Presenting Luxurious Bonita Springs and Estero Lifestyle

January, 2008

It is not just about the Sunshine!

So what's the big deal about the Gulf Coast? How about starting your mornings at Caf Bonaparte for some gourmet coffee, lunch at Doc's Beach House which is a landmark in Bonita Springs and then an afternoon stroll through Coconut Point Mall doing some window shopping and people watching? To top off a "pictureperfect" day, enjoy a fine dinner at one of the outstanding restaurants the greater Coconut Point area has to offer, such as Ruth's Chris Steak House, Blue Water Bistro or Ristorante Farfalla, on any day at any time of the year. If you already live in this tropical paradise, you know the answer. But as homebuyers scout the stretches of Florida for their next home, vacation rental or investment property; it's time to let them in on the secret of why we call this beach paradise "Home"! Industry experts are all saying the same thing Homebuyers in Southwest Florida have never had so much selection in choice or price when it comes to real estate. But when a homebuyer is looking to make a purchase, their reasons for buying where they do stretch far beyond the four walls of the home, and often depend more on what each city has to offer. When visitors first come to our area, it's our beaches that are usually one of the first things they notice. Vanderbilt Beach has long topped the list for locals with it's "see-and-beseen" reputation. Our outdoor living trumps the competition with such angler favorites as Chokoloskee Island and the Naples Pier. The serious buyer and serious angler will find these areas hard to pass up. But to really stand out, we need to go beyond the beach. Florida remains one of the top relocation destinations, and as the housing market continues to make a slow rebound, cities within the Sunshine State are finding themselves in competition with each other. That's where things such as the exquisite dining of the Gulf Coast makes its mark with such culinary cuisine as Truluck's, waterfront hot-spot USS Nemo, and a true Southwest Florida one-and-only, Shane's Cabana Bar at Bayfront. The Gulf-Coast is also rapidly establishing itself as an artist's retreat, making it marketable to the elite of all things expressive. From Opera to the Philharmonic Orchestra to the Florida Repertory Theatre, those seeking a culture outside the "surf and sand" are taking note and taking notice! Speaking of taking notice, the travel industry recently released their quarterly numbers for air travel in September, and Delta came in at the top spot with more than 73,000 people flying into Southwest Florida International Airport. The travel hub served more than 76 million passengers last year and remains one of the top 50 busiest airports in the nation! It's these things that realtors and industry experts say will mean the difference between a home for sale and a home sold. You already know all this. Now perhaps this list will remind you of what brought you to this gorgeous waterfront city, and why you established your own love affair with this great place!!! Don't ever forget to appreciate what a great piece of "paradise" we have here!

