This column is produced by the Financial Planning Association and provided by Al Procaccino, a member of FPA and Certified Financial Planner with Castle Financial www.castlefinancial.com . It's a much different picture renovating a home now than a decade ago. Fueled by huge gains in the price of real estate, homeowners a decade ago were tapping home equity with little care since prices were expected to keep climbing, more than covering the cost of such improvements. Today, lenders tend to be a lot choosier about whom they do business with. So before considering a home renovation, it makes sense to make sure your financial house is in order: Start with your credit report: If you're considering borrowing, make sure your credit report and payment records are in the best possible shape. Team-Based Business Takes the Market
takes for products to cycle through planning, design, testing, development and market entry. The technology, automotive, computer and healthcare industries especially rely on innovative global partnerships. To develop its 787 Dreamliner, Boeing used global interdisciplinary job teams and more than 70 companies. Progressive companies that use worldwide work teams are called "global collaborative enterprises." The employees who work in these systems need to develop exceptional communication skills. Engineers, for example, must become "system thinkers." Instead of working closely with one team in one office, engineers work with multidisciplinary teams across disparate time zones. Managers can no longer rely on their personal skills, which diminish in comparison to the market's larger universe of talents and abilities. Managers need to approach projects holistically. Good collaborators will always focus on innovation and will import widely dispersed knowledge and skills. The world provides a tremendous pool of resources that can improve quality and efficiency in product design if businesses can harness it. Fortunately, tools help workers operate in collaborative work environments. Instant messaging and videoconferencing speed up communication. Some firms use virtual work environments to simulate physical work spaces. "Avatars," or digitally rendered headshots that move across computer screens, help workers feel like they're talking face-toface. Addressing the cultural shift in the workplace and its impact on technical careers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) holds conferences on multidisciplinary collaboration, global partnering and project teaming. In the past, businesses relied on hierarchies. But to leverage technology, knowledge and human talent, businesses seek assets worldwide. Get Your Eyes in Shape for Summer with the Right Eyewear
many things to consider -size, shape, color, design - but what many people neglect to consider is getting the best lenses. Fashion can meet function this summer by adding a healthy dose of wellness a n d prevention to the search for the perfect shades. It's even more important than smart style to choose highquality lenses. At any age, but particularly after the age of 40, eye protection and quality sun lenses are necessary. Style expert and host of the Style Network's top-rated show "How Do I Look?" Finola Hughes, says her best accessory this year is eyewear. "Sunglasses can finish off a look and make anyone feel stylish and hip, but it's important to pick the right sunwear frames for your face and age," Hughes says. "This summer I added a great pair of white and black buckle designer sunglasses to my wardrobe, but I made sure they were fitted with Varilux polarized with Crizal Sun lenses." Premium lenses provide complete protection form UV rays, along with better vision, reduced glare, sharper images and improved depth-perception. Some lenses like new Crizal Sun Mirrors offer 100 percent protection from UV rays and feature a brilliant, mirrored front side, dual-sided and fullyintegrated scratch protection, and super-hydrophobic properties. Most people take care to prevent sun damage with sunscreen, so it's important to take the same preventative measures when it comes to eyes. When choosing new summer specs, consider the following from Hughes: Protect your eyes from harmful UV rays with polarized sunglass lenses, like Varilux with Crizal Sun lenses. Your eyes don't need to suffer to be fashionable - most designer frames can be outfitted with a highquality lens. Classic sunglass frame styles that are essential to complete any wardrobe are wayfarers, aviators, large tortoiseshell and square black -- they will take you from season to season. Choose the right frames for your face by concentrating on color and size. Pay attention to your complexion; if you have a pale or sallow complexion, find a good shade to complement it, like a warm brown or amber. Conversely, if you have a darker or olive complexion, hit the reds and pinks, they will look luscious next to your skin. Above all else, always be sure to line the top of your sunglass frames with your eyebrows -- nobody wants to resemble a bug. If you're in your 20s and 30s, experiment with trendier fun styles. For 40 and up, have fun in a more artistic fashion by choosing frames that are clever and architectural. For more sunwear tips visit www.mybestaccessory.com.

Place fillets on a shallow plate. Mix olive oil, vinegar, tarragon, salt and pepper in a small bowl until well blended. Pour two-thirds of the marinade over the Catfish. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes to marinate. Reserve the remaining marinade to use as salad dressing. Prepare a grill or preheat the broiler to 500 degrees F. Place Catfish fillets on an oiled grill rack or broiler pan rack. Grill or broil four inches from the heat source for two to three minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily. Remove and allow to cool slightly. Serve warm. Toss salad greens, mushrooms and the reserved marinade in a large bowl. Top with grilled Catfish.
