Honda AND YOU: Owners Story

A MOTHERS LIFE LESSON

FOR THE SOUL

Lai has been an ardent crafter for as long as she could remember. Whether it is quilting, bead work or cross-stitching, she does it all with the dedication and gentle touch of a doting mother. I love gardening and getting busy with my crafts, such as making beaded jewellery, handmade coasters and quilted covers, simply for personal fulfilment. Being a parent to three children, however, became a huge responsibility so she has less time to spend on her hobbies. But Lai has a sentimental vision of being a parent. Whatever you do as a parent, your children are watching. If you take care of your parents, your children will practice the same, she says thoughtfully. I do not ask for much from them. I just want my children to grow up honest and trustworthy, and to raise their own family and appreciate life as a parent.

For someone who had an early taste of the working world as an Assistant Research Officer for seven years, career took a backseat after her twin daughters were born. They were premature at birth and taking care of them was a challenge. Financially, it was also a struggle for both my husband and I but we did all we could to monitor their growth closely and began cultivating strict disciplines, just to ensure that they were always protected because they were so susceptible to illness. Sharing her promise to her family brings a tear to her eye. She does not divulge much but you know it is strength and selflessness that permeates her inner self, making her glow with a gentle beauty. You would not realise that she is actually carrying a permanent scar on her face as a result of a tragic accident 10 years ago.
04 | with dreams

My husband bought me a local sedan for our 13th anniversary and within a week, I reversed by mistake and rolled downhill very quickly. The car fell past a fenced wall and overturned on a lower ground. My earring got caught in the seat and was tearing up the right side of my face, she describes painfully. After the incident, I count my blessings daily for surviving and my husband immediately got me the Honda CR-V, which I much prefer because of its great handling and safety features.

With her three children in universities abroad now, would she be lonely driving in a big car? Hardly, she exclaims with gleaming eyes. I look forward to having some time for myself and for my husband. I can now resume my hobbies and start travelling. We should travel to explore countries far away when we are still able. Life is short, she reminds us.

Honda AND YOU: Dealers Story

Operations here go on smoothly because of good teamwork.

The team of Service Advisors are well-prepared in ensuring that customers expectations are met.

Dealer Owner of Peringgit Sri Motor, Ong Kah Hong, remains modest despite the dealerships tremendous improvement.

Service Manager, Lim Ping Hwa (far left), and Sales Manager, Bernard Lim, with some of their Sales and Service Advisors.

Dealer attributes robust growth to resilience and great teamwork

06 | with dreams

As the owner of a Honda authorised dealer, you know you have made it when you have all the services under one roof. Ong Kah Hong was one of the earliest founders to set up a Honda service centre on the stretch of Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur. What started off as a business to service car owners around the neighbourhood in the 80s has expanded to include a showroom upstairs, more service bays and a Body & Paint centre. Still, Ong is humble about the growth of Peringgit Sri Motor Sdn. Bhd. Most of the customers come here for after sales service. We just keep doing what we are supposed to do, which is to ensure customers are satisfied, and it ultimately helped us to achieve our goals, he shares. While Peringgit has been recording a steady growth in sales, he is not one to rest on his laurels as he aims to reach new customers outside of its district. We set new targets every year and I am thankful for Honda Malaysias support and guidance in improving our competency. Even though we

have been around for a while, competition gets stiffer each year. The business climate is also not easy to predict as no two headwinds are the same. We have to work hard to improve customer and employee retention, he explains. An average of 80 to 90 cars gets serviced here each day. With that volume, everyone in the team needs to be performing efficiently to keep customers happy. A free shuttle service to Mid Valley is also available but for customers who are waiting, they are welcome to use the workstations with complimentary Wi-Fi and enjoy a free flow of snacks and hot beverages. Beyond that, the Service team sends scheduled service reminders to customers and follow up with an after-service call to ensure that customers cars are running optimally. Operations here go on smoothly because of good teamwork, adds Lim Ping Hwa, Service Manager. Our staff turnover is very low and we pride this as our strongest asset. With all our collective efforts, we hope to achieve higher productivity this year.

