SC nod to impeachment motion of Dinakaran
New Delhi: In a setback to Sikkim High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran, the Supreme Court today refused to quash some of the charges framed against him by a Rajya Sabha-appointed panel looking into allegations of corrupt practices and misconduct against him. A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi, however, allowed Dinakarans plea seeking removal of senior advocate P P Rao from the inquiry panel. The bench asked Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President Hamid Ansari to reconstitute the panel by replacing Rao with another distinguished jurist. The court, however, made it clear that Dinakaran will be facing the same charges which were framed by the three-member committee comprising Supreme Court judge Justice Aftab Alam, Karnataka High Court Chief Justice J S Khehar and senior advocate P P Rao. The apex court had also rejected Sharans contention that the panel can neither conduct its own probe nor frame any additional charges as it is prohibited under Section 3 of the Judges Inquiry Act. How can you say that? Supposing someone fabricates documents and submits it to the Speaker or Chairman as the case may be. The members on the basis of the fabricated documents adopt the notice of motion. Should the committee not scrutinise the material? the bench had asked. They are legally trained minds who can detect the fabricated material. In fact, it would offer protection to a judge also from baseless allegations, the bench had said. PTI

Bangalore: The online retail industry in India is likely to be worth Rs 7,000 crore by 2015 due to easy availability of broadband services and increasing internet penetration across the country, apex industry body Assocham has said today. Buying-selling trends received from leading online shopping portals indicate the online retail market currently stands at Rs 2,000 crore and is growing at a steady annual rate of 35 percent. India is set to become the third largest nation of internet users in the next two years with a large chunk of youngsters eager to adopt new technologies with rapidly changing lifestyles. A booming economy and rising disposable incomes have contributed to the evolution of online shopping, said D S Rawat, secretary-general of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), releasing findings of a random survey conducted during January to June 2011 in 10 cities in which 5,000 shoppers were interviewed. Earlier, most online shoppers used to evaluate options by gathering information on available products and prices or buy low-value items like gift products but finally opted for final transactions at the traditional retail outlets. But now the trend is changing fast. Leading companies have gauged the potential of online retail industry and are gearing up fast to cash in, said Mr Rawat. The survey conducted by Assocham Social Development Foundation (ASDF) involved interactions with 500 shoppers in the age group of 16 to 35 years each in ten cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Lucknow and Jaipur.

ONLINE RETAIL INDUSTRY to reach `7,000 cr mark

Majority of consumers also said they shop online to purchase products that cannot be found in malls and the local markets. Around 25 percent (most of these comprised high-income consumers residing in suburbs, NCR cities) of the respondents said they prefer to hangout and shop at swanky malls, upmarket shopping complexes as they not only boast of multibrand availability under one roof but provide air-conditioned, dust-free atmosphere. A total of 20 percent of those interviewed said they prefer to shop at local traditional markets because of the familiarity with ambiance, ease of access, variety of goods, early opening and late closing

About 40 percent of those surveyed across these cities said they prefer to shop online considering convenience to shop anytime during the 24 hours and one can collect detailed product information. Besides,

one can research variety of products available and can easily compare prices from different vendors anywhere in the world.

times and shop owners relationship with loyal customers. A meagre 15 percent of shoppers said they prefer to shop at specialty stores rather than making a voyage to a mall or looking for a good bargain at

traditional markets as they can get specific stuff from specific stores. Consumers in Mumbai ranked number one among top five cities, with almost 65 percent of Mumbaikars saying they prefer shopping online and citied rising fuel prices as one of the primary reason they do not want to loiter around malls, traditional shopping hubs. Ahmedabad ranked second where almost 55 percent of respondents said they prefer shopping followed by Delhi where 45 percent of consumers said they prefer shopping online. Shoppers in Bangalore ranked on 5th spot with 30 percent of respondents saying they prefer to shop online, whereas 35 percent of shoppers (mostly youngsters) said they prefer to stroll through malls for their shopping needs. About 15 percent of respondents said they prefer to shop at neighborhood markets and around 20 percent of them opted for shopping at specialty stores to buy specific commodities like groceries, apparels, toiletries, stationary etc. Facilities like free shipping, product ratings/reviews, multiple payment options, product demonstration videos and free return policy largely influence the purchasing decision of consumers shopping online, concluded the survey. Of those who are averse to shopping online cited various reasons like prefer to research products and services online and then actually buy them from a store (30 percent), find delivery costs too high (20 percent), dont want to share personal financial information online (25 percent), lack of trust on whether products would be delivered in good condition (15 percent), dont have a credit/debit card (10 percent).

