By Carol Ballard Warren County Report Joy Freemire, first grade teacher at Leslie Fox Keyser Elementary School, won a free two-year Chevy Cruze lease from Front Royals Jack Evans Chevrolet, Inc., and was described as one very excited lady. It was an honor to be nominated by my students and Im thrilled to be driving a new car, Freemire said. Its my first year teaching, I cant imagine how anyone can top this next year! Her name was chosen in a random drawing from nominated teachers in the Warren County School District at the dealership at 15 South Royal Ave. Children were invited to nominate their teachers for weekly chances to win free luncheons for two, and monthly for two movie passes to Royal Cinemas, and a pizza party for the winning teachers class. The ride was originally Jef Keegans idea, said Proscia. As if to expand on his motivation for the idea, Jef added, support is growing each year. Theres a lot of adjustment mentally and physically. The general population is more supportive now than earlier during the Vietnam War, but were trying to teach (the wounded warriors) what they are capable of doing rather than what they used to do, Keegan said. By Carol Ballard Warren County Report On the warm evening of June 17, an enthusiastic crowd of parents, friends, relatives, sweethearts and children gathered in the Warren County High School Gym to go wild for the graduating Warren County Wildcats Class of 011. At one point several beach balls were being tossed around, and the students were laughing, breaking up some of the nervousness that accompanies walking in
front of a huge crowd to receive a hard-earned diploma. They also appeared to be enjoying their sneakiness in managing to keep them from being found. Principal Ernestine J. Jordan, in her opening remark, sweetly said, That was fun, wasnt it? That was a moment, and acknowledged the joy of the day, but as a reminder to keep it under control, added, The school board has authorized me to say that we still have your diplomas. The balls were confiscated.
Graduate Nathan Strother said, Im finally graduated! Just before she spoke, however, 011 Class President Hannah Patrick had the ears and respect minus airborne beach balls-of everyone in the auditorium. Some of her reminiscing and philosophical words included specific incidents in the four years the 184 graduating students spent together and she quoted advice from some wise people. One piece warned not to live in the past. If you do, she noted, this habit could cause you to find yourself when you are fifty years old sitting around with a

Do your best, treat others as you want to be treated and always strive for excellence, she said. When Pamela M. McInnis, superintendent of Warren County Public Schools, told the candidates for graduation, I now declare you graduates of Warren County High School, a loud cheer went up and streamers and hats went with it, celebrating the momentary joy of freedom and marking the beginning of the next phase of their lives.
Bianca Hill - going in the Army - at far left, short brown hair and glasses. There was a growing pile of confiscated beach balls. ently be listening to my advice so really its a win-win situation for me today! The ceremony continued and outstanding students were then awarded scholarships. Jordan congratulated the seniors on receiving a total of more than $900,000 in scholarships to the different colleges, universities and trade schools where theyre headed. She particularly noted the two graduates who are entering the military and asked them to stand up. Bianca is Hill headed to the Army and Frederick Wagner to the Navy and between them they will receive almost $500,000 in aid toward their education. A total of 8 scholarships were given out with several students receiving more than one and more than one student receiving the same kind. Five Athletic awards and scholarships were given. As each outstanding scholar went up to be awarded, loud cheers and screams broke out. The crowd made sure their Wildcats knew how much they were appreciated. As a variation from the very long tradition of choosing a Salutatorian and Valedictorian to speak, this class was promised in the ninth grade that they would not have that competition to look forward to. Finally, though, addressing the students, he told them that it has been an honor and privilege to have been their principal and wanted to give them some simple advice to hopefully transcend the complicated world that they now live in. No matter where youre headed from here, he said, Be quiet; or at least know when its time to be quiet in your soul and listen to the rhythm that guides us through tough times. It is this peace of mind that provides the harmony to our lives. Its always there; you just have to be still enough to hear it In closing, he advised, Take care of the world youre responsible for. The need to levy blame is pointless, so focus on the mountains, rivers and the valleys they protect. The choices you make today will shape the world you live in tomorrow. My question is are we doing this for the right reasons? Mayor Tim Darr prefacing his decisive no vote on the change to November town elections

