Learning Competency:

Solve a System of Linear Equation.

Subtask: 1. Solve a system of linear equation by substitution.

2. Solve a system of linear equation by elimination. 3. Solve a system of linear equation by graphing.

A System of Linear Equation is a set or collection of equation that you deal with all together at once. In this lesson, you will learn that the different methods in solving systems of linear equation (substitution, elimination, and graphical method) have the same solution and you will discover which among the methods is easier and applicable in solving systems of linear equation given. This material will help and give you enough activities to find the study of systems of linear equation to be an interesting and successful experience and for you to master the subject matter. There are some activities given to be answered then, you will proceed to enrichment activities and, to find out how far you have learned the topic you will be answering Assessment activity then, to check your work refer to the Answer Key Card. Are you ready? Good luck!

Guide Example
How will you solve the system substitution? y = 4x x+y=5 by

Simply follow the steps in solving the system. Solution: Given:

y = 4x x+y=5 Step 1: To use the substitution method, we solve one of the equations for either x or y. in this case, we chose y = 4x since the coefficient of y is 1. y = 4x Step 2: Substitute the equation obtained in Step 1 to the other equation. The result is an equation with one variable. From Step 1 --------------> y = 4x

Substitution to equation --------------> x + y = 5 x + 4x = 5 Step 3: Solve the equation found in Step 2. x + 4x = 5 5x = 5 x=1 Step 4: To find the corresponding value of the remaining variable, substitute the value found in Step 3 in the equation derived in Step 1. If x = 1, (from step 3) then y = 4x (from step 1) y = 4(1) (substitute the value of x.) y=4 The solution is x = 1 and y = 4 or ( 1, 4 ) Step 5: Check the solution in one of the equations. x+y=5 Equation 2 1+4=5 Substitute the derived 5=5 value of x and y

Solve the system of equation using substitution method like a cross-word puzzle except that numbers replace words. Be sure to express answers in the indicated value of the variables.

ACRO
a. x y = 25 y = 10 b. x + y = 351 x = 120 d. 3x 2y = 18 y = 18 e. x 3y = 54 y = 54 f. x 2y = 9 y = 20 g. 3x + y = -2 x = -33 k. 24x y = -225 x=5

DOW
a. 10x y = -52 x = 30 b. x + y = 35 x =7 c. 3x y = -24 x = 40 d. 2x y = 20 y = 12 h. x 4y = -2 y = 20 i. -5x + y = 24 x = 10 j. x y = 45 y = 15

l. 2x + y = 4 x = -8

Guide Example
Solve the system elimination? -x + 2y = -7 3x - 2y = 9
Step 1: Add the equations to eliminate one of the variables. -x + 2y = -7 3x - 2y = 9 2x = 2 Step 2: Solve the equation obtained in Step 1. 2x = 2 x=2 2 x=1 Step 3: Substitute the value found in Step 2 in either of the given equations to find the value of the remaining variable. -x + 2y = -7 -(1) + 2y = -7 2y = -7 + 1 2y = -6 y = -6 2 y = -3 The value of x is 1 and the value of y is -3. Therefore, the solution for both equations is (1, -3). Step 4: To check, substitute the value of x and y in the two equations Equation 1 -x + 2y = -7 -1 + 2(-3) = -7 -1 6 = -7 -7 = -7 Equation 2 3x 2y = 9 3(1) 2(-3) = 9 3+6=9 9=9

by

Since the values of x and y satisfy the two equations, then the solution of the system is (1, -3).

Substitute the equation obtained in Step 1 to the other equation. The result is an equation with one variable. Solve the equation found in Step 3. To find the corresponding value of the remaining variable, substitute the value found in Step 3 in the equation derived in Step 3. Check the solution in one of the equation.

Steps in Solving Systems of Linear Equation by ELIMINATION Add the equations to eliminate one of the variables. Solve the equation obtained in Step 1. Substitute the value found in step 2 in either of the given equations to find the value of the remaining variables. To check, substitute the value of x & y in the two equations.

Steps in Solving Systems of Linear Equation by GRAPHING Use the x and y-intercepts in each equation.

Plot the points Connect the points Determine the equation of the graph.

DEFINITION OF TERMS Systems of Linear Equations is composed of two or more linear equations. Each equation represents a graph and each pair of equation represents two graphs in the same plane whose intersection is the solution of the systems. Substitution one of the methods in solving systems of linear equations in two variables where the system is converted into a single equation with one variable. Elimination this method is based on the addition property of equality which states that adding equal quantities to both sides of an equation does not change the solution of the equation. x-intercept is the abscissa of a point where the graph passes through the x-axis. It has a coordinates of (x, 0). y-intercept is the ordinate of a point where the graph passes through the y-axis. It has a coordinate of (0,y). Solution it is a point of intersection of the graphs or an ordered pair of a real number (x, y) that satisfies both equations in the system.
