Amendment 1 to Boost Florida Housing Market

Optimism in the real estate market is growing, especially in Southwest Florida. Experts are pointing to Florida's new property tax amendment as a boost to both the state's housing market and economy. On Election Day, February 5, 2008, Florida voters approved Amendment 1. This amendment provides property tax relief for primary homeowners by doubling the existing homestead exemption from $25,000 to $50,000. Economists say the new portability provision - which lets homeowners take their Save Our Homes tax benefit with them when they move should encourage some people to either build a new home or purchase an existing home that is on the market. According to Gerald Stone of the Associated Press, Amendment 1 is unlikely to be the last word on property tax relief in Florida, however. Gov. Charlie Crist, who led the campaign to pass the proposed state constitutional amendment, said it's just one step in a process he compared to a football game. "This is the second play," said Crist, a former high school quarterback. "We've got to keep driving down the field to get into the end zone for our people. This is just the start." A day after Florida voters "Now, homeowners with fixed incomes who would like to move, or those simply desiring a move within the state will have an easier time doing so." The amendment also prevents assessments on nonhomesteaded property from rising more than 10 percent a year. Real estate agents overwhelmingly supported the new law and may be the most optimistic, saying they expect the amendment to greatly benefit the housing market, which will rev up the state's economy. "In just the short time since Amendment 1 passed, we've already seen an increase in interest from buyers in Southwest Florida", says Burke. "People are getting excited about the state's effort to help turn around the current market." Real estate agents have reported that many people have held off on moving because, until now, they feared their property taxes would balloon as a result of their loss of the Save Our Homes benefit. Couple the amendment with the current interest rate cuts, and suddenly "time to buy" rang true for many interested homeowners. "It's going to allow them to buy a little bit more home than they could previously afford. Also, I expect it will stimulate our area's economy," says Burke

COUPLEPRENEURS: STARTING A BUSINESS WITH YOUR BETTER HALF CAN REAP HUGE REWARDS - AND UNIQUE PROBLEMS
This column is produced by the Financial Planning Association and provided by Al Procaccino, a member of FPA and Certified Financial Planner with Castle Financial www.castlefinancial.com . It's a familiar scene: A couple comes home after a long day at their respective workplaces. They spend their takeout dinner recapping the day and how much they hate their jobs. In a brainstorm, they decide to start a business where they'll be able to determine every step of their future from now on. For many couples, this major decision is the ticket to wealth, self-determination and happiness. For others, it can lead to severe financial and relationship stress. Such a move takes more than planning - it requires a full assessment of your personalities and your money issues to determine whether working and living side-by-side is right for you. A good start is a visit to a trusted financial adviser. Here are some key steps to consider: Give yourselves a timetable to startup: You might be tempted to give notice tomorrow morning, but it's much wiser to lay out a timetable over the coming months with specific components. Study the viability of your business model: Talk about worst-case scenarios. Bring in some trusted advisers to ask tough questions of what you're planning to do and the viability of your idea. Convincing each other you'll make it work isn't enough. You need to understand the marketplace you're walking into and the roles each of you will fill in its success. Most of all be realistic about your workload and when you can get breaks. Understand how your tax situation will change: Depending upon which business structure you choose and you should get tax and legal advice on this before you start -you will need to plan for income tax and self-employment tax and payroll taxes, if applicable. Payroll tax requirements are more stringent than income taxes. Set a budget for your business and personal life: A planner can help you establish a budget for supporting your business as well as your life at home that will make cash flow more predictable. Conserving cash is critical in the startup phase of any business so critical long-term goals can be met. Couples need an emergency fund of six months to a year of expenses since successful businesses take months or years to turn a real profit. And if the two of you haven't revised your estate plan to accommodate the business, it's time to make that plan now. Plan for your kids in the business: There may be very costeffective ways to employ children in the business for work commensurate with their skills. Get your insurance in order: Before you leave your current employer, figure out the cost of insurance you'll need to take on for the entire family if you take on health, life, home, business, disability and if you're over 50, long-term care coverage. These expenses may be enough to encourage one of you to stay at your old job at least for a while to keep those benefits going while the other devotes more time to the startup. Set targets: Talk through critical milestones of the business - both good and bad. Do a proper business plan with income and cash projections. Decide what factors would lead to expansion or closing your doors. Talk about an exit plan if you break up: It may be hard to imagine now, but a breakup of your relationship with no financial plan for the business can be devastating. Whether you're married or living together, a successful business is an important source of wealth, and you need to plan for the day one side of the relationship wants out and potentially wants to buy the business or be bought out. If one spouse put more capital into the business than the other, provisions should be made to safeguard that investment. Write it down: Documents and legal covenants are important - make sure you have the right ones in place.