While some, like Councilman Shae Parker, asked why not? ...
By Roger Bianchini Warren County Report It was as predictable as the unpredictability of the weather the Front Royal Town Councils 4-3 rejection of a citizen-driven initiative to move the towns stand-alone May elections to November to coincide with federal elections and potential voter turnouts of 60 to 70 percent. The only vote that was not apparent from the start of the discussion some eight months ago was Mayor Tim Darrs. But Darr had made it perfectly clear for at least two months that he was not buying into the logic that the switch to November was necessary or an effective means to stimulate increased voter turnout with the goal of breaking the influence of small blocks of special interest groups on town elections with an average 17-percent voter turnout over the past three elections. Over the past eight years the lone town election that bucked the below 0 percent turnout trend was the volatile Wal-mart by the river 004 election that saw a 3-percent turnout bump four incumbents from office. Ironically perhaps, it was one councilman first brought to town office during the higher voter turnout 004 Wal-mart massacre now Mayor Darr who cast the

deciding vote against the switch to November. My question is are we doing this for the right reasons? Darr said in prefacing his tiebreaking no vote. Darr addressed his belief that the call for a change to November elections was a direct result of citizen discontent with some sitting members of council. And he questioned whether council had accumulated enough information over the eight months the discussion has been underway to justify a change in town

out myself. Citizen activist and November supporter Tim Ratigan said while it appeared that Mayor Darr had put a great deal of thought into his vote, he may have lost sight of the forest (greater citizen participation) for the trees of self-justification for continuing a failing system. I dont necessarily agree with him but the outcome, I was not surprised, Ratigan said. I went into this fully expecting it to play out exactly the way it did. Thats why I made that comment This isnt going to go away 01 is less than seven months away. So it looks like were going to have a May campaign. As for the contention it wasnt councils job to make a decision for change, but rather the peoples in a direct referendum, Ratigan said, To me they didnt have the courage to stand up and say I was voted by the people; I represent the people, so when I speak tonight; when I vote tonight I am representing the people. willing to speak on behalf of the people in regards to increasing our water rates; theyre more than willing to speak on behalf of the people in regard to raising our taxes, which is fine and good thats why we voted for them. But on this issue Ratigan said it was as if the prevailing majority was shopping for excuses not to act on what appears to be the will of a majority of town citizens. Jerry Scholder reflected that belief when he told council, Its too bad some of your minds are made up you can see it in the smirks. You know who you are so I wont name, names but you know what this issue is about. In a last ditch bid to sway at least one vote toward November from the trio of council opponents, Parker pointed out that if they voted for the change by ordinance and decided it didnt work, council could simply vote to change back. However, if the change is made by citizen referendum that change is binding on council. Short memories? However it appeared to at least one observer that those councilmen voting to maintain May elections are banking on two things: 1/ a citizen petition of the courts and subsequent referendum will not occur in time to impact the 01 town election; and / should a citizen referendum affect the change to November, by the 014 town election when that change is likely to be implemented everyone will have forgotten what they were mad at them for in the first place. Long-term consequences? At least one observer with not too distant experience in the towns political trenches wondered if Darr wasnt risking his political future by appearing to abandon the same citizen activists who had first propelled him into town office. Former Mayor Eugene Tewalt expressed disappointment at the majority vote. Im very surprised that the result wasnt of a more positive nature this evening, Tewalt said. I think the people spoke by the surveys they sent back in to the town showing a positive result for the change to November. I think the town and the council have made a bad decision and I think the result will be seen in the future at the towns next election. Tewalt declined to speculate on whether he might rejoin the political fray in the 01 town election and perhaps challenge Darr, who defeated him in an 18-percent voter turnout in 010. Another former town official, former EDA board member Steve Sill was also critical of the vote. Im a little disappointed. I listened to his arguments, Sill said of the mayors decisive reasoning. I think he made some reasonable points but I really think the idea of increasing turnout is important thats the biggest [issue] And they talk about partisanship its not so much partisan as it is just a little group of people who say Okay, this guys going to be in; this guys going to be in; that guys not going to be in. But I think the opportunity for the citizens to move forward and ask for a referendum is a reasonable next step. Another citizen questioned the majority rationale Why change now? Weve always done it this way.