He believes that when a team member is faced with a difficulty, everyone should work together to resolve it. However, we need to be even more united in 2011 because our performance will be evaluated differently. We score a point in Hondas performance indicator only if a customer grades us as Excellent, which is our biggest challenge, he shares animatedly. For Sales Manager, Bernard Lim, the dealer owner plays a significant role in the operations. Gaining the trust and independence from Ong is something we absolutely appreciate. When it comes to meeting customers expectations, prompt action is crucial. It helps that both Lim and I are given the authority to make the right decisions, whether it is for the employees or customers. This year will be all about enhancing Honda and Peringgits reputation among Malaysians, he emphasizes. Each of us here is committed to play an active role in increasing customer loyalty. The exciting thing here is we have got a great product that is highly valued. We just have to invest our time in customers and employees to move forward.

BREAKTHROUGH

the charging stand for the Fit EV Concept is designed to be convenient and easy to use. Driver simply swipes a card in front of the screen and connects the charger to the vehicle to begin charging. Battery recharging is accomplished using a conventional 120-volt outlet that charges up to 12 hours, or using a 240-volt outlet that charges up to six hours.

It took years of effort and a dedicated team to realise the first Honda electric vehicle, the EV Plus, which rolled out of the factory in 1997. The preservation of the global environment by then had become more pressing. Now, a decade later, the dream of owning an electric vehicle will soon be within reach with the innovative Fit EV.

Honda Fit EV Concept Electric Vehicle

When Honda explored the concept of battery electric vehicles in 1988, the company had begun to envision an age of clean energy in the 21st century although research in alternative energy vehicles was scarce at that time.

Hondas long history with electromotive technologies has enabled us to understand customer requirements, said Takanobu Ito, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. President and CEO. For Honda, an electric vehicle must offer great utility and be fun to drive. The Fit EVs urban commuting capability will be a perfect addition to the full-function mobility of the plug-in hybrid and FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle. Using the same 5-passenger layout found in the Fit/Jazz hatchback, the Fit EV Concept hints strongly at the direction and styling for Hondas upcoming production Fit EV all-electric vehicle, which will be introduced to the U.S. and Japan in 2012. The electric vehicle incorporates a high-density motor derived from the FCX Clarity fuel cell electric vehicle and features a 3-mode electric drive system that is adapted from the CR-Z sport hybrid technology. Adding to the fun driving experience, there is also the interactive coaching system that helps drivers maximize even more battery range. Meanwhile, a pocket-friendly interactive remote linked to the vehicle enable drivers to check the vehicles state of charge or to initiate charging. The Fit EV is part of the Honda Electric Mobility Network, Hondas unique effort in creating clean vehicle technology, renewable energy production and energy management solutions for the benefit of customers and society.

RACING DNA

NSXs legacy
In its first attempt at one of the most ambitious and successful pursuit of technological advancement, Hondas development of a mid-engine sports car sparked an onset of evolution that resulted in the most celebrated sports car it ever built - the NSX.

Retracing the

Evolution of NSX
1983 1989
Honda made its anticipated return to the F1 racing series and embarked heavily on researching midship-engine rear-wheel drive format. By 1985, a new sports car was developed, inspired by an F1 machine and given the code name, NSX. The late Ayrton Senna, famed F1 driver, tested the NSX in Japan and his feedback encouraged the Honda engineers to further enhance the cars rigidity before it was introduced for the road.

1989: the NSX prototype tested on the road

We only have one future and it will be made of our dreams, if we have the courage to challenge convention.
Soichiro Honda

There is no denying that the NSX make heads turn on the road but apart from being just a stunning beauty, the NSX is a symbol of craftsmanship. Through the 15 years in production, it has enjoyed tremendous accolades and remains, till today, the pinnacle of Hondas sporting heritage.