Those have a short Lent, who owe money to be paid at Easter.

Online Networking Helps Power Small Business
(NUI) If you are an aspiring or current entrepreneur, you know how daunting running a business can be. However, in today's digital age, one of the most powerful tools to help ensure success the ability to network and share information with peers and experts is now available with just a few clicks of a mouse. "In today's highly competitive, small-business market, getting advice from others who have had similar business experiences is important when trying to achieve your own success," said Gene Marks, president of The Marks Group and best-selling small business author. It's for this reason that online communities aimed specifically at small-business owners have started to become a secret weapon utilized by many eager entrepreneurs. Within Bank of America's Small Business Online Community, for instance, users can network, share, learn and exchange business ideas for free, in real time. Users have access to forums on a number of topics where they can get quick responses to questions or problems they're facing, as well as articles from experts and a stories section where users can read personalized accounts profiling real-life challenges other small-business owners have overcome, including tips for others who may be facing similar challenges. Registered users have searchable member profiles to facilitate better networking. Online communities have fast become a growing trend in today's business world due to the growing interest that smallbusiness owners have in connecting with experts and peers alike. Bank of America's site is entirely user-driven, and its content will evolve based on the needs of the users registered with the site. Online communities are a valuable resource for finding new customers, business partners and even investors. Bank of America's primary goal with its online community is to help establish a better understanding of, and relevance to, small-business owners by helping them overcome their challenges and grow their businesses, rather than selling third-party or Bank of America products.

Trouble Could Be Afoot From Ill-Fitting Shoes
(NUI) - If winter is one of the harshest seasons, summer can be just as unkind-at least to our feet. And with warmer weather just around the corner, most consumers will be turning in their Ugg boots and galoshes for flip-flops and sandals. However, experts warn that while those sassy summer sandals may be simple to slip on and easy on the pocketbook, they also come with their own inherent problems. "Flip-flops offer little in terms of arch support, foot protection and shock absorption. Tendonitis, arch pain and sprained ankles are just some of the problems flipflops can cause," said Dr. Christian Robertozzi, president of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). In fact, most industry experts agree that flip-flops and sandals were never meant to be worn as everyday shoes, but instead were meant to be worn from the locker room to the pool or in the shower. However, if you can't bear the thought of foregoing those sassy, strappy sandals, APMA offers this advice that can provide some tender loving care for your tootsies, while still showing off your toes: Consider whether the shoes are made for walking. Flats and slides shouldn't be worn for long periods of time or when walking long distances. Instead, select a sole that doesn't bend or twist excessively, to avoid arch and heel pain. Choose the source of material carefully. Flipflops and sandals that are made of natural material, such as soft, supple leather, will prevent calluses and dead skin buildup around the heels. Watch the height. Most fashion magazines tout minimum 2-inch heels as a way of lengthening the leg and looking slimmer. However, anything higher changes the way the foot functions and causes the foot to wobble. Rather, look for sandals with lower, wider heels and a stable sole to offer greater support and balance, reducing pressure on the toes and ball of the foot. Don't forget the lotion. It's easy to forget to apply sunscreen to your feet and ankles, but doing so will ensure sunburn. In addition, reapply after getting out of the water. Wear shoes specific to the activity. Although the high wedges may look fabulous, they are of little help in a volleyball game or Frisbee tournament. To avoid toe and ankle injuries, wear appropriate footwear. For more information, visit www.apma.org.