It seems Im quite the popular guy. Ive been getting lots of free stuff lately One restaurant gave me 15 bucks off my next meal. Another gave me a free pizza. And my favorite dining establishment, the Dairy Queen, wants me to have a free Blizzard, although theyd like me to buy one first. I can do that. Why all the free stuff? Its my birthday. Most folks dont like birthdays, especially once they hit 30. Not me. At our house, we celebrate the whole month. Well, I do anyway. Ive also been getting a lot of extra attention recently. My orthopedic surgeons office sent me a birthday greeting. How nice. You know what would be even nicer? How about ten percent off a future surgical procedure? Like in a few years when I need a joint replacement. New hips and shoulders arent cheap. My alma mater wished me a day of good cheer. That was thoughtful, but I was hoping for more, considering all the money we paid in tuition. How about basketball season tickets next year? I got a splashy email from Coca Cola. Thats thoughtful, but Id prefer some free stuff instead. To paraphrase Tom Cruise in the movie Jerry Maguire, Show me the free stuff! I was grocery shopping a few days before THE day. The thought had already crossed my mind. When I got to the bakery, I decided to do it. Since it was just for my wife and me, I picked out the small-
est cake I could find. Would you like something written on it? the cake decorator asked me. Yes I would, I told her. Happy Birthday to me! She laughed. How pathetic, is what she was probably thinking. This loser has to buy his own cake and celebrate with himself. That was only partially true. Since my wife was going out of town the day after THE day, I would have to celebrate a few days by myself. A few minutes later, the woman scanning my purchases read the cake and snickered. She probably thought I was pathetic as well. Wouldnt your wife buy you a cake? she asked. Probably, but I didnt want to take a chance. Ok, maybe I am pathetic. Now I was curious. Were you going to get me one? I asked her the other night. I was thinking about it. Works for me. After all, the month aint up yet. If youd like to wish the author a happy birthday, or send him an expensive gift, please do. Hes napping right now. Too pooped from all the celebrating. That, and old age.

Linda Allen, have pointed to May municipal elections across Virginia as part of a legacy of past racism and exclusion of working class voters championed by a political machine attempting to consolidate its stranglehold on politics across the commonwealth in the 1930s. While acknowledging that the original impetus making it more difficult for both black and white farm-working poor to get to the polls during spring planting season is no longer valid, those citizen activists say the end result of more limited voter participation still holds true in May elections. Questioned later, Darr reiterated his comments the evening of the public hearing. As stated that night there was no real research done to determine if it was in the best interest of the town from a council/business standpoint. I do feel personally that the voter turnout may be larger but once again there was a lack of documented or proof presented prior to the vote to make the determination for a change. I do feel that the decision is where it needs to be which is in the hands of the voting citizens, the mayor concluded. The future is later But supporters of November town elections have asked why council shouldnt facilitate what appears to be a popular change among citizens

But on June 13th a Front Royal Town Council contingent buoyed by the mayors tiebreaking vote decided the towns electoral future is not now, but later. The unanswered question now may be have their votes to delay citizen-driven political change guaranteed that their own political futures, like Byrd Machine politics, are also things of the past? rogerb@warrencountyreport.com

er production component to the towns electric utility. Robinetts inquiry to the Richmond law firm of Troutman-Sanders was the result of questions brought to him by Councilmen Chris Holloway and Carson Lauder on March 30, 010, the day after a closed session discussion of the solar proposal. Despite over eight months of public work session discussion of various financial incentives, potential job creation and other educational proffers, both Holloway and Lauder expressed surprise at Grahams March 9, 010 closed session references to financial incentives on the table, then identified as $1. million by Graham, if the solar proposal was rejected or radically pared back as council work session discussion that day indicated it would be. In subsequent explanations of his inquiry to Troutman-Sanders attorney Carter Glass IV, Robinett also expressed surprise at Grahams closed session references to financial benefit to the community discussed during the March 9, 010 work session. The controversy over the supposed solar bribes erupted in the lead up to the May 010 town election, driven by a week of top of front page headline stories in the Northern Virginia Daily, to which Robinetts confidential memo was leaked. That papers reporter Ben Orcutt has repeatedly identified the source of the leak upon which his

stories were based as a then sitting councilman. Sayre, Lauder, Holloway, Parker, Conkey and Hrbek were then on council all have denied being the source of the leak. At the time Robinett was criticized by then Mayor Eugene Tewalt, Vice-Mayor Bret Hrbek and Councilmen Parker and Conkey for failing to receive permission or even inform the mayor and full council of his planned legal inquiry based on the questions of two councilmen citizen activist Tina Hobson later noted appeared to be suffering from selective memory loss. Perhaps coincidentally, two of Grahams biggest council supporters, Tewalt and Hrbek, were defeated in the May 010 election. Three months after taking office Hrbeks replacement on council, Hollis Tharpe, joined Holloway and Lauder forming a 3- majority with Sayre absent to fire Graham. While a $30-million defamation and interference in a business contract lawsuit against the town and three of its councilmen Holloway, Lauder and Tom Sayre surrounding the solar bribe publicity has been dismissed, attorney David Silek has indicated the plaintiffs, local businessmen Greg Horton and Donnie Poe, plan on re-filing the lawsuit against that council trio as individuals. Silek has also hinted that other John Doe defendants could eventually be named in the lawsuit.

