IncollaborationwiththeUniversityofBristol(UoB),UK(http://www.bris.ac.uk/),KhalifaUniversity of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR), UAE (http://www.kustar.ac.ae/), is establishing a newResearchCentreinVisualSignalAnalysisandProcessing(VSAP).VSAPwilladdressbothsector and regional needs and is now recruiting its first intake of researchers to commence in September/October2011. The primary areas of interest for the proposed Centre lie in image/video fusion, enhancement, detection,classification,trackingandimage/videocommunications: Sensor image/video processing, low light / low contrast imaging, camera autofocus, incompletetargetinformation,contextualstatisticsandprobabilisticmotionmodelling. Distributed sensor processing compressive sensing, robust, efficient and reliable fusion andtransmissionofimage/videosensordataovernoisyandlossychannels. Remotesensingadvancedmultispectralimage/videoanalysistoaddressuniqueregional problems(egpollutionfromdesalinationplants). Biometricsdetectionandrecognitionsystemstosupportmilitaryandsecurityapplications.

These techniques find applications in defence, consumer products and surveillance. Specific applications include: UAV surveillance, IED detection, Remote sensing, Navigation, Planning and Mappingforautonomousvehicles/robotsinhostileenvironments.

MainDuties
SuccessfulcandidateswillworkonjointVSAPprojectsbetweenKUSTARandUoB. PostDocs will provide support for faculty working on VSAP projects. This will include conducting research,helpinsupervisionofstudents,andteachingandadministrativesupport. All PhD students and PostDocs will be expected to travel and spend a significant amount of time (minimum25%)intheirnonhostuniversity. AllPhDstudentswillbeexpectedtojoinKUSTARfulltimeaftercompletionoftheirstudies.

RequiredQualifications
All PhD students and PostDocs will be expected to be independent and highly motivated researchers. PostDocs PostDocapplicantsmusthaveaPh.D.degree(orequivalent)andaprovenabilitytoconduct excellentscientificresearchinVSAPrelatedareas,asevidencedbytheirpublications.

PhDStudents PhD applicants must be UAE nationals, and will be required to meet the admission requirementsofthehostuniversity. PhD applicants to be registered at KUSTAR must have a Master degree with a minimum CGPAof3.0outof4.0orequivalent(e.g.,aminimumof60%inaUKstyleMasterbytaught coursesoraPassinaMasterbyResearch/M.Phil.)inElectricalandComputerEngineering, Computer science, IT, or other relevant specializations. Candidates must have achieved a minimumTOEFLiBTscoreof79oranAcademicIELTSscoreof6.0ortheirequivalent. PhD applicants to be registered at UoB must have as a minimum a 2:1 honours Bachelor degree or equivalent (e.g. a Bachelor degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0) in Engineering,Science,MathematicsorPhysics.CandidatesmusthaveachievedanIELTSscore of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.5 in Writing and Listening and 6.0 in Speaking and Reading.Exemptionsmaybegrantedtostudentswherethereisclearalternativeevidence ofanacceptablestandardofEnglish.
