TheShaileshJ.Mehta,SchoolofManagementoffersa2yearMasterofManagementprogrammeandalso a doctoral programme. The School of Management also conducts a wide range of courses for the UndergraduateandPostgraduateProgrammes. TheDIITProgramme(PostGraduateDiplomaofIIT)isofferedthroughDistanceEducationmode. The Institute on an average admits 882 candidates for the Undergraduate programmes and 1548 candidatesfordifferentPh.D/Postgraduateprogrammeseveryyear.StudentsfromBangladesh,Egypt, Ethiopia,Fiji,Iran,Iraq,Jordan,Mauritius,Malaysia,Nepal,Palestine,SriLanka,VietnamandYemenare also undergoing training in various programmes. In addition to these academic programmes, the ContinuingEducationProgramme(CEPCell)organizesshort,intensivecoursesinspecializedtopicsboth forpracticingengineersaswellasforteachersfromengineeringcolleges;andalsoconductseminarand conferences on current scientific and technological developments. Further, under Quality Improvement programme(QIP),teachersfromvariousengineeringcollegesalsojoinInstituteforthepostgraduateand doctoralprogrammes.

2)RESEARCHFACILITIES
AllthedepartmentsoftheInstitutehavewellequippedresearchlaboratoriesandworkshopfacilities.In addition, there are a number of central facilities, which include Computer Centre, Central Library, Workshop,XeroxandPhotographySections.TheCentralLibraryhasaverylargecollectionofbooks,back volumesofperiodicals,standardspecificationsandotherliterature.TheLibraryhasnowmorethan3lakhs booksandvolumesandsubscribestoover1500currentjournalsinScience,Engineering,Humanitiesand SocialSciences. The Centre of Studies in Resources Engineering (CSRE) established by the Department of Education, MinistryofHumanResourcesDevelopment,Govt.ofIndia,offersM.Tech.ProgrammeinNaturalResources Engineering. The CSRE is concerned with the area of Remote Sensing pertaining to natural resources exploration,exploitationandmanagement. TheCentreforResearchinNanoTechnology&Science(CRNTS),iswellequippedforpursuingresearchin nanotechnology.AlmostallsophisticatedtoolsrequiredforNanotechnologyresearcharehousedhere. TheCenterforEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering(CESE)fundedbytheDepartmentofEducation, Govt. of India, is concerned with air and water quality management, Computer Added Design for wastewaterengineeringsystems,lowwastetechniques,etc. TheDepartmentofScienceandTechnology(DST),DefenseResearch&DevelopmentOrganization(DRDO) andMinistryofHumanResourcesDevelopment(MHRD)ofGovernmentofIndia,hassponsoredthesetting ofaNationalGeotechnicalCentrifugeFacility(NGCF)tofacilitateresearchinfrontierareas. TheCentreforTechnologyAlternativesforRuralAreas(CTARA)isconcernedwithdevelopment,transfer andimpactassessmentoftechnologyinthecontextofsocioeconomicdevelopmentofasmallregion.To this end, the centre offers courses (coupled with field work) to impart necessary perspectives and quantitativeskills. TheIndustrialDesignCentreestablishedin1969,hasfollowedanintegratedandinterdisciplinaryapproach towards design education. The centre over the past years has experimented with different methods in designeducationtodevelopaflexiblestructuretosuittheneedsofstudents. Schools in Cryogenics, Lasers and Laser Systems, Offshore Engineering and Management have special facilitiesintheseareasofresearchwork.NewfacilitiesundertheThrustAreaProgrammesinthefieldslike Microelectronics,MicroprocessorApplications,IntelligentSystems,Robotics,CAD/CAM,RemoteSensing, Telematics,etc.havebeencreated. Centre for Aerospace Systems Design & Engineering (CASDE) and Centre for Formal Design and VerificationofSoftware(CFDVS)havebeenestablishedrecently. TheInstitutehasmanyresearchcollaborationswithleadinguniversitiesinUSA,Europe,Japan,andother Eastcountries.Aspartofthesecollaborations,thepostgraduatestudentsgetopportunitiestocarryout jointresearchprojectswithfacultyandstudentsfromtheseuniversities.

TheCentreforDistanceEngineeringEducationProgramme(CDEEP)wasstartedbytheIndianInstituteof Technology(IIT)Bombaywiththeexpressaimofprovidinghighqualitydistanceeducationinengineering andsciencetoalargenumberofparticipantsthroughoutthecountryandabroad.CDEEPwouldliketo sharetheexpertiseofIITBombayfacultywithstudentsandworkingprofessionalseverywhere.Thecourses offeredthroughdistanceeducationaretheverysameonesthataretakenbyIITBombaystudents.Toreach asmanylearnersaspossible,CDEEPisusingdifferentmediumsandvarioustechnologies. Approximately7to10M.Tech.projectswillbetakenupeveryyearincollaborationwithGermanAcademic ExchangeService(DAAD)wherein studentsworkontheirprojectsinreputedGermanUniversitieslike Aachen,Berlin,Darmstadt,Karlsruhe,StuttgartandDresden. The location of IIT Bombay in close proximity to several leading R & D Centers and major industrial establishmentsoffersexcellentopportunitiestointeractwiththemandplansomeofresearchprogrammes in collaboration with them. The Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) coordinates collaborativeprojectswithindustryandotherresearchorganizationssuchasBARC,TIFRandCSIR.The Instituteisactivelycollaboratingwithseveralorganizationsofothercountriesonabilateralbasis. TheComputerCentreofIITBombayprovideshighendcomputingfacilitiestotheInstitute.Ithasseveral highperformancecomputingmachines,whichincludea4CPUDigitalmachine,HPsKclassmachine,SGI OctaneandseveralSUNservers.Studentsareprovidedemailaccessthroughaclusterof10JclassHP computers.TheComputerCentreisalevel3CentreforthenationalcomputingfacilitiesundertheICOSER projectoftheDepartmentofScienceandTechnologysTIFAC. TheentireacademicareaoftheInstituteaswellasitshostelsareconnectedtotheInstitutesbackbonebya 10MbpsopticalfiberlinkconnectedtoanATMswitchthroughseveralfastethernetswitches.TheInstitute backboneislinkedtoa2MbpsInternetlinkthrougharadiomodem.Inaddition,therearetwolower capacityInternetlinks,eachof64kbps.EachstudenthostelhasacomputerroomwithseveralPCs,which candirectlyaccessanyserverintheInstitutethroughtheInternetlink.

