Cant wait to get back to college! Name the speaker. Well this is not a question for any prose comprehension passage, but the words spoken by almost all TSMites who are away for internship. Many have started missing their friends, classes; hostel and some even miss the hostel food! (Please note none of us are looking forward for the viva, exams and all those things which require us to think hard and work harder.) Though physically we are all far away from each other, we keep ourselves in touch and connected, thanks mainly to FB. Of course there are many who update everything in FB (they just left brushing teeth, bathing and other such mundane stuffs.) Two more weeks and mission interns would be completed successfully!!

Live this moment, cherish every second of what you do cozYesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift....that is why it is called Present, Master Oogway from Kung Fu Panda

The Young Icon

This is an inspiring tale of 31year old young entrepreneur Sarath Babu, CEO of Foodking Private Ltd who turned the attention of millions of people by contesting as an independent candidate in the South Chennai constituency during Lok Sabha election 2009.

Sarath Babu was born in a slum located at Madipakkam, a suburb of Chennai. His family of five young children was supported by his relentlessly hardworking mother Deeparani. She worked in a school for a salary of just Rs.30/month. She made just one rupee a day for six people. She also did other jobs like making idlies in the morning which Sarath used to sell before going to school everyday. As Sarath was determined that her mothers hard work should not go in vain, he excelled in studies from early age and secured admission in the prestigious Birla Institute of Technology and Science (Pilani). After completing his graduation, he worked for three years in Polaris. It was during this time he came across a report that stated 30% of Indians are under the poverty line. This was an eye opener for Sarath to become an entrepreneur. With a strong desire to pursue his dream he cleared CAT and got admission in IIM-A. Upon completion of his course, instead of taking up lucrative jobs, he decided to become an entrepreneur and provide opportunities to as many people as possible. He started his venture "Foodking Catering Services Pvt Ltd" with a meager capital. He entered into this industry because of low investment, high turnover and he says serving someone food is an extremely satisfactory feeling. Today his food business spans more than six locations with Rs.10 crore turnover. Sarath is also an active social worker. His vision was to achieve Hunger free India. He decided to take part in active politics with a mission to be a part of a cleaner system and contested as an independent candidate in South Chennai constituency during Lok Sabha Elections 2009 and won 15,000 votes despite being a newbie. He later joined a regional

political party for better reach but quit the party later when his ideology did not match with the party's .In 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly election, he contested as an Independent candidate from the Velachery constituency. But he lost the elections and garnered 7472 votes. He has vowed to stay in politics and fight against injustices and to Hunger free India. - Elanthalir

From Temple City 2 Pilgrimage City

It was half past eight. I was looking for my glares which I had misplaced somewhere in my shelf. My mother was giving me all possible stern looks to silently remind me that I was getting late for my 9:15 bus to Chennai. She has all the rights; after all I was lazing around, eating, watching TV & sleeping like a snail for the whole two weeks when my other friends were sweating out at their interns. Alas, I found that I had to rush to 3 rd stop to catch Periyar bus. I had mixed emotions when I was leaving my den. One side, I was extremely happy to be back on my own and experience professional life once more and another that I will be away from my loved ones for seven weeks. I had a bumpy last seat ride to Chennai and that night I had to cast a special role of a Cupid for my friend _____ and then fell asleep by the time the bus crossed Virudhuchalam. Chennai was my stopover point. I rested for a while at my cousins place and ate bachelor cooked food. Thankfully nothing happened! In the evening I caught my train to Kacheguda. My intern partner made a last minute boarding. This is my first visit to Hyderabad. The initial few hours we went through the usual hardship of finding a neat guest house. We finally found a comfy place in Hitch City some 12kms from my office.

Hyderabad is kind of weird to me. I have never seen so many cars in my life. Cars, buses, SUVs and bikes ply nonstop. If you want to cross a road you should better wait for a stop signal in a traffic post or else run blindly like I did. Hyderabad seemed super cosmopolitan to me. Being a twin city its huge in size. You get to see almost all kinds of people there. From north eastern spikes to Punjabi whities, from sweet Guajaratis to talkative Tamilians. To my relief, Hindi is spoken by many. Almost every brand in this world has its presence in Hyderabad. The Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills has the maximum penetration of malls, showrooms. Hyderabad has excellent bus system. You can roam around Hyderabad almost anywhere. Though autos are popular, no one uses meter fare system, which is kind of down side. And they cram people in the name of Share fare which is also bad considering Hyderabads image. The very first day of my intern, we left office early and visited Charminar. Took few snaps (thats why we went there!!!) had some pastry and local delicacies and returned. The next day we went to a Hindi picture after a very long gap. Ready was a perfect masala film far better than that skinnys Tamil version. I got my project title and deliverables decided with my project guide and he informed me that my project location was in Nashik. Wait a minute, did anyone say Nashik. OMG! Its Madhushrees stronghold. Since my stay in Hyderabad was abruptly interrupted with these changes, I planned with my intern partner and hostel roommate (a.k.a. motti) to go on a city tour. We booked our tickets for Sunday night. Hyderabad city has a wonderful collection of tourist places, from grand palaces to vast museums. From giant Buddha statue to wild zoo. Hyderabad tourism is unspoiled. You can hardly find tourists being harassed by people who pretend to be guides or hardly see tourists guarding their purses much more than children. Is Madurai listening?