Hill stations attract property buyers

Bangalore: With family income on the rise, hill stations in India are increasingly becoming attractive real estate destinations for more and more Indians, according to a survey. While some want an abode in hill stations as only a holiday home, some others want it as a second home they can drop in any time they please. This appetite, though still niche, is catching up fast amongst Indian homebuyers. The survey, conducted on the website Makaan.com from June one to June 23 this year, saw participation from over 4,800 respondents nationally, with the majority of them belonging to the age group of 26-35 years. According to the survey findings, Indian hill stations are survey takers expressed that for them the purpose of buying a house in the hills was clearly self use, be it for now or for future. Another 29 percent respondents want to look at such options as a holiday destination or weekend getaway. Interestingly, only 21 percent want to buy real estate in the hilly areas as probable investment options. When the relationship got serious, he promised her that they could marry soon. He had taken her once to Nandi Hills and another time to Mysore. He kept insisting that they should get into a physical relationship, which was refused by her. Once in a while, he would sneak into her house after her brother went to work. On June 27, the victim told her brother that she was not feeling well and would not go to work. After Bheema left, Manjunath came into the house around 11.30 am and raped her. Just about the same time, her brother knocked on the door. Manjunath opened the door and got into an argument with Bheema, she stated in her declaration. After Manjunath left, Bheema found his sister sitting in the room and crying. She told Bheema that she had been raped. An angry Bheema ran out to catch Manjunath. SC holds salwa judum as unconstitutional

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today restrained the Chhattisgarh government and the Centre from appointing tribals as Special Police Officers and arming them to counter Maoists, terming the step as unconstitutional. The court also ordered a CBI probe into the attack on social activist Swami Agnivesh during his visit to Maoist-hit Chhattisgarh in March. We direct the CBI to take over the investigation into series of violence and attack unleashed on Swami Agnivesh and his companions, a bench comprising justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar said. Asking the Chhattisgarh government and the Centre to desist from appointing the tribals as Special Police Officers (SPOs) and arming them for countering the Naxals in any manner directly or indirectly, the court said the appointment of tribal youths as SPOs is unconstitutional. The bench said that the eligibility criteria including the educational qualification and training of the tribals to combat Maoists goes against the provisions of statues and the Constitution. It said that creation of Koya Commandos and Salwa Judum was in violation of the Constitution. The special police officers have been given the name Koya Commandos after that of a tribe in the Dantewada region. The issue of SPOs has arisen during the hearing of a petition against existence of Salwa Judum (vigilante groups) in Naxal-hit regions of the state to fight Maoists. The petition was filed by sociologist Nandini Sundar, historian Ramachandra Guha, former bureaucrat E A S Sarma and others seeking a direction to the state government to refrain from allegedly supporting Salwa Judum. . The issue of attack on Swami Agnivesh was brought before the court in the month of April this year. Earlier, Agnivesh had said that Salwa Judum was still active and the chief minister was indulging in double-speak as no FIR has been lodged against any of its members as per the recommendation of the NHRC. Swami Agnivesh had come to the court in March this year when he was attacked by a group of people allegedly consisting of SPOs and Salwa Judum volunteers when he was visiting a Naxal region near Dantewada with activists of the Art of Living of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Sait said he will provide library facilities and bookracks for 20 schools which come under his constituency. He called upon the children to maintain cleanliness in their schools and ensure hygiene conditions.

Hyderabad: The Telangana movement today gathered further steam with TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao and party MP Vijay Shanthi resigning from their Lok Sabha membership in support of the demand for a separate state. Chadrasekhar Rao and Shanthi faxed their resignation letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Rao would meet the Speaker personally in a day or two, TRS sources said. State Textiles Minister Shankar Rao, who is in the US, has also faxed his resignation to the Deputy Speaker, taking the total number of state ministers who have quit to 12. However, Rao has only resigned from the assembly and not from the cabinet. 75 MLAs and a dozen MPs had quit yesterday

to mount pressure on the Centre for an early announcement in favour of separate statehood demand. Chandrasekhar Rao represents the Mahaboobnagar Lok Sabha constituency, while Shanthi represents the Medak constituency. TRS and the Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC) have been demanding en masse resignations by MPs, MLAs of Congress and TDP to force the Centre to accept the separate statehood demand. Speaking at a meeting here last night, Chandrasekhar Rao described the resignations of public representatives as historical and demanded that the Centre take the en masse resignations into cognisance for accepting the demand. Goa booze bottles to carry holograms

Panaji: In a bid to certify the originality of the liquor available in Goa, the state excise department has decided to introduce holo grams on the liquor bottles manufactured in the state soon. With this, tourists, planning to have booze in Goa during the vacations gulp down the contents without the fear of spurious liquor. But, for that they will have to make sure that the liquor bottle carries a proper hologram. Excise commissioner P S Reddy said that such a measure is being put in place to make sure that the tourists are not sold spurious or adulterated liquor in the state. Hologram will be a multicolour seal that would be tamp er-proof and will be pasted on the bottle at the manufacturing facility itself, he said, adding that it would be unique to the kind of liquor. If the hologram is removed, it will be denigrated into pieces, Reddy said. The state government, which has invited tenders for hologram manufacturing, has sent the samples to IIT Delhi to check the quality of labels. Goa, which attracts around 24 lakh visitors every year, is a favourite liquor destination with the availability of non-expensive liquor across the state. Reddy said the state manufactures around 3 lakh boxes of liquor every month, of which, only 50 per cent is consumed locally, while the rest is exported to other states. Locally, most of the liquor sale is done through restaurants, he said.PTI