Stick it Where the Sun Shines:

EASY TIPS TO HEALTHY SKIN
Although most people know that sunscreen is an essential part of sun safety, many do not know how much sunscreen is necessary or how frequently it should be reapplied. It's important to apply at least one ounce of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Look for facial and body moisturizers containing SPF 15 or higher. Be sure to reapply every two hours, and look for a broad spectrum sunscreen with ingredients including zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, mexoryl or avobenzone. Tip Two: Wear Sun-Protective Clothing. Research shows that clothing may be the most effective way to protect against skin cancer while in the sun. Like sunscreen, apparel can be rated for its sun-protective ability. This rating for clothing is called "ultraviolet protection factor," or UPF. When shopping for s p e c i a l l y formulated sunSun exposure is the main cause of skin damage including premature aging and skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Protecting your skin on a daily basis from ultraviolet rays doesn't have to be difficult and can avert future skin damage. Keep in mind a few tips that will help to protect your skin while you are enjoying the sun. Tip One: Use a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher every day. protective clothing, look for tightly woven products that feature a minimum UPF 30 and have received the Skin Cancer Foundation Seal of Recommendation. Columbia Sportswear is the first global company to receive this coveted seal, for its OmniShade apparel line. Offering more than 140 UPF-rated products for men, women and children, the products ensure safe and effective protection against damaging UVA and UVB rays. Tip Three: Keep a hat and UVblocking sunglasses on hand. While sunscreen and sunprotective apparel are key to sun safety, it's also important to pay special attention to delicate areas like the neck, ears, scalp, face and eyes. Make sun protection easy by keeping UV-blocking sunglasses and a hat on hand. Columbia Sportswear's Duck Key Booney hat features UPF 50 and is perfect for the beach, fishing, or a day hike. Your Home & Garden

tips, news and advice for homeowners

Spruce Up for Spring

(NUI) - When colder weather waves goodbye and the warm rays of spring begin entering your home, you may use your newfound energy to give your house a much-needed spring cleaning. But getting down and dirty with the rooms in your home can be overwhelming if you don't have the right tools for the job. Taking the time to get organized when spring arrives can make all the difference and make cleaning even the most dauntingly dirty corner a breeze. You don't have to spend a fortune to stock up on necessary supplies either. You'll save both time and money by getting all of your cleaning supplies at discount stores such as Dollar General, which carries many must-have items for the springcleaning season. The following items will help you scrub, sweep and sanitize your way to a clean, fresh home for the rest of the year: The basics. Make sure you have at least one of each of the following: a mop, a broom, a bucket, a scrubbing brush, a sponge and paper towels. For areas such as the bathroom, keep bleach, toilet bowl cleaner, floor cleaner and wax on hand. Plastic storage containers. Make this spring the season to get organized. Plastic storage containers are available in a variety of sizes and are perfect for storing items big and small. Laundry items. Don't forget to get caught up on your laundry while spring cleaning. Detergent, spot-treatment and fabric softener are must-have laundry items. Laundry baskets. Give each family member a laundry basket. Have them go through their closet, pulling out clothes that no longer fit or that they no longer wear. Donate the clothing to a local charity. You'll feel good about giving and also enjoy the newfound closet space. Trash bags. Stock up on trash bags so you can easily dispose of all the trash created during your cleaning projects. Air fresheners and candles. Keep the air in your home smelling clean and fresh yearround with a lightly scented air freshener or candle set.

A Simple Alternative to Make Your Home Energy Efficient

(NUI) - "Going green" is a phrase that is becoming more prevalent everyday. The push to save the environment keeps getting stronger, and yet our efforts do not reflect the urgency. The high up-front costs of eco-friendly products or converting an old home to a green home have slowed the progress toward a more energyefficient environment. But what few people fail to realize is the monetary savings over an extended period. There are many ways to look at reducing your energy consumption. These can range from replacing your windows or heating system with the latest in high- efficiency designed systems or to building up the insulation in your home. However, all of these ideas are expensive, and the payback could take a long time. Even though many of these eco-friendly innovations may seem costly and cumbersome, it can also be as simple as changing your shades. An inexpensive alternative, energy-efficient EcoSmart insulating shades can literally pay for themselves in as few as five years, depending on where you live. These shades are compact, attractive and available in a range of colors and light filtering (for most applications) or room darkening (for bedrooms or home theaters). They also stay clean and are easy to maintain while blocking out virtually all damaging and harmful ultraviolet rays. However, the best news is that according to data from a model developed by Berkeley Labs, in as few as five years the shades can pay for themselves in energy savings and can start putting money back in your pocket while making your home much more comfortable. The study covers a large number of cities in the U.S. An example of the study's results indicate that in Portland, Maine, a 54- inch-by-66-inch EcoSmart light- filtering shade would save approximately $412 over 10 years. That shade costs the homeowner less than $200, so in about five years the shade will have paid for itself and started putting money back in the homeowner's pocket. To get more information on this study, or to find out what the savings are in your market, go to www.EcoSmartInsulating Shades.com and request a copy of the study.

