SC nod to impeachment motion of Dinakaran
New Delhi: In a setback to Sikkim High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran, the Supreme Court today refused to quash some of the charges framed against him by a Rajya Sabha-appointed panel looking into allegations of corrupt practices and misconduct against him. A bench headed by Justice G S Singhvi, however, allowed Dinakarans plea seeking removal of senior advocate P P Rao from the inquiry panel. The bench asked Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President Hamid Ansari to reconstitute the panel by replacing Rao with another distinguished jurist. The court, however, made it clear that Dinakaran will be facing the same charges which were framed by the three-member committee comprising Supreme Court judge Justice Aftab Alam, Karnataka High Court Chief Justice J S Khehar and senior advocate P P Rao. The apex court had also rejected Sharans contention that the panel can neither conduct its own probe nor frame any additional charges as it is prohibited under Section 3 of the Judges Inquiry Act. How can you say that? Supposing someone fabricates documents and submits it to the Speaker or Chairman as the case may be. The members on the basis of the fabricated documents adopt the notice of motion. Should the committee not scrutinise the material? the bench had asked. They are legally trained minds who can detect the fabricated material. In fact, it would offer protection to a judge also from baseless allegations, the bench had said. PTI

Bangalore: The online retail industry in India is likely to be worth Rs 7,000 crore by 2015 due to easy availability of broadband services and increasing internet penetration across the country, apex industry body Assocham has said today. Buying-selling trends received from leading online shopping portals indicate the online retail market currently stands at Rs 2,000 crore and is growing at a steady annual rate of 35 percent. India is set to become the third largest nation of internet users in the next two years with a large chunk of youngsters eager to adopt new technologies with rapidly changing lifestyles. A booming economy and rising disposable incomes have contributed to the evolution of online shopping, said D S Rawat, secretary-general of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), releasing findings of a random survey conducted during January to June 2011 in 10 cities in which 5,000 shoppers were interviewed. Earlier, most online shoppers used to evaluate options by gathering information on available products and prices or buy low-value items like gift products but finally opted for final transactions at the traditional retail outlets. But now the trend is changing fast. Leading companies have gauged the potential of online retail industry and are gearing up fast to cash in, said Mr Rawat. The survey conducted by Assocham Social Development Foundation (ASDF) involved interactions with 500 shoppers in the age group of 16 to 35 years each in ten cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Lucknow and Jaipur.
About 40 percent of those surveyed across these cities said they prefer to shop online considering convenience to shop anytime during the 24 hours and one can collect detailed product information. Besides,
one can research variety of products available and can easily compare prices from different vendors anywhere in the world.
times and shop owners relationship with loyal customers. A meagre 15 percent of shoppers said they prefer to shop at specialty stores rather than making a voyage to a mall or looking for a good bargain at
traditional markets as they can get specific stuff from specific stores. Consumers in Mumbai ranked number one among top five cities, with almost 65 percent of Mumbaikars saying they prefer shopping online and citied rising fuel prices as one of the primary reason they do not want to loiter around malls, traditional shopping hubs. Ahmedabad ranked second where almost 55 percent of respondents said they prefer shopping followed by Delhi where 45 percent of consumers said they prefer shopping online. Shoppers in Bangalore ranked on 5th spot with 30 percent of respondents saying they prefer to shop online, whereas 35 percent of shoppers (mostly youngsters) said they prefer to stroll through malls for their shopping needs. About 15 percent of respondents said they prefer to shop at neighborhood markets and around 20 percent of them opted for shopping at specialty stores to buy specific commodities like groceries, apparels, toiletries, stationary etc. Facilities like free shipping, product ratings/reviews, multiple payment options, product demonstration videos and free return policy largely influence the purchasing decision of consumers shopping online, concluded the survey. Of those who are averse to shopping online cited various reasons like prefer to research products and services online and then actually buy them from a store (30 percent), find delivery costs too high (20 percent), dont want to share personal financial information online (25 percent), lack of trust on whether products would be delivered in good condition (15 percent), dont have a credit/debit card (10 percent).