Once a month we select an organization for our Star Treatment community fundraising program and we sponsor charities or nonprofit groups if they qualify. During the month of May, Kiwanis took both, Jenna Busch said. This is a great organization, theyre looking to give back to the community. This was a fundraiser that had little manpower needed and no money out of pocket, Lisa Parker said. Members took the certificates and either gave them as gifts to friends or sold them to friends and coworkers. It was sheer profit as none went back to HealthSource. The club members were provided with 30 minute massage coupons to sell for $10 in HealthSources Star Treatment fundraiser. In December, the couple will have been in business here for three years. Before their move to Front Royal, they lived in southwest Virginia. Jenna Busch is originally from Flint, Michigan, but Dr. Busch is a Virginian, with family in Richmond. He described their practice as a combination between sports and physical therapy, massage therapy and a chiropractic physician. He added that their hybrid approach to medicine has been welcomed by both the public and local physicians. This season hes also taken on the responsibility to be the team physician for the Front Royal Cardinals. Jenna Busch was quick to detail some of her husbands specialties. His full title is Dr. Jeremy D. Busch, D.C., C.C.S.P., C.S.C.S., C.Ht. and he is certified in biomedical dry needling, acupuncture and decompression. Spinal decompression is a term that describes the relief of pressure on one or many pinched nerves-or neural impingement of the spinal column. He has a love for learning and is up in all the research. Hes scientific-driven, all about the research, she said. He is a certified hypnotherapist and conducts sessions to help with losing weight, smoking, and anxiety. Added to all that, he has co-authored a book published last year titled, Freedom From Fat. Were doing well here, and we love the town, she added. Busch went on to say that they also have a big desire to reach out to the community and many future fundraisers are already on their schedule for this year. Theyll be a sponsor for Relay For Life on June

11 and will donate to the House of Hope, the 4-hour facility that serves the needs of homeless men in Front Royal and Warren County. Dr. Busch is planning to run in the 36th Marine Corps Marathon October 30 in Arlington to raise money for the Burn Foundation of the International Association of Fire Fighters. This money is used for both prior victims and to help fund new research. He has set a goal to raise $1,000 for him to run. In the HealthSource office patients can donate to this effort and will get their name on the donation wall. Also, they will host a Got Pain month and all proceeds will be contributed to IAFF. A card, called Got Pain, allows a person to come into the office for an exam and any necessary xrays with a $10 donation to IAFF. Jenna Busch went on to explain how their Star Treatment services work as a fundraiser. An organization should call her to set it up for a specific month, She will arrange it so that the organization gets the $10 coupons with their name printed on them that people can bring to their office for the massages and optional free exams. Again, 100 percent of the profit goes back to the organization, she said. Their friendly office staff includes Fairen Clatterbuck, Medical Receptionist and Amy Amberson, Massage Therapist. By Malcolm Barr Sr. Warren County Report Some of you may remember Hamlet. Perhaps because of his Shakespearean name, he became a media ham! In 006, he made national and local headlines as the poster boy for all rescue dogs of his breed. Grudgingly, he was briefly eclipsed by, Fred, our goldfish, who died around that time aged 17 and turned out to be a few decimal points short of the worlds largest in captivity (the biggest was--and probably is, still--in the Netherlands). Now Hamlet, our Japanese chin, has died. He crossed the rainbow bridge at Dr. Dianna Sullivans clinic following a long battle with heart disease on June 1. Hamlet (formerly called a Japanese spaniel)

