Despite the announcement in December that the United States had been in a recession for the past year, the Naples, Bonita Springs, and Estero real estate market finished out 2008 with a flourish. So far, the upward trend appears to be continuing into 2009. Last year showed phenomenal increases in sales, says Michael Burke, a luxury real estate professional specializing in Naples, Bonita Springs, and Estero area housing. And judging by how busy weve been so far this year, 2009 promises to be more of the same. Although the nations real estate market overall floundered in 2008, Lee and Collier counties in Florida showed
Weve been busier than ever in 2009, Burke says. Were doing more showings, receiving and making more offers, and closing more sales. Even our website is attracting more visitors than before. Many real estate experts and economists are predicting that the national real estate market is close to hitting bottom. But judging by the sales numbers in Naples, Bonita Springs, and Es-

Both sides should come clean: Remember that this situation is as much about the relationship as about money. The decision to help a family member with money problems requires understanding lecturing tends to work not so well. But its right to encourage your offspring to take a frank look at their financial situation and if they are in debt trouble of any kind, they should get help. Its also important that you show confidence that they will make it through this.
But if its a loan: You need to structure it professionally with clear consequences if it goes unpaid. Handled correctly, such a solution can offer benefits for the borrower and lender alike. But theres the potential for incredible downside. Unclear agreements can lead to missed payments or default. If the borrower dies suddenly, the lenders investment may be lost if the agreement isnt structured correctly. A properly executed promissory note is still an obligation of the estate, and may continue to be paid to an heir or other person or entity based on the terms as agreed Work with them on budgeting: Its not going to be enough to solve the immediate problem. Even if you dont use a financial planner to help you both work through the situation, its important to set a clear financial course for your child going forward. They obviously have to have a stake in the planning, but youre going to have to provide guidance. Encourage them to start an emergency fund. Optimally, theyll need to stash away three to six months worth of living expenses, and even if its just a small start, its part of the recovery effort.
Consider a joint talk with a financial planner: A financial planner, such as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER professional, can look at their financial situation and your own and give you both a road map on how to work through your childs money problems and set up better money management techniques for after the crisis.
Walker offers the following five tips to help you prepare your business for sale: 1. Transfer power: Enabling the management team to carry on without you will be a big plus to a purchaser. Build up your management team, and shift sole responsibility away from you. Transfer key personal relationships with suppliers and customers and formalize contracts where possible.

2. Hang on to key employees: To ensure the loyalty of key employees, changes may be needed to incentives and employment terms. Signing employees to employment contracts with confidentiality and/or non-competition clauses may reduce a purchasers risk, and increase the price theyre willing to pay.

3. Clean house: Stay one step ahead of the purchaser and deal with outstanding filings and remittances. Even if it means spending a bit of money to clean the slate, you should settle any legal disputes against the company well ahead of selling.
4. Talk taxes early: Speak to a qualified tax advisor about tax strategies and implications that will affect you personally after a sale or succession to a family member. Some strategies need to be planned years in advance, so start asking questions sooner rather than later. 5. Keep it a secret: Maintaining confidentiality is critical as you prepare to sell. Assemble an external team of advisors to help manage the sale process and reduce the risk of word getting out.