Hyderabad: The Telangana movement today gathered further steam with TRS President K Chandrasekhar Rao and party MP Vijay Shanthi resigning from their Lok Sabha membership in support of the demand for a separate state. Chadrasekhar Rao and Shanthi faxed their resignation letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker. Rao would meet the Speaker personally in a day or two, TRS sources said. State Textiles Minister Shankar Rao, who is in the US, has also faxed his resignation to the Deputy Speaker, taking the total number of state ministers who have quit to 12. However, Rao has only resigned from the assembly and not from the cabinet. 75 MLAs and a dozen MPs had quit yesterday
to mount pressure on the Centre for an early announcement in favour of separate statehood demand. Chandrasekhar Rao represents the Mahaboobnagar Lok Sabha constituency, while Shanthi represents the Medak constituency. TRS and the Telangana political Joint Action Committee (JAC) have been demanding en masse resignations by MPs, MLAs of Congress and TDP to force the Centre to accept the separate statehood demand. Speaking at a meeting here last night, Chandrasekhar Rao described the resignations of public representatives as historical and demanded that the Centre take the en masse resignations into cognisance for accepting the demand. Roseau (Dominica): He might have been the most prolific Indian scorer in the ongoing Test series but senior Indian batsman Rahul Dravid says it has not been easy as he has had to adjust to the most challenging West Indian tracks in his four visits here. The two tracks (in the series) have been the toughest I have played on in my four trips (to the Caribbean), claimed Dravid ahead of the final Test starting here Wednesday. From what I believe, this pitch too would have pace and bounce, he said. Dravid is the leading scorer of the series from both sides, having made 212 runs from four innings at an average of 53.00. India, leading 1-0 in the three-Test series, face a litmus test to come out unscathed from the final game. Dravid has no doubt that his team would, by the time the match is over. Everybody wants to finish on a good note. Having said so, we need five days of big performance. I believe we have the team to win the Test. The attitude within the squad is very positive, he said. We would have liked to win in Barbados. But losing 130 overs due to rain was disappointing. We were on a roll, from the second innings onwards, he said. . India had set a target of 280 runs on the final day and West Indies were on the verge of losing at 202 for seven when rain and
bad light allowed them to live another day. Bowling has been very good. Both the tracks were slightly tilted in favour of batsmen which is good. These wickets have had a lot of pace and bounce. But they have been good cricket wickets. They have been good advertisement for Test cricket, he said. Dravid might have found these tracks merely challenging but it has been absolutely devastating for a few young batsmen, notably Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli, who have been miserable failures. These tracks have been hard on batsmen. The quality of bowling has made it very
challenging. Our batting hasnt fired but in the context of wickets and series, we havent done too badly. Its not easy for young batsmen. These tracks probably have been the toughest they would come across in their careers. In that respect they would have learnt a lot and it would hold them in good stead, he said. Dravid was all praise for Indian bowling, especially Ishant Sharma, and marveled at the way the slip cordon has performed in the series. Our bowling has been exceptional. Our slip catching has been top class. Its a great positive. PTI

SMOOTH TRAFFIC
Two Bangalore engineering students have developed a smart traffic signal system that is not preset to the timings of a clock. The new system reads traffic density and then varies the signal light time, allowing smoother flow of traffic, Abhay K Kothari and Nipun Singh Chauhan explain to Aknisree Karthik
