, as long as the same expenses are not covered by both your HSA and the insurance policy. How do I find a qualified policy? If you're employed, your employer obviously selects a qualified option and makes that available to you. However, for individuals or sole proprietors buying such policies, you need to put in some research to make sure you get the right plan for you. You need to ask if your current insurer has a qualified plan, and there are Web sites you can search for ideas -www.hsainsider.com and www.healthdecisions.org. Will I automatically qualify for the HSA option at my company? No. Under the new law, employers have the right to offer such plans to those who own 5 percent or less of the company or make less than $100,000 a year. However, if you are self-employed, there are no income restrictions. What are the m a x i m u m contributions? In 2007, individuals can deposit up to $2,850 in their HSA, even if the minimum single person deductible of $1,100 is selected. Insured individuals with family coverage can deposit up to $5,650, even if the minimum family deductible of $2,200 is selected. For HSA holders 55 and up, they're allowed to make an extra catch-up deposit each year until the date they enroll in Medicare. In 2007, the maximum allowable catch-up deposit is $800. This catch-up amount will increase to $900 in 2008 and will remain at $1,000 beginning in 2009. How do I get started? The new law allows employees the one-time opportunity to roll over their existing balances in flexible spending accounts or health reimbursement accounts into an HSA. The new rules also allow a one-time opportunity for an individual to transfer in funds equal to the relevant HSA contribution maximum for the year. If I find a policy, should I automatically buy it? No. Since this is a tax issue as well as an insurance issue, it makes sense to discuss this decision with your tax adviser or financial planner. What's the difference between an HSA and a medical flexible spending account (FSA)? One important difference is that HSAs allow balances to be carried forward year-to-year, growing on a tax-free basis as long as they're used for medical expenses. On the other hand, Medical FSAs generally

I can resist everything except temptation.

Fitting Healthy Habits in the Spaces Between Your Day
(ARA) - When it comes to grooming and health routines, last-minute schedule changes can unravel even the best planned tasks. Take it from an expert -- New York City celebrity stylist Rebecca Weinberg -- and find spaces throughout the day to incorporate important, healthy practices. I always tell my clients that rather than wait until the end of the day to take care of their skin, smile and body, they should fit certain important habits in the spaces between their activities, says Weinberg, who won an Emmy for her work on Sex and the City. Weinberg, who sees up to five clients a day, shares a few helpful tips she has learned from her work. Healthy Smile = Beautiful Smile Most people think of their oral care routine as a pre-bedtime at-home activity, but it doesnt have to be: especially flossing, as its easy to carry in your purse or bag. New Glide Whitening Plus Scope Flavor floss is great because it can multi-task as well as you do, providing a burst of instant refreshment and preventing surface stains in between teeth. Do away with your gum and mints, and engage in something thats actually healthy and will improve your gum health! Exercise To-go Take your exercise routine out of the gym. People always feel guilty if they cant make it to the gym on a busy day, but why not incorporate exercise into your everyday routine? Rather than taking the elevator to your office, use the stairs. Or when the weather is nice outside, get off the bus a few stops before your final destination and walk the rest of the way. It will help you unwind before you get home and keep your body in shape. Refresh Your Style The outfit that seemed fun and fresh when you left the house can feel boring by the end of the day when youre getting ready to head out to after-work activities. Flashy accessories are the best way to refresh an outfit between a day at work and a night on the town. Throw on a gold chain necklace and a big cocktail ring and replace the bulky purse with a clutch. Keep Your Energy Levels Up We handle stress poorly and are more susceptible to illness when we fail to make good nutrition a priority. The key is to throw a low-fat, proteinpacked snack -- like a handful of almonds or a low-sugar energy or granola bar -- into your work bag. By keeping healthy snacks within reach, youll be better prepared to handle the day by maintaining energy levels in the spaces between meals. Just by fitting these simple

practices into your schedule will allow you to take advantage of the spaces between and make the most of your day.

