Weak Dollar To Boost U.S. Housing

In a time when Floridians are thinking twice about buying property, Europeans and Canadians are ignoring the hype, and shelling out the cash. All across Western Europe the mantra is to 'go west'. From the U.K. to Holland to Spain, Europeans are now the major players when it comes to purchasing second homes, vacation rentals, and investment properties. "The United States is a very attractive buy to Europeans," says Michael Burke, a Realtor with John R. Wood Realty, "We have something unique to offer they can't find overseas" and he's not just talking about our weather. According to the National Association of Realtors foreign real estate investment in the U.S. increased 8.5% from 2004 to 2005 rising to $1.87 trillion, a national record. Although our beautiful beaches and warm climate is a major draw to foreign buyers, it's our weak dollar that has them crossing the Atlantic in search of a home. "The pound is at its highest point in 27 years and the Euro is strong against the dollar, the homes in Florida are considered affordable to Europeans", says Burke. To many foreigners, the United States has become the ideal vacation destination and eventually retirement home. And when you compare the numbers, you can see why. In London a modest single-family home costs about $600,000. A similar home would go for a third of that price in Naples. In addition to our 'bargain priced' homes, realtors say Europeans love the lifestyle and attitude only found on the coast. "What's interesting is that the weak dollar is now bringing new buyers into the housing market and what that's doing is introducing demand to actually balance out the supply," says Burke. "Foreign national buyers are introducing demand and it's helping the markets keep a sense of calm." International real estate remains in high gear and seems to be one of the only facets in real estate to come away from the housing crash unscathed. "Demand is five to ten times higher than it was at this time last year. As real estate prices are increasing abroad, many folks are getting priced out of their own neighborhoods and see the U.S. as an attractive diversification of their overall real estate portfolio", Burke explained. International home sales in Florida have increased steadily over the past 5 years, and continue to climb. The most recent statistics available from 2005 show more than 82,000 homes were sold to international homebuyers in Florida. So what about U.S. investors who don't have a strong currency advantage to boost their investments? Advice from analysts about when to get back into the housing market ranges from right away to five years down the line. "There is no doubt that this is a buyer's market, but when exactly the bottom will be reached is the subject of debate" says Burke. "The recession in the housing market has gone on longer than anyone anticipated, and the uncertainty has caused many investors to be nervous. However don't forget the bottom line is that long term, real estate has always been a terrific investment for homeowners.

The recent volatility in the stock market has everyone a little jumpy - even folks who have worked with a trusted financial planner for years. But if you've never worked with a planner before, one of the first things he or she will do is make you fill out a risk analysis questionnaire. Why is risk analysis important before you make decisions with your money? Risk tolerance is an important part of investing - everyone knows that. But the real value of answering a lot of questions about your risk tolerance is to tell you what you don't know how the sources of your money, the way you made it, how outside forces have shaped your view of it and how you're handling it now will inform every decision you make about it in the future. The most important thing a risk questionnaire can tell is what's important about money to you. Trained financial advisers can determine your money personality through a process of questioning discovery. Planners can then guide investors within their money personality. Do you want certainty, are you willing to take a little risk or let it roll because "you can always make more of it?" A financial planner tries to see through the static to find out what you really need to create a solid financial life. But it might make sense to ask yourself a few questions before you and your planner sit down: 1. What's important about money? 2. What do I do with my money? 3. If money was absolutely not an issue, what would I do with my life? 4. Has the way I've made my money - through work, marriage or inheritance affected the way I think about it in a particular way? 5. How much debt do I have and how do I feel about it? 6. Am I more concerned about maintaining the value of my initial investment or making a profit from it? 7. Am I willing to give up that stability for the chance at long-term growth? 8. What am I most likely to enjoy spending money on? 9. How would I feel if the value of my investment dropped for several months? 10. How would I feel if the value of my investment dropped for several years? 11. If I had to list three things I really wanted to do with my money, what would they be? 12. What does retirement mean to me? Does it mean quitting work entirely and doing whatever I want to do or working in a new career full- or part-time? 13. Do I want kids? Do I understand the financial commitment? 14. If I have kids, do I expect them to pay their own way through college or will I pay all or part of it? What kind of shape am I in to afford their college education? 15. How's my health and my health insurance coverage? 16. What kind of physical and financial shape are my parents in? One of the toughest aspects of getting a financial plan going is recognizing how your personal style, mindset, and life situation might affect your investment decisions. Honey and Spice Glazed Turkey

1. Prepare turkey as per package directions. 2. Mix chili powder, garlic powder, allspice, cumin, salt, red pepper, honey and water in small bowl until well blended; set aside. 3. About 45 minutes before the turkey is done brush with honey spice mixture. Place foil loosely over turkey and cook until meat thermometer reaches 180F in the deepest part of the thigh. 4. Let turkey stand for 15 minutes before carving.

