CHAPTERI
INTRODUCTION

1.1WhatareGammaRayBursts?
FortyyearsagotheVelasatelliteswerelaunchedwiththemissionof
monitoringnucleartestbantreaties.Theydidthisbysearchingforshortflashes
ofgammarayandxrayradiation.Inthismissiontheyweresuccessful;
however,theflashesofradiationobservedwerenotcomingfromtheearths
surface.Instead,onJuly2nd,1967,theVelasatellitesdetectedashort,brightflash
ofgammaradiationwhichhaditsoriginsdeepwithinouterspace(Fig1.1).This
wasthefirstdetectionofthephenomenonnowknownasgammaraybursts
(GRBs).
Duringthefollowingfourdecades,numerousexperimentswerelaunched
withthegoalofobservinggammaraybursts,andacatalogofsomethousandsof
eventswasbuiltup.Eachobservedgammaraybursttimeprofileisinitselfa
fairlysimpleevent,composedofanintenseburstofgammarayslasting

anywherefromafewmstoseveralminutes(Fig1.2).Why,then,hassomuch
timeeffortbeendedicatedtotheirstudy?

Figure1.1Thefirstobservedgammarayburst

Tobeginwith,andmostimportantly,theunderlyingphysicsbehindthese
eventsisnotyetunderstood.SeveraltheorieshavebeenposedastotheGRB
progenitor,butnoonemodeliscurrentlyacceptedascanon.Generalconsensus
isshortGRBsarecausedbycompactobjectmergers,orCOMs,whilelongGRBs
arecausedbysupermassivestarcollapse,calledhypernova.

Figure1.2Gamma-ray burst B910519a,atypicalGRB

Then,thereisthequalificationoftheintenseinthestandardGRB
definitionofshort,intenseburst.Assumingthatthegammaradiationis
emittedisotropically,theamountofenergyreleasedisontheorderof1053ergs.
Thisisequivalenttotheinstantaneousconversionofthemassofthesuninto

observedeventsgrew,thisassumptionwasshowntobefalse.Thedistribution
ofobservedGRBsisuniformacrossthesky,notdenserinthegalacticplane(Fig

spacecraftobservations.ItturnsoutGRBsarethemostdistanteventsobserved

ThisputsGRBsinauniquepositionwithinastronomyandastrophysics.
Theycouldbeapowerfultoolforlookingatthedistant,andthereforeyoung,
universe.Asanexample,thegammaraysfromtheaforementionedGRBwere
producedwhentheuniversewasonly630millionyearsold.Thelightemitted
bythatGRBhasexperiencedeverystageoftheuniversesdevelopment.
Throughgammaraybursts,thehistoryoftheuniverseismadevisible.Gamma
rayburstsarepotentiallyapowerfultoolforastronomyaswell.Astronomers
wanttoknowthreethingsaboutanobservedevent:distance,apparent
brightness,andintrinsicbrightness.Anyonevariablecanbecalculatedfromthe

whattheeventlookslikeatitssource(thereforesheddinglightonthe
underlyingphysicsinvolved)aswellastheeffectsofrelativityonthelight

emittedasittraveledtoearth.Apparentbrightnessiseasy;gleaningtheother
variablesisnotsosimple.

Figure1.3DistributionofBATSEGRBevents[2]

Tofindthedistancetoorinherentbrightnessofanevent,astronomersuse

atypeofrulerknownasastandardcandleorastandardclock.Standardcandles
areeventsthathavethesameintrinsicbrightness,suchastype1Asupernova.
Likewise,standardclockshavethesameduration.Anyobservedtype1A
supernovawillhavethesamebrightnessatsource,andthereforeitsdistanceis
easilycalculatedusingitsobservedbrightness.Knowingthisdistanceallows

inferencestobemadeabouttheeffectsofrelativityonthelightasittraveled,
whichinturnallowscosmologiststostudytheexpansionoftheuniverse.

Unfortunately,thecurrentstandardcandles/clocksareonlybrightenough

tobeobservedatamaximumdistanceofabout3billionlightyears.Littlecan
beknownabsolutelyaboutcosmologyortheuniversesexpansionatgreater
distance.IfGRBscouldbeusedasanewstandard,theastronomicalrulerfor
measuringdistancescouldbeextendedessentiallytotheendsoftheobservable
universe.