FALL INTO FASHION: Hair Tips for the Autumn

(NUI) - As the days cool off and the leaves change their color, fall seems like a perfect time to change your own look as well. But while the cooler days and nights may chill you out, the changes in temperature can also cause problems for your hair. Reworking and revitalizing your 'do can be difficult when you're plagued by frizz and static. For finding that fantastic fall hairdo, celebrity stylist Sarah Potempa offers the following hip hair trends and maintenance tips to keep in mind this season: Renew and revitalize. After having been in the sun all summer, the first thing you should do is breathe new life into your locks with a deep conditioner or leave-in treatment, such as Aussie's 3-minute Miracle smoothing treatment or the Infusium 23 (Repair)ologie Leave-in treatment. Both products restore your hair's manageability and shine, while preventing future damage and smoothing the cuticle layer of your hair. With a healthier texture, your hair will be looking fresh for the fall.

They know when we need a good LAUGH!

Pump up the volume. Due to the cooler air, it's best to dry your hair thoroughly before you head outside. Apply a volumizing foam and leave-in conditioner to the root of your hair before you blow-dry it to create lots of volume and movement. Keep hair soft and shiny. This year's trendy fall hair will consist of soft and shiny waves with lots of body and movement. To get the look, separate your hair into 2-by-2 sections, spritz a conditioning shine spray throughout each piece and then use a two-inch curling iron to curl your hair in a spiral motion away from your face. Fight the frizz. As cool air

comes in and the sweaters come out, your hair can get a lot of static. Apply a drop of no-frizz gel on your brush and comb down the fine hairs along the hairline. Then use a basic toothbrush to tame the flyaways and create a polished look. Pony up to style. Once you've gotten your frizz under control, consider working your hair into a perfect ponytail. Apply hair spray on a flat boar bristle brush, then comb your hair into a smooth ponytail while holding the end of it tight with your free hand. To complete the look, wrap a small section of hair around the ponytail to hide the hair tie.

BEAUTY IN A BLOCK

Save on Energy Costs This Winter

(NUI)- If you're constantly turning up the thermostat this winter because you get chilly in your home, there's a good chance that it's more than just your imagination. The U.S. Department of Energy has found that common air leaks, through places like window and door frames, ducts and electrical outlets, account for 82 percent of energy loss in the average home. Insulation, heating and cooling costs have gone up 400 percent in the last decade. You may think that additional insulation should be the first step in making your home more energy efficient, but it's really stopping air infiltration at the source which allows you to stay warmer at lower thermostat settings, use less fuel and reduce utility bills. Fortunately, air infiltration Foam Sealant, which expands to take the shape and size of a void and forms a permanent, airtight and water-resistant seal that protects homes from the outside elements. If you're having difficulty locating leaks in your home, follow this easy test recommended by the U.S. Department of Energy. First, close all exterior doors, windows and fireplace flues. Turn off all combustion appliances such as gas-burning furnaces and water heaters. Finally, turn on all exhaust fans generally located in the kitchen and bathrooms or use a large window fan to suck the air out of the rooms. This test increases air infiltration through gaps and cracks, making them easier to detect. Don't forget to study the exterior of your home. Inspect all areas where different building materials come together, such as exterior corners and where siding and chimneys meet. Taking the time to plug small air leaks will not only better maintain your indoor temperature, but it will also save you lots of money on heating and cooling costs. For more information, visit www.greatstuff.dow.com. (NUI) - While most people think of concrete masonry as a building block or foundation of a home or building, more and more people are taking note of its aesthetic potential. That's right, concrete masonry, known for its strength and durability, is turning heads with its curb appeal both in the construction of buildings and through landscaping design. Tracey Weber, a Wisconsin homebuilder, used concrete masonry veneer to give his home extra visual appeal. From arches and pillars, to subtle quoins, Weber used concrete masonry to replicate the look of quarried stone. His home not only captured the Old World feel he was seeking, but it also won the 2006 Excellence in Masonry Award primarily for its visual appeal. The design, however, did have its practical side. The exterior is structurally sound and requires very little upkeep. "It's maintenance-free," said Weber. "It makes everything look better, and you don't have to paint it every few years." Concrete masonry has also been spotted in backyards nationwide, a trend that can be attributed to its strength, aesthetic appeal and costeffectiveness. "Concrete masonry landscaping materials have put fantastic outdoor living spaces within the financial reach of regular families," said Skip Coulter, landscape designer. From interlocking pavers that mimic natural stone and can take on various shapes and colors, to elevated patios and retaining walls, concrete masonry can complete your outdoor living space. Additionally, concrete masonry's structural integrity makes it a lasting choice, even in the outdoor elements. "I like the versatility of concrete masonry landscaping," said Chris Exley of Exley's Landscape Service. "Curved lines are more pleasing than the straight lines one gets with conventional decking. The system allows us to be more creative. There are so many textures, colors and patterns to choose from." So, the next time you need to add some flair to your home, don't overlook the potential of concrete masonry.