3)STUDENTSAMENITIES
Instituteisfullyresidentialandhas14hostelsforstudents.Eachhostelisanindependententitywithits own mess facilities, recreation areas, etc. However students may be permitted to have their own arrangementsforaccommodationoutsidecampus. ExtracurricularactivitiesareprovidedbytheStudentsGymkhana.Theseactivitiesincludesports,cultural programmes,socialserviceandtheNCC.VariousclubsoftheGymkhanaencourageindividualtalentsof students in hobbies such as painting, modeling, music, photography, aeromodelling and fabrication of electronicdevices.Aswimmingpoolisanadditionalfacility.AwellplannedstudentActivitiesCentreis functioning.

4)Ph.D.PROGRAMME
Asaresultofthesoundresearchbaseandextensiveinfrastructuralfacilitiesavailable,theInstituteoffers Ph.D.programmeinawiderangeofareasinEngineering,Science&HumanitiesandSocialSciences.The broad objectives of the Ph.D. programme is not only to keep pace with the expanding frontiers of knowledgebutalsotoprovideresearchtrainingrelevanttothepresentsocialandeconomicobjectivesof thecountry. TheacademicprogrammeleadingtothePh.D.degreeisbroadbasedandinvolvesaminimumcoursecredit requirementandresearchthesis.TheInstitutealsoencouragesresearchininterdisciplinaryareasthrougha system of joint supervision and interdepartmental group activities. The presence of a strong research orientedfacultyprovidesexcellentopportunitiesforsuchprogramme.TheInstituteundertakes sponsoredresearchanddevelopmentprojectsfromindustrialandotherorganizationsinpublicaswellas privatesector. 7)ADMISSIONPROCEDURE
7.1 Admission is offered on the basis of an interview held usually a month before the commencement of the semester for which admission is sought. The interview may be supplementedbyawrittentest,ifnecessary. Regular candidates called for the written Test/Interview under Teaching Assistantship (TA)categorywillonlybepaidtoandfrosinglesecondclassrailwayfarebytheshortest routefromtheirplaceofresidencetotheInstitute.Theyhavetoproduceevidence(Original/ PhotocopyofRailwayTicket)insupportoftheirclaimonly foronediscipline. NoothercategoriesofcandidatesareeligibleforTravelingAllowance.

7.2AdmissionofExternalcandidate(Sponsored)(EX):
The candidates desirous of pursuing Ph.D. programme while in employment should apply for admissionasexternalcandidates.Theseapplicationsshouldbemadeatthesametimeprescribedin the advertisement for regular candidates. The minimum qualifications and other eligibility criterionforadmissionarethesameasforregularfulltimestudents.Itshouldbenotedthat thePh.D.programmeofthisInstitutewillbethesameforboth,foraregular(TA)studentaswellas foranexternalcandidate.However,thefollowingadditionalconditionsaretobenoted/fulfilledby theexternalcandidates. 7.2.1TheInstitutewilldecidethecompetenceofthesecandidatesalongwiththeregularcandidates.

These meetings could also be arrangedduringthestayofthecandidateasmentionedin7.2.3above. 7.2.5 ThePh.D.registrationofanexternalcandidatewouldbereviewedattheendofeachyearfromthe dateofregistrationintermsofhisprogressincourses/seminars/approvedresearchprogramme byaResearchProgressCommittee(RPC)nominatedbytheconcernedDepartmentpostgraduate Committee (DPGC)/Interdisciplinary Programme Committee (IDPC) / Postgraduate Committee (PGC)forSchoolandCentre. 7.2.6 The facilities of external registration are for those who are working in wellequipped scientific institutions, laboratories, R&D establishments and industrial organizations engaged in research basedactivities. 7.2.7 Persons working in colleges / universities are eligible for registration as external candidates, providedhe/shefulfillstherequirementsstatedunder7.2.1to7.2.3aboveandproducesaletter fromtheuniversity(asinAppendixIV)statingthattheuniversityhasnoobjectionforITBombay awardingthePh.D.Degree. 7.2.8Forfulfillingtheresidentialrequirementsduringthefirstsemester,acandidatewillhavetoproduce acertificatefromhis/heremployerthathe/shehasbeenfullyrelievedfromnormaldutiesduring thesemester(s)tocompletetheresidentialrequirementatIITBombay.