Don't Let Moles, Voles and Grubs Ruin Your Yard

Would You Spend the Entire Day Without Brushing Your Teeth?
THEN WHY DO WE LET OUR PETS?
(NC) - Brushing our teeth is a daily part of our routine and most people would never fathom leaving home without doing so, yet many pet owners don't think about the same care for their cats or dogs. Despite the fact we aren't covered in fur, we are more similar to our four legged friends than many would think! What we have suspected for many years about the connection between good oral care and overall health in humans is now emerging in pets. This makes dental care in our pets more important than ever. recognize this correlation between dental disease and other health issues their pets may be suffering. Greater understanding of this systemic connection in our pets is imperative because gingivitis can lead to more serious problems that can affect the liver and kidneys. Maintaining your pets oral and overall health doesn't have to be difficult however, and there are some easy ways to ensure your pet's smile is in top shape. Regular visits to the vet and daily brushing will keep teeth healthy and the rest (ARA) - As surely as spring will soon arrive, so will the critters that drive you crazy moles and voles. Make this the year you send them packing before they can cause damage in your yard. First, an attack plan for dealing with voles. They are herbivores that if left unchecked will attack flower bulbs and eat the roots from underneath garden plants. Stopping voles can be accomplished simply by placing a six-inch deep perimeter of sharp rocks around your garden or other plantings. They dont have the clawing power to burrow through rocks,

so if a barrier exists, voles will go elsewhere. Dealing with moles, on the other hand, will take a lot more effort. Through the years, homeowners have tried everything from throwing balls of pre-chewed gum into mole tunnels to thrusting sharp pronged pitchforks into mole tunnels, to no avail. Want to get rid of them once and for all? Try a twopronged approach. First apply non-toxic Holy Moley, a granular product from St. Gabriel Organics, to your lawn with a fertilizer spreader to drive the moles away. Since you dont want to leave anything to chance, destroy their favorite food source too. Moles snack on earthworms, and other underground insects like beetle grubs, but they are attracted to grubs more then anything else. A survey of mole problems by the University of Missouri

found that moles consume up to 80 percent of their body weight each day. In the stomach of one mole, researchers found the remains of 187 grubs. To eliminate the grubs in your yard, apply Milky Spore, also from St. Gabriel Laboratories, to your lawn. It is guaranteed to eliminate grubs quickly and efficiently, and once applied, will remain viable in the soil for ten years. The spores in the product will not kill beneficial insects such as earthworms and one application keeps working for many seasons, unaffected by freezing or pesticides. Both Holy Moley and Milky Spore are pet approved by veterinarians and neither will affect wells, ponds or streams. For more information on Holy Moley and Milky Spore or to purchase, call St. Gabriel Organics at (800) 8010061 or visit www.MilkySpore.com.

