Global ethanol production to reach 88.7 billion liters this year, biofuels group says
Global ethanol production could reach 88.7 billion liters in 2011, increasing by 3 percent from last years 85.8 billion liters, according to international biofuels group Global Renewable Fuels Alliance and F.O. Licht.

G.R.F.A. spokesperson Bliss Baker said that among the major ethanol manufacturing nations, the United States continues to be the leader of the pack with production levels expected to reach 51 billion liters this year. While energy security issues continue to preoccupy American policy makers, United States ethanol production will eliminate the need for over 212 million barrels of imported crude oil worth $21 billion in 2011, he said. Another major player in biofuels production this year will be Europe, with the continent expected to produce 5.4 billion liters of ethanol this year, a 15% increase from what was produced in 2010. Asia, for its part, is expected to produce 4 billion liters of ethanol this year, predicted the G.R.F.A. The African continent will be producing a meager 170 million liters of ethanol despite its great potential for biofuel production with its billion hectares of rain-fed, crop-producing land perfect for producing biomass for ethanol. Mr. Baker underscored the importance of Africas tapping their biofuel production potential as a means to attain fuel self-sufficiency. Much of the African economy relies almost exclusively on crude oil imports and any biofuels production on the continent will help alleviate that crippling addiction to oil. Seizing this biofuels opportunity will encourage investment in the agricultural sector, create much needed local employment and help net importers of crude oil reduce their reliance on foreign oil, he said.

Sweet potato. Bioethanol production process. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation.

The aim of this work was to research a bioprocess for bioethanol production from raw sweet potato by Saccharomyces cerevisiae at laboratory, pilot and industrial scales.1

Researchers from Environmental Microbiology Key Laboratory of Sichuan Province, Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chengdu, Sichuan, China; and Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; have presented an article titled: Application of simultaneous saccharification and

fermentation (SSF) from viscosity reducing of raw sweet potato for bioethanol production at laboratory, pilot and industrial scales. The researchers from Chengdu Institute of Biology and Graduate University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have also noted:

The fermentation mode, inoculum size and pressure from different gases were determined in laboratory. The maximum ethanol concentration, average ethanol productivity rate and yield of ethanol after fermentation in laboratory scale (128.51g/L, 4.76g/L/h and 91.4%) were satisfactory with small decrease at pilot scale (109.06g/L, 4.89g/L/h and 91.24%) and industrial scale (97.94g/L, 4.19g/L/h and 91.27%). When scaled up, the viscosity caused resistance to fermentation parameters, 1.56 AUG/g (sweet potato mash) of xylanase decreased the viscosity from approximately 30000 to 500cp. Overall, sweet potato is a attractive feedstock for bioethanol production from both the economic standpoints and environmentally friendly.