Thinking About A New Career Direction In '08? Here's How To Prepare For Your Own Business
This column is produced by the Financial Planning Association and is provided by Al Procaccino, a member of FPA and Certified Financial Planner with Castle Financial www.castlefinancial.com. In 2008, commit to a financial plan... If you've ever fantasized about quitting your job and starting a business, you're certainly not alone. But it's definitely not something to do on a whim. A business startup requires parallel planning in advance for your business and personal finances. That's because business owners - even those who are acquiring ongoing businesses or starting their own companies on the cheap - quickly find their business and personal finances are inextricably linked. So instead of saying you're going to start a business in 2008, commit to making a solid financial plan for that business in 2008 for a launch later on. Here are some basic steps to consider right now: Start with advice: You need not one, but two sets of financial advice when starting a business. The first involves the viability of your business concept. You should understand your business idea inside and out before you launch and what your new company's immediate and longterm cash needs will be. The second set of advice involves your own finances and how prepared you are for what will surely be a major lifestyle transition. Because new business owners frequently underestimate their new business's expenses starting out, they can find themselves funding those business needs out-of-pocket. That means less money for dayto-day living expenses as well as long-term planning for retirement. That's why it's critical to consult a tax and financial expert such as a Certified Financial Planner professional at the outset. Focus on your debts first: With the possible exception of mortgage debt, there's very little "good debt" in the life of a businessperson. So while you're researching your business concept and putting together your own financial plan, start cutting back and erasing as much credit card and adjustablerate debt from your life as possible. While you might find that plenty of people might want to lend you money as a new business owner, remember that you'll have the most flexibility in your business - and your life - when you owe as little as possible. Start thinking about your legal business structure: Your personal financial situation and the kind of business you're starting should determine the legal designation of your company. Before choosing a business structure, such as a sole proprietorship, S or C corporation, partnership, Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), or Limited Liability Company (LLC), owners should reflect on their business in the context of their overall financial life and ask themselves a series of questions: Is the business going to be your primary source of personal wealth and daily cash flow, or is it a side business? Do you expect the business to pay for your retirement? Do you want it to provide other financial benefits? Do you want to pass it on to family members or sell it to existing employees or outside buyers? The answers to these questions figure importantly into the decision, along with other key factors such as what type of business it is, its risk factors, current tax laws, and regulations such as workman's compensation. Get your emergency fund in shape: While it's wise for everyone to have 3-6 months of cash set aside for basic living expenses in case they lose their job or face a medical emergency, emergency funds are particularly necessary for new business owners. Startups can be particularly expensive, and most businesses are not profitable from day one. Better yet, plan an emergency fund not only for yourself, but for the business as well. Plan your healthcare and other basic benefits: Automatic benefits are the plus side of working for someone else. When you're working for yourself, you become your own HR department and chances are you won't be able to match your old employer's buying power. If you support a family with these benefits or if you have particular health concerns, you need to price the out-of-pocket costs of such benefits before starting your own company - depending on the business and the cost of those benefits, you might want to rethink your plans. Price disability coverage now: You might have short-term disability coverage as part of your current employee benefits, but that will likely end once you quit your job. You should price long-term disability coverage based on your present working salary so you can qualify for the highest possible benefit. Disability coverage is critical for self-employed people since they're their own support system.

May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions!

BUSINESS
(CL) Despite headlinegrabbing figures and further forays by government officials into helping homeowners, foreclosure statistics are being widely criticized as inaccurate. The criticism rests largely with Irvine, California-based Realty Trac, one of the major suppliers of foreclosure statistics throughout the country. Simply put, many across the country are questioning the validity of the companys figures, saying the numbers are inflated because many of the foreclosures the company reports are halted when homeowners resolve their debt. for example, where Realty Trac reported more than 54,000 foreclosures in 2006, were criticized by the states Division of Housing, which reported the actual number of foreclosures to be less than 29,000. The crux of the problem appears to be Realty Trac reporting homes that have gone into the process of foreclosure as actual foreclosures, when in reality, many homeowners that go into foreclosure eventually resolve their debt and avoid losing their homes.

Stay Warm and Stylish All Winter Long
(ARA) - Designer Christian Dior once said, "Without hats we would have no civilization." With winter upon us, there is no better time to express your unique style while staying warm under the latest, trendy hats of the season. "Clothing is a unique expression of self and hats definitely get noticed," says Susan Lee, hat designer with the Village Hat Shop. "Hats stand out and you can easily change the entire look of an outfit simply by changing your hat. There is no better time than winter to start experimenting with hats." Lee offers a heads up about this winter's hat trends. Start With the Basics Berets are hot. High-quality berets are versatile, well made and can be worn all year long. They can be worn in a more traditional "French" style or pulled back to fit on the crown of the head for a more modern look. Traditional berets are made with wool, but the look of a beret can be changed entirely when made from chunky yarns, Angora or even velvet. Whether the entire hat is crochet or features crochet accessories, a handmade look grosgrain ribbon to dress it up, a fedora can make a woman look mysterious like M a r l e n e Dietrich and make a man look (and feel) like Indiana Jones or Frank Sinatra. A fedora is also a great winter hat as the brim helps keep rain, sleet and snow off the face. enhances any outfit. Indiana Who? For decades handsome men have sported classic fedoras, but they look great on daring women too. This feminine hat can be dressed down in fleece or felt or even dressed up in silk to complement an elegant cocktail dress. Plain or embellished with sequins, feathers or flowers, a cloche adds romance and elegance to every look. If you're worried your trendy new hat will leave you with flat hat hair, don't. If you're wearing the hat for less than a few hours, take off the hat and add a styling product to reshape your hair. "If you're wearing the hat for longer than a few hours," says Lee, "just find one that's too good to take off then you don't have to worry about hat hair." The Village Hat Shop offers an enormous selection of hats for all seasons and, during their 27 years in business, has won numerous awards and high praise for their customer service and quick turnaround time. Secrets of Great Winter Hair

(ARA) - Winter brings with it frosty nights, sparkling snow, crisp air, crackling fires and dreaded hat hair. Who Helped Pack Your Parachute?