1990 1991
The NSX was introduced in Japan and the U.S. The car was such a hit that buyers had to wait as long as three years to get their dream machine! To equip new NSX owners with sports driving skills, Hondas NSX engineers organised the first owners meeting at Suzuka Circuit, Japan.

When the onset of the NSXs early chapters began in the 1980s, Honda had aimed at creating a new value with a sports car, one that demonstrates superior performance and could bridge its mass production models and F1 cars. To create a sports car for a new era, we should balance human feelings and vehicle performance at higher levels. This was the consensus of Hondas development team, and it was to be the concept for their new sports vehicle. The development was thus given a code name, NS-X, which represented new, sportscar and unknown world, X being the mathematical symbol for an unknown value. The engineers ambition began in earnest and even more so with Hondas famed return to Formula One in 1983, after a 15-year absence. Using technologies cultivated through years of contribution in motorsports, the NSX continued to evolve and succeeds in being one of the first sports cars that combines exhilarating driving performance with superior environmental performance. After years of embarking on the project with iron-clad fortitude, Honda finally introduced the NSX in 1990 as a mid-engine pure sports car with an all-aluminium monocoque body, a worlds first for a production vehicle at that time. The achievement is quite simply a manifestation of Soichiro Hondas inspiring words, We only have one future and it will be made of our dreams, if we have the courage to challenge convention.

1990: the 1st Generation NSX in indy Yellow Pearl

1992 1995
Honda engineers took a giant step forward and introduced the NSX-R, tuned to perform on racing circuits. The NSX also began participating in racing events like the Le Mans 24-hour Grand Prix, Suzuka 1000km and Tokatsu 24-hour race, achieving class victories by 1995. That same year, Honda unveiled the open-top NSX-T.

1992: the NSX-t in Midnight Pearl

1997 2000
The NSX Type S rolled out in 1997 with stiffer suspension settings and a lighter body. Meanwhile, the NSX made its exciting debut at the Japan GT Championship, clinching its first victory in 1998 and first Championship win in 2000, a memorable honour in its 10th anniversary.

the NSX-Gt has emerged victorious in various Japan Gt Championships

2001 2005
to signal its exit from the Super Gt 2009 Series, the NSXs bid farewell in a finale parade at twin Ring Motegi, Japan.

Hondas ongoing pursuit of the challenging spirit reached new heights when the NSX-R was reintroduced as a pure sports model to deliver even greater performance than its predecessor while the NSX received further refinements, such as more advanced aerodynamics and fixed mount headlights. Even after production of the NSX halted in 2005, Honda continued to foster its racing spirit in the Super GT Championship with the NSX-GT.

The Insight Generation: A New Way of Thinking

Since the 1970s, Honda has been pioneering the development of lowemissions, high-fuel efficiency vehicles. The first generation Insight was launched in 1999 to meet technological challenges and since then, Hondas ongoing pursuit in advanced technology has led to further developments of next-generation hybrid technologies. The All-New Insight, introduced recently by Honda Malaysia, pioneers a new era of affordability of hybrid vehicles, creating a new market value for compact hatchback entry hybrid vehicles. Its sharp wedgeshaped body ends with an aero tail, sparking off an athletic motion that is inspired by the Aero Athlete design concept. Overall, it conjures an image of poised elegance, one that is further enhanced by its muscular, well-defined bodylines. The interior finishing inside is just as stylish while providing superior cabin comfort to both front and rear passengers. Compared with the previous generations technology, the roomier interior is made possible thanks to an improved Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system that incorporates an Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) that is 19% smaller and 28% lighter, now placed beneath the rear cargo area. This allows you to enjoy more space when the 60:40 seats are folded to a full flat seat, while the cargo accommodates up to 3 golf bags neatly. In addition to its unique touches to make every day driving more fun and practical, the All-New Insight helps drivers realise its full potential in both performance and fuel economy. You are bound to be more a more attentive driver with the Eco Assist which incorporates various