Mrashtra students with 45% can apply for engg

Nagpur: Engineering colleges in Maharashtra, which were finding it extremely difficult to get candidates for degree courses, have some reason to cheer now. The All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), an an advisory body in all matters relating to technical education, has relaxed the basic eligibility criteria for admissions to the first year engineering course. The criterion has been brought down to 45 per cent (40 per cent for reserved category) aggregate in physics, chemistry and mathematics (PCM) group in standard XII exam, from 50 per cent in force till last year. This follows the apex engineering body?s decision to lower the bar for polytechnic admissions to 35 per cent from 50 per cent in standard X exam from any board. The AICTE had taken this decision a couple of days back. But Its yet to reach us formally, sources close to the director of technical education (Mumbai) Subhash Mahajan said. The official added that DTE will make changes only after getting official communication in this regard. Sources said the last date of submission of forms is also likely to be extended, if the new criterion is implemented. They pointed out that AICTE was forced to lower the bar as demand for engineers was globally high, but the field evoked a poor response from candidates. Not only were high fees a factor, but many students were also not able to fulfil even the basic criteria of getting 50 percent in PCM group in class XII exams. PTI

Rahul visits Bhatta Parsaul again

Greater Noida: Nearly two months after his visit to the epicentre of farmers protests at Bhatta Parsaul that led to his midnight arrest, Rahul Gandhi made his way to the twin villages again here early this morning throwing a fresh challenge to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. The Congress General Secretary made Bhatta Parsaul, which saw widespread protests over land acquisition two months back, the first stop of his Kisan Sandesh Yatra when he came calling in a car at 6 am drumming up support for the planned kisan mahapanchayat in Aligarh on Saturday. The Mayawati government refused Rahul permission to hold a kisan mahapanchayat in Bhatta Parsaul in the outkirts of Delhi as the two sides geared up for another round of confrontation ahead of the crucial Assembly elections in UP next year. Rahul looked very much at home, holding a small, beaming child in school uniform on his lap as he talked to villagers. Rahul was accompanied by security personnel. Whatever happened in Bhatta Parsaul, other people were not aware of it. I wanted to understand this land acquisition happening here, from here to Agra. This yatra I have started from Bhatta.

Roseau (Dominica): He might have been the most prolific Indian scorer in the ongoing Test series but senior Indian batsman Rahul Dravid says it has not been easy as he has had to adjust to the most challenging West Indian tracks in his four visits here. The two tracks (in the series) have been the toughest I have played on in my four trips (to the Caribbean), claimed Dravid ahead of the final Test starting here Wednesday. From what I believe, this pitch too would have pace and bounce, he said. Dravid is the leading scorer of the series from both sides, having made 212 runs from four innings at an average of 53.00. India, leading 1-0 in the three-Test series, face a litmus test to come out unscathed from the final game. Dravid has no doubt that his team would, by the time the match is over. Everybody wants to finish on a good note. Having said so, we need five days of big performance. I believe we have the team to win the Test. The attitude within the squad is very positive, he said. We would have liked to win in Barbados. But losing 130 overs due to rain was disappointing. We were on a roll, from the second innings onwards, he said. . India had set a target of 280 runs on the final day and West Indies were on the verge of losing at 202 for seven when rain and

bad light allowed them to live another day. Bowling has been very good. Both the tracks were slightly tilted in favour of batsmen which is good. These wickets have had a lot of pace and bounce. But they have been good cricket wickets. They have been good advertisement for Test cricket, he said. Dravid might have found these tracks merely challenging but it has been absolutely devastating for a few young batsmen, notably Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli, who have been miserable failures. These tracks have been hard on batsmen. The quality of bowling has made it very

challenging. Our batting hasnt fired but in the context of wickets and series, we havent done too badly. Its not easy for young batsmen. These tracks probably have been the toughest they would come across in their careers. In that respect they would have learnt a lot and it would hold them in good stead, he said. Dravid was all praise for Indian bowling, especially Ishant Sharma, and marveled at the way the slip cordon has performed in the series. Our bowling has been exceptional. Our slip catching has been top class. Its a great positive. PTI

Beetroot juice can help boost stamina

London: Drinking beetroot juice can help athletes beat the best, scientists have claimed. Researchers at the University of Exeter found that the brightly-coloured juice gives professional cyclists such a boost that they can shave vital seconds off their time. Beetroot juice is a natural source of nitrate, which is thought to be the active ingredient in affecting athletes performance. According to the scientists, the chemical, once inside the body, starts widening blood vessels, speeding oxygen flow to the muscles, including the brain, and allowing them make the most of the oxygen breathed in, the Daily Mail reported. Previous studies have showed that the juice helps in lowering blood pressure, warding off dementia, and even giving energy to elderlies. In the latest study, published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the Exeter team asked nine men who cycle competitively to compete in time trials over 2.5 miles and 10 miles. Before setting off, they drank just a pint of beetroot juice. They repeated the two routes on a different day, but this time fuelled by beetroot juice missing its nitrite. When the cyclists drank the nitrite-rich, ordinary beetroot juice they were 11 seconds quicker over the shorter distance and 45 seconds quicker over the longer route. While this may not sound like much, the top two riders in last years Tour de France were separated by just 39 seconds. This is the first time weve studied the effects of beetroot juice, and the high nitrite levels found in it, on simulated competition, said study author Dr Andrew Jones. These findings show an improvement in performance that, at competition level, could make a real difference particularly in an event like the Tour de France where winning margins can be tight, Dr Jones added. And it is not just professional athletes who could benefit, with better use of oxygen making it easier for the old and frail to complete everyday tasks, including providing the energy needed to walk to the shops, the scientists said. The study used shop-bought beetroot juice but home-made versions should also be beneficial, they said. However, there could be an unexpected result. A quirk of genetics means that eating beetroot leaves some people producing purple urine, or beeturia as it is known to scientists. PTI

