GENERAL
This service bulletin provides the necessary information to inspect, lubricate, and repair the Type BC capsule wheel assemblies. Inspection and lubrication are covered under the maintenance topic followed by the repair instructions covered under the topic, Wheel Assembly Repair. Type BC capsule wheel assemblies are available in sizes from 9 to 15 inches. These wheels are utilized on the trolley drive and idler wheel applications. MAINTENANCE machinery while inspections and repairs are being performed. 2. Disconnect, lock open, and tag the power source which feeds the equipment being work upon. 3. Check for loose, damaged or missing hardware. Replace damaged or missing hardware immediately. Tighten loose hardware to the proper torque as listed under the repair topic. 4. Inspect the wheel anges for wear and signs of the ange rubbing against the rail. 5. Inspect the wheel for at spots and any unusual wear patterns or markings. 6. Inspect the wheel bearings for improper lubrication or excessive wear. 7. Inspect the wheel for excessive oat.
General
The following topics cover the general inspection which should be periodically performed on wheel assemblies. Lubrication information, specications, and bolt torques are also provided under this topic.
NOTICE Inspection
Periodic inspections of the wheel assemblies are recommended to ensure proper operation and lubrication. The frequency of the inspection depends on the operating environment of the wheel assemblies. Inspection of the wheel assemblies should include, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: Perform inspection as follows: 1. Move crane to a suitable area away from machinery and personnel where the inspection can be performed. Wheel oat is the amount the wheel moves across the rail from ange to ange. Wheel oat is approximately 3/4 to 1 inch for straight wheels, and 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches for tapered wheels. If any of the above conditions exist, repair or replace the damaged parts as described under the repair topic.
Lubrication
Lubr ication of the wheel bear ings is required periodically. The amount and frequency of lubrication will depend on the operating environment of the wheel assemblies. However it is recommended that lubrication periods never exceed three months. The bearing housings on each side of the wheel assemblies are provided with a lube tting to allow application of grease to the wheel bearings. Apply multipurpose grease to each lube tting at three month intervals, or shorter periods if usage dictates the need.

Unintentional crane movement or hazardous voltage can cause severe injury or death during maintenance or service. Before working on the wheel assemblies shut down the operation of the crane, disconnect electrical power, use lockout and tagout procedures, and try controls to verify power is removed. 2. Disconnect, lock out, and tag the power source which feeds the equipment being worked upon. 3. Disconnect or remove the drive gear case or line shaft coupling as necessary, as described under the applicable procedures outlined in the service instructions specic to the drive gear case.

NOTICE
There are various types of greases some of which are not compatible with each other. Thickeners such as clay base, polyurea or calcium may result in incompatibilities. Always consult your lubricant supplier before changing types or brands of grease to prevent possible problems
NOTICE
The dr ive gear case may not need to be removed to service the wheel assembly, it may only need to be disconnected from the drive axle. Determine this by visually inspecting the type of gear case utilized, and the manner in which it is connected to the driven wheel.

General
The repair of the wheel assemblies is limited to the replacement of worn or damaged components. Refer to the following procedures for information on the removal, disassembly, cleaning and inspection, assembly, and installation of the Type BC capsule heel assemblies Working on overhead crane bridge or trolley wheels without rst blocking the structure to prevent movement is hazardous, and may result in the injury or death of personnel. Install wheel chocks or other blocking devices at each wheel location prior to servicing a wheel assembly. 4. Install wheel chocks on the wheel assemblies opposite the wheel being serviced. Secure chocks to the rail to prevent movement of the trolley during the following procedures. 5. Jack up the trolley to permit removal of the wheel assembly. Support the trolley using blocking. 6. Remove the capscrews and the lockwashers which secure the bearing capsules to the trolley frame. 7. Using suitable lifting equipment, support the wheel assembly, and pull or pry the bearing capsules out of engagement with the trolley frame. This will permit the wheel assembly to be rolled free of its mounting. 8. Remove the wheel assembly as a complete unit by rolling it from underneath the trolley frame as
Removal
The removal and installation procedures outlined in this publication are general in nature due to the wide range of applications in which these wheels are used. Use the following procedure to remove either a drive or an idler wheel assembly:
NOTICE
The removal and installation the idler wheel assembly is identical to that of the drive wheel assembly with the exception of the removal and installation of the drive gear case, and therefore both are covered by the same procedure. 1. Move the crane to a suitable maintenance area away from personnel and machinery.
2 Type BC Capsule Wheel Assemblies
Disassembly
Disassembly of this wheel assembly is limited to the removal of the bearing capsules from the wheel and axle assembly. This will permit replacement of the bearings. It does not have seals. The wheel and axle assembly is sold and serviced as one unit, and should not be separated. Attempts to separate the axle and wheel assembly will result in the damage of wheel and/ or the axle beyond further use.
Assembly
Assembly of the wheel assembly consists of installing the bearings into the bearing capsules, assembling the capsules to the appropriate sides of the wheel assembly, and installing the lube ttings (see Figure 1, Type BC Wheel Assemblies).
Installation
Use the following procedure to install a drive or idler wheel assembly: 1. Inspect the mating surfaces of the bearing capsules as well as the trolley frame making sure that they are free of burrs, dirt, etc. 2. Apply an antisieze compound to the mating surfaces of the end truck or trolley, and to the mating surfaces of the bearing capsules. This will prevent rusting of the wheel mounting surfaces, thus making future wheel removal easier.