SEE SPOT GO GREEN

When it comes to natural pet food, pet owners don't seem to hesitate to spend more for "green" peace of mind, but does it really add up to a cleaner environment? According to Dr. Andrew Weil, world-renowned leader and pioneer in the field of integrative medicine, it's all the steps from farm to bowl that determine the credibility and impact your pet food may have on the environment. produce a pet food made without the use of animal by-products, rendered meat or chicken meals, added growth hormones or antibiotics. And second, with a commitment to environmental practices, which involve sourcing their protein exclusively from natural family farms and ranches. The positive impact family farms have on the environment may be more critical than most people realize, but, (ARA) These days, what used to be the most forgotten room in the house is getting a lot of attention. One of the most popular trends in home improvement is to turn the bathroom into a luxurious getaway. But how do you do it? Some people will knock down walls to make their bathroom bigger, and then add such upgrades as a whirlpool custom shower, workout space or separate toilet room. But for those who dont have $30,000 to spend on upgrades, there are some simple, but luxurious things that can be done to change the look and functionality of the room for the better.

Functional Luxury in the Bathroom

People have been adding in-floor heating, heated towel warmers and adjustable shower heads for a while now, but just introduced at the 2007 Kitchen/Bath Industry show in Las Vegas this past May is a high-tech storage option that has the potential to change how people use their bathrooms: Roberns M Series mirrored cabinet with Cold Storage. For homeowners who prize luxury and utility, this cold storage cabinet is soon to be a storage must-have, says Steve Bissell, president of Robern, a company that specializes in bathroom storage solutions that combine stylish designs with innovative features. Half of the 8-inch deep, 20-by-30-inch cabinet is dedicated to cold storage at a refrigerator-like temperature that allows users to extend the life of high-end cosmetics,

maintain the quality of health and wellness products or simply keep beverages chilled and handy. The other half is for toiletries that do not require refrigeration, like toothbrushes, soaps or towels. The cabinet can be installed semi-recessed or surface mounted. It has interior shelves to maximize storage and a handsome mirrored front door with a minimalist style that enables it to complement the other design elements of the vanity or room. Replace Your Homes Biggest Water Waster

(ARA) Ready to make your home more environmentally friendly? If youre planning to join the ranks of those who want to do their part for Planet Earth, the bathroom is a good place to start. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), toilets, showers and faucets combined represent two-thirds of all indoor water use, with toilets being the biggest water guzzler of all. Its a good time to replace older models with the new efficient ones. Here are five things to keep in mind as you shop for a new one: 1. Educate yourself on High Efficiency Toilets (HETs). A HET is defined as a fixture that uses 20 percent less water than the 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) requirement set by the government. Though still voluntary, HETs are becoming a significant part of the marketplace as manufacturers recognize the compelling need for water conservation and water authorities incorporate them into their toilet replacement programs. Youll save the most water with an HET. 2. Consider dual flush technology. A dual-flush toilet offers two different flush volumes: a little flush and a big flush. Popular in Europe and Asia, and even mandated in Australia, dual flush toilets are increasingly recognized for their common sense approach to water conservation as well as their effectiveness. While many manufacturers offer them, none has more than Caroma, the Australian company that invented the technology 25 years ago, with 30 models now available. A family of four can save 13,000 gallons of water per year by using a dual-flush toilet instead of a single flush model installed after 1994, and 52,000 gallons of water compared to the older toilets that still exist in many homes. If every home replaced their single flush toilets with dual flush ones, 3.9 trillion gallons of water per year could be saved. 3. Look for the Water Sense Label. The EPAs new labeling program, called WaterSense, guides consumers to the most water efficient products. Only HETs qualify for WaterSense; and only those certified in independent laboratory testing to meet rigorous criteria for both performance and water efficiency are awarded the label. Caroma now has 29 WaterSense toilets available. 4. Choose an Easy Installation Solution. Select a new toilet that will cover the footprint of your old unit to avoid the need to replace or repair the floor. For example, Caroma models are designed to fit over most other footprints making them an ideal choice for retrofitting as well as saving water. 5. Check for replacement programs. Many local water authorities offer significant rebates, sometimes even free toilets, to customers who trade in their old toilets for more environmentally friendly models. Check your local water authority website. In addition to replacing an older toilet with a newer, more efficient one, other environmentally friendly improvements you can make in the bathroom include switching to a low flow showerhead, which according to the EPA will save 18,250 gallons of water a year; and switching out standard aerators for reduce-flow ones. You should also check your faucets for leaks. Just one drippy faucet can waste up to 13 gallons each day. And you might not even hear it draining your wallet until it's too late. The best way to catch sneaky leaks is to check your water meter. Make sure all the water is off in the house, then look at the meter to make sure the needle isn't moving.

