QUESTION 2 a) An object with a mass of 0.5 kg is undergoing simple harmonic motion on the end of a horizontal spring with a spring constant k = 400 N/m. When the object is 0.012 m from its equilibrium position, it is observed to have a speed of 0.3 m/s. Calculate: i) ii) iii) the amplitude of the motion, the maximum speed attained by the object during its motion, and the total energy of the object at any point of its motion. (7 marks) b) A man enters a tall tower, needing to know its height. He notes that a long pendulum extends from the ceiling almost to the floor and the period is 12 s. How tall is the tower? (3 marks)

QUESTION 3 a) A train sounds its horn as it approaches an intersection. The horn can be heard at a level of 50 dB by an observer 10 km away. i) ii) What is the average power generated by the horn? What intensity level of the horn's sound is observed by someone waiting at an intersection 50 m from the train?

QUESTION 4 a) A metal cube 5.00 cm on each side has a mass of 300 g is hung with string in air. Calculate the tension of the string if the object is fully submerged in a liquid that has a density of 1200 kg/m3. (acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 mis2) (3 marks) The diameter of the main water pipe that supplies water to a double storey house is 4.00 cm. It supplies water at a rate of 500 cm3/s. However, the diameter of the pipe is reduce to 2.00 cm in the bathroom upstairs. Determine i) ii) the speed of the water flowing in the main pipe. the water pressure difference between the pipe in the bathroom and the main pipe. The height of the bathroom is 5 m above ground and the speed of the water flowing in the water pipe in the bathroom is 1.59 m/s. (p w = 1000 kg/m3) (7 marks)

If the coefficient of conductivity is 2.093 x 10"3 J/cm.s. C, and the inner and outer surfaces are at 0 C and 30 C respectively. What is the heat loss by conduction through this door in 1 minute?