Every now and then I hear a story that is so great I just have to pass it on to the people I care about. Here it is: Charles Plumb was a U.S. Navy jet pilot in Vietnam. After 75 combat missions his plane was destroyed by a surface-to-air missile. Plumb ejected and parachuted into enemy hands. He was captured and spent six years in a communist Vietnamese prison. He survived the ordeal and now lectures on lessons learned from that experience. One day, when Plumb and his wife were sitting in a restaurant, a man at another table came up and said, "You're Plumb! You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the aircraft carrier Kitty Haw. You were shot down!" How in the world did you know that? asked Plumb. I packed your parachute the man replied. Plumb gasped in surprise and gratitude. The man pumped his hand and said, "I guess it worked!" Plumb assured him, "it sure did. If your chute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today." Plumb couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. Plumb says, "I kept wondering what he might have looked like in a Navy uniform: a white hat, a bib in the back, and bell-bottom trousers. I wonder how many times I might have seen him and not even said, 'Good morning, how are you?' or anything because, you see, I was a fighter pilot and he was just a sailor." Plumb thought of the many hours the sailor had spent at a long wooden table in the bowels of the ship, carefully weaving the shrouds and folding the silks of each chute, holding in his hands each time the fate of someone he didn't know.

tips, news and advice for homeowners

Boiler Technology Proven to be 'Green' and to Cut Costs

(NUI) - In today's conservationsavvy world, the term "green" has taken on a whole new meaning that stretches far beyond a mere color. From popular television programs to world leaders, many public figures have taken the initiative to tell others to help improve the environment. So how can you take your first step toward going green? Quite simply, it starts in your home. Lowering your home's energy consumption not only saves you money every month and helps aid the environment it also increases the value of your home. A Maine Energy Efficiency Building Performance Standards study concluded that home values increase by $20 per dollar reduced in annual utility costs. As more North American residents seek to build a better future for their families and make the world greener, proven European hydronic heating technology is emerging as a reasonable home appliance investment. Italian-made Baxi wall-hung boilers, for instance, enable homeowners to save fuel, money, space and the environment, while increasing the resale value of their homes. A 2007 field test in southern Ontario produced fuel consumption and gas bill savings of up to 59 percent a month compared to the previous year. The test involved installing a natural gas-fired Baxi Luna combination heating and tankless hot water boiler, together with a hydronic air

Go Green and Save Green with a High-Efficiency Water Heater

(NUI) - As energy costs rise, the "green" movement and conservation efforts have become popular topics. Energy-saving recommendations appear daily in the media, and consumers are being offered subsidies or state and federal tax credits to encourage the purchase of more efficient appliances. However, many homeowners fail to consider their water heater when it comes to going "green." Although today's water heaters are expected to operate for an average of 13 years, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends shopping for a new water heater if your current unit is more than seven years old. This allows an adequate amount of time for homeowners to research and select a water heater that best meets their needs instead of waiting until their heater breaks down and selecting the cheapest quick fix for cold showers. Consumers are increasingly turning to high-efficiency water hybrid, gas condensing, residential unit incorporating tank-type and tankless technology, provided the best overall performance at average and high-volume hot water usage, which is the consumption of 64 gallons or more per day of hot water. Endorsed by long time environmental champion Ed Begley Jr. of the HGTV series "Living With Ed," the Vertex provides sufficient quantities of hot water for shower after shower and operates at 90 percent thermal efficiency. Additionally, it is designed to meet the demands that modern lifestyles require. "Using more efficient combustion to produce hot water at lower operating costs and 90 percent thermal efficiency, the Vertex is a good choice for customers who want to save energy without skimping on hot water," said David Chisolm, A. O. Smith Water Heater brand manager. For more information on the A. O. Smith Vertex model, visit www.hotwater.com/green.