"I think it's especially critical for pet owners to examine the type of protein that goes into their pet's food," said Weil who has two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Jambo and Daisy. "My dogs are a big part of my family, so knowing the protein source of their food is really important to me." Weil's personal concern over the health and well-being of his dogs, combined with his personal passion for the environment, led him to get involved with launching one of the first pet foods with U.S. source-verified meat and poultry. "What impressed me was their attention to detail when it came to knowing the source of their protein and their unique ability to process the pet food in their own manufacturing facilities under strict guidelines," said Weil. Pet Promise was developed with a two-part mission: First, with a promise to pet owners to

unfortunately, many family farmers go out of business every week. Family farms that support the use of sustainable agricultural practices are often replaced by factory farms. Environmental proponents believe that factory farms unnecessarily produce tons of waste that compound pollution problems. "Factory farms are major offenders of the environment today. The amount of residues from antibiotics and hormones that goes into the water tables is significant," said Weil. "By choosing pet foods made with meat and poultry protein sourced from family farms, you are sending a message about these practices, and helping to do something positive for the environment." Pet Promise pet food can be found in stores nationally including Whole Foods, Wild Oats and Petco. For more locations, visit http://www.petpromiseinc.com

(NUI) - If you're part of the working world and also have children, there's a good chance you aren't satisfied with the time that you get to spend with them. Your heart may be in the right place, but hectic schedules can leave little time to stop what you're doing in order to talk to your kids and truly connect with them. According to a recent survey, nearly one in four working dads feels that work is negatively impacting their relationship with their children. If you would like to get more in touch with your own son or daughter, there are easy ways to free up some parent-child bonding time. The following ideas should help ensure that the communication lines between parent and child stay open as often as possible. Share a hobby. (NUI) - With the frantic pace of modern life, many beloved family traditions are falling by the wayside. A recent survey commissioned by the KN Karen Neuburger lifestyle brand found that nearly 46 percent of parents surveyed admit to reading to their children less than their own parents read to them. In today's technologydominated world, it's not surprising that the biggest culprit for the lack of bedtime reading is the television. More than 42 percent of parents are more likely to watch television than to read to their children at bedtime. Additionally, 71 percent of parents say their children commonly watch television the hour before they go to bed. "Parents today are busier than ever," said Lisa Bazinet, vice president of Karen Neuburger, Ltd. "Between working all week and shuffling their kids to various activities, today's families are simply too exhausted for bedtime stories." For a child, the time spent reading with a parent is critical in developing listening, vocabulary and language skills. The following "Books at Bedtime Tips," provided by KN Karen Neuburger, are designed to help you develop a healthy bedtime routine that includes reading at the end of the day:

BID ADIEU TO ACHOO THIS WINTER!