A Luxury Basement Addition that Doesnt Break the Bank

(ARA) - In todays homes, comfort and serenity are the hot new watchwords. From simply using more tranquil paint colors to the more ambitious addition of meditation and luxury spa retreats, the pursuit of wellbeing is increasingly figuring into the plans of American homeowners. Fortunately, installing luxury bath fixtures in these new-age havens is a snap when Saniflo above-floor plumbing is used. Because Saniflos plumbing technology is unique, you can round out your new retreat with a full bath, a lavish steam shower, even a spa, anywhere in your home without digging up the floor to install piping. Saniflos no-fuss construction lets you create your in-home sanctuary quickly, without breaking the bank. Smarter Alternative Conventional plumbing is messy, time-consuming and costly to install. Saniflo manufactures a smart alternative that homeowners love: macerating plumbing systems. This above-floor plumbing technology can be used for toilets, sinks, tubs and spas, making it easy and costeffective to enhance a fitness or yoga room or a meditation retreat - even in basements and garages where conventional plumbing renovations are costprohibitive. Using Saniflo saves homeowners big bucks. When Duane Enoch and Daniel Pitman renovated the basement in their Brentwood, Tenn., home, they chose Saniflo to outfit not one, but two luxury baths. Initially, we had a plumbing contractor come out and quote us a price to rough in conventional, below-floor drain lines, Enoch explains. Going with Saniflo probably saved us ten grand. Whether youre installing one of the popular new personal sanctuaries in your home, or simply adding a spare bathroom, Saniflo can save you money, too. Whats the Secret? Above-floor plumbing is really quite simple. Instead of routing waste and water through a drain in the floor, the effluent is moved to a macerator pump, housed in a small plastic box installed at floor level behind the toilet, either in front of or inside the wall. The macerator quickly breaks up waste and quietly discharges it under pressure through smalldiameter, above-floor piping. Saniflo systems can be used with sewer or septic tanks. With macerating technology, there is no need to blast through concrete or dig up flooring to install piping and drainage. The plumbing works efficiently and effectively above the floor, giving homeowners the option of adding a full-service comfort space anywhere in the home: upstairs or down, inside or out. And Saniflos installation flexibility increases its appeal. Its a great choice for tight spaces, like underneath a stairway or inside a closet, says plumber Mike Coletto, an independent Chicago-area contractor with more than 15 years of residential plumbing experience. Above-floor plumbing is a super alternative to conventional plumbing. I like the way it can handle multiple fixtures and can work up to 12 feet below and as far as 150feet away from a septic tank or sewer line. Using Saniflo is a smart option for any plumbing installation. But if youre among the many homeowners desiring an in-home sanctuary, Saniflo should be your first step on the road to tranquility. For more information about Saniflo bathroom systems, call (800) 363-5874. Or visit Saniflo at www.saniflo.com

Coinciding with the launch of its dental awareness program, the Medical Veterinary Association (MVA), in partnership with Hill's Pet Nutrition, want to help raise awareness and understanding about the correlation between good dental hygiene and the general wellbeing of your pet. "The mouth provides a clear window into the body, reflecting health and disease," says Dr. Colin Harvey, Director of the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) from the University of Pennsylvania. "The more severe an infection in the mouth, the greater are the inflammatory and degenerative changes found in other organs throughout the pet's body." According to a recent survey commissioned by the MVA, 75% of pet owners don't

of their body will thank you for it too. In addition, feeding your pet specially formulated food and treats that are clinically proven to reduce gingivitis and the accumulation of plaque and tartar is an easy way to maintain oral health. Look for foods and treats marked with the VOHC seal of acceptance. Every step taken to protect our pet's teeth and mouth is a small but powerful way to ensure the rest of their body is in good health. We take pride in our smiles, pearly whites and good breath and your pets should too! To learn more about pet dental care visit www.petdental.com. Attention Parents and Students: De-Stress for Spring Success

vice president of education for Sylvan Learning Center. "Through effective time management and other strategies, students can create 'found time' and find themselves better prepared for all of the activities and challenges that come along with the final months of the school year." Inside and outside of the classroom, there are many ways that students can manage their workload and create time for stress-reducing activities at home. The education experts at Sylvan Learning Center have created the following tips to help students achieve academic success. Spring cleaning: Organization - both at home and at school - will save students time by eliminating the need to search for homework assignments, books and other items necessary for spring success. Create a "homework zone" that houses study tools and allows students to study without distraction. Spring check-up: Stay informed about the endof-school activities for which your child will be responsible. Encourage students to use planners to create timelines, or place a large calendar with deadlines and test dates in a visible area of the house. Spring tuneup: Help your child evaluate the subjects or areas that she finds most challenging. Assigning a priority to homework items according to their level of difficulty will save time by ensuring your child devotes the most energy to the areas that require extra focus and attention. Spring in your step: Exercise is a great way to alleviate stress and stimulate the mind. Taking short exercise breaks between assignments can refresh a student's energy level and renew focus. Spring break: Compressing study time into one all-nighter may seem like a good way to save time, but the brain is less efficient without taking a break to rest, and a student's memory can be affected. A better alternative is to ensure your child obtains the recommended amount of sleep by spreading study efforts out over a period of time. Spring forward: Use your family's "found time" to celebrate spring successes! Show your child that you are confident in her academic abilities, and reward the little things improved concentration while studying or proactively organizing her homework space. For additional educational resources for children in grades pre-K through 12, call 1-80031-SUCCESS or visit http:// tutoring.sylvanlearning.com.