heaters when replacing older units or during remodeling and building projects. While these models may cost more initially, savings in water and energy usage continue throughout the lifetime of the appliance, offsetting the price difference. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that these units use 10 to 50 percent less energy, benefits to both your budget and the environment. A recent study by the Gas Technology Institute simulated the residential performance of high-efficiency water heaters and conventional units. The Vertex from A. O. Smith, a

handler, in a 1,900 square-foot home. Other highlights of the field test included: Family members found hydronic heating to be much more comfortable than their previous forced-air furnace system. The boiler's endless hot-wateron-demand function eliminated arguments about running out of hot water during morning showers. Homeowners expected to save up to $1,000 a year by reducing natural gas use by 530 therms. Fuel consumption savings were equal to greenhouse gas emissions of 2.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide. Studies show it would take parking a car for more than six years, or planting an acre of trees to produce the same positive environmental impact. Baxi wall-hung boilers are Energy Star rated and certified by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Installed only by qualified heating and plumbing contractors, they can achieve energy efficiencies ranging from 86 to 98 percent respectively. How to Make Your Home Green

MAKE A HEALTHY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION FOR YOUR PET
(ARA) - A researcher at the University of Hertfordshire, England, has proven that pets and their owners often look, think and act alike. Unfortunately, that's not always a good thing; pets and humans can have similar weight problems. It's estimated that between 25 and 40 percent of dogs and cats and 31 percent of people in this country are overweight. The problem is even worse for pet horses; a recent study at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine and Virginia Tech found roughly half were overweight. What's the solution? Add your pets to your own weight-loss resolutions for 2008. Having a companion will help you lose weight and improve your pet's health. Studies have shown that people who exercise with friends are far more likely to keep up a workout regimen and that people diet more effectively with friends. Exercising with a four-legged friend results in a healthier pet owner, and can even help a human recover from surgery more quickly. "What many of us assumed was true for decades has now been proven -- taking a dog for a walk is healthy for both the dog and the dog's owner," says Dr. Roger K. Mahr, past president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), who has spoken out on the important linkages between animal and human health. "Many pet owners are probably more concerned about exercising their pets than they are about getting some exercise for their own health, but both will live a healthier life as a result. Pets don't just improve your quality of life; they also improve your health." Just like humans, overweight dogs and cats are more likely to get a number of diseases and health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, skin conditions, liver disease, and joint problems. So putting yourself, Fido, Fluffy, and/or Flicka on a diet and exercise regiment will result in a better new year for everyone. Here are some AVMA pet weight-loss tips: A visit to your veterinarian is the best way to determine if your pet is overweight, but there are a couple common sense guidelines. A dog should have a discernible waist without fat deposits, and ribs should be easy to feel while stroking a dog. In cats, if there is any rounding of the abdomen or bulging in the back, limbs, neck or face, you've got a fat cat. Carefully measure the food you give your pets and feed them at and allergies. The increasing availability of new technology and innovative products is making it easier to achieve a healthy, safe and efficient home. In fact, anyone can implement aspects of green design. It can be as simple as purchasing bulkproduct dispensers or as extensive as installing a tankless water heater for the entire home. Here are a few ideas for the homeowner that chooses to go green: Appliances: Choose highefficiency water heaters, lowflow toilets and showerheads, faucet aerators, and energyand water-efficient appliances. Consider using bulk-product dispensers for body-care products. Flooring: Reuse existing flooring and subflooring when possible and look at flooring made from natural or rapidly renewable materials for new floors. Refinish wood floors using safe processes and with greener and safer materials. Avoid carpeting in high moisture areas or where spills could occur. Consider removable area rugs instead of wall-towall carpeting Lighting: Make smart use of natural light and supplement it with efficient electric lighting like compact fluorescent bulbs. Paints: Use low- or zeroVOC (volatile organic compound) paints, finishes, adhesives, grouts, caulking, and sealants. Furnishings: Choose cabinetry and other furnishings made from recycled or reclaimed materials or wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. There are a number of products on the market, including countertops, tables, chairs and flooring, made from a wide range of recycled and reclaimed materials. Select compact furniture that incorporates storage and consider reused, salvaged or antique furniture. Water Use: Set water heater temperatures no higher than necessary and conserve water Safety: Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