Brandied Prime Rib Roast Beef

1 1/2 tsp 1 tbsp 1 1/2 lbs 3/4 cup 1/4 cup 2 tbsp 1 pkg Cracked Pepper Dijon Mustard Prime Rib, Rib or Sirloin Premium Oven Roast Water Milk Brandy Gravy Mix

Preheat oven to 325F. Mix together the pepper and mustard. Brush mixture on all sides of the roast. Place the beef in a small roasting pan or metal baking dish and roast until desired temperature is reached (140F for rare or 160F for medium) about 20 to 25 minutes per pound. Remove the roast from the oven and tent with foil. Stir the water, milk, brandy and sauce mix into the juices in the roasting pan. Bring to boil over medium-high heat, whisking constantly. Reduce the heat and simmer 1 minute. Serve brandy gravy over sliced roast beef.

Chocolate Yule Log

8-10 servings Filling: Ganache: 1 pkg Angel Food Cake Mix Icing Sugar 3/4 cup chocolate chips 8oz cream cheese 2 cups icing sugar 3/4 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup 3 tbsp 2 tsp 1 cup Cocoa, sifted hot coffee vanilla chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350F. Grease a 17" x 14" jelly roll pan. Line with parchment paper and grease again. Combine Angel Food Cake Mix and cocoa in large bowl of electric mixer. Prepare according to package directions. Spread batter into prepared jelly roll pan. Bake in preheated oven 18-20 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then invert on to clean tea towel, which has been sprinkled with icing sugar. Remove pan and waxed paper and roll cake in tea towel. Cool rolled cake thoroughly. Meanwhile, combine chocolate chips and coffee in microwave safe bowl. Microwave on medium power, 2-3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds, until melted. Cool to room

temperature. Beat cream cheese, vanilla and icing sugar in food processor bowl, until just mixed. Do not over process. Add cooled chocolate mixture and pulse to combine. Unroll cooled cake and spread with chocolate cream cheese filling. Re-roll cake and place on serving dish. Chill while preparing ganache. Ganache: In a medium sized saucepan, bring whipping cream to a boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add chocolate chips. Mix to incorporate. Cover pan and let sit 10 minutes. Remove cover and let cool until spreadable consistency is achieved. Spread over chilled cake and decorate with tines of a fork for "bark".

Make a Connection With Your Teen

(NUI) - Talking with teenagers about their health isn't always a parent's or a teen's favorite conversation. But parents have more influence on their teen's health than they think, according to researchers with the Prevention Research Centers (PRC) network. "While some adolescents are very skillful in convincing us that we are no longer pertinent in their lives, we make the mistake of believing that," says Michael Resnick, Ph.D., an adolescent health researcher and director of the PRC at the University of Minnesota. "The research definitely contradicts that cultural stereotype." Dr. Resnick has found that teenagers who feel they can talk to parents and other caring, competent adults are more likely than other teens to be protected from suicide, eating disorders, emotional distress, risky sexual behaviors and substance abuse. Despite some appearances, most teens say they do want close relationships with their parents and care what they think. "The parents sort of set the patterns," said Kristina Ann Jareno, 16, a high-school senior in Long Beach, Calif., who belongs to the youth advisory board of the PRC at the University of California at Los Angeles/RAND. She says she sees parents making decisions about nutrition and physical activity that affect her friends, such as choosing whether to emphasize sports, to drive children to activities and to purchase healthy foods. Although friends, older siblings and older cousins are role models, Jareno said her parents are the reason she studies hard in school and stays away from negative peer pressure. "My parents are the most influential people in my life," she said. Mark Schuster, M.D., Ph.D., director of the UCLA/RAND PRC, provides the following tips to help parents discuss topics such as fitness, nutrition, sex and substance use with teens: Start talking about health when children are young, and keep the lines of communication open. Never tell a child he or she is too young to ask a question, but use ageappropriate answers. Instead of criticizing a teen all the time, notice your child doing something good, and offer a compliment. Ask questions that can open a conversation, such as "What do you think about that?" and "What's on your mind?" Let your teen know why you want to have the conversation with phrases like "I want to understand the things you're going through," and "There is a lot of misinformation out there." Listen without interrupting or jumping in with advice. Rephrase what your child says to be sure you understand what your child means, and let him or her know you are listening. Help your children learn to make decisions on their own. Let them come up with options for solutions, go through the options with them, and have them pick one that seems best.

Then you can chime in with your thoughts. Teach your children assertiveness skills that will help them avoid unhealthy behaviors. Never underestimate a parent's power of example. STAVING OFF 'SUPERBUGS'

(NUI) - While it has long been a problem in hospitals nationwide, Staphylococcus, commonly known as a staph infection, has become a threatening issue in another frequented location the hallways of schools. Several high schools in the Washington, D.C. area recently reported multiple cases of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA), a strain of staph that is considered a "superbug" and extremely drug-resistant. The alarming incidents have had many parents and concerned community members wondering how to keep future occurrences of staph from becoming a daily concern. "Keeping our children and teachers safe from contagious bacteria like staph is highly important especially with the news of outbreaks across the country," said Dr. Claus Wagner-Bartak, president of Red Reef Laboratories. "Our family of BioClear products has been specifically designed to combat harmful bacteria like staph in a non-toxic, biodegradable manner." Staph bacteria is commonly spread through close contact and by indirectly touching infected clothing. When you are around someone who has a staph infection, there are additional steps that can be taken to avoid spreading the infection to family and friends: Clean surfaces daily with a safe and effective disinfectant such as Red Reef's family of BioClear products, which also help

