JAPAN PORT CONSULTANTS, LTD. (JPC) is a prominent firm of consulting engineers specializing in port and coastal works, naval architecture, and economic and financial feasibility studies. JPC was established in 1961 with key staff provided by portrelated government agencies, institutions and private firms. The permanent staff and part-time specialists currently total over 160. Other resources include a hydraulic test laboratory rated as one of the most sophisticated privately owned facilities in Japan. Since 1985 JPC has successfully completed over 16,700 assignments for various ports and floating equipment in Japan and elsewhere in the world. Port of Colombo Extension Project (III) in Sri Lanka. Designed by JPC and constructed under its supervision, this major container terminal in Southwest Asia has four container berths equipped with thirty-three transfer cranes, five 35.5ton and six 40.0-ton capacity gantry cranes, that suffice to accommodate post-Panamax sized container vessels. The firm's assignment included further upgrading of computerized operation system already enhanced at the previous stage of the Development Project.