raffic is a nightmare in Bangalore that is getting scarier by the day. The traffic police department has been expending all its wit and resources to put some order into this chaotic rush of vehicles. Two engineering students from MVJ College of Engineering have found a solution that could solve some of the traffic problems in the city. Traffic signal control, innovated by Abhay K Kothari and Nipun Singh Chauhan, changes the signal light depending on the traffic density. The city has 35 lakh vehicles and the country four crore. Due to this high volume, traffic congestion is a major problem in the country, which was what prompted the two students to come up with a project to find a solution. In the city, the traffic light is set to a constant time, and it changes only accordingly, whether there is traffic at that signal or not. This increases the waiting period and adds to the congestion and frustration among vehicle users, Abhay Kothari told Bangalore Beat. The project aims to reduce the waiting time at junctions by constantly monitoring the traffic density, using cameras placed at vantage points. The traffic signals are made to change depending on the number of vehicles. For example, at a four-way traffic signal, if the density is huge on one side and less on the other, then the light will be green for a longer time at the side where the traffic is more for the passing vehicles and will be for a shorter duration on the other side. The system needs to be configured initially for every road, based on the dimension of the road. The system is completely automated and requires no human supervision. Placement of cameras at correct points is crucial, since a proper field of view is essential for the system to provide the best possible results, Nipun explained to Bangalore Beat. This system is more advantageous than the one which uses sensors placed un-

Kids risk ill health, shorter life with too much salt
London: Health experts in Britain have warned that the processed foods and sauces at the heart of the nations diet are actually fuelling a dangerous daily overdose of salt and putting childrens health at risk. Children are routinely eating too much salt, risking ill health and a shorter life. Typical amounts are at least 50 percent more than the recommended daily maximum but some consume almost double. High salt consumption pushes up blood pressure, which in the long term can lead to strokes and heart attacks. These are the countrys biggest causes of death and disability, Daily Mail reported. For their study, health campaigners took two typical daily menus enjoyed by many children. They calculated the salt content to be 9.3g to 9.6g. However, for a child aged seven to ten, the recommended maximum is just 5g. Eating 9.6g of salt in a day would be 92 percent above this amount nearly double. Safe daily amounts of salt vary depending on age and size, starting at one gram or less for babies. If the entire nation cuts down to these levels, doctors estimate that 70,000 heart attacks and strokes would be prevented in just one year! Katharine Jenner of the Consensus Action on Salt and Health, which has been campaigning for food manufacturers and supermarkets to remove hidden salt, said: Popular foods like bread, cereal, baked beans, cheese, tomato sauce and processed meats are some of the biggest culprits. So try not to feed your child them every day. Also, throw away the salt cellar. If you eat food which tastes less salty, your taste buds adapt really quickly. She said: The higher the blood pressure in childhood, the higher the blood pressure will be in adulthood... By getting your child used to less salt, you are protecting their health in the long term. These could get damaged due to environmental changes like rain, vibrations from and weight of heavy vehicles. Our project can be used by increasing the range of the existing infrastructure of traffic cameras that have already been deployed with very little or no additional cost, he said. The placement of cameras is the most difficult to figure out. It is configured according to the length and breadth of the road. The project requires some further development and we have plans to contact officials concerned to approve and implement this once we are finished with all the necessary testing and enhancements, said Nipun Singh Chauhan and Abhay Kothari.

London: British scientists claim to have found that tree frogs possess specially adapted self-cleaning feet, a finding which may have practical applications for the medical industry. Tree frog feet may provide a design for self-cleaning sticky surfaces, which could be useful for a wide range of products especially in contaminating environments medical bandages, tyre performance, and even long lasting adhesives, said lead scientist Niall Crawford of University of Glasgow. Tree frogs have sticky pads on their toes that they use to cling on in difficult situations, but until now it was unclear how they prevent these pads from picking up dirt. Interestingly the same factors that allow tree frogs to cling on also provide a self cleaning service. To make their feet sticky tree frogs secrete mucus, they can then increase their adhesion by moving their feet against the surface to create friction. We have now shown that the mucus combined with this movement allows the frogs to clean their feet as they walk, said Crawford. In their research, the scientists placed the Whites tree frogs on a rotatable platform and measured the angles at which the frog lost its grip. When the experiment was repeated with frogs whose feet were contaminated with dust they lost grip initially but if they took a few steps their adhesive forces were recovered, sciencecodex.com reported. When the frogs did not move the ad-