raffic is a nightmare in Bangalore that is getting scarier by the day. The traffic police department has been expending all its wit and resources to put some order into this chaotic rush of vehicles. Two engineering students from MVJ College of Engineering have found a solution that could solve some of the traffic problems in the city. Traffic signal control, innovated by Abhay K Kothari and Nipun Singh Chauhan, changes the signal light depending on the traffic density. The city has 35 lakh vehicles and the country four crore. Due to this high volume, traffic congestion is a major problem in the country, which was what prompted the two students to come up with a project to find a solution. In the city, the traffic light is set to a constant time, and it changes only accordingly, whether there is traffic at that signal or not. This increases the waiting period and adds to the congestion and frustration among vehicle users, Abhay Kothari told Bangalore Beat. The project aims to reduce the waiting time at junctions by constantly monitoring the traffic density, using cameras placed at vantage points. The traffic signals are made to change depending on the number of vehicles. For example, at a four-way traffic signal, if the density is huge on one side and less on the other, then the light will be green for a longer time at the side where the traffic is more for the passing vehicles and will be for a shorter duration on the other side. The system needs to be configured initially for every road, based on the dimension of the road. The system is completely automated and requires no human supervision. Placement of cameras at correct points is crucial, since a proper field of view is essential for the system to provide the best possible results, Nipun explained to Bangalore Beat. This system is more advantageous than the one which uses sensors placed un-

Kids risk ill health, shorter life with too much salt
London: Health experts in Britain have warned that the processed foods and sauces at the heart of the nations diet are actually fuelling a dangerous daily overdose of salt and putting childrens health at risk. Children are routinely eating too much salt, risking ill health and a shorter life. Typical amounts are at least 50 percent more than the recommended daily maximum but some consume almost double. High salt consumption pushes up blood pressure, which in the long term can lead to strokes and heart attacks. These are the countrys biggest causes of death and disability, Daily Mail reported. For their study, health campaigners took two typical daily menus enjoyed by many children. They calculated the salt content to be 9.3g to 9.6g. However, for a child aged seven to ten, the recommended maximum is just 5g. Eating 9.6g of salt in a day would be 92 percent above this amount nearly double. Safe daily amounts of salt vary depending on age and size, starting at one gram or less for babies. If the entire nation cuts down to these levels, doctors estimate that 70,000 heart attacks and strokes would be prevented in just one year! Katharine Jenner of the Consensus Action on Salt and Health, which has been campaigning for food manufacturers and supermarkets to remove hidden salt, said: Popular foods like bread, cereal, baked beans, cheese, tomato sauce and processed meats are some of the biggest culprits. So try not to feed your child them every day. Also, throw away the salt cellar. If you eat food which tastes less salty, your taste buds adapt really quickly. She said: The higher the blood pressure in childhood, the higher the blood pressure will be in adulthood... By getting your child used to less salt, you are protecting their health in the long term. sion acquisition tool are then passed on to the vision assistant tool which is used to divide the road into multiple regions of interest (ROIs). t These ROIs are used to calculate the traffic density by using the histogram method t The values obtained from the histogram form the basis of determining the density of traffic for the road. t These values can vary from one road to another depending on the width, traffic conditions as well as the lighting of the road t This data for each ROI is further processed to generate the amount of time for which the traffic lights should remain red and/or green.

These could get damaged due to environmental changes like rain, vibrations from and weight of heavy vehicles. Our project can be used by increasing the range of the existing infrastructure of traffic cameras that have already been deployed with very little or no additional cost, he said. The placement of cameras is the most difficult to figure out. It is configured according to the length and breadth of the road. The project requires some further development and we have plans to contact officials concerned to approve and implement this once we are finished with all the necessary testing and enhancements, said Nipun Singh Chauhan and Abhay Kothari.