Foresight is 20/20 When it Comes to Eye Health

(NUI) It is estimated that the number of people with vision loss in the United States will double over the next 20 years. If you were unaware that there are no early warning signs of vision loss from eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration, you're not alone. According to a study conducted by the National Eye Institute (NEI) and the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), most adults value their eyesight and are aware of serious eye diseases commonly associated with visual impairment. However, they lack knowledge of how and when to seek timely detection and treatment for those diseases. Fifty-one percent surveyed said that they have heard of eye diseases caused by diabetes, but only 11 percent knew that such diseases do not have early warning signs. The study's findings reinforce the critical need to educate the public about common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration. Hispanic respondents reported the lowest access to eye health information at 41 percent, compared with 28 percent of Asians, 26 percent of African Americans and 16 percent of Caucasians. "Good eyesight is important to our quality of life. It is essential for adults to have accurate information that will help them make informed decisions about their eye health needs," said Dr. Paul Sieving, director of NEI. To help increase awareness about eye diseases, LCIF has developed the Lions Eye Health Program (LEHP) a communitybased education program for Lions Clubs, other community organizations and individuals to promote healthy vision and to raise awareness of the causes of preventable vision loss. The program encourages annual dilated eye exams and educates those with low vision and their caregivers about the condition. "Lions have long been champions of people who are blind and visually impaired," said Jimmy Ross, chairperson of LCIF. "By better educating the public on the need for regular eye exams and timely treatment of eye diseases, we can end preventable blindness." For more information on LEHP and eye health, visit www.lcif.org.

(NUI) - In years past, the onset of spring signaled to students the beginning of the end of the school year. Today, this season has increasingly become one of the most stressful times of the year due to the convergence of extracurricular activities, sports, end-of-year assessments, projects and, for high-school students, college admissions. "As stress builds for students during the second half of the school year, the best release to this 'academic pressure cooker' may also be the most simple - time!" says Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D. and

Top Five Automobile Features of 2007

(NUI) - With 2007 behind us, car buyers have a lot to look forward to in 2008. Whether related to safety, comfort or convenience, carmakers are constantly developing a wide variety of new features to attract new-car shoppers. So, which new car feaures are worth noting? With countless hours behind the wheel of new vehicles, the Cars.com reviewers identified what they consider the five most notable features that debuted in 2007. The top five new-car features according to Cars.com include: 1. Lane-departure prevention. This is a warning system that detects lane markings and sounds a chime if you drift astray. If the warnings are ignored, LDP goes one step further by gently applying the brakes to certain wheels to nudge you back on course. On straight roads, it intervenes with just a hint of deceleration, and the dashboard chime alerts you of its actions. 2. Full-size hybrid SUVs or trucks. To date, hybrid technology has graced only compact and midsize SUVs. Sharing a new, Two-Mode Hybrid system, several GM and Chrysler Group full-size SUVs and a pickup truck deliver significant mileage gains-if early estimates prove accurate. The trucks give up almost none of their hauling and towing capabilities, remaining useful to the people who really need them. 3. Heartbeat sensor. Cars.com is dubious about the usefulness of a heartbeat sensor, but they were won over by the fact that such a futuristic feature is available in today's cars. The heartbeat sensor, found in the Volvo S80, can help you determine whether someone is waiting inside your car and is part of the S80 sedan's Personal Car Communicator fob that can also do things like tell you if your car is locked or unlocked, up to about 300 feet away. 4. Sirius satellite TV. Any parent can tell you that one of the big drags about taking children on long trips is all the stuff you've got to carry with you. Chrysler's new Sirius Satellite TV makes this a bit easier by removing your DVD collection from the list. Your children can watch one of the three channels (the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network) on one or both of the rear swing-down screens; if it's just one, the other can show a DVD or video game. 5. Volvo blind spot information system. Volvo prides itself on safety innovations, and this is the latest. The new models have an optional blind spot information system that alerts drivers about cars that are hard to spot using mirrors. Two cameras are attached to the side mirrors, and a pale orange light illuminates whenever changing lanes would lead to hitting someone in the dreaded blind spot.

