Chapter 12: Solid Geometry II Short Notes The net or layout of a solid is the shape drawn onto a piece

of paper or card in the such a way that if you cut out the whole shape, you could fold it up to form the solid shape.

Solid
Cube

Net

Surface Area
A= 6 X ( a X a) = 6a

Cuboid

A= 2( X w) + 2 ( X h)+ 2(w X h) = 2(w+ h+ wh)

Pyramid

A= area of base + Total area of triangle faces

Cylinder

A = 2 ( area of circular base) + Area of curved surface = 2 r + 2 rh

Prism

A= 2 ( area of cross- section ) + total area of rectangular faces

A = Area of ase + area of curved survace = r+rh

4 steps problem solving Example : A cuboid shaped box is 50 cm long , 20 cm wide and 80 cm high. Calculate the total surface area of the box . Step 1 : Understand the problem Given :

80 cm 50 cm 20 cm 50 cm Find : Total surface area Step 2 : Plan Identity pairs of identical faces . Use the formula to calculate the area of the faces .

Step 3 : Solve

Total surface area = 2 ( 50 x 20 + 50 x 80 + 20 x 80 ) cm = 2 ( 1000 + 4000 + 1600) cm = 2 ( 6600) cm = 13200 cm

Step 4 : Check 50 X 20 + 50 X 20 + 50 X 80 + 50 X80 + 20 X 80 + 20 X 80 = 1000+ 1000+ 4000+ 4000 + 1600+ 1600 = 13200 cm