that organ we so often overlook. Also, during the month of March, The Kidney Foundation goes door-to-door in neighborhoods across the country to raise awareness and funds for research and programs to help people living with kidney disease.
(NC) - Four years ago the International Society of Nephrologists (kidney specialists), and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations decided to mobilize the global community to increase awareness of the importance of kidney health. Why? you ask. Well, for starters, do you know what your kidneys do? Do you realize that they help maintain your bodys chemical balance or metabolism, that they produce essential hormones, and clear your blood of waste products that act as toxins? Do you know that while a person can live with just one healthy kidney, if the two stop working, you could die in a matter of hours? Exactly. Moreover, many people do not realize that lifestyle choices such as diet, regular exercise, stress reduction, eliminating smoking or limiting alcohol consumption are crucial to kidney health. And managing other conditions that may lead to kidney disease will also go a long way in keeping kidneys in tip-top shape. Dr. Copland, a nephrologist and chair of The Kidney Foundation of Canadas Public Policy Council notes: High blood pressure is one of the major risk factors for chronic kidney disease. Its important to have it monitored and kept in check. Since 2005, the second Thursday of March has become World Kidney Day, a global reminder to pay attention to
(NUI) - Workaholism has become a social norm. Many people proudly call themselves workaholics, but true workaholism - an uncontrollable compulsion to work - can destroy personal relationships and lead to a lower quality of life. How do you know if youre a workaholic? Workaholics routinely work more than 40 hours a week and take their work to dinner, homes and bed. They neglect personal responsibilities and relationships and can feel anxious when not working. My drug is the juice from constant movement, constant communication and continual achievement - the long list of to-dos and completed tasks at the end of the day, says Darren Hardy, publisher and editorial director of SUCCESS Magazine and admitted workaholic. Its a wonderful high. Despite the thrills, there are many damaging affects. Addiction starts to take over your power, drive your behavior and create a compulsion for continual use, says Hardy. This behavior can take you off course from your major goals; tax your physical, psychological and emotional system; and even damage or destroy relationships. Anyone displaying the characteristics of a workaholic should consider taking steps to overcome this potentially harmful addiction. On his blog, Hardy has created Workaholics Anonymous - A 12-Step Program of Recovery and Personal Transformation for recovering workaholics who are looking to transform their lives. Remodeling Trend
Room
(ARA) - Think you have a crowded house? Maybe youre not alone. Surprising new data from the U. S. Census Bureau finds that many families are making room in their home for parents, followed by siblings and other relatives. From 2000 to 2007, the number of parents who move in with their adult children grew 67 percent to 3.6 million. Even more interesting, the number of parents younger than age 65 in these households increased by 75 percent and those 65 and older rose 62 percent.
Today, many people are looking for costeffective yet environmentally sound remodeling techniques. In their book, Green Remodeling: Changing the World One Room at a Time, authors David Johnston and Kim Master write, Green remodeling actually makes and saves money. And this is not just long-term energy saving costs; the cost to implement green features (first costs) is often less than remodeling by conventional standards. In the long term, green renovations increase the resale value of your home. Living in perfect harmony with your relatives may not be your first choice during tough times, but it could be the most cost-effective. Remodeling or updating your home could make the transition much smoother.
Families dont have to overhaul their entire lifestyles to go natural, said Jen Singer, lifestyle expert, author and founder of Mommasaid.net, an online resource for moms. Instead, you can take small steps that are easy, convenient and affordable. Even small changes can have a big impact on our homes and the world we live in. Singer offers the following five tips to help families live more naturally. Leave it at the door. Make it a household rule to kick
off shoes when entering the home. Preventing outdoor pollutants and loose surface dirt from coming inside can save water and energy because it means less mopping and vacuuming. Conquer cleaning naturally and effectively. Try cleaning your home with natural cleaners, such as the new Natures Source line from SC Johnson. The products are powerful cleaners made with 99-plus percent natural and naturally-derived ingredients. Whats more, the products are affordable and available in many grocery and mass merchandise stores. Pull the plug. Unplug electronics that arent in use. If the phone charger is sticking out of the electrical outlet without a phone on the other end, its still using energy. Encourage other family members to unplug their phone chargers, laptops and handheld game chargers when theyre not in use. Carry a full load. Maximize the efficiency of appliances and conserve water and electricity by operating the washer, dryer and dishwasher with full loads. In some areas, electric companies may offer less expensive nighttime rates, so its possible to save money by running electrical appliances at night. Hang it to dry. In the long run, a dryer does more damage breaking down clothing fibers than the washer. Hanging clean laundry on a line will save energy and that favorite pair of jeans. Using these savvy tips will make it easier to live a more natural lifestyle at home without paying a premium. For more tips to live naturally, visit www.NaturesSourceCleaners.com.
Its important to still provide your pet with routine veterinary care. But ask your vet to prescribe only the most vital vaccinations. You can also visit low-cost clinics for routine check-ups. Contact you local humane society to find low-cost vet clinics or events. Food for Thought:
To ensure your pets health in the long run it is important to consistently feed them a healthy, well-balanced diet. Find an affordable, quality product that your pet enjoys, and avoid the premium products - which do not necessarily deliver more nutrients.
Some pet companies have stepped up to combat the current economic downturn. The 9Lives brand is committed to making lives better by donating a percentage of its sales to animal shelters, and by providing cats with affordable, healthy food.
The mutual benefit that both pet and pet parents enjoy reaches far beyond companionship. Whether you are 8 or 88, studies have proven that owning a pet has substantial developmental and health benefits. Pets thrive on your attention. Basic pet care essentials such as walking, grooming and even petting can provide increased physical activity, and best of all, they are free! (NUI) - When refreshing spring weather begins to roll in, wouldnt you rather be outside enjoying it, rather than inside cleaning? This year, tackle those spring cleaning jobs early so that spring can be a time of relaxation and enjoyment.
Clean your carpets. Carpets can be a major trap for dust and pet hair, not to mention the salt and dried mud that have been tracked in from winter shoes. There are many professional services to choose from, but for those do-ityourselfers, renting or buying a carpet cleaner can save bundles of money. The Oreck Rinse-A-Matic (www.oreck. com) can shampoo, rinse and dry carpeted floors, and, as a bonus, can also rinse, scrub and dry kitchen floors. Say goodbye to mineral stains. Mineral deposits look depressing on windows and shower stalls. And while cleaning the windows is often a warm-weather job, theres no reason to put off cleaning the bathroom. Hard water stains on glass shower doors and windows look unattractive, so remove them with specialized products like CLR (www. jelmar.com), Lime Away or Bring It On Cleaner (www. BringItOnCleaner.com). Some hard water stains will often yield to scrubbing with white vinegar and a nonscratch pad. If you find that vinegar is ineffective, resort to stronger chemicals.
Polish your wooden cabinets. You dont need to replace wooden cabinets when they lose their luster. A thorough cleaning, followed by a moisturizing polish, can make old cabinets look new. The most common method of cleaning cabinetry is with a little Woolite and water. But if you want to restore luster and shine, try a product like Touch of Oranges Wood Cleaner (www.TouchOfOranges.com),
(NC)-Its tempting to cut corners in a down economy, but thats the last thing one should do in the construction of a new house. Owning a home with superior efficiency will pay high dividends for years to come. A green home uses less energy and natural resources, says Todd Blyth at Nudura, the manufacturer of insulated concrete forms. It creates less waste and is healthier and more comfortable for the occupants. Equally important benefits include lower energy bills, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins. As a result, the net cost of owning a sustainable home is comparable to cost of a conventional one. The four key areas to ensure the best human and environmental health are: water efficiency, energy efficiency, material selection, and indoor environmental quality. Heres a useful little checklist as a guideline: Use LEED certified materials: This internationally acclaimed benchmark by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design provides a third-party certification program, setting an international benchmark for the construction and operation of high performance sustainable buildings. Start with concrete, not wood: With concrete walls by Nudura, combined with their ceiling and floor technology, youll get several key green components all in one. The system consists of stay-in-place, interlocking concrete forms. With this Lego-like method (of reinforced concrete sandwiched between two layers of expanded polystyrene foam insulation) the total building envelope stands to be up to nine times stronger, far more fire resistant, and far more sound insulated. Furthermore, this innovation (nudura.com) is designfriendly for architects, much faster for builders, creates less construction waste, and provides defence against toxicity and mold that is so often a associated with traditional wood framed walls. And of equal importance, its a building method that will deliver energy savings of up to 70 percent. Aim for indoor water conservation: Ask about greywater irrigation and rainwater harvesting. Insist on energy efficiency: In addition to a concrete structure, some of the more popular choices for conservation include: an earth sheltered architectural design; installing efficient ducts, lighting and fans; planning for gas or solar hot water, heating and cooling systems. Ask for green materials: Structural choices range from fume-free paints, finishes and adhesives, to sustainable floor coverings, sidings and trim.

