COUNTY YOUTH HAVE THE CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS, ACTIVITIES, AND TALENTS! Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at the 2011 Warren County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 6th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thursday. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 5 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged face to face based on the capability of the youngster, and not by comparing one youngster and/or exhibit against another (referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 6th from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the fairgrounds. A youth talent show is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th. The talent show is divided into two divisions; the mini (ages 3-12) and maxi (ages 13-21) and are scheduled for 11AM and 1PM respectively. The talent show is guided by NYS Fair guidelines and the top winners have the option of attending the NYS Fair Talent Show. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. Please note all exhibitors and their families should plan to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy as there will be no food vendors on the grounds. For more information on how to exhibit at the Youth Fair please contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center in Warrensburg (623-3291 or 668-4881) or visit Extensions web site at: http://www.cce.cornell.edu/warren/

The July 9 concert will take place at 8:00pm at historic Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY. Admission is pay what you wish, so everyone can attend! You may purchase tickets in advance at www.hubbardhall.org or you may pay what you wish at the door. MUSIC FROM SALEM- On Sunday July 17 at 2:00pm, Hubbard Hall Projects, Inc. is pleased to present a Music from Salem chamber music concert, Delicate and Fantastic, featuring The Trout Quintet by Franz Schubert. Schubert must have especially loved the songs he wrote, The Trout, and I Greet You, because he incorporated both of them into two of his marvelous chamber music pieces the Trout Quintet and the Fantasy for violin and piano, both of which will be played on this concert. These two masterworks will frame short contrasting character pieces: the enigmatic and dreamy The Viola in My Life by Morton Feldman; an elaboration for solo cello from David Del Tredicis opera based on Alice in Wonderland; and a humorous piece for solo bass by Tom Johnson. The outstanding young violinist Gabriella Diaz joins Music from Salem for the first time with this program, along with Scott Kluksdahl, who co-coached the 2011 Music from Salem Cello Seminar, Salvatore Macchia, double bass, and Music from Salem co-directors Lila Brown, viola, and Judith Gordon, piano. The July 17 concert will take place at 2:00pm at historic Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY. Admission is pay what you wish, so everyone can attend! You may purchase tickets in advance at www.hubbardhall.org or you may pay what you wish at the door. GARDEN TOUR- The 10th annual Chapman Garden Tour, themed Ideas & Inspirations, will take place on Saturday, July 16, from 10 am to 3 pm. Featured will be nine private gardens in Glens Falls, South Glens Falls, & Fort Edward. Visitors will see extensive varieties of annuals, perennials, grasses, and shrubbery creatively displayed with stonework, art sculptures and water features. They will learn first-hand how proper placement and choice of the vast array of hardy varieties of flowers and shrubs ensures a successful garden in challenging zone 4 & 5 climates. In addition to the lovely private gardens, this year the tour route will highlight a few of the many streetscapes now found throughout the city. In recent years, homeowners and businesses have spent time and effort to landscape curbside strips, islands, and boulevards in their neighborhoods. One well known example is the traffic circle island in the center of Glens Falls, with adjacent streets beautifully finished with flower-filled urns, hanging baskets and planters. The development of a landscape is a challenge, but the end result is the pride & enjoyment derived from living in a beautiful setting. As one of the homeowners summed up gardening, One of the most delightful things about gardening is the sense of anticipation that it provides. Ticket, which cost $15, will be available starting July 1st at the Chapman Historical Museum, 348 Glen Street, Glens Falls, and at Hair Design, 22 Washington St., Glens Falls. On tour day they will be available at the museum, and at gardens at 37 Sisson Rd. Fort Edward; 20 Arbor Dr. Glens Falls;, & 16 Pine St., Queensbury.

A NEW FIRE STATION IS BEING PLANNED FOR THE SALEM VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT INC. ON NYS RTE 22 SALEM, NY. We currently have 4 fire trucks, of which 2 fire trucks are housed in a 1850 building that the volunteers own and it is way to small to serve our needs and the other 2 fire trucks are housed in a building that is owned by the Village of Salem. With this current set-up and the way that the fire dept operates this is costing the taxpayers more money because we have to have turnout gear in both buildings, double utility bills, etc. If we had 1 building we could house all 4 trucks together, have all of our PPE together, eliminate duplication of utilities and etc. With the new building when its time to order a new fire truck then we can spec one out that meets the needs of the communities that we protect and serve and meet the fire department needs. The bay area would be 4624-4900 sq ft in size compared to the current 800 sq ft and the meeting area would be 2912-3000 sq ft in size. Neither of the current buildings can be remodeled or expanded because of site restrictions and we are trying to be proactive now and provide a facility that will allow for future growth.Roughly 15yrs ago the fire department formed a new building committee to explore ideas of building a new firehouse and since then there has been a lot of talk and NO forward progress. The membership wants a new firehouse just like the people in the community. We are in the process of starting a capital fundraising campaign for our new firehouse. The fire department has $50,000.00 set aside already to be put towards the estimated $400,000.00 cost of the new building. We need to raise $200,000.00 before we start phase one of the construction project. We all know that there is a very limited economic base within our fire protection areas and people dont have the resources to go out and pay the extra taxes that it would take for a bond measure. As soon as we reach our goal and funding is secured we will start building. With in-house helpers and people who are willing to help out we can also save on other costs and reduce the overall costs even more. Our goal from start to completion would be 3-6 months. The new building would also be able to hosts meetings, gatherings, and community events something that has been missing from the Salem community since the old American Legion burnt some 20plus yrs ago. We have looked at applying for grants but with all of the legal obligations that are attached to a grant for a new building the price tag would probably more than double, so we want to raise monies through fundraisers. The new building would also be equipped with a new generator in case of power outages. We need to be self sufficient in case a disaster strikes. So please help us out and if you make a donation label it new firehouse. We are a 501(c)3 not for profit. If you have any questions contact: Steven Saunders President @ 518-854-7516 and leave a message or send an email to salemfd4434@yahoo.com.

Blinkys Random Thoughts 2011

In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags werent good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, We didnt have the green thing back in my day. The clerk responded, Thats our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment. She was right, that generation didnt have the green thing in its day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But they didnt have the green thing back in that customers day. In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didnt have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didnt climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks. But she was right. They didnt have the green thing in her day. Back then, they washed the babys diapers because they didnt have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts, wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers, sisters, cousins or their moms friends, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right, they didnt have the green thing back in her day. Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house ? Not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana . In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn?t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didnt fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by work ing so they didnt need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But shes right, they didnt have the green thing back then.. They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didnt have the green thing back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didnt need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But isnt it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didnt have the green thing back then?
