INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING TRAINING SERIES

Supply Chain Management and Logistics

Prof. I.A. Karimi
National University of Singapore

Introduction This is an introductory course on supply chain management & logistics. It aims to provide
the participants with a broad overview and a comprehensive conceptual understanding of the key terminology, structures, flows, concepts, issues, decisions, methodologies, and applications related to the design, operation, and management of a generic supply chain. The course will use several case study results from industries such as chemicals, computers, airline, automobile, shipping, logistics, pharmaceuticals, etc. to aid the learning. Special emphasis will be on the various components and aspects of the supply chain and how they interact with each other and impact the overall performance and bottomline. The participants will play a computerized game, called Beer game, using their own laptops, to experience for themselves the complex dynamics in a real supply chain using a simulated environment. The course will aim to enable the participants to identify, view, and optimize the relevant supply chain components and issues in an integrated manner to add value for the stakeholders and reduce costs. Representative analytical and modeling methods for optimization and decision support will also be detailed and demonstrated and the role of IT and advanced software tools in enhancing business performance will be highlighted. The course will remove some of the mysticism surrounding and myths behind modeling and optimization, and provide participants with a good grasp of supply chain essentials. The participants will learn the ways and means of evaluating and benchmarking supply chain performance, rationalize the main drivers behind supply chain improvement, and become aware of the main steps and obstacles involved in a real-life project aiming for such improvement. The training methodology will consist of a combination of lectures, discussions, and game. The course will be delivered by an authority in the field of supply chain & logistics modeling and optimization, with vast experience and a good blend of research and consulting in academia and industry.

INSTRUCTORS PROFILE
Dr I.A. Karimi is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the National University
of Singapore. A BTech graduate of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India, he received his MS and PhD from Purdue University, USA, in 1982 & 1984 respectively. He has a unique international mix of academic and industrial experience. He taught as a faculty member at Northwestern University, Evanston, which is a leading private university in the USA. Thereafter, he held a senior research position in DuPont, USA for several years. A leading optimization expert with worldwide recognition in the areas of design, modeling, planning, and scheduling in chemical industry, Prof Karimi has published extensively in a variety of top-tier, international journals in the area of process modeling, planning, scheduling, and optimization. He has accumulated considerable industry experience in chemical logistics and supply chain management. With his unique blend of more than twenty years of research and consulting experience in academia and industry, Prof Karimi has been instrumental in developing several novel and efficient models and methodologies for decision support on several practical problems of local and global relevance in supply chain management and logistics. During his tenure at NUS, he has led several industry-collaborative research and/or consulting projects with a variety of chemical, shipping, and logistics companies and agencies including IBM, Sumitomo Bakelite, Singapore refining company, DuPont, Shell, GlaxoSmithKline, Honeywell, Sembcorp Utilities & Terminals, KNS, Vopak, Danzas, Stolt-Nielson, Odfjell, Berlian Laju Tankers (Indonesia), Jurong Town Corporation, and Maritime & Port Authority (MPA), Singapore. Recently, he led the chemical supply chain portion of a 3-year $1.7 million A*Star project funded by the Agency for Science & Technology Research (A*Star, Singapore) on integrated supply chain networks at The Logistics Institute Asia Pacific. At present, he is leading another two projects on chemical supply chain management and logistics funded by MPA and A*Star. Prof Karimi has more than 25 years of international teaching experience in top universities and has guided more than 50 students in their research theses.