Heat butter in a large saucepan over medium heat, add garlic and red bell pepper and saut for 1 minute. Add artichokes and lemon juice. Stir in almonds, salt and pepper and saut for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and top with parsley. Serve immediately. *To prepare artichokes, trim outer bottom leaves and stem. Blanch in salted, boiling water with lemon juice for about 20 minutes, or until tender. Remove from the water and cool. Remove leaves and reserve for another use. With a spoon, scoop out the hairy choke and reserve the hearts. This may seem like a hassle, but you'll find that in terms of flavour and texture, using fresh artichoke hearts instead of canned makes a big difference. If you're in a hurry, though, you can use artichoke bottoms from a can, drained and rinsed.
Place bananas, juice concentrate and milk in blender container or food processor bowl. Cover and blend until combined. Add ice cream; blend until smooth. Pour into glasses. Top with whipped cream, coconut and pineapple. Serve immediately.

home; however, not only will it keep the exterior of your home looking tidy, it can also prevent potential problems down the road. Clean up the yard. Unsightly weeds, overgrown hedges and grass, and mulch strewn about can give a home a disheveled appearance. Spend a weekend outside tending to the property, planting flowers and pulling weeds. Look for vinyl fencing, deck or railing for an added extra touch to your outdoor living areas such as CertainTeed's EverNew deck and railing or Chesterfield vinyl fence with CertaStucco. Make it shine. Adding more lighting or just upgrading fixtures that are already in place are easy and affordable solutions when thinking about what to do to the outside of your home. Consider putting in either solar-powered or electric walkway lights, or if you're feeling particularly creative, think about highlighting trees in your yard with small lights or hanging paper lanterns from your front porch. Maturity. Immature children are still deeply entrenched in imaginative play and might struggle socially. Typically, a child with older siblings matures faster and is more independent than a first-born child, so some children may be ready to start early. Academics. Do not obsess over a child's academic ability. Teachers never know how a child is going to perform academically until the child actually starts kindergarten. If a child doesn't know all the letters, this doesn't mean he or she is not ready for school. Structure. If the child was in a structured environment, such as preschool or day care, their transition to kindergarten shouldn't be hard. Children coming from environments in which they were allowed to do whatever they wanted might struggle with kindergarten's regimen. If you decide to keep your child out of school one year, consider Developmental Kindergarten (DK). Made up mostly of children who were old enough to enter kindergarten but are waiting a year, most children who attend DK enter kindergarten well prepared and confident. Seeing the World, Saving the Planet
(NUI) Many people hope to see the world. But as industrialization, pollution and global warming threaten one-of-akind locales, many Americans travel with a new sense of urgency - they want to see the world before it's gone. People are booking trips to raft China's Yangtze River before the government builds a dam in 2009. Others want to hike the Amazonian rain forest while it still stands. But people can travel, not only to see the world, but also to preserve its wonders. Eco-tourism, which protects both environments and cultures, attracts socially and environmentally concerned travelers. In 2006, a National Geographic Traveler study reported that over 55 million Americans were interested in sustainable travel. Many travellers don't just settle for a trip or two, but devote their lives to helping others travel green. As tour directors, eco-enthusiasts can arrange Earth-friendly trips, work with local communities and teach their travel groups. One tour director, Lee Burch, said that his career "combines travel, which I have a passion for, with making a difference in people's lives." Tour directors, unlike local tour guides, become fully responsible for a tour group over an extended amount of time. They help immerse tourists in local communities by setting up stays, arranging activities, and discussing local culture, food, art and history. The International Tour Management Institute (ITMI), a California-based school that teaches its students to direct tours, emphasizes the career's flexibility. Tour directors can be full-time or parttime. They can lead tours at home or abroad. Globally, tourism provides one in every 12 jobs. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, international tourism gives 46 of the 49 poorest countries their largest income. Eco-tourism doesn't have to mean jungles or deserts. Tour directors can take people to America's Ozarks - or on a walking trip around New York or to a farmer's market in San Francisco. Ted Bravos, the co-founder of the International Tour Management Institute (ITMI), calls travel "a vehicle for world citizenship." Considering today's political tensions and climate concerns, the world could use more global ambassadors. For more information on the travel and tour directing industry, visit www.itmisf.com.