Washington: Have you ever wondered why you cant stop eating just one potato chip? Its because the fats in these foods help trigger a marijuana-like chemical in body which makes them hard to resist, scientists have found. Researchers at the University of California Irvine (ICI) found that fats in these foods trigger a surprising biological mechanism that produces natural marijuana-like chemicals in the body called endocannabinoids, which increases the craving for more fatty food. In their study, appeared online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers discovered that when rats tasted something fatty, cells in their upper gut started producing endocannabinoids. Sugars and proteins, the researchers noted, did not have this effect. The process starts on the tongue, where fats in food generate a signal that travels first to the brain and then through a nerve bundle called the vagus to the intestines. There, the signal stimulates the production of endocannabinoids, which initiates a surge in cell signalling that prompts the wanton intake of fatty foods, probably by initiating the release of digestive chemicals linked to hunger and satiety that compel us to eat more, the researchers said. The findings suggest it might be possible to curb this tendency by obstructing endocannabinoid activity, for example, by using drugs that clog cannabinoid receptors, said Daniele Piomelli, who led the ICI study. Since these drugs wouldnt need to enter the brain, they shouldnt cause the central side effects anxiety and depression seen when endocannabinoid signalling is blocked in the brain, he noted.

hesive forces recovered much more slowly. This shows that just taking a step enables frogs to clean their feet and restore their adhesion ability, Crawford said. Whites tree frogs have tiny hexagonal patterns on their feet, which allow some parts of the pad to remain in contact with the surface and create friction, whilst the channels between allow the mucus to

spread throughout the pad. This mucus at once allows the frog to stick and then, when they move, also carries away any dirt. If this can be translated into a manmade design it may provide a re-useable, effective adhesive, say the scientists. The findings have been presented at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Conference in Glasgow. PTI

Piomelli said that from an evolutionary standpoint, theres a compelling need for animals to consume fats, which are scarce in nature but crucial for proper cell functioning. In contemporary human society, however, fats are readily available, and the innate drive to eat fatty foods leads to obesity, diabetes and cancer. This is the first demonstration that endocannabinoid signalling in the gut plays an important role in regulating fat intake, Louise Turner Arnold Chair in the Neurosciences and professor of pharmacology added. British PM in Afghan
as soldier goes missing
Camp Bastion (Afghanistan): British Prime Minister David Cameron was forced yesterday to scrap a visit to an Afghan town he had held up as an example of improved security after a soldier went missing in the area. International forces have launched a huge manhunt for the British soldier, who disappeared just hours before Cameron began a surprise visit to southern Helmand province to announce Britain would withdraw more of its 9,500 troops. Cameron said he had cancelled a planned trip to Lashkar Gah, where Britain is handing over control of security to Afghan forces, so British helicopters and ground forces could continue their hunt. I arrived here today and received the news about this very worrying incident of a British soldier going missing in central Helmand, he told reporters after he arrived on a Royal Air Force plane at the Camp Bastion base. I was just very clear that youve got something like that absolutely urgent taking place, where you want to concentrate all the assets and ability that you have to try and find this person and bring it to the right conclusion.

Middleton at risk of anorexia, says expert

Rome: Kate Middleton, the 29year-old Duchess of Cambridge, is at risk of contracting anorexia, says an Italian expert. You only need look at the pictures from the current visit to Canada to see that she really has lost a lot of weight and that shes bordering on anorexia, said Fabiola De Clercq, founder of Italys Association for the Study and Research of Anorexia. Prince William and Kates tour of Canada and the US began on June 30. Before her marriage in April, Kate went on a low-carbohydrate diet, De Clercq said. The Italian expert said she was concerned what effect the super-slender duchess could have on young women. As happens increasingly often in the case of fashion models, the young duchesss appearances risk becoming an advert for anorexia, said De Clerq. Today, even women aged 4550 dream of being like svelte 15year-olds, she said. IANS

Ben Ali gets 15 yrs in jail over drugs, weapons charges

Tunis: A Tunis court yesterday sentenced ousted Tunisian president Zine el Abidine Ben Ali in his absence to 15 years in jail for possession of arms, drugs and archaeological artefacts. In his second trial since fleeing to Saudi Arabia following a popular uprising in January, Ben Ali was also asked to pay a fine of 54,000 euros ($78,500). The former strongman and his wife Leila Trabelsi had already been sentenced in absentia to 35 years in prison last month for misappropriating public funds after large sums of cash and jewellery were discovered in a police search of their palace. In todays trial, Ben Ali alone was accused of harbouring drugs and weapons at his palace in the Carthage neighbourhood north of Tunis. He also faces a drug trafficking charge. After fours hours of deliberation, the court sentenced him to 10 years for drug possession, five years for weapons possession and six months for possession of archaeological artefacts. Todays trial, just like yesterdays trial and the 93 other scheduled trials, is nonexistent as it breaches all standards of a fair trial, Ben Alis lawyers said in a statement read out before the verdict was announced. Todays trial is part of a political smear campaign against president Ben Ali aimed at portraying him as a drugs, weapons and currency smuggler. The trial had been scheduled to take place last week but was postponed due to a judges strike. It opened with presiding judge Touhmi Hafi noting Ben Alis absence for the record, saying: The accused is not present and is a fugitive. Ben Alis attorneys then pressed for another postponement to allow them more time to prepare their defence. After their request was turned down, the lawyers stormed out, with Hosni Beji blasting what he called the disregard for the rights of the defence. Their exit triggered loud boos from the public. AFP