Of 95 chins that passed through my hands, he was the only rescue we adopted, and, as in many cases of abused and neglected animals, fate took a hand. The home we found for him following his delivery to us in Alexandria by the Hagerstown, MD SPCA, did not pan out, and with my wife Carols encouragement, we gave him our home. Essentially, we kept this playful little black-and-white dog to provide new and meaningful life to an aging female chin, Aini, about 16 and entering her dotage. Kurt Busch led the Cup point standings through the first four races of the season. After a short slump, hes climbed back into sixth place. (John Clark/ NASCAR This Week photo) Now, once again, Kurt Busch is a picture of contentment, with results to back it up. Edwards ran into engine trouble at Michigan, almost erasing what had been a comfortable edge in points. Buschs runner-up finish at Pocono Raceway was one ahead of younger brother Kyle. When the point leader has problems, everybodys just chomping at the bit, licking their lips, going, Wow, look at this, Im right back in this. When youre having good runs like we are, my little brother and me, just plugging away, that helps you feel more solid when you get to the month of August, after you get through the Brickyard, making that summer run to the Chase, said Kurt. Given recent performances, that summer run to the Chase seems promising for both Busch brothers. Kurt Busch won the Cup championship in 2004, the first year the Chase format was implemented. At the time, he drove a Ford for Jack Roush. Now he drives one of two Dodges fielded by Roger Penske. Right now its all about consistency, said Kurt. Id like to break through and get a win just to help us feel more confident in our Chase position. When the point leader has trouble, everybody benefits from that. *** Monte Dutton covers motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. Email Monte at nascarthisweek@ yahoo.com.

Front Royal resident Janice Miller describes her Royal Reiki session: I entered a room where the lights were dimmed and meditative music surrounded me. I was asked in a very soft voice by one of the practitioners to remove only my shoes and to lie
By Leslie Fiddler Warren County Report (Writers disclosure: I recently received reiki from Royal Reiki members Luann Jacobs, Eka Kapiotis and George Ronet. Now I want to share information about the local reiki scene with you, dear reader.) What is reiki? The National Center for Complementary Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, defines reiki as a healing practice that originated in Japan. Reiki practitioners place their hands lightly on or just above the person receiving treat-
ment, with the goal of facilitating the persons own healing response ... Reiki is based on the idea that there is a universal (or source) energy that supports the bodys innate healing abilities. Practitioners seek to access this energy, allowing it to flow to the body and facilitate healing. Reiki has a lively local presence. Warren Countys Royal Reiki group was founded in January 006 by reiki masters Linda Allen, Karen Hade, Eka Kapiotis, Deborah Matchett and Pat Millar to inspire wholeness by sharing reiki. Group membership has grown to over 5 people, several of whom give free monthly reiki sessions in town. Kapiotis has also

down fully clothed on a padded table and to completely relax. My feet and legs were gently covered with a sheet blanket and a pillow was placed under my head. At ease, I immediately closed my eyes in meditation. I wanted no distractions, but wanted to completely experience their healing energy. Specific areas of my body needed a healing touch. The Reiki practitioners hands served as the healing force that I needed. I think the practitioners must somehow have sensed where my body needed their healing energy because invariably they touched or hovered over the areas that truly needed their special healing touch! Miller concludes It was awesome! Says Royal Reiki member Karen Hade energy has an intelligence. It goes where it needs to go. Hades observation is confirmed by Pamela Miles in Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide. Miles writes, Reiki flows as water seeks its own level, gently encouraging the biofield toward balance. Warren County resident Debbie Llewellyn has been receiving reiki from family friend Debbie Hite. Llewellyn says that Reiki has helped so much spiritually and through times of hardship. Debbie leaves me feeling peaceful and I feel that I just cant wait to see her again. Hite has studied reiki with Eka Kapiotis and local practitioner Deyann Davis and continues to learn and evolve her intuitive energy work. We all branch into our own form she says. Healing Happens The night I received reiki the love in the room was palpable. I think that reiki is a touch-centered method of sharing the love that underlies all true religions, and that it is accessible to all seekers. By Ariana Shirzadi Special to The Warren County Report Turn on the radio and what do you hear? It all depends on what station you listen to and where you are. Its hard to stay up to date with current music. Theres everything from the ever so current American Idol and Glee, to the underground indie music of the college crowds. But then there are some who dont
turn to the radio or the hottest music TV shows. There are some who turn to their archive and pick from music history for all of their listening needs. Some music is timeless and there are those who will pick the classics again and again no matter what. One band The Fabulous Hubcaps is doing its part to keep the classics alive by bringing their live show of favorites from the 50s, 60s and 70s to the Shenandoah Valley Music

