A coisa mais sensvel a se fazer aproveitar a vida enquanto podemos, afirmou Lovelock em entrevista BBC. O cientista de 90 anos autor da Teoria de Gaia, que considera o planeta como um superorganismo, no qual todas as reaes qumicas, fsicas e biolgicas esto interligadas e no podem ser analisadas separadamente. Considerado um dos mentores do movimento ambientalista em todo o mundo a partir dos anos 1970, Lovelock tambm autor de ideias polmicas como a defesa do uso da energia nuclear como forma de restringir as emisses de carbono na atmosfera e combater as mudanas climticas.

Diz-se, e vista do que aconteceu no Haiti parece certo, que os desgnios de Deus so inescrutveis. Em Lisboa as oraes dos fiis no puderam impedir que o teto e os muros das igrejas lhes cassem em cima e os esmagassem. No Haiti, nem mesmo a simples gratido por haverem salvo vidas e bens sem nada terem feito para isso, moveu os coraes dos ricos a acudir ____ desgraa de milhes de homens e mulheres que no podem sequer presumir do nome unificador de compatriotas porque pertencem ao mais nfimo da escala social, aos no-ser, aos vivos que sempre estiveram mortos porque a vida plena lhes foi negada, escravos que foram de senhores, escravos que so da necessidade. (again) I am quite sure you have already heard of Skinners behaviorism theory and Chomskys innateness hypothesis, but have you heard of connectionism? The connectionist paradigm (CP) is as old as the chomiskian theory, it has its origins during the 50s and 60s, however, it was not successful then because of technological limitations and the apparent explaining power of the symbolic approach. Due to great development in computer science during the 80s, the CP _______________ to solve some of the biggest problems that _______________ it from going on in the 60s. The new paradigm (not actually new) is an answer to the old behaviorism which considered only the dichotomies stimulus/response and input/output without having explanatory consistency to deal with the brain process involved. The CP also provides an alternative explanation for the symbolic ideas of mind, brain, mental representation and innate rules. The connectionist models have a biological compromise on their base. The CP does not accept explanations about language which cannot be plausibly explained by the neuroscience. Whereas the symbolic view postulates that information is stored in the memory in an abstract manner, the CP postulates that they are stored in the brain and they cannot be abstract at all. There is the brain, the concrete organ and it is in the brain where you will find everything. Language, is in the brain too. All information is stored in the brain as neural networks which are activated when you want to store or retrieve something. The retrieval of some information from your brain, whatever it is (a song, an image, the pronunciation of a word), will depend on the networks activation at the time. This paradigm has great power for explaining some problems in second language learning. Take interlanguage for example. Why do some of our students keep on using certain Portuguese structures, even after we have provided the proper form _______ gazillion times? The CP also explains in a simple clear way, why it is more difficult for people to learn languages as they get older.