The visits included Birla Mandir, Hussain Zagar Lake, Nizam Museum, Chowmahal Palace, Nehru Zoological Park, Salarjung Museum (we missed the musical clock show by a whisker), Golconda fort. Golconda fort tested our guts and our cardio capability to its maximum extent. I hope you have gone through some of my FB photos. For info on these places visit Wikipedia. I had to bid adieu to Pearl City and start my journey towards Nashik. Nashik! I have never ever been close to any place that starts with the letter N. I didnt even know if Nashik was a hill city or a coastal town or an industrial town or a growing metropolis. Madhushree coordinated with her father to help me in settling for the initial few days. There was so much warmth in their care that I felt I was in my home. At Nashik I resumed my project work which involved developing a financial model for a new business in this region. Work was kind of new to me. Without Excel 2007 I think I would have been doomed with number arithmetic overload. Nashik surprised me each time I ventured outside. The first thing I noticed was that IT WAS BIGGER THAN MADURAI! Highly industrialized. It has wide roads, green landscapes, cool climate, sparse traffic and almost zero pollution. I took a weekend off and visited my uncles place in Thane to be with my cousins and have a small reunion with my reliance friends. Before returning to Nashik, I had a quick meeting with the GM to have his inputs regarding the project. After returning, Madhushrees father arranged my stay with few Tamil bachelors in Nashik. I socialized with them quickly and was happy to know that I was the youngest among them! Nashik has umpteen numbers of temples. Though the temples are not large like in South India, people still have to go through long queues to have darshan. I went to Nashik Darshan that weekend to roam around Nashik. Covered Pandavleni caves, Money museum, Someshwer Mandir, Trimbakeshwar Mandir, Tapovan and Science Museum. I still have two forts, planetarium, film museum, wine museum, etc. etc. to visit.

So much has happened in these three weeks; I had drifted more than 2000kms, learnt a lot about financial modelling and made few new friends. But I have started to miss my friends, college, hostel (even hostel food!), home, parents, my aquarium fishes; my relatives and ______ (fill up whatever you want). I guess this intern is a testing phase for us to make us realise what is coming in one year time or just a transition period. Whatever it is, MBA has changed my life and these 24 months will stay in my memory forever. See you all on July 15th after I return home. Tata. - Sriram Bathe

BEITRAG: SAM WALTON MADE IN AMERICA By Sam Walton with John Huey
Sam Walton: Made in America is an inspiring autobiography of Sam Walton. He shares how he started Wal-Mart, grown it and how he built an empire that changed the way retailing worked in the world. Sam Waltons passion leaps off the pages. His wife Helens father L.S. Robson influenced Sam and he admired his success and said to himself Maybe I will be a successful as he is someday. Sam learned to value a dollar while he sold magazine subscriptions, probably as young as seven years old, later on which helped to pass the benefit to the customers. Sam believed that when every time Wal-Mart spends one dollar foolishly, it comes right out of the customers pockets and every time when they save a dollar, that puts his business one more step ahead of the competition. After leaving the military at 27 years of age Sam Walton started his Franchisee, Ben Franklin store at Newport that was really the beginning of WalMarts success-story. During his Franchisee Sam learnt lot of strategies regarding merchandising, pricing, discounting, promotion etc. He was relentless in search for better ideas and learned from his competitors by spending much time in their stores, In 1962(44 years) he opened his first Wal-Mart store and like most other overnight success, it was about 20 years in making. By 1968, he had 14 variety stores and 13 WalMarts. Later he was expanding vigorously by 50 stores every year. He was probably 10 years ahead of most other retailers in scouting locations from the air, and got a lot of great ones that way .Every Saturday morning at 7.30 he held meeting to resolve important business problems. Walton believed that secret of successful retailing was to focus on something that customers want and then deliver it. Walton also shares his 10 RULES for building a business: Commit to your business, Share your profits with associates, Motivate your partners, Communicate everything to

partners, Appreciate everything, Celebrate your success, Listen to everyone in company, Exceed your customers expectations, Control your expenses better than your competitors and Swim to upstream. A guide to build a RETAIL EMPIRE.... Mr. Walton is sure to propel you as a Merchant King...!!!! - Niranjana