Proton Therapy Innovator Puts Cancer Patients on a New Road to Recovery

(NUI) - When people think about cancer treatments, most only consider surgery, standard radiation or chemotherapy as options and usually know about the serious side effects associated. However, what most fail to recognize is a treatment known as proton beam therapy. Loma Linda University Medical Center, in southern California, opened the world's first hospital-based proton treatment center for cancer patients in 1990. Now, some 18 years later, LLUMC has given a hero's treatment to the physician who pioneered the technology that has helped thousands of patients in their battles against cancer. LLUMC has named its renowned proton center in honor of Dr. James M. Slater, the father of clinical proton therapy development at the medical center and one of the earliest innovators who pointed cancer treatment in a new direction worldwide. "I became very interested in proton beam therapy in the 1960s, when I saw the devastating side effects that untargeted radiotherapy has on cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment," Slater said. "I realized that this problem could be minimized if normaltissue exposure to radiation was reduced." Today, proton therapy is considered one of the most successful and least invasive treatments for many types of cancer. Proton therapy treatment utilizes targeted proton beams, rather than generalized radiation that produces more morbidity. Additionally, the ability of this therapy to prevent normal tissues and healthy organs from being exposed to radiation can improve the quality of life for cancer patients both during and after treatment. It's no wonder that thousands of patients are seen annually at LLUMC's James M. Slater, M.D. Proton Treatment and Research Center. In fact, LLUMC has treated more than 14,000 patients in their battles against deeptissue cancers and other diseases and currently provides proton therapy to more patients worldwide than any other center of its kind about 150 patients every day. For more information on

proton therapy and LLUMC, visit www.protons.com or call 1-800-PROTONS (776-8667).

Let HYDROTHERAPY

Melt Your Stress Away

(NUI) - While we may enjoy the company of our family and friends, there's one companion that always outstays its welcome as soon as it arrives stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 40 percent of workers say that their jobs are very stressful. Other stress experts report that 75 to 90 percent of visits to the doctor for primary care are due to a stress-related illnesses. While countless medications are prescribed daily to those looking for solace from their seemingly endless cycle of symptoms, which include muscle tension, fatigue and general unhappiness, people are turning to a treatment that's as ancient as it is simple hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy works by harnessing the combined effect of heat, massage and the buoyancy of water to relieve the body. Unwinding in warm water has been a practice for hundreds of years, and its scientific effects have proven that warm water maximize the positive effects of hydrotherapy. Insomnia. If you depend on sedatives or other sleep-aid medications to get some shut-eye, try a round of hydrotherapy instead. Taking a few minutes to de-stress in a hot tub has been shown to prepare your body for a restful night's sleep naturally without the side effects of some medicines. Additionally, Sundance Spas offers chromatherapy lighting effects that can help you further relax and feel tranquil amid soft greens, blues and purples. Arthritis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of every five American adults has been professionally diagnosed with a form of arthritis. Studies have shown that warm-water hydrotherapy helps arthritis sufferers by increasing blood flow to joints, relaxing muscles, increasing range of motion and helping to relieve associated pain.

dilates blood vessels, increasing blood flow to sore or damaged tissues while simultaneously triggering the release of endorphins, the body's natural stress fighter. These days, getting the benefits of hydrotherapy at home has become a reachable goal with the popularity of selfcontained hot tubs. Hot tubs have made the jump into many Americans' back yards due to their many benefits for health ailments. While you may know that hydrotherapy helps with typical aches and pains, the

following chronic conditions have been successfully managed by hopping into a relaxing, swirling hot tub: Diabetes. Using a hot tub or spa for hydrotherapy benefits those suffering from Type 2 diabetes, as the combination of heat and massage helps reduce blood sugar levels in the body. Jacuzzi, a longstanding company, has perfected the massage technique with its 50/50 airto-water mix that massages deeply, yet gently, to

