NATIONAL INTERNET BACKBONE

NATIONAL INTERNET BACKBONE OF BSNL

The National Internet Backbone of BSNL consists of 432 Point of Presence (POP) that gives it the capability of transporting IP traffic from every hook and corner of the country. The latest endeavor of BSNL is a world-class multi-gigabit multi-protocol, convergent IP infrastructure which will provide voice, data and video services through the same backbone. In terms of infrastructure for broadband services, this would put India at par with more advanced nations.

NIB PROJECT
NIB-II this will be implemented in the form of four projects:

Project 1 involves building up of Multiplexers backbone. Project 2.1 is for narrow band access. Project 2.2 is for broadband access. Project 3 is to put systems and processes in place to integrate network built in the other projects and provide services like messaging, billing etc.

Services provided in NIB

The services that will be availabl e to customers when NIB-II is in place:

Narrowband and broadband Internet access. Virtual Private Network. Managed OPE. Value Added Services like encryption, firewall an d NAT. Messaging: Plain Vanilla and feature rich. Data Center Services: web hosting and web-collocation. Content based Services: e.g. video multicast, video on demand, interactive gaming.

Internet Backbone
This super fast network spanning the world from one major metropolitan area to another is provided by a handful of national Internet service providers (ISPs). Local ISPs connect to this backbone through routers so that data can be carried though the backbone to its destination. The National Internet Backbone is the national broad based access net work to provide nodes for Internet access throughout the country. The objective of the backbone is to build a country wide network to provide convenient & easily accessible Internet Access points (IAPs) for BSNL Internet Service Providers (ISP) as well as private ISPs so that they can connect their point of presence (POP) to the Internet quickly.

What is backbone ?
Backbone is another term for bus, the main wire that connects nodes. The term is often used to describe the main network connections composing the internet.

ELEMENTS OF NIB-II
SSSS / SSSC BBRAS LAN Switch DSLAM ADSL Modem EMS Sun Server V880. MA5200G. QUIDWAY S8016 & S6506R. SMARTAX MA5300 & MA5105. MT800. iMANAGER N2000 & I2000.

CONNECTIVITY OF NETWORK
LAN quidway switch provides: 1) GE interfaces of which 4 should be SX ports to extend up to 500 meters optical. Rest should extend up to 40 km optical. 2) FE interfaces of which 4 should electrical extend to 100 m. Remaining should extend to 10km optical.

BRAS MA5200G

MA5200G is a Broadband Access Server with enhanced Broadband network technology It interfaces the core router on the network side and layer2 Access equipment (Tier 1 LAN Switch) on the user side. It provides functions of User management, Accounting Control, Address management, Service Control and Security management with carrier class reliability. Two types namely MA5200G-8, MA5200G-4 are proposed for different quantities of access users and switching capacity. The management and control module has 1+1 redundancy capability, can achieve high reliability. Provides high forwarding performance & fle xible service processing capabilities enabling high-speed Internet Access Adopts Network Processors and Large scale ASIC hardware architecture for Higher Performance.

Features of MA5200G

MA5200G provides the following features:

Flexible User Access technologies User Authentication & management Security Guarantee User-based, policy-based Access control QoS guarantee Multicast management Also provide some Accounting information

Types of BRAS

In 23 A-type cities forming the core network, type of BRAS to be installed: A1 CITIES - MA5200G-8 A2 CITIES - MA5200G-4 A3 CITIES - MA5200G-4 A4 CITIES - MA5200G-4

LAN Switches

LAN Switches provide Gigabit Ethernet (GE) interfaces and Fast Ethernet (FE) interfaces for connecting internetworking elements such as BRAS, DSLAMS etc. Tier 1 switches are Gigabit Ethernet Aggregation switches to which B-RAS and Tier 2 LAN switches are connected through GE interfaces. All DSLAMs are aggregated to Tier 2 switches through FE interfaces except 480 ports DSLAMs are aggregated through GE interfaces.

Huawei s S8016 and S6506R are proposed in this Project. S8016 has been proposed for A1, A2 cities as Tier1 LAN Switch . S6506R has been proposed for A3, A4 cities as Tier1 LAN Switch . S6506R has been proposed as Tier2 LAN Switch.

LAN Switch interface requirements

Gigabit Ethernet Interface shall be of type optical. GE Interface shall support up to 40 km. Four GE ports per LAN switch shall be of type SX. FE Interface shall support up to 10km and shall be of type optical. F our FE Interface in each LAN switch shall be of type electrical.