OM! Transition from Class to WareHOUSE

Balaji Sirs dedicated audio-visual lectures came to my help, when my inquisitive questions at the very sight of gigantic machines, put me into a trap. There were days when I thought, these Material Handling Equipments are over with the Ford, GE Videos. Yup! Working with Redington (India) Limited, Chennai gave me an opportunity to work with a PC and also visit the 7.75 Lacs Sq.Ft Warehouse. Redington (India) Limited is an End to end Supply Chain Management Company, which has recently tried its hands on Third Party Logistics. As a part of the Interns, I had to visit a fully equipped facility at Gummidipoondie. The Warehouse @ Automated Distribution Centre has 9800 Pallets, 13000 Shelving Locations and Very Narrow Aisles. At the very sight of these MHEs, questions flowed which let me into a trap. The Warehouse Manager asked me to recall my knowledge of Operations Management (Oops! Bits and Pieces of what I overheard hit my brain) I had to travel at 5 am by the sans-people buses (Blue moon Phenomenon at Chennai though!) to Gummidipoondie, which is in the Andhra Border. These tiresome 5 hrs travel

was a splendid link of what I learnt in TSM classrooms. Knowledge Acqisition in the middle of MHEs, thousands of IT and Non IT Products, Apparels, Personal Care products through Men in Blue was a great experience. The labors working with the MHEs, adding value to the services Kitting, Packing, Labelling, Stikering (I tried my hands on everything). Its always unbelievable to see, what we learnt in the Through Night studies! So lets link the dedicated lectures, the ground work we did for the Presentations, the pages we flipped the night before the exams, the hints we shared till the last minute of the exam with this Hands-on Training. Thats where learning is. Cheers!!!

Kung fu panda 2 . aka kungumapoo bonda

Who am I? Kung Fu Panda 2 is about a panda with an identity crisis. Po, our hero (voiced by Jack Black), has mastered the art of kung fu, but when his father (a goose) reveals he isn't POs real father, Po begins to wonder who he truly is. All the while Po has dreams of what he believes to be his real parents, and a peacock that haunts the darkness in the midst of flames.

The story-line is a bit predictable. Prophecies, flash-backs and avenging the death of murdered parents are a bit old-school. However, the screenplay ensures that you do not get bored with the predictability. The comedy keeps flowing in at a steady pace. Timing is the keyword here, both in terms of the script and acting. Special effects are good with a nice little 3D touch. What truly overwhelm you are the performances of the actors, just like it was in the first instalment. Jack Black is awesome. Yes there is no fee for awesomeness. Everybody else is excellent. Not a single character goes wasted. All points considered... it's a nice entertainer, rib-tickling, energizing flick that brings out the inner child in you especially the voice of childhood PO. -Vignesh Kumar

INTERN DIARY
A good organization, two months to be at home and mom cooked meals. That is all I was looking forward to before starting my internship (well not necessarily in that order). With a little help from my parents I was able to get my internship at one of Indias leading asset financing company. On the first day the HR introduce me to the VP of the Leasing division. I thought he would leave after asking a few basic questions. But I was in for a surprise when he interviewed for almost half an hour (he quizzed me on company law, financial management, etc). My organization guide, the Manager of leasing was away on vacation, so I spent the first week pouring over books on leasing and taking down notes. Once he came back, he took me through the companys business and cleared all my doubts but informed me that no data would be provided (all very confidential so I had to make do with the annual report). After leasing I moved on to the Deposits business of the company. There I was asked to read up on all the terms and conditions. I even had a written test and the deposits manager and I did a role play!! He played different types of customers (a senior citizen, a government employee, an illiterate, etc) and I played the staffs role by attending to the customer and explaining to them the various schemes that would suit each of them. It was very interesting! Now, I have started my work at the Hire Purchase Division. The Senior Manager is very keen on teaching, so to give his undivided attention, he takes classes form morning 7.30 am to 9.00am, before his office work starts. Sir was kind enough to give me data as I had decided to do my project on the HP business of the company. And for that he sent me to the Car Division to get the data. There the staffs were jovial and very friendly. It was like being in a huge joint family. Everyone from the Senior Managers to the clerical staff (even the watchmen) was very friendly, helpful and made me feel comfortable from day one. Still two more weeks to go, hope to make the most of it! - Sweta