(ARA) - As we grow older we look forward to the changes that life brings - retirement, grandchildren, financial security and travel. Other changes we might not accept so readily are the aches and pains and mental slowdowns that leave us longing for the good old days of our youth. We think we have to put up with degeneration when aging, but that is not true. Staying active is key for a healthy lifestyle, but what else can we do to benefit our bodies as we age? The Human growth hormone (HGH) might be a key element in feeling your best as you age. When HGH was first discovered, its only purpose was thought to be to stimulate body growth to adult size. Recent studies have found that one of the main reasons the body ages is because of the decrease in HGH, which helps the body regenerate. It is possible that aging symptoms -- rise in blood glucose, high blood pressure and even skin wrinkles -- can be treated by maintaining HGH levels in the body. Receptor sites exist in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so regeneration and healing effects can be quite comprehensive. Until now, HGH therapy was injectable, costly and messy, available only to celebrities and the very wealthy. In 1997 a group of doctors and scientists developed an all-natural source product which causes your own natural HGH to be released again. GHR, manufactured by Global Health Products, is a capsule that works as a natural releaser for HGH. It has no known side effects, unlike the synthetic version, and has no known drug interactions. Aging baby boomers and seniors can feel young again by realizing HGH potential. Some think that HGH is so comprehensive in its healing and regenerative powers that it has the capability to displace many prescription and nonprescription drugs. HGH is known to help treat hemorrhoids, autoimmune diseases, macular degeneration, cataracts, fibromyalgia, angina, chronic fatigue, diabeticneuropathy, hepatitis C, chronic constipation, high blood pressure, sciatica, kidney dialysis, and heart and stroke recovery. As seniors and others deal with health-care coverage problems, it is important to look at what you can do for yourself to ensure your healthiness. HGH can be particularly helpful to the elderly who, given a choice, would rather stay happy, healthy and independent in their own home. HGH gives the possibility of real health, not just treating sickness.

NAILS IN THE FENCE ~ Author unknown ~

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His Father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still there." A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are very rare jewels, indeed! They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share words of praise and they always want to open their hearts to us." Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND, even if it means sending it back to the person who sent it to you. If it comes back to you, then you'll know you have a circle of friends. Just one more thing... Please forgive me if I have ever left a hole in your fence! Email me at, Michael@ BurkesBeach.com, if you would like a copy of this emailed to you for your own use. Estero

FIVE TIPS FOR AN 'ALL GIRLS GETAWAY' THIS SPRING
Trotter's and The Magnificent Mile? No matter where you decide to go, it's important to remember to do your research. These travel tips provided by the "All Girls Getaway" Fine Living Network series can help you plan your perfect getaway: 1. Be versatile. At high altitudes, it's wise to dress in layers. Days can be hot while evenings can be very cold, making the versatility of layering ideal. Also, drink plenty of water. 2. Stay dry. If you think your clothes will get wet on your adventures, bring plastic bags in which to store them for the trip home. 3. Be renter savvy. Remember some rental car companies charge a fee for additional drivers, so read the fine print. And before renting that sporty convertible, consider they usually have only half the trunk space of a sedan. 4. Pack tight. To conserve space, consider vacuum-packing your clothes. 5. Let yourself adjust. If your travel plans have you crossing time zones, spend 30 minutes outside in the sunlight once you arrive to help your body adjust.

(NUI) - Spring is almost here, and it's time to get out and about in the warm weather with your gal pals. There's nothing like a getaway with all the girls to catch up. Where to? How about to a mountain cabin in Asheville, N.C.? Or maybe you'd rather experience the surf and a safari in San Diego, Calif.? Or perhaps you'd like to stop in Chicago, Ill., for a tour of the town, a shopping excursion and a makeover? The options are limitless. That's why the new Fine Living Network series "All Girls Getaway" is a great place to get ideas about where to go as well as travel tips. For example, spending time in a mountain cabin in Asheville may sound low-key until you find out that in the spring The Biltmore Estate holds the Festival of Flowers showcasing more than 50,000 beautiful tulips. Did you know San Diego is known for perfect weather, beaches and popular attractions such as the world-famous San Diego Zoo and Sea World? And how can anyone skip Chicago with the Steppenwolf Theater, The Field Museum, Charlie