least twice a day. If the pet hasn't finished their food in about 20 minutes, take the bowl away to discourage overeating. Dogs and cats fed once a day, or continuously, tend to be the fattest. Monitor the number and size of the treats you give in praise. A large dog treat can be over 100 calories, while a small treat has as little as 10 calories. If you can't help but treat your beloved pet, break them in half to cut the calories. Diet pet foods are available but must meet certain standards to qualify for that designation. For instance, "low-calorie" dog food must be no more than 310 calories per cup for dry food or 90 calories per 1/2 cup wet, and "low-fat" or "lean" must be no more than 9 percent fat in dry food and 4 percent fat wet. High-fiber pet foods can help a pet's diet by making your best friend feel full with fewer calories. No-salt, canned string beans can be added to either dry or wet food to provide bulk and fiber with very few calories. The more exercise the better research has shown that dogs are 10 percent less likely to be obese for each hour of exercise they got every day. To exercise a cat, engage them with a feather, string or laser pointer, and try to get them running after a toy as they swat at it. To exercise a dog, consider agility training, play time with other dogs, and chasing a ball or Frisbee. There is no better exercise for dogs, horses and humans than a brisk walk. Hypothyroidism is a common cause of obesity in humans, dogs and cats, but it's much easier to diagnose in humans. If your dog or cat is obese without a clear cause, make a veterinary appointment. Finally, if your pet is a little on the pudgy side, and you think it might benefit from an increased exercise regiment, see a veterinarian first. No exercise program should begin without a veterinary checkup. If your pet is more than 20 percent overweight, consult your veterinarian immediately. For more information on pet health, please visit www.avma.org.

(ARA) From floor plans to new furnishings, home remodeling comes with endless choices and possibilities. Whether its a small project or a major addition, one important element to keep in mind as a homeowner makes those choices is green design. To make it easier to incorporate green elements in renovation projects, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Foundation partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to produce green remodeling guidelines for the homeowner, builder, designer and construction professional. Green design not only reduces the impact on the environment and saves resources, it promotes a healthy lifestyle free of toxic materials

Seal the Cracks in Your Energy Bill

(NUI) - With the average home's energy bill higher than ever before, many people simply turn up the heat without eyeing the potential culprit your windows. In many buildings and homes across the country, the windows provide little to no insulation from the outside world, leading to a surprising amount of heat loss. As much as one quarter of the average heating bill is often a result of poorly constructed or insulated windows. If you have windows that are drafty and cold, the following tips will help you spruce up your windows, keep out the cold and save money on your monthly energy bill: Install high-efficiency windows. Many newer windows on the market contain a variety of t e c h n o l o g i c a l breakthroughs, such as high performance glass and coatings, which offer more than three times the insulating power of older, single pane windows which are currently found in 50 percent of all U.S. homes. Caulk around existing windows. Sealing window frames with caulk will help keep out moisture and stubborn drafts. To see if your existing caulk lines need to be replaced, stick your fingernail into the caulk. If it is soft, the caulk is still functional. If it's hard or brittle, replace with a fresh application. Storm windows. This alternative to increasing your energy efficiency is relatively inexpensive and can improve a window's insulating power by up to 50 percent. In the summertime, storm windows may need to be removed to ensure adequate ventilation in your home. Cellular shades. You may think replacing your windows is the only real option to save energy, but simply adding insulating, cellular window shades can more than triple the insulating power of your existing windows. Additionally, side track window shades provide

even better insulation by tightening up the sides of the shade, creating a more efficient dead air space and insulating layer. Visit www.CellularWindowShad es.com for more information. Shutters. Not only do shutters have great curb appeal and add resale value to your home, they are also great insulators. While installing exterior shutters is best, interior wood shutters also provide a measurable difference and add an elegant, traditional touch to fine furniture in your home.