Heading up Interstate 26, Edisto Memorial Gardens in Orangeburg is home to more than 4,000 roses and a 2,600-foot boardwalk into the tupelo-cypress wetlands along the North Fork of the Edisto River. Its one of only about two dozen official test gardens in the United States sanctioned by the All-America Rose Selections Inc. Other highlights include Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia, where formal and informal plantings join an impressive stand of old rose varieties and cooling shade garden.
(NC)-COLUMBIA, S.C. - Old-timers will say you havent seen Spring until you see the azaleas in full bloom.
Combined with the nearly as ubiquitous flowering dogwoods and a myriad of other blooming bushes and bulbs, spring seems to explode with color in South Carolina each year, from big city to village to the wildflowers of the upstate mountain forests and meadows.
The azaleas are a particular highlight, and begin blooming in the Lowcountry by early March and peaking across the state, ending in early to mid-April in the Upcountry. Taking a drive around the state, checking out the sights, also is taking a drive through history. For instance, the distinctive butterfly gardens at Middleton Place in Charleston can boast of being the first formal gardens in the English Colonies, forged from marshy woodlands along the banks of the Ashley River around 1740.
Notable public gardens also include Kalmia Gardens at Coker College, where a 60-foot drop in elevation provides for a surprising diversity in plants and wildlife.
Two commercial operations also bear mention. Park Seed in Greenwood is one of the nations largest and oldest mail-order operations and a nice place to visit in the spring. Orchid fans and plant-lovers of all kinds also wouldnt want to miss Carter and Holmes Orchids in Newberry, where 18 greenhouses offer one of the largest lineups of the prized plants in the nation. And last but not least is 9,000-acre Brookgreen Gardens on the coast near Myrtle Beach. Visitors will find the largest collection of outdoor sculpture in the country amid a Lowcountry setting of lush plantings, live oaks and a pontoon boat tour of long-abandoned ancient rice fields. More on these and other garden-oriented locations in South Carolina can be found at www.DiscoverSouthCarolina.com.
Next door is eclectic Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, owned by the same family for more than 325 years and a birthplace of ornamentally grown azaleas and camellias. Nearby, Summerville Azalea Park contains eight picturesque acres of azaleas, wisteria, pines and dogwoods, and is a spring must-see in the historic small town at the upper end of the Ashley River above Charleston.