(NUI) - When the weather gets colder, people tend to spend more time indoors. Because of irritants within the home such as dust mites, mold and other allergens, this time of year also sees a sharp rise in the number of reported asthma and allergy problems. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, allergies are the sixth-leading cause of chronic disease in the United States costing the health care system $18 billion annually. Here are some tips you can use this winter to keep your allergy or asthma symptoms at bay: Keep your indoor humidity level below 35 percent to help prevent mold growth. If you do encounter mold, be sure to remove it with a strong disinfectant. Line mattresses, box springs and pillows with dust-proof covers to decrease your exposure to dust mites and other allergens. Moreover, frequently wash bed linens, blankets and comforters in hot water to rid them of dust mites. Avoid keeping plants in bedrooms or rooms where /info) may help you breathe more easily. With all-natural, active ingredients, easy-touse Efficas Care is the first nutritional therapeutic approach that is scientifically shown to help reduce allergy and asthma symptoms such as sinus congestion, sneezing, coughing and shortness of breath. Keep the air inside your home fresh and clean by investing in a quality air purifier and furnace filters to keep pollutants out of the air. If you use a humidifier in your home, clean it weekly with a solution of bleach and water to kill mold. When outdoors, stay away from areas that promote mold growth, especially dark, wooded areas. Cold air can trigger asthma attacks. When outdoors in cold weather, wear a mask or other protection over your face to help you avoid inhaling too much cold air. What's the Best Vitamin for Your Health

(NUI) - Vitamins are essential to our daily health and well being, warding off a host of diseases and conditions and promoting everything from eye health to prenatal wellness. However, with pre-made dinners and busy days, it's not easy to ensure that you and your family are getting the proper nutrition, making it no surprise that more and more Americans are turning toward vitamin supplements. In fact, approximately 85 million Americans take vitamin supplements on a regular basis. In today's market, vitamins come in all shapes, sizes and forms, so how do you choose, especially when it comes to a liquid or tablet vitamin? Absorption: When choosing a nutritional supplement, it's important to consider how well your body will be able to absorb the vitamins. For example, research has shown that liquids absorb at a better rate than vitamins in a tablet form. That's right, liquids are absorbed at a 98 percent rate, while tablets at a 10-20 percent rate. What does this mean? It means that only 1020 percent of the nutritional benefits of your tablet vitamin actually reach and affect your system. This is an especially important consideration for individuals aged 40-60 whose ability to absorb nutrients from foods and vitamins sees a 70 to 90 percent decline. Easy to take: Most adults don't have trouble swallowing pills, but young children and aging adults may face some difficulty. A liquid supplement could be the best solution. Taste: While it may seem trivial, a vitamin, especially in a liquid form, with a bad taste can be a major deterrent. However, products, such as NuVim, a fruit-flavored dietary supplement drink, offers great taste and has NutraFlora, a prebiotic fiber to help the body absorb minerals and vitamins. NuVim also contains 30 percent of your vitamin A requirement and 100 percent of your daily requirements of vitamins C, E, B12 and zinc. NEW DIET OFFERS HOPE FOR PCOS SUFFERERS

(NUI) - Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a disease that affects the lives of approximately one in 10 women, causing both physical and emotional ramifications. One of the most devastating effects of the disease is infertility. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), PCOS is the most common cause of infertility among women. What exactly is PCOS? Women afflicted with PCOS have high levels of androgens or "male hormones," often miss or have irregular periods caused by a lack of progesterone in their system and have a series of small cysts that grow on their ovaries. Symptoms range from increased acne and high blood pressure to irregular bleeding. And, despite first being sufferers are m o r e prone to weight gain and less able to lose this e x c e s s weight with traditional dieting techniques. However, HHS reports that a 10 percent loss in body weight by PCOS sufferers can restore a more normal menstrual cycle. Additionally, Vitaline, a weight control program and clinic, found that a drop in weight of just 21 pounds increased fertility rates among women who suffer from this disease. As a result, many of these women are turning toward metabolic-rate diet programs, such as the specially designed PCOS diet by Vitaline, which, by eating healthy, organic foods, stops hunger and cravings to ensure consistent weight loss. In fact, 171 babies have been born to PCOS mothers on the Vitaline program. "I devised the PCOS plan as I feel passionately about helping women with what is often very much a silent condition. Many women come to us desperate for a baby, and when they call to tell us they are expecting, it's like a member of the family delivering such news," said Norah Lane, Vitaline's managing director and founder of the PCOS diet. "We want to help as many women as we can to help themselves -; whether that be to relieve their symptoms or to help them improve their fertility." For more information, visit www.pcos-vitaline.com.

recognized as a condition in 1845, the cause, and, therefore, the cure are still elusive. In the past, many doctors have prescribed hormone-based therapies to help manage the condition and its symptoms, however, more recently, lifestyle changes are taking center stage as a diseasemanagement solution for PCOS sufferers. Weight loss and management is among these solutions. With lower-than-average metabolic rates, PCOS