Leave a More 'Green' Footprint

(NUI) - It's routine for many on an average workday climb out of bed, hop in a car and brave the slow-moving traffic to work without thinking twice. But nixing the drive, and opting for public transportation instead, can be a benefit to the environment. A carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted throughout the full life cycle of a person, product or service. According to a study released by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), when compared to other household actions to limit carbon dioxide, taking public transportation can be more than 10 times greater in reducing harmful greenhouse gases. "Public transportation use should be at the top of the list of ways for households to become greener," said William W. Millar, president of APTA. "Switching to public transit gives a person the opportunity to immediately become part of the solution to help reduce carbon dioxide, a harmful greenhouse gas." And while it is very important to increase green efforts within the home, many indoor changes do not reduce carbon dioxide levels at the rate that using public transportation can. A solo commuter switching to public transportation can reduce their daily carbon dioxide emissions by 20 pounds, which can lessen a household's carbon footprint up to 10 percent annually.

Turn 'Yucky' into 'Yummy' When it Comes to Medicines

(NUI) - For many parents, getting their young children to take medicine for a simple cold can be a problem that can quickly lead to tantrums. For parents doling out lifesaving medicine to help their children fight cancer, that same struggle takes on an even greater importance and level of stress. On the Web site for the National Children's Cancer Society (N.C.C.S.), parents coping with childhood cancer regularly come together through message boards to gain hope, ask for help and vent about the cancer-related issues going on in their lives. A frequent challenge is figuring out how to effectively administer lifesaving cancer medications to children. One parent shared her frustrations about trying to coax her 4-yearold daughter to take her medicine. "She hates the medication liquid or powder form, try dipping a spoon into chocolate syrup, placing the medication on the spoon and then offering it to your child. Create a routine. Choose a specific time and spot in your house where your child receives their medication. With every dose, have them put a checkmark or sticker on a medicine chart set up near the designated area. This is an especially important tip for children fighting long-term illnesses such as cancer. Give them an "out." If your child starts becoming combative during a medication session, allow them to take a short break approximately five minutes to regroup both physically and mentally before trying again.

we have to give her daily," the woman wrote on the Web site, www.NationalChildrensCancerS ociety.org. "She will not swallow the pills. Crushing them tastes awful and to give liquid is almost impossible. Is there a trick?" For parents looking to help their children overcome cancer as well as parents simply trying to ease their child's stuffy nose the following tips will prevent a battle wrought with tears: Offer choices. While taking

the medicine might not be a negotiable task, asking things such as "Would you like apple or grape juice with your medicine?" will give your child a sense of control that will make them more willing to comply. Make the medication taste better. As long as you get the "OK" from your child's doctor, find creative ways to disguise the taste of the medicine. For medication in

Under Pressure? Check Your Tires!

(ARA) - Work and home responsibilities take an enormous amount of time each day. While being under pressure is not healthy for people, its also very bad for your tires. Tires can lose 1 to 2 pounds per square inch (PSI) of pressure each month. When tires are under pressure they become more stressed and can get hot under the collar. Well, under the rim, anyway. Excess stress on people can cause health problems. Excess stress on tires due to low inflation pressure can decrease fuel economy, make tires wear out faster and can affect vehicle safety. Under-inflated tires generate heat that over time can cause tire failure. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that under inflated tires contribute to 660 fatalities and 33,000 injuries each year. Unfortunately, 85 percent of American drivers fail to properly check tire pressure, according to a motorist survey by the Rubber Manufacturers Association. On the bright side, promoting healthy tires is simple and only takes five minutes each month. The key prescription: check the air pressure with a tire gauge. Make sure that you check tires when they are cold -before driving even a mile. This will ensure an accurate reading since tire temperature increases while driving and that causes tire pressure to rise. Next, use the correct tire pressure for your vehicle. Nearly 45 percent of drivers do not know where to find the correct tire pressure for their car. Hint: dont look on the tire! The pressure listed on the tire sidewall is the maximum pressure for the tire. Find a label on the drivers door or check the owners manual. Vehicle manufacturers establish the recommended inflation pressure. Finally, dont forget to check the spare. Seventy percent of drivers never check the inflation pressure in the spare tire. Getting a flat tire is bad enough. A flat spare tire when you need it most just adds insult to injury. To learn more about proper tire care and how to Be Tire Smart, visit www. betiresmart.org.

Replacing an older refrigerator with a new, more efficient model has carbon savings of 335 pounds a year. Weatherizing a home and adjusting the thermostat for heating and cooling saves 2,847 pounds a year. But switching a commute to public transportation saves an incredible 4,800 pounds a year and is one of the most significant actions a household member can take to immediately reduce their carbon footprint. Public transportation also provides benefits beyond carbon dioxide reductions. In an age when preserving our environment is a top priority, taking your foot off of the gas pedal is one way to do just that. For more information, visit www.publictransportation.org.