Britains Prime Minister David Cameron talks with British and US troops during a visit at Camp Bastion, outside Lashkar Gah, yesterday. Its just absolute common sense that the military should concentrate on the most important requirement of all which is to help and find this person rather than to bother flying me around. Afghan police in the southern province of Helmand, where mostly American and British troops are fighting the Taliban insurgency, said the man had been kidnapped in the Gereshk area of Nahri Sarraj district. The Taliban claimed that its fighters had kidnapped and killed a British soldier in Helmand, but there was no independent confirmation and the militia is known to routinely exaggerate its claims. Lashkar Gah was one of seven initial handover areas in Afghanistan identified by foreign forces ahead of a full transfer of responsibility across the country and the withdrawal of all western combat troops by the end of 2014. After years of Taliban violence Lashkar Gah was seen as the most unlikely candidate among those chosen for early transition. AFP

Cairo: An Egyptian court has released on bail 14 people accused of killing protesters during the revolt that led to the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak. The court in the port city of Suez Monday granted bail of 10,000 Egyptian pounds (around $1,680) each to the former security chief of Suez, nine policemen, one businessman and his three sons, the Al Masry al Youm daily reported. Angry families of the victims, however, forced security officials to evacuate the courtroom. The suspects face charges of killing antiMubarak protesters during the uprising that began Jan 25 and led to Mubaraks resignation Feb 11 after nearly 30 years in power. Suez saw the most violent clashes between protesters and police during the 18day protests. At least 840 people were killed and more than 6,000 wounded during the uprising, according to human rights group Amnesty International. Along with his sons Alaa and Gamal, Mubarak has been charged with premeditated murder of protesters in the revolt. If found guilty, he could face the death penalty. Mubarak denies all charges. IANS

Antismoking drugs may up heart attack risk by 72 %

Washington: People who take help of anti-smoking drugs to kick the butt are 72 percent more prone to serious heart attacks than those who take sham medications, a new study led by an Indian-origin scientist has claimed. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions in the US found that healthy and middleaged smokers who take varenicline, the widely-used smoking cessation drug on the market, had a 72 percent increased risk of being hospitalised with a heart attack or other serious heart problems. People want to quit smoking to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease but in this case theyre taking a drug that increases the risk for the very problems theyre trying to avoid, said lead researcher Sonal Singh, an assistant professor of internal medicine at Johns Hopkins.

Pigeons never forget a face

London: Pigeons are cleverer than you thought they never forget a face, say researchers. A new study by the University of Paris has shown that even feral and untrained pigeons can recognise individuals probably by using facial characteristics and are not fooled by a change of clothes. Although pigeons have shown remarkable feats of perception when given training in the lab this is the first study showing similar abilities in untrained feral pigeons, say the researchers. In a park in Paris city centre, pigeons were fed by two researchers, of similar build and skin colour, wearing different coloured lab coats. One individual simply ignored the pigeons, allowing them to feed while the other was hostile and chased them away. This was followed by a second session when neither chased away the pigeons, sciencecodex.com reported. The experiment, which was repeated several times, showed that pigeons were able to recognise the individuals and continued to avoid te researcher who had chased them away even when they no longer did so. Swapping lab coats during the experiments did not confuse the pigeons and they continued shun the researcher who had been initially hostile. It is very likely that the pigeons recognised the researchers by their faces, since the individuals were both female and of a similar age, build and skin colour, said Dr Dalila Bovet, who led the study. Interestingly, the pigeons, without training, spontaneously used the most relevant characteristics of the individuals (probably facial traits), instead of the lab coats that covered 90 per cent of the body, Bovet added. The fact that the pigeons appeared to know that clothing colour was not a good way of telling humans apart suggests that the birds have developed abilities to discriminate between humans in particular. This specialised ability may have come about over the long period of association with humans, from early domestication to many years of living in cities. Future work will focus on identifying whether pigeons learn that humans often change clothes and so use more stable characteristics for recognition, or if there is a genetic basis for this ability, linked to domestication or to having evolved in an urban environment, say the researchers. Putin, Medvedev may name third person for prez

Moscow: Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin may propose another candidate for the presidential elections in 2012, an official said. There are three equal scenarios first, Medvedev; second, Putin; and third, some third person whose candidacy has already been coordinated by them (the president and prime minister, said Sergei Mironov, former speaker of the Russian Federation Council. Mironov currently heads the State Duma faction of the A Just Russia party. He said Putin and Medvedev had already agreed upon everything but will not make their decision public before the start of the election campaign because if one if them is announced as a candidate, the other becomes a lame duck. Tehran: Iran is all set to launch the first phase of its national internet in August, a minister said. Minister of Communications and Information Technology Reza Taqipour said the pilot and first phases titled phases Zero and One would be completed and be operational by late August, Press TV reported. Taqipour said the national internet will initially offer 8 Mb high-speed broadband for home users. The customers will have 20 Mb of bandwidth when the next phases of the internet network become operational. In the study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Singh and his colleagues analysed 14 double-blind, randomised, controlled clinical trials involving more than 8,200 healthy people who received either varenicline or a placebo. Varenicline made by Pfizer is sold in many countries including India under the brand-name Chantix. While the number of people who died in each group was the same (seven), the researchers found that the risk of a major harmful cardiovascular event requiring hospitalisation such as a heart attack or arrhythmia was 72 percent in the varenicline arms. None of the studies followed people for longer than a year. The average age of study participants was less than 45 years and the majority were men. Varenicline has been shown to increase the chances of a successful quit attempt, compared to unassisted smoking cessation attempts. But overall, the majority of smokers who quit do so without any assistance at all. Moreover, Singh noted, varenicline already carries a boxed warning the Food and Drug Administrations highest level of caution because of its association with suicidal thoughts and behaviours. We notified the FDA of our cardiovascular safety concerns with Chantix earlier this year, Singh said. On June 16, the FDA announced that on the basis of a 700-person study, people with existing heart disease who use varenicline have a slightly increased risk of a heart attack or other cardiovascular event. But Singhs study found that varenicline substantially increased the risk of a serious cardiovascular event even among smokers without heart disease. I think our new research shifts the risk-benefit profile of varenicline. People should be concerned. They dont need Chantix to quit and this is another reason to consider avoiding Chantix altogether, Singh said.