Additionally,GRBshappenunderconditionsthatcouldneverbe

recreatedwithinalaboratorysetting.Anyinformationgainedaboutthemcould

Thefieldofgammarayastronomy,asitstandstoday,couldbestbe

turningGRBsintoastandardcandleorclock.Thequestionishowcanthisbe
done?

1.2TheStudyofGammaRayBursts
Unfortunately,thestudyofgammarayburstsisproblematicatbest.Of
thethousandsofGRBtimeprofilescollectedsince1967,notwoprofilesarethe
6

same(Fig1.4).GRBtimeprofilesspanawiderangeofdurationandapparent
brightness.Moreover,eachindividualGRBcanbehighlyvariable,having
multiplepeaksandverylowsignaltonoiseratios.
Also,thedistancetoonlyahandfulofGRBshasbeenmeasured.Hence,
theabsoluteluminositiesofonlyafewGRBsareknown.Havingnowayof
seeingtheGRBatsourcemakessolvingtheprogenitorproblemquitedifficult.
Inturn,thismeanstheunderlyingphysicalmechanismoftheseamazing
explosionsremainsablackbox.
Forexample,itisnotknownwhetherGRBemissionsareisotropicor
jetted.Someevidencepointstojetemission,butthisimpliesonlyafraction
(about1/1000)ofGRBswouldbeobserved.Ontheotherhand,ifGRBemission
wasisotropic,thentheenergyinvolvedbecomesinconceivablymassive,i.e.the
1053ergsexampleinSec1.1.WithoutsomemeansoflocalizingGRBswithin
space,thesequestionswillcontinuetolackadequateanswers.
SomemethodoffindingaGRBsabsoluteluminosityordistancemustbe
found.BecauseanobservedGRBtimeprofilecontainsverylittledirect
information,clevertricksareusedtopulloutintrinsicproperties.Thisisdone
throughstatisticsandtimeprofileparameterization.Parametersaremeasuredor

2.1.1BATSE
TheBurstandTransientSourceExperiment(BATSE)wasoneofthe
experimentscarriedontheComptonGammaRayObservatory,whichflewfrom

countswithenergygreaterthan100keVareconsideredhard.

2.1.2Swift

BATSE,Swiftisnotanacronym;thenameinsteadcomesfromSwiftsabilityto

TheSwiftexperimentwasabletoresolvemuchsofterbursts,andforthisreason,

2.2FittingtheData
Forthe83BATSEevents,thebackgroundgammarayfluxwasfittoa
quadraticfunctionusingTableCurve2D.EachGRBwasbrokendownintohard,
soft,andtotaltimeprofiles,andthebackgroundtoeachprofilewasfitseparately
(Fig2.3).Asacheckofgoodnessoffit,thesumofthehardandsoftbackground

backgroundfit,theratioofthesumofthehardandsoftparameterstothetotal

meaningthehardplussoftbackgroundwasequivalenttothetotalbackground

thatthetotaltimeprofilewasinterchangeablewiththesumofthehardandsoft
timeprofiles.AspublisheddataforSwifteventsisbackgroundsubtracted,no

Forbothdatasets,BATSEandSwift,MADSfunctionswerefittothehard,

Therefore,inordertoaccuratelymeasurehardnessduringtherisephase

2.4HICModeling
AfterfittingMADSfunctionstothedatasetandgeneratingHICs,the

3.1SourceofthePLHIC

UsingcurvemodelingbasedonMADSfunctions,theeffectsoftemporal

differencesbetweenhardandsoftprofilesontheHICwerestudiedindetail.
Therelativerisetime,lagbetweenhardandsoftpeakintensitytimes,relative
decaytime,anddifferenceinpeakintensityofthehardandsofttimeprofiles
wereeachstudiedindividually.Theeffectsofeachparameteronthetheoretical
profilearedetailedbelow.
First,itwasfoundthattherelativepeakamplitudebetweenthehardand
softtimeprofileshadnoeffectontheHIC.Infact,varyingonlytherelative

Variationoftherelativerisetimebetweensoftandhardprofilescreated

Similarly,alagbetweentheintensitypeaktimesforhardandsoftcountsalso

Furthermore,variationofrelativedecaytimescreatesaPLHICwhich

3.2MADSHICAnalysis

3.2.1TheHIC

PreviousresearchhasfoundGRBhardnesstofollowsomegeneraltrends.