COLLEGES ADOPT VIRGINIA TECH SAFETY MEASURES

(NUI) -In the months following the tragedy, colleges across the country have been adopting comprehensive security plans that aim to protect students and faculty from events similar to the Virginia Tech shootings last April. The Security Infrastructure Group, hired by Virginia Tech to perform an internal review and determine new ways of alerting students in case of future emergencies, highly recommended that schools use several different methods to increase physical and emotional security among residents on campus. Since the review, many schools have begun installing and testing sirens and alarm systems with high decibel levels high enough to alert even those in the most remote corners of a school's campus. Additionally, the Infrastructure Group also mandated the use of internal Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, which would let students and faculty transmit voice conversations over a campuswide intranet, helping alert those not aware of possible threats to safety but who were near any campus computer. One of the key

Acting on the Future of Science and Technology

(NUI) - All parents are faced with the frightening possibility that their infant could stop breathing during the night a common result of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). According to the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 7 percent of infants in the United States die yearly from SIDS. But the future may hold a different outcome for parents, thanks to a new invention, still in the prototype stages, by students at the University of Idaho who have invented the Sleep Sound an embedded indicator in an infant's sleepwear that triggers an alarm should the child stop breathing. Innovations such as the Sleep Sound are being made possible everyday by scientists and engineers. However, lack of proper technology and funding have threatened to curb the growth of this industry, leading to the adoption of a new act by the federal government and applauded by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a non-profit professional organization promoting the art, science and practice of engineering and allied sciences. recommendations made to ensure security on college campuses was to utilize hightech messaging and communication systems that can warn thousands with the simple click of a mouse. One such system is TechRadium's patented Immediate Response Information System, or IRIS. IRIS sends messages through multiple communication devices including landline telephones, cell phones, e-mail, pagers and PDAs. The system can communicate to people in more than 10 languages, so successful contact is virtually guaranteed. "Immediate response notification systems are faster,

more effective and much more cost-efficient than manual systems," said John Rodkey, spokesperson for TechRadium. "$2 to $3 annually is a small price to pay to save students lives." As more colleges and universities nationwide sign up for emergency services like IRIS, it's clear that the numberone priority for every school is making sure that each and every individual attending school doesn't have to look over their shoulder on campus be it a student body of 5,000 or 50,000. Hit the Pavement and Take the Ultimate Road Trip
(NUI) - Nothing is more exhilarating than packing your bags and heading out on a care-free road trip that is sure to be an experience you will remember forever. What better way to take your mind off of the daily grind than by hitting the 3.9 million miles of open road in the United States or even heading across the pond? The following road trip ideas should put you in the mood for a one-of-a-kind driving adventure. Hop on the Hana Highway. Much of Maui, Hawaii, is a 24-hour tourist trap. But if you know where to look, the area offers a beautiful experience that's devoid of picturesnapping sightseers. The area's 52mile Hana Highway is the easy ticket for taking in clear blue ocean views and acres of undeveloped rainforest. Take a secondary road to Hoomanu Bay, where you can take a deserted dip in your own personal swimming hole and bask in complete relaxation. Head overseas to grab your keys. A far cry from your average trip to the beach, the European Delivery Program, offered by MercedesBenz, gives car buyers the opportunity to combine the excitement of driving a new Mercedes from the factory in Sindelfingen, Germany, with an unforgettable European vacation all in the same week. Additionally, the company's distinct program provides the chance to explore countries like Austria and Switzerland, dine on authentic European food and drive a Mercedes on the most famous highway in the world, the Autobahn, with many of the expenses paid for by the program. For more information, visit www.mbusa.com. Put the pedal to the metal in the desert. Feel like you've jumped into a scene from "Lawrence of Arabia" when you visit one of the driest and hottest areas in the United States Death Valley, Calif. With your air conditioning pumping, drive through the picturesque Eureka Dunes, and make a point to stop at Badwater Basin, an area of salt flats that sits at 282 feet below sea level and holds the title of lowest point in North America. So, whether you're looking to stay close to home or heading on an international adventure, you can experience an ultimate road trip by making a list of points of interest in the area you want to visit and using city and state Web sites for ideas. Then, pack your bags, grab your map and head out onto the open road.