London: British scientists claim to have found that tree frogs possess specially adapted self-cleaning feet, a finding which may have practical applications for the medical industry. Tree frog feet may provide a design for self-cleaning sticky surfaces, which could be useful for a wide range of products especially in contaminating environments medical bandages, tyre performance, and even long lasting adhesives, said lead scientist Niall Crawford of University of Glasgow. Tree frogs have sticky pads on their toes that they use to cling on in difficult situations, but until now it was unclear how they prevent these pads from picking up dirt. Interestingly the same factors that allow tree frogs to cling on also provide a self cleaning service. To make their feet sticky tree frogs secrete mucus, they can then increase their adhesion by moving their feet against the surface to create friction. We have now shown that the mucus combined with this movement allows the frogs to clean their feet as they walk, said Crawford. In their research, the scientists placed the Whites tree frogs on a rotatable platform and measured the angles at which the frog lost its grip. When the experiment was repeated with frogs whose feet were contaminated with dust they lost grip initially but if they took a few steps their adhesive forces were recovered, sciencecodex.com reported. When the frogs did not move the ad-

Washington: Have you ever wondered why you cant stop eating just one potato chip? Its because the fats in these foods help trigger a marijuana-like chemical in body which makes them hard to resist, scientists have found. Researchers at the University of California Irvine (ICI) found that fats in these foods trigger a surprising biological mechanism that produces natural marijuana-like chemicals in the body called endocannabinoids, which increases the craving for more fatty food. In their study, appeared online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers discovered that when rats tasted something fatty, cells in their upper gut started producing endocannabinoids. Sugars and proteins, the researchers noted, did not have this effect. The process starts on the tongue, where fats in food generate a signal that travels first to the brain and then through a nerve bundle called the vagus to the intestines. There, the signal stimulates the production of endocannabinoids, which initiates a surge in cell signalling that prompts the wanton intake of fatty foods, probably by initiating the release of digestive chemicals linked to hunger and satiety that compel us to eat more, the researchers said. The findings suggest it might be possible to curb this tendency by obstructing endocannabinoid activity, for example, by using drugs that clog cannabinoid receptors, said Daniele Piomelli, who led the ICI study. Since these drugs wouldnt need to enter the brain, they shouldnt cause the central side effects anxiety and depression seen when endocannabinoid signalling is blocked in the brain, he noted.
hesive forces recovered much more slowly. This shows that just taking a step enables frogs to clean their feet and restore their adhesion ability, Crawford said. Whites tree frogs have tiny hexagonal patterns on their feet, which allow some parts of the pad to remain in contact with the surface and create friction, whilst the channels between allow the mucus to
spread throughout the pad. This mucus at once allows the frog to stick and then, when they move, also carries away any dirt. If this can be translated into a manmade design it may provide a re-useable, effective adhesive, say the scientists. The findings have been presented at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Conference in Glasgow. PTI
Piomelli said that from an evolutionary standpoint, theres a compelling need for animals to consume fats, which are scarce in nature but crucial for proper cell functioning. In contemporary human society, however, fats are readily available, and the innate drive to eat fatty foods leads to obesity, diabetes and cancer. This is the first demonstration that endocannabinoid signalling in the gut plays an important role in regulating fat intake, Louise Turner Arnold Chair in the Neurosciences and professor of pharmacology added. British PM in Afghan
as soldier goes missing
Camp Bastion (Afghanistan): British Prime Minister David Cameron was forced yesterday to scrap a visit to an Afghan town he had held up as an example of improved security after a soldier went missing in the area. International forces have launched a huge manhunt for the British soldier, who disappeared just hours before Cameron began a surprise visit to southern Helmand province to announce Britain would withdraw more of its 9,500 troops. Cameron said he had cancelled a planned trip to Lashkar Gah, where Britain is handing over control of security to Afghan forces, so British helicopters and ground forces could continue their hunt. I arrived here today and received the news about this very worrying incident of a British soldier going missing in central Helmand, he told reporters after he arrived on a Royal Air Force plane at the Camp Bastion base. I was just very clear that youve got something like that absolutely urgent taking place, where you want to concentrate all the assets and ability that you have to try and find this person and bring it to the right conclusion.