Fend off the Flu This Season

(NUI) - If you find yourself coming down with a bad case of the sniffles this winter, you aren't the only one. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that each year 35 to 50 million Americans contract some strain of the flu, and children miss approximately 22 million days of school due to symptoms caused by colds and the flu. Many of these diseases are spread from touching infected surfaces and then one's nose, mouth and eyes not just through coughing and sneezing. This year, protect your family and stay healthy with these simple tips that will keep you germ-free: It's an obvious but often overlooked step wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap. According to Dr. Charles "Dr. Germ" Gerba at the University of Arizona, the process of hand washing alone can reduce illness rates by 30 to 50 percent. Know the limitations of sanitizers and disinfectants. Many of these products kill bacteria that lie on the surface but don't provide long-term protection. Many hard surfaces can become recontaminated with bacteria or viruses within seconds of being cleaned. Pathogens that cause respiratory infections, particularly in children, typically survive for up to three days on surfaces, according to a study by Dr. Gerba. Some great products to try this season include: New products like Unelko's non-toxic, biodegradable 1Step Clean & Shield (www.unelko.com), the only surface care product that deepcleans and forms an organic, protective shield on surfaces prevents the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew. This product applies an invisible water, soil and stain repellent barrier that lasts for days, providing one-step cleaning and long-term surface protection. Children's backpacks carry germs into your home and, when thrown on the floor, those germs spread. Try ecofriendly cleaners for your floors. Steam-cleaning products like Shark's Steam Mop (www.SharkSteam Mop.com) turns ordinary tap water into deep-cleaning steam that lifts dirt out of hard surfaces, locking it away in a microfiber pad and outperforming chemical pad mops keeping your home clean and toxin free. More than 150 chemicals found in the average home have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological abnormalities, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

FIND SUCCESS LOSING WINTER WEIGHT

(NUI) - A few weeks after the last home-cooked meal is eaten at the final holiday gathering, many Americans start the new year unhappy with the person they see in the mirror and resolve to lose some unwanted weight. Yet, the majority of those lamenting their weight gain either abandon their quest to shed the pounds or ignore the problem entirely. According to a recent study, 50 percent of those who set a New Year's resolution for themselves abandon it by the end of January and 90 percent call it quits by the end of the year's first quarter. While reaching your goal of getting in better shape is often difficult, it's never impossible. Use the following tips to overcome the uphill battle of sticking with your resolution: Get a good night's sleep. If you're constantly blearyeyed and pawing for the nearest cup of coffee in the morning, you're probably suffering from a constant lack of sleep. Sleep deprivation lowers the body's levels of the hormone leptin, which suppresses appetite. In turn, shirking on sleep actually increases weight gain making it that much more important to get a minimum of seven hours of sleep per night. Bring the gym workout to your home. Getting the convenience of a total gym workout in your home is now easier than ever before, and studies have shown that the more convenient the workout, the more likely you are to commit to a program longterm. Home gyms like HOIST's V Select Series allow the user to utilize 36 different gym configurations, giving the user access to the exercise options they want with minimal floor space required. Live a healthier and stronger life by taking advantage of the flexibility and convenience this in-home system has to offer. For more information or to find a dealer, visit www.hoistfitness.com. Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition. Sure, it's old news, but are you actually adhering to the constant expert advice to eat healthier foods? While new, trendy diets come and go, simply focusing on cutting out bad fats, sugars and salts, and incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet is a simple solution you can stick with. Additionally, focus on small portions when eating out studies have shown that meals at restaurants contain 60 percent more calories than those made at home.