Social pressure causes people to form false memories: Study

London: Social pressure can make people form false memories while recalling shared events with their friends, a new study has found. Researchers from University College London found that people regularly replace their stored memory with the one that is recounted by a friend, the Daily Mail reported. For the study, the researchers arranged for volunteers to watch a documentary film in small groups. Three days later, they were called individually to the lab to take a memory test, answering questions about the film. They were also asked how confident they were in their answers. They were later invited back to the lab to retake the test while the scientists scanned their brain activity. This time, the subjects were also given a lifeline, the supposed answers of the others in their film viewing group, along with social media-style photos. Planted among these were false answers to questions the volunteers had previously answered correctly and confidently. The participants conformed to puter generations. Some of the responses reverted back to the original, correct ones, but close to half remained erroneous, implying that the subjects were relying on false memories implanted in the earlier session. An analysis of the brain scan data showed differences in brain activity between the persistent false memories and the temporary errors of social compliance. The most outstanding feature of the false memories was a strong co-activation and connectivity between two brain areas the hippocampus and the amygdala. The hippocampus is known to play a role in long-term memory formation, while the amygdala, known as the emotion centre of the brain, plays a role in social interaction. The scientists think that the amygdala may act as a gateway connecting the social and memory processing parts of our brain. Its stamp may be needed for some types of memories, giving them approval to be uploaded to the memory banks. Thus social reinforcement could act on the amygdala to persuade our brains to replace a strong memory with a false one. PTI

the group on these planted responses, giving incorrect answers nearly 70 per cent of the time, the scientists reported in journal Science. But were they simply conforming to perceived social demands, or had their memory of the film actually undergone a change? To find out, the researchers invited the subjects back to the lab to take the memory test once again, telling them that the answers they had previously been fed were not those of their fellow film watchers, but random com-

The latest trial, conducted at three US facilities has shown that the use of antimicrobial copper surfaces in intensive care units cuts down risks of hospital infection by 40.4 percent. Antimicrobial copper touch surfaces on door knobs, railings and tray tables are made from copper alloys, such as brass and bronze, to prevent infections. Michael Schmidt, professor of microbiology and immunology at Sloan Kettering, demonstrated a 97 percent reduction in surface pathogens in rooms with copper surfaces. Schmidt said: Bacteria present on ICU room surfaces are probably responsible for 35-80 percent of patient infections, demonstrating how critical it is to keep hospitals clean. The copper objects used in the clinical trial supplemented cleaning protocols, lowered microbial levels, and resulted in a statistically significant reduction in the number of infections contracted by patients treated in those rooms, he said. Extensive lab tests have demonstrated coppers antimicrobial efficacy against key organisms responsible for these infections, and clinical trials around the world are now reporting on its efficacy in busy, real-world environments, Schimidt concluded. Soon foldable twinseater sport plane to soar to skies

Have you ever seen or flown a small sport plane which can both take off and land on water or ground, has foldable wings so that you can carry it on your trailer-truck and park it in your garage? Now this may not remain a dream, as a prototype of the American lightsport aircraft (LSA) which is being tested for the past three years is likely to enter the production line in the second quarter of 2012. The two-seater ICON A5 is being developed by California-based Icon Aircraft. Its wings can be folded easily from the cockpit in under five minutes while on water or land. The company last week announced that it closed a $25 million round of equity infusion in June to fund the project through the completion of its ongoing engineering development program, manufacturing setup and the beginning of production of the amphibious sport plane. The financing was led by investors Satyen Patel and Bart Becht, who have deep expertise in building consumer product companies. Patel has been associated with a top IT- BPO firm and worked at senior positions with global brands like Pepsi-Cola International and Nike. Icon is looking at India to set up a supply chain base for spares and other essential components, besides

Subsidy helps 8m elders

Beijing: Old-age subsidies granted by the Chinese government has benefited around eight million people across the country, a minister said. Minister of Civil Affairs Li Liguo said the old-age subsidy system has been expanded to 14 provinces. It is now benefiting eight million citizens aged above 80, Xinhua reported. Last year, only six provinces had introduced the system. Li said the ministry will continue to push other provinces to establish the system so as to better support aged people meet their daily needs.

trying to focus on the growing market of high net-worth individuals who could be interested in buying this aircraft, Patel said on phone from the US. Other investors include Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, former Chairman and CEO of Boeing Phil Condit and several top Silicon Valley venture capitalists. The company was started in 2005 by CEO Kirk Hawkins and COO Steen Strand, who met at Stanford University while pursuing degrees in business and product design, respectively. We have a two-pronged strategy for India that will be part of our global strategic plan which will be finalised over the next 3-6 months. India features very importantly in our plans, Patel, who is now on the Icon Board, said.