functions that helps you improve your mileage. The ECON button harmonises a range of controls to help you save more energy and fuel while the speedometer changes colour from blue to green, immediately showing you if you are driving fuel efficiently. It would not be too long before you start changing your driving habits, especially when you are evaluated by the Eco Guide, Eco Score and Energy Flow Display which provides feedback on your driving cycles in the multi-information display all of which makes for an intuitive and exciting drive. The All-New Insight is aimed at making environmentally-responsible driving more affordable and accessible to everyone. Visit your nearest Honda authorised dealer and ask for a test drive to fully assess its ride quality and advanced eco functions.

The 60:40 seats are folded to a full flat seat which is made possible by the more compact and lighter Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) placed under the rear cargo area.

Honda MALAYSIA NEWS

Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, greeting the dealers for the first time as the new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia.

Dealers poised for growth as they Take the Lead

It may not be the Golden Globes but the annual National Dealers Convention is one event that all Honda authorised dealers come together in high spirits to celebrate their achievements in an award ceremony hosted by Honda Malaysia while sharing the companys direction and targets for 2011.
This years convention saw many dealer representatives excited at the new products in Honda Malaysias pipeline and left feeling empowered to Take the Lead, the inspiring theme for dealers moving forward into 2011. Among the awards given out that night includes Best Dealer by region and the main award, Dealer of the Year which went to Macinda Auto Sdn. Bhd. in Pahang. Additional awards created this year was the Best Dealer Improvement which caught those who won by surprise. For Formula Venture Sdn. Bhd. from the Northern Region who was named the Champion in the Best Dealer Improvement, their priority was improving teamwork among employees to create a friendlier environment within the dealership. One of our biggest improvements was increasing customer satisfaction. I believe this is a result of our emphasis in employee welfare and encouraging an open communication to help one another resolve issues quickly, says Ooi Wei Ming, Sales Manager of Formula Venture.

Given the economic slowdown in recent years, the dealers have been braving countless challenges and Tan Teng Liang, owner of Syarikat Tan Eng Ann from Terengganu, 1st Runner Up for Best Dealer Improvement, is one dealer to admit that they were struggling with poor performance. There was lack of focus and initiative, so employees were not motivated to do their best. With lots of support from Honda Malaysia, we managed to realign our targets and improve ourselves and we are very thankful for that, Tan relates emotionally. Winning the 2nd Runner Up for Best Dealer Improvement is like a torch to the finish line for Peringgit Sri Motor, comments owner Ong Kah Hong. We are still shocked at winning but it is

a good lesson for us. Now we are confident of having the right perspective and staying on track, he says. We worked hard to maintain our resilience although it has been a tough year. We did not have enough cars to meet customers demands and had to watch helplessly as they purchase from other places. Without a doubt, their achievements did not come easily. The Best Dealer Improvement Award will not just empower others to take the lead but it essentially sets the precedent on how customers expectations are managed, regardless of the state of economy. The dealers proactive efforts in enhancing customers experience at the dealership will certainly lead them to reap hefty rewards at the end of this cautious financial climate.

3 dealers were awarded the Best Improvement Dealer Award for showing tremendous improvement on Overall Customer Satisfaction in Sales and After Sales compared to the previous year. Clockwise from left: 1. Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, and En. Rohime Shafie, President and Chief Operating Officer, sharing a light-hearted moment applauding the dealers at the award ceremony. 2. Formula Venture receiving the Best Improvement Dealer. (From Left) Vice President of Honda Malaysia, Mr Yuji Matsuzaki, Formula Venture Sales Manager, Mr. Ooi Weei Ming, Dealer Owner of Formula Venture, Ms. Connie Ng Shaik Ching, Service Manager, Mr. Teoh Chee Soon. 3. The dealer representatives share their enthusiasm as they listen intently to the exciting line-up of new models that will be introduced by Honda Malaysia this year.