Use a solution of one tablespoon of bleach mixed with one quart of water to disinfect all non-disposable items that may have come in contact with the infected area, wound drainage or soiled supplies. Developed by CISCRP in collaboration with Fast Search & Transfer, a prominent searchtechnology developer, and ePharmaSolutions, a renowned clinical services provider, the free site helps users find clinical research information quickly and easily. With patient recruitment being one of the biggest barriers to the timely completion of clinical trials, SCT helps bridge the gap between volunteers and the clinical research process. "SCT's centralized database gives users the tools they need to learn about clinical research and its role in the health of their family, their community and themselves," said CISCRP President and CEO Diane Simmons. "It is our hope that SCT will help visitors cut through the clutter of information about clinical research and find what they need to make informed decisions about clinical research participation." SCT users also will find easyto-use features that help narrow the search for clinical trials by disease type and geographic location and provide information about trial sponsors, phases, recruitment status and eligibility requirements. Online links to current medical news, plus a list of questions to ask before volunteering, take users through the first steps of starting the clinical trial search. "We believe SCT gives users a valuable tool for making informed decisions about clinical research," Simmons said. "CISCRP is delighted to make it available to the thousands of people who search the Internet everyday for news and information about clinical trials and clinical research participation."

Pork Souvlaki
Boneless Pork Shoulder cut in 1 inch cubes Olive Oil Lemon Juice Garlic, crushed Dried Rosemary Dried Parsley Salt Cooked Rice or Pita Pockets Tzatziki Sauce

Place pork cubes in plastic bag. Combine remaining ingredients; add to plastic bag. Toss to coat; seal bag and set in bowl. Marinate pork cubes for 30 minutes at room temperature or longer in refrigerator, turning occasionally. Thread pork onto skewers or spread on foil lined oven-proof tray. Broil or grill meat over medium heat for 6 minutes, turning to cook all sides. Serve on rice or in a pita pocket with tzatziki sauce and a Greek salad.

Easy Orange Shrimp Fried Rice

4 servings 3/4 lb 1 tbsp 1 small 3 tbsp 1 tsp 1 can Deveined Shrimp, frozen, cooked and peeled Vegetable Oil Red Pepper, sliced Frozen Orange Juice Concentrate, thawed Minced Ginger Mandarin Orange Segments, drained 2 cups 1 cup 1/4 cup 1 tbsp 1 clove 1/2 cup Instant White Rice Sugar Snap Peas Reduced Soy Sauce, lite or sodium Honey Garlic, minced Green Onion, chopped

1. Prepare Instant White Rice according to package directions. Fluff with a fork and reserve. Run cool running water over the shrimp until thawed; drain well. 2. Heat the oil in a nonstick wok set over medium-high heat. Add the snap peas and red pepper. Stir-fry for 5 minutes or until tender and lightly browned. Stir in the soy sauce, orange juice concentrate, honey, ginger and garlic. Cook for 1 minute or until sauce has slightly thickened. 3. Stir the cooked rice, shrimp, orange segments and green onion into the sauce. Cook, tossing, until rice and shrimp are heated through and coated in sauce. Tip: Use up leftovers: stir 1-1/2 cups sliced, cooked chicken, steak or pork into the stir-fry instead of the cooked shrimp.

Molasses Fruitcake
1 pkg. 1 pkg. 1 cup 1/4 cup 1/2 cup 4 2 cups 2 cups 2 cups 2 cups (2 layer) Spice Cake Mix Instant Lemon Pudding Mix Orange Juice Fancy Molasses Vegetable Oil Large Eggs Cherries, chopped Dates, chopped Nuts, chopped Raisins

Glaze (optional): 1 cup Icing Sugar 2-3 tbsp. Orange Juice

Preheat oven to 350F. Combine cake mix and pudding mix in a large bowl. Add orange juice, molasses and vegetable oil and beat together for about 2 minutes until batter is smooth. Add 4 eggs, one by one, mixing between each addition. Fold in the fruit and nuts then pour batter into 3 loaf pans (4" x 8"), lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350F for 50 to 55 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pan. Combine icing sugar and orange juice to make glaze and add glaze to warm fruitcake if desired. For best flavor, wrap and store in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

That they live as if they will never die, and die as though they had never lived. God's hand took mine and we were silent for a while. And then I asked...As a parent, what are some of life's lessons you want your children to learn? To learn they cannot make anyone love them. All they can do is let themselves be loved. To learn that it is not good to compare themselves to others." To learn to forgive by practicing forgiveness. To learn that it only takes a few seconds to open profound wounds in those they love, and it can take many years to heal them. To learn that a rich person is not one who has the most, but is one who needs the least. To learn that there are people who love them dearly, but simply have not yet learned how to express or show their feelings. To learn that two people can look at the same thing and see it differently.