LISTEN UP: GET A HANDLE ON HEARING LOSS

(NUI) - If you're constantly straining to hear a conversation at the office or turning up the volume when watching television, there's a good chance you are one of many Americans with a serious but common problem hearing loss. Losing your hearing can occur for a number of reasons, including frequent exposure to decibel levels that are not safely tolerable for human hearing. But for those who simply lose their hearing slowly as they age a condition known as "presbycusis" the loss of hearing may run in the family and gradually prevent the sufferer from hearing higher frequencies that are found in everyday life. According to the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), hearing loss has become the nation's numberone disability. And the problem, which affects one out of every three people older than 60 and half of those over 85, doesn't seem to be dwindling. In fact, the HLAA has predicted that by the year 2050, the number of hearingimpaired Americans will have surpassed the rate at which the U.S. population is growing making the need for products that assist individuals with hearing loss much more valuable. There are many helpful devices on the market today that can help increase the enjoyment of activities hindered by hearing loss. While it's a common pastime for people of all ages, many older Americans are unsatisfied when trying to enjoy television due to muffled dialog that can make a favorite program unwatchable. To combat this problem, listening devices such as the Original Dialogue Speaker, sold exclusively by firstSTREET, give hearingimpaired Americans an added listening boost when relaxing in front of the TV. Using a specially designed internal amplifier, the Original Dialogue Speaker heightens the dialog level in any television program or movie being watched. By boosting the specific frequency associated with speech, the overall volume can also be kept lower making life easier for others in the room unaffected by hearing problems. For more information on the Original Dialogue Speaker, visit www.firststreetonline.com or call 866-681-7107.

Who Helped Pack Your Parachute?

Continued from page 5. Now, Plumb asks his audience, "Who's packing your parachute?" Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. Plumb also points out that he needed many kinds of parachutes when his plane was shot down over enemy territory - his physical parachute, his mental parachute, his emotional parachute and his spiritual parachute. He called on all these supports before reaching safety. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please or thank you, congratulate someone on something wonderful that's happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. I'm sharing this with you as my way of thanking you for your part in packing my parachute!! Sincerely, D. Michael Burke You're Real Estate Consultant for Life PS: If you'd like a copy of this story to send to a friend, family member or anyone who helps "pack your parachute," just email me at Michael@burkesbeach. com (or call me at 239 777-0473) and I'll email a copy to you.

Craving a Ski Escape?
Check Out an Unexpected Spot

Sunny California
(ARA) - If youre heading west this winter to hit the slopes, you may be following many other ski bums who will be flying straight over the Rocky Mountains and landing in sunny California. The Golden State is home to the most popular destinations for a growing number of skiers this season, according to the Orbitz Insider Indez (www.orbitz.com). California boasts the two most popular spots for skiers and snowboarders for the 2007/2008 season, with Lake Tahoe taking over the number one spot, and Mammoth Lakes, Calif. checking in at number two. Online travel agency Orbitz compiles its Index based on future hotel and vacation package bookings. Worry not Rocky Mountain High! Mountain Time still attracts a huge ski crowd, with six of the top 10 spots on Orbitz list: Park City, Utah; Breckenridge, Colo.; Jackson Hole, Wy.: Steamboat Springs, Colo. And Vail, Colo.; Snowmass, Colo.; Keystone, Colo.; and Winter Park, Colo. For some, mixing passions in a single vacation is the way to go. The Orbitz Insiders say an increasingly popular vacation option combines the best of both worlds -- golf and skiing. For those planning late winter and early spring trips, yes, there are domestic destinations where you can readily do this, including Lake Tahoe, Calif.; Snowbird, Utah and others. For many, to be on the slopes in the morning and the links on the afternoon is as close to paradise as you can get. Although many travelers have already planned winter getaways, its not too late to make reservations. Now is prime time for booking for the spring, industry experts say. Here are some tips for those planning an escape to the mountains: Book as early as possible to find the best rates but also check last-minute deals. Book a vacation package. Combining air and hotel is a great way to save on trip costs. Pack smart. Few can pull off a ski trip without checking bags, so make life easy and only carry on what you need for the flight. Consider lodging in neighboring towns. Staying slope side or ski-in/ski-out is often more expensive. Lodging options nearby with shuttle service to the mountain is a cost-saving option Also, make a checklist of everything youll need. Ski trips require a lot of packing and more take alongs than the usual vacation. A checklist will help ensure you dont forget anything, and save you from having to buy any ski essentials last minute. Not to mention, any time spent in the shops is time taken away from the slopes. But if you dont have skis to take with you on your winter adventure or dont want to take them with you, most resort towns will have plenty of rentals readily available.