Mostnotableistheseparationbetweenlongandshortevents,withshortGRBs
tendingtobeharderthanlongGRBs[8,9].TherealsoexistsatendencyforGRBs
withhighobservedintensitiestobeharder.ForeachGRBwithinthedataset,
themaximumhardnesswasmeasuredandplottedagainstdurationand
observedpeakintensity.Figures3.9and3.10showhardnesscalculatedusing
Equation1(page13)doesnotfollowthesetrends.
BothoftheseoveralltrendsarebasedoffofEpeakmeasuresofhardness.
WhileEquation1doesprovideaccurateandmeaningfulmeasuresofhardness
forhardnessintensitycorrelations,itdoesnotmimicallthebehaviorsofEpeak.
Therefore,theEpeakdoescontaininformationaboutGRBeventsbeyondonlythe

3.2.2PeakLag

Muchlikehardness,thetimelagbetweentheintensitypeaksofhardand

establishedinpreviousresearch[6,8].Second,GRBswithgreaterobserved
intensitiestendtowardsshorterpeaklags(Fig3.12).Again,thisagreeswith
previousresearch[7].Therefore,peaklagmeasurementsbasedonMADSfitsare
assumedtobeaccuratemeasuresofthetrueenergydependentpeaklagtime.

CHAPTERIV
CONCLUSIONS

4.1ThePLHIC

Foralmostthreedecades,theobservedGRBhardnessintensitycorrelation

hasbeenmeasuredandtabulated;however,thenatureofthePLHIChasuntil
nownottrulybeenunderstood.ThePLHICisinfactcausedsimplybytemporal
differencesbetweenthehardandsoftgammarayprofiles.Thefasterfallingoff
ofhardphotonsrelativetosoftgeneratesanobservedPLHICduringtheburst
decayphase.Likewise,aHICcanbeobservedduringtheriseportionoftheGRB
event.Thisisinturnduetodisparaterisetimesbetweenhardandsoftphotons.

Intruth,theHICdoesnotbelieanyunderlyingGRBphysics.Whilesome

theGRBevent.Ontheotherhand,theHICdoesnotmimicallobservables
containedwithinEpeakmeasures.TheEpeakparametermaycontaintrue
informationaboutGRBs,butthehardnessintensitycorrelationdoesnot.The
HICismerelyanobservedproxyfortheenergydependentlagtimes.

54

However,thetimelagsthatgiverisetotheHICseemtobeduetosome

underlyingGRBmechanic.WhiletheHICisjustanartifactofspectral
differences,thetimelagsbetweenhardandsoftphotonspossiblypointtothe
inherentnatureofGRBs.ByusingMADSparametersandHICmodeling,
severalnewtimelagparametershavebeenmeasuredandtestedforcorrelation
totrueGRBproperties.

4.2AStandardLagFunctionforGRBs

Afterperforminganindepthstatisticalanalysis,notruesilverbulletlag

functionforGRBscouldbefound.Thatbeingsaid,severalmeaningfultrends
werediscovered.Moreover,areasonablepredictionforredshiftwasdeveloped
towithinabout65%accuracy.

ThegreatertheoveralllagbetweenhardandsoftphotonswithinaGRB,

thefartherawaythatGRBseemstobeoccurring.Thisisseeningeneraltrends
ofincreasingredshiftwithrise,peak,anddecaylagtimes.Conversely,the
greaterthedifferencebetweenhardandsoftpeakintensities,thelowerthe
redshiftvalueforaGRB.

Furthermore,anymodelforredshiftispotentiallyuseful.Currently,

eventsmustbelocalizedinspaceusingGRBafterglowspectralanalysis.This
processisbothtimeandlaborintensive,andthetimeneededtogleanthe

distancetoaneventcanbeanywherefromdaystoweeks.Theabilityto
approximatethedistancetoaGRB,evenifonlywithin35%error,couldstillhelp
toshortenthistime.

Moreover,thefactthatlagtimesvarydependingonredshiftisitself

interesting.Despitethefactthatlagtimesdontprovideafoolproofstandard
clockmeasurement,theydosignifythathardandsoftlagtimesarephysically
meaningful.SomethingabouttheunderlyingphysicsofGRBscausesthesoft

Thesearchforastandardwithingammarayburstastronomycontinues.
