ACCESSIBILITY This course has been designed to meet the requirements contained in the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 508. If you require specific accommodations to complete this course, notify your instructor. FSCJ students should also contact Services for Students with Disabilities at www.fscj.edu/resources/disabilities/index.html. LEARNING COMMUNITIES People learn through interactions with each other, with the instructor and with written, auditory and visual learning materials. To facilitate interactive learning among learners and between learners and faculty, a major goal of this course is to encourage the development of a learning communityi.e., help learners and faculty get to know and better understand each other; hence the brief written biography introducing himself/herself (photo recommended but optional) during the first week of class. Review Syllabus: After you have reviewed the syllabus, Completion of the week one discussion board will act as acceptance of review of syllabus. If you have not logged into the course and completed this assignment by the NA (non-attendance) deadline, you may be dropped from the course for non-attendance. Discussion Board: One of the recognized disadvantages of online courses is that the faculty and students do not meet each other face to face as in normal social or classroom situations. In an effort to help you establish a study partner or group, we are asking you to meet every week online. Under "Week 1 Learning Communities", please start a new thread and discuss some interests that you have in common with other students. Completion of this task will also indicate that you have read and agree to the course policies. DISCUSSION Active participation is strongly encouraged as learners who participate in discussions are likely to experience a higher level of learning and retention of the information contained in the course. Discussions with other learners and the instructor should be addressed in a manner appropriate to polite interactions. Keep in mind there may not be only one right answer. Feel free to express your opinions. Please be aware that you are expected to write at a college level using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. So take your time and think your responses through before recording them. At the beginning of the semester you will be assigned to Group A or Group B and the Discussion Board questions will be split up into two groups. After you have completed the online presentations and self-check questions, then go to Discussion Board and post your own answer to your assigned question. Each person should post their own answer under the assigned question for their group. An appropriate response would contain at least 50

words. You should include one direct quote and cite the source in APA format related to the leadership concepts you are discussing. You should also cite sources for ideas that you have paraphrased, but not used word-for-word. Include the source in APA format at the bottom of the post. The rest should be in your own words (no slang or jargon). Then read the responses of classmates in both groups. You should reply to at least one other persons post in the other group. Your reply should discuss the subject and give reasons or examples that relate to the leadership concepts in that unit not merely agree or disagree. Your substantive reply should reference the source for your comments in APA format. Your grade in the discussions will be based upon the thoroughness, accuracy and insightfulness of your response, your use of proper grammar, punctuation and spelling, and appropriate citation in APA format. Your threads and responses must be posted within the week of the assigned unit in order to earn points (no exceptions). There are 6 discussions @ 30 points per unit with 20 points for your own answer and 10 for reply. Points may be deducted for incorrect or missing APA format, as well as multiple misspellings, improper grammar and/or improper or lack of punctuation. Examples of a discussion question and answers: Question: What leadership style was the manager using in the scenario? Answer: Mr. Johns was using the behavioral theory of democratic leadership, which is also called participative and is ...characterized by guidance from the leader rather than control by the leader (Whitehead, Weiss, & Tappen, 2010, p. 6). An example of how Mr. Johns used democratic leadership was when he asked his employees to meet with him to discuss the process and suggest ideas on how to improve it. In my experience, this style is typically used by nursing managers in hospitals. It is effective because it encourages everyone to participate and helps them feel like they had some input into the decisions that were made. Reply: I agree that Mr. Johns demonstrated democratic leadership style because he asked for input from his followers, yet he still made the final decision (Whitehead, Weiss, & Tappen, 2010). A supervisor I worked for once also used democratic style when he asked us what we thought we could do to improve customer service. We came up with some creative ideas that our boss let us try and they actually worked! APA tips on citations (refer to APA manual for complete description) Direct quotations: In the above paragraph Answer, there is an example of a direct quote. If the quote is from more than one page, then it should be written this way: (Whitehead, Weiss, & Tappen, 2010, pp. 6-7). More than one quote from same source: If you repeatedly cite the same source with more than two authors, then all three authors should be listed the first time as above.

Florida State College at Jacksonville

NUR 1823 Leadership in Nursing

After the first time, write it this way: (Whitehead, et al., 2010, p. ____). Note the spaces, periods, and commas. Paraphrased ideas: In the above paragraph Reply, there is an example of how to cite the source of an idea that was taken from another source and paraphrased. Quotation marks and page numbers are not necessary since a sentence wasnt taken word-forword. But you must give credit to the source. If no author, use first few words of the title followed by the year. If no year or no page number is available for sources on the internet, use n.d. (to indicate no date) and n.p. (to indicate no page). ASSESSMENTS / ASSIGNMENTS It is very important that you allot some time every week to study and keep up with the schedule because there are specific due dates for each assignment and penalties for late completion. Students will complete all assignments as outlined by the faculty. Faculty will share the criteria for completion and evaluation of written assignments. The instructor will designate dates for completion of written assignments. Written assignments may not be redone for a better grade. All written work submitted for nursing courses (including exit prescriptions and online discussions) must demonstrate college-level writing style using proper spelling, grammar and punctuation. All written work must be the work of the student, stated in the students own words, except when short segments are properly quoted in APA format. All sources must be documented. Plagiarism is a form of cheating (see college policies: updated to correct site http://floridastatecollegecatalog.fscj.edu/content.php? catoid=18&navoid=2288&hl=&returnto=search 1. Reading Assignments Each unit will have unit objectives and reading assignments from the course textbook, which are listed in the syllabus and on Blackboard under Assignments. The reading assignments should be done before or while viewing the online presentations and reread as often as necessary. One unit should be done each week (see time frames and grading deadlines under Calendar of Activities/Schedule of Due Dates later in this syllabus.). 2. Online Presentations and Self-check Questions During each week as outlined above, go to Blackboard under Presentations and read the online summaries of the chapters and complete the self-check questions. This will help prepare you for the tests. You may refer back to the reading assignment and repeat the self-check questions as often as necessary. The instructor will be able to monitor the time you are spending on Blackboard and when you have completed each

After you have achieved this 80 percent average then other course work( discusstion boards, paper, etc) will be added to your grade. Your total pionts must also equal 800 or 80 percent There is one online test for each unit, and it may only be taken one time. Online tests must be taken during the assigned week and completed by the due date and time established by the faculty. You will have 30 minutes to complete each test. Failure to complete the online test in the required time limit will result in a penalty of 10 points for each full minute over the time limit as logged by the computer, so watch your time. Failure to complete the online test during the required 7 day time frame without prior approval of the faculty will result in a grade of zero (0). Absences from testing or requests to take a test at an unscheduled time must be approved by the faculty member before the scheduled testing time. Documentation validating the reason for taking the test at another time must be provided if requested. Students will be allowed to make up approved testing at the discretion of the faculty member and during those times designated by the faculty member. All make-up tests
