Best Practices of Cotton Growing

Cotton Leave Curl Virus (CLCV) infestation is a persistent problem for Pakistani cotton since 1992. To be able to resist against CLCV, change in sowing date to Feb-Mar showed success in terms of yield increase.

Recognizing the importance of weeds management and its impact on yield, chemical methods were used on pre and post emergence stages of weeds. For structural development, health & growth of plant, nutritional support was provided at all stages by using

Guidelines

Management of High Yield

Cotton plant being perennial with indeterminate growth habit has the most complex structure of any major field crop. Associated with its complex growth habit is an extreme sensitivity to adverse environmental conditions reflected in excessive fruit abscission. Yield is essentially controlled by the genetics of the plant and the environment. These in turn are further modified by cultural practices. At agronomic level, yield may be considered in terms of its major components: boll number per unit area multiplied with the average boll weight. Growth of the plant and development of bolls depends on the production of dry matter by photosynthesis. The necessary carbohydrate products of photosynthesis need to be translocated to the developing fruits which in turn need to be protected from pests. The shedding or abscission of squares and young bolls is a natural occurrence in cotton that is accentuated by adverse environmental weather, conditions including extended stress, overcast nutrient

International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) has publicized in one of its research that for one bale of cotton of 480lb (220 kg), 60 lb of N, 25 to 30 lb of P and 60 lb of K would be required. (Ref: IPNI Plant Nutrition Today, Spring 2011 No. 7 http://www.ipni.net/pnt) JAS has further explained these requirements by converting them as per Pakistani standard which is one bale of cotton weight to 170 kg and for it 22kg of N, 14kg of P and 22kg of K will be required. For different target yields NPK requirement will be as follows: Target Yield 90 70 50 30
mands mands mands mands

No. of Bales 7.1 5.5 3.9 2.4

N (kg) 155 121 86 52

P (kg) 99 77 55 33

K (kg) 155 121 86 52

By considering above requirement of NPK and securing appropriate availability in relation with Soil analysis, cotton yield from 30 to 90 mands can be targeted. In addition to the basic NPK requirements, insects management along with weeds and overall nutritions management are also required to get the desired yield.

deficiencies, and insect damage. Under typical environmental stress, cotton plant will shed only small bolls and small to medium size squares. Actually, nutritional stresses alter the hormone balance which in turn causes fruit abscission. JAS range propose variety of products, which improve hormones availability and helps stress management of plants at any stage, in turn supporting Agronmicas better boll retention. NPK Requirement in relation to Target Yield

A major factor affecting both cotton yield and quality is the availability of adequate and balanced nutrition. Each nutrient has specific role within plant and unless plants demands are met, production would be impacted; hence for different target yields nutritions requirements will be different.

JAS Recommendations for Early Sown Cotton

Based on strategy for plant health & insect management our recommendations are as follows:
