Thought Provoking Question 1. Information systems support and facilitate the functioning of people to enhance and evolve nursing practice by generating knowledge. This knowledge represents five rights: the right information, accessible by the right people in the right settings, applied the right way at the right time. It is also the struggle to integrate new knowledge and old knowledge to enhance wisdom. If clinicians are inundated with data without the ability to process it, this yields too little wisdom. That is why it is crucial that clinicians have viable information systems at their fingertips to facilitate the acquisition, sharing and utilization of knowledge while maturing wisdom; it is a process of empowerment. If you could only meet 4 of the Rights, which one would you omit and why? Also, provide your rationale for each Right you chose to meet.

Answer: Utilizing clinical information systems, an informatics nurse can help other nurses explore and understand the informational and cognitive foundations of their profession. The ability, to electronically record, integrate and analyze data and information enables nurses to quickly move to the synthesis of nursing knowledge and the development of nursing wisdom, which they can then apply to affect patient care. [1] Indeed, the five Rights of knowledge namely: right information, people, settings, way and time are all essential in the creation of information systems to innovate and improve the nursing practice. However, some circumstances may not allow us to meet some of these given Rights and that we have to choose the most important ones which we believe arethe best for our clients without jeopardizing the quality of nursing service that we deliver. Therefore, prioritization and efficient decision making are one of the keys to an efficacious nursing practice. The Right people is the one that is the most important to be considered because having the right people with sufficient knowledge who can deliver the information effectively, will yield to a successful outcome. Hence, people who are oriented in this concentration are the ones who can fully understand and impart the knowledge contained in it. The second right which should be prioritized should be the Right information. It should be preceded by the right person since the people are the manpower and the information is the machine to be manipulated.Right clinical decisions need right information, such as accessing medical resources online and identifying the right information that is critical in decision making. [2] The third one should be the way. Because it is in this right that lies on how the information will be interpreted and delivered to the clients. Commendable information will be inadequate if it will be delivered in a wrong or less efficient way. It is then

tantamount to saying that this Right will determine on how the client will perceive the information imparted to him/her. The fourth but not the least Right, the Right settings, tells us that nursing informatics requires facilities in order to teach it in the best way one can do. Hence, the people, the information gathered and the way it is delivered will be useless if the gadgets and other usable tools are not available because softwares are seen on computers not on paper and pens. The Right, which I think could be sacrificed if such circumstances come into the way, is the Right time. As nurses, we should always be vigilant of the time because a minute or second could take away our patients life. And it is an undeniable reality that we take too much time in planning for our client in order for them to reach maximum functioning. Nevertheless, in the world of information system, life is made easier for us nurses such as this: You can self-schedule your shifts using information systems. Patient becomes more effective and economical using shift modules designed to handle absences, overtime, staffing levels and cost-effective staffing. This makes for more complete care plans and more comprehensive assessments and evaluation [2]it only tells us that time in this generation could now be utilized usefully through the use of computers in its advancement in informatics, distance learning and multi-tasking.
