English Firsthand is primarily a listening/speaking course with grammar/reading/writing activities to support those listening/speaking goals. Naturally, the best was to practice conversation is with a partner. For that reason, many teachers try to be strict about attendance requirements. However, the current H1N1 (Swine flu) situation has created a problem for some classes. Students who have or may have the flu really need to stay away from class, both so they can recover and so they dont contaminate other students. The English Firsthand authors are all full-time teachers. They created these plans initially for their own students. Although they have class attendance requirements, student who have to be absent can do the home-study plan to make up for missed days. The plans are written in a simple, consistent format to make it easier for students to do them on their own, without particular teacher explanation or support. Two of the steps, Conversation and Language Check suggest using the website www.efcafe.com. If that isnt practical, those items can be done in the textbook. The plans are available in two forms: As a .pdf file that can be copied and given to the students who need it. As a .doc file that can be modified as the teacher desires. We hope these plans help your students keep up and make progress, even when they cant be in class. The English Firsthand Team December, 2009