Britains Prime Minister David Cameron talks with British and US troops during a visit at Camp Bastion, outside Lashkar Gah, yesterday. Its just absolute common sense that the military should concentrate on the most important requirement of all which is to help and find this person rather than to bother flying me around. Afghan police in the southern province of Helmand, where mostly American and British troops are fighting the Taliban insurgency, said the man had been kidnapped in the Gereshk area of Nahri Sarraj district. The Taliban claimed that its fighters had kidnapped and killed a British soldier in Helmand, but there was no independent confirmation and the militia is known to routinely exaggerate its claims. Lashkar Gah was one of seven initial handover areas in Afghanistan identified by foreign forces ahead of a full transfer of responsibility across the country and the withdrawal of all western combat troops by the end of 2014. After years of Taliban violence Lashkar Gah was seen as the most unlikely candidate among those chosen for early transition. AFP

Cairo: An Egyptian court has released on bail 14 people accused of killing protesters during the revolt that led to the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak. The court in the port city of Suez Monday granted bail of 10,000 Egyptian pounds (around $1,680) each to the former security chief of Suez, nine policemen, one businessman and his three sons, the Al Masry al Youm daily reported. Angry families of the victims, however, forced security officials to evacuate the courtroom. The suspects face charges of killing antiMubarak protesters during the uprising that began Jan 25 and led to Mubaraks resignation Feb 11 after nearly 30 years in power. Suez saw the most violent clashes between protesters and police during the 18day protests. At least 840 people were killed and more than 6,000 wounded during the uprising, according to human rights group Amnesty International. Along with his sons Alaa and Gamal, Mubarak has been charged with premeditated murder of protesters in the revolt. If found guilty, he could face the death penalty. Mubarak denies all charges. IANS
In the study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, Singh and his colleagues analysed 14 double-blind, randomised, controlled clinical trials involving more than 8,200 healthy people who received either varenicline or a placebo. Varenicline made by Pfizer is sold in many countries including India under the brand-name Chantix. While the number of people who died in each group was the same (seven), the researchers found that the risk of a major harmful cardiovascular event requiring hospitalisation such as a heart attack or arrhythmia was 72 percent in the varenicline arms. None of the studies followed people for longer than a year. The average age of study participants was less than 45 years and the majority were men. Varenicline has been shown to increase the chances of a successful quit attempt, compared to unassisted smoking cessation attempts. But overall, the majority of smokers who quit do so without any assistance at all. Moreover, Singh noted, varenicline already carries a boxed warning the Food and Drug Administrations highest level of caution because of its association with suicidal thoughts and behaviours. We notified the FDA of our cardiovascular safety concerns with Chantix earlier this year, Singh said. On June 16, the FDA announced that on the basis of a 700-person study, people with existing heart disease who use varenicline have a slightly increased risk of a heart attack or other cardiovascular event. But Singhs study found that varenicline substantially increased the risk of a serious cardiovascular event even among smokers without heart disease. I think our new research shifts the risk-benefit profile of varenicline. People should be concerned. They dont need Chantix to quit and this is another reason to consider avoiding Chantix altogether, Singh said.

Washington: Antimicrobial copper surfaces could be one way of minimising hospital infections, since they rapidly kill bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens. The latest trial, conducted at three US facilities has shown that the use of antimicrobial copper surfaces in intensive care units cuts down risks of hospital infection by 40.4 percent. Antimicrobial copper touch surfaces on door knobs, railings and tray tables are made from copper alloys, such as brass and bronze, to prevent infections. These parts are often touched by people in hospitals and clinics, becoming sources of infection. Researchers at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York, the Medical University of South Carolina and the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Centre, replaced bed rails, overbed tray tables, nurse call buttons and IV poles with antimicrobial copper versions, according to a Sloan Kettering statement. Data presented by trial leader
Michael Schmidt, professor of microbiology and immunology at Sloan Kettering, demonstrated a 97 percent reduction in surface pathogens in rooms with copper surfaces. Schmidt said: Bacteria present on ICU room surfaces are probably responsible for 35-80 percent of patient infections, demonstrating how critical it is to keep hospitals clean. The copper objects used in the clinical trial supplemented cleaning protocols, lowered microbial levels, and resulted in a statistically significant reduction in the number of infections contracted by patients treated in those rooms, he said. Extensive lab tests have demonstrated coppers antimicrobial efficacy against key organisms responsible for these infections, and clinical trials around the world are now reporting on its efficacy in busy, real-world environments, Schimidt concluded. trying to focus on the growing market of high net-worth individuals who could be interested in buying this aircraft, Patel said on phone from the US. Other investors include Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, former Chairman and CEO of Boeing Phil Condit and several top Silicon Valley venture capitalists. The company was started in 2005 by CEO Kirk Hawkins and COO Steen Strand, who met at Stanford University while pursuing degrees in business and product design, respectively. We have a two-pronged strategy for India that will be part of our global strategic plan which will be finalised over the next 3-6 months. India features very importantly in our plans, Patel, who is now on the Icon Board, said.
The first part of the strategy is to source components for the aircraft, making India an important and reliable supply base along with China, he said. We will try to develop a supply chain with Indian firms. We may also look at starting a sub-assembly in India in the long run, he said, noting that HAL and Indian firms were already manufacturing components for various aircraft produced by Airbus and Boeing, including the super-jumbo A-380s and B-777s. They were also associated with fighter jets like the MiG aircraft series. Based on our surveys, we could also look at international production line. But all these have to be discussed and finalised, Patel said. The second part of the Icon strategy would be to study the market
for the A5 planes in India. It is a fairly affordable product for high net-worth individuals who can carry out short and quick business trips, Patel said. We are already looking at markets in the US, Canada, Western Europe and the Middle East, he said, adding that since the aircraft was an affordable luxury and there are a considerable number of buyers of such products in India, we feel the country has a potential to become a market for this aircraft. Patel said A5 could be flown for short business trips from a city to satellite locations around it. You can fly from Pune to Nagpur or Mumbai or from Ahmedabad to Jamnagar or Surat. It has a range of 50 miles with 20 gallons of gas, he said. IANS

merican singer Aaron Carter is considering taking legal action against a US tabloid which quoted him saying that pop legend Michael Jackson offered him cocaine when he was a teenager. Carter, a long-time friend of Jackson, reportedly told OK! magazines Daphne Barak that the King of Pop offered him wine and drugs when he was 15. He said this in an interview that recently ran in the US and Australian issues of the publication. The young singer insisted he did not make the remarks. Jacksons older brother Randy claims Carter is looking at legal options, reports contactmusic.com. I was suspicious about the comment... From what I understand, Carter has already denied ever making that statement and he is considering suing OK magazine. When negative things like this surface, it is hard not to have an emotional reaction. But the truth eventually comes out, Randy posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Amitabh, Delhi Belly captures the urban, money-iseverything, foul-mouthed India with Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunal Roy Kapoor in the lead roles. However, considering the budget and genre of the two films, both are doing well. In fact, in some multiplexes Bbuddah... is giving neck to neck competition to Delhi Belly. The response has been good. All the shows of Delhi Belly and Bbuddah.., are going houseful. Yesterday Delhi Belly was 99 percent while Bbuddah was 98.5 percent, said Rakesh Warikoo, general manager (operations) Spice Cinemas, who are running 18 shows of Delhi Belly and eight shows of Bbuddah... Hoga Teraa Baap. Yogesh Raizada of Waves Cinemas sees Delhi Belly doing well in the long run and suggests Bbuddah... is a complete masala film and a family entertainer. It is Amitabh all the way. All the performances are also good. It makes for an enjoyable watch, he said. Delhi Belly cannot be watched with parents due to its language. However, the film is likely to run for long time, although it is true, with the release of Murder 2 next week, the business will get affected to some extent, he added.

ex And The City actress Kim Cattrall is happy to look her age. I love setting the gauntlet down and saying, This is what I look like without make-up and great lighting. Cattrall would like to follow the path of actresses Dame Judi Dench and Dame Helen Mirren who are known for their acting skills. I want to go and be like the actresses who have lines on their face, look their age and are not frightened of portraying actresses who are such, she added.