Event Pizza
Master Dough Recipe Yield: one 20-ounce ball of dough to make one 12-inch Chicago-Style Deep-Dish Pizza 1 package active dry yeast 3/4 cup warm water (105-110 degrees F) 1 teaspoon sugar 1/4 cup corn oil 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 12-inch deep-dish pizza pan or cake pan In a mixing bowl, dissolve the yeast with water and sugar. Add the corn oil and blend. Add the flour and salt and mix thoroughly. If using a stand mixer, mix for 4 minutes at medium speed, until the dough is smooth and pliable. If kneading by hand, knead for 7 to 8 minutes. Turn the dough out of the bowl and knead by hand for two additional minutes. Add olive oil to a deep bowl. Place the dough ball into the bowl and turn it twice to coat it with the oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and a kitchen towel. Let the dough rise for two hours. Do not punch it down. Spread and push the dough ball across the bottom of the pan and up the sides. Pepperoni Deep-Dish Pizza 1 1/2 cups tomatoes, ground 1 teaspoon oregano, dried 1 teaspoon basil, dried 2 tablespoons romano cheese, grated 5 ounces part-skim, low- moisture mozzarella, sliced 5 ounces provolone, sliced 24 pepperoni slices (about 2 ounces) 1. In a mixing bowl, combine the tomatoes, oregano, basil and romano. Set aside. 2. Lay the slices of mozzarella and provolone on top of the dough, overlapping the slices to cover all of the dough. 3. Spread the tomato mixture evenly over the cheese. 4. Dot the top of the tomatoes with the pepperoni. 5. Bake on the middle rack of a preheated 475-degree F oven for 20-25 minutes until crust is golden brown and pulls away from the sides of the pan. 6. Allow the pizza to rest for 3-4 minutes before cutting and serving.

Thoughts to Ponder
If Fed Ex and UPS were to merge, would they call it Fed UP? Why isnt the number 11 pronounced onety-one?
Those who live by the sword get shot by those who dont. The things that come to those who wait will be the things left by those who got there first.