The first part of the strategy is to source components for the aircraft, making India an important and reliable supply base along with China, he said. We will try to develop a supply chain with Indian firms. We may also look at starting a sub-assembly in India in the long run, he said, noting that HAL and Indian firms were already manufacturing components for various aircraft produced by Airbus and Boeing, including the super-jumbo A-380s and B-777s. They were also associated with fighter jets like the MiG aircraft series. Based on our surveys, we could also look at international production line. But all these have to be discussed and finalised, Patel said. The second part of the Icon strategy would be to study the market

for the A5 planes in India. It is a fairly affordable product for high net-worth individuals who can carry out short and quick business trips, Patel said. We are already looking at markets in the US, Canada, Western Europe and the Middle East, he said, adding that since the aircraft was an affordable luxury and there are a considerable number of buyers of such products in India, we feel the country has a potential to become a market for this aircraft. Patel said A5 could be flown for short business trips from a city to satellite locations around it. You can fly from Pune to Nagpur or Mumbai or from Ahmedabad to Jamnagar or Surat. It has a range of 50 miles with 20 gallons of gas, he said. IANS

merican singer Aaron Carter is considering taking legal action against a US tabloid which quoted him saying that pop legend Michael Jackson offered him cocaine when he was a teenager. Carter, a long-time friend of Jackson, reportedly told OK! magazines Daphne Barak that the King of Pop offered him wine and drugs when he was 15. He said this in an interview that recently ran in the US and Australian issues of the publication. The young singer insisted he did not make the remarks. Jacksons older brother Randy claims Carter is looking at legal options, reports contactmusic.com. I was suspicious about the comment... From what I understand, Carter has already denied ever making that statement and he is considering suing OK magazine. When negative things like this surface, it is hard not to have an emotional reaction. But the truth eventually comes out, Randy posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

amir Khans home production Delhi Belly has broken the dry spell at box office by earning Rs 15.65 crore on its first two days despite being an adult comedy, while Amitabh Bachchans family entertainer Bbuddah...Hoga Teraa Baap (BHTB) is at Rs.4.26 crore. The opening collection for AB Corps Rs 10 crore Bbuddah Hoga Terra Baap was Rs.1.91 crore, but it picked up on Saturday by grossing Rs.2.35, said film critic Taran Adarsh on his Twitter page. Bbuddah HTB wouldve collected double/triple of what it has, had it averted clash with other films. Wouldve got more screens also, he wrote. Anant Verma, director and business head, DT Cinemas said both the films are doing great, however, Delhi Belly is slightly better as it has more shows than Bbuddah.. Moreover, it caters to the young crowd, while Bbuddah.. is meant for family. Delhi Belly has an interesting concept and it has been promoted in such a way that the audience know what to expect from it, said Verma. Made at a budget of Rs 25 crore including print and publicity, Imran Khanstarrer earned Rs 7.15 crore friday and Rs 8.50 crore on Saturday. ctress Salma Hayeks husband Francois-Henri Pinault has a secret love child with supermodel Linda Evangelista, court papers reveal. The court papers, filed by Evangelista, say he got both women pregnant in the same year. The supermodel gave birth to a boy in late 2006, while Hayek gave birth to daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault in September 2007. A source, who has seen the court papers, told People magazine: In the filing, it says the child was born out of wedlock to (petitioner) Linda Evangelista, 46, and that (Pinault) acknowledged (her) allegation. It says, It is decided that Pinault is the father of (Evangelistas son), Augustin James. All thats left is for a magistrate to go over the fathers filings and make a determination of support, which will last until the child is 21. (Pinault) is asking to be able to testify by phone, the source added. It is unclear how much Hayek, who met Pinault, a French business tycoon, in 2006, knew about the cover up. At that time Pinault was dating Evangelista.

Amitabh, Delhi Belly captures the urban, money-iseverything, foul-mouthed India with Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapoor in the lead roles. However, considering the budget and genre of the two films, both are doing well. In fact, in some multiplexes Bbuddah... is giving neck to neck competition to Delhi Belly. The response has been good. All the shows of Delhi Belly and Bbuddah.., are going houseful. Yesterday Delhi Belly was 99 percent while Bbuddah was 98.5 percent, said Rakesh Warikoo, general manager (operations) Spice Cinemas, who are running 18 shows of Delhi Belly and eight shows of Bbuddah... Hoga Teraa Baap. Yogesh Raizada of Waves Cinemas sees Delhi Belly doing well in the long run and suggests Bbuddah... is a complete masala film and a family entertainer. It is Amitabh all the way. All the performances are also good. It makes for an enjoyable watch, he said. Delhi Belly cannot be watched with parents due to its language. However, the film is likely to run for long time, although it is true, with the release of Murder 2 next week, the business will get affected to some extent, he added.