in other capacities prior to joining. They needed a sax player and someone who could play a couple of instruments and I was referred to the manager. Barry Holober on the other hand never considered an alternative to playing in bands. Ive been playing drums since I was a little boy, performing in a myriad of bands including popular DC band Cherry Smash in the 70s. He took some time off from music to do other things but never really parted ways with it. During that hiatus, he got a call from Coe Anderson, the musical arranger and leader of the Hubcaps. They had met in the 70s when they were in the band Critical Point together. He was first called by Anderson for a temporary gig to fill in for their sick drummer, and when that drummer left the next year, he became a full time member. This is his 9th year with the Hubcaps. Roxy cites strong female musicians as her influences. I like Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney and Diana Krall. More Diana Krall because she plays piano and sings, which is what her musical start consisted of. But not really Madonna, people who have been around for a while. As for Holober he notes just a broad range for his influences. I grew up in the late 50s, 60s and 70s, I like progressive rock and jazz. I let the different musical influences that I do like help with drumming because even though we do oldies and classic rock there are several types of songs; Frank Sinatra, Little Richard, country, all of my influences have helped with my drumming. Like Holober said, the Hubcaps arent like a typical band. They cover a range of decades and a variety of genres. Watching the Hubcaps is like watching a show. They go through costume changes with the decades and many switch between instruments and singing. I like being in a show band better than a regular band. Its harder, we only have three minutes to change costumes and wigs between songs, but its more satisfying, Roxy said. Holober enjoys the show band too but from a drummer perspective. I do some costume changes, but keeping time and playing solid drums are the same for any type of band youre in, said Holober. A band that has been around as long as the Hubcaps has a good idea of what the audience wants. Both Roxy and Holober give the same account for the bands success. We have authentic sounding music, people appreciate that we take so much time to play the songs as they were played when they came out, Holober said. Roxy adds that people like that its a show, something to look at.
Entertainment
Unsurprisingly, their following is still strong. There are still a lot of people that like those years. We might have to add different styles in the future but for now we have a great following, Roxy said. Holober agrees. Our following are people who have enjoyed this kind of music for years and years, even young people appreciate what we do. It goes out to all different people; we encompass the late 50s to early 70s and a little early 80s, Holober said. People who grew up with this music appreciate it, those who remember what it was like; we give people a really good show. Roxy adds that their reputation also has something to do with it. People love the classics but the name draws people, people know they are going to get a good show because we have a good reputation, said Roxy. So what keeps them going? The music. Ive got to admit its like a drug, in a good way. I dont do drugs and never have, but its in my blood, Roxy said. I get to play music for a living and most of the people in the band are my good friends. Music is what keeps me going, Im going to play until Im 70 years old and cant lift my hands anymore, Holober said. The Fabulous Hubcaps will be performing in Orkney Springs, VA on July 9 at 8 p.m. for the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival. Tickets are all general admission for $5. Dear Stewart: Is ivy growing up a tree really going to kill it? If so, how can I safely remove the ivy and prevent it from growing again? Would weed killer hurt the tree? Lady in Browntown Dear Lady

very bad thing. But it also provides a place for nasty things like snakes and hawks to hide while watching for a squirrel dinner to run by. And its really bad for the tree. The rootlets of the ivy worm their way deep into the bark, opening up areas for disease and insects to enter the tree. Debris builds up in the vines and holds moisture next to the bark. This can cause rot and fungal growth that further weakens the tree. The weight of the ivy as it grows can even pull the bark right off the tree causing large wounds. If the vines are just starting to grow up the tree, they can be gently pulled off by hand. If they are already grown, they are too deeply embedded to pull them free. Instead cut the vines at the base, taking care not to hurt the tree bark in the process, and allow them to die on their own. The leaves will fall within a month or two. But Im afraid you will be left with the vine network for several years before they begin to break loose from the bark. Some weed killers are ok to use as long as they dont get on the foliage of the tree. But for a large, fully covered tree, you cant spray enough of the ivy to kill it without damaging the other. And other herbicides cant be used as they could enter the tree through the bark and kill it. So, chemical controls arent really the best method of dealing with these vines. Instead use them on the ground to keep the ivy well back from the tree in the first place. And thanks in advance for saving us squirrels from a nasty fall. Stewart
Ask Stewart
English Ivy is one of those plants that are oh, so pretty and romantic, draping from the trees and their branches. Or maybe it is mysterious; I dont know why humans seem to really like it on their trees. But we squirrels are not so fond of it. Not only does it cause a trip hazard for us, and let me tell you tripping on a branch forty feet up can be a very,
The Front Royal/Warren County Tree Steward program began in 1997 with volunteers dedicated to improving the health of trees by providing educational programs, tree planting and care demonstrations, and tree maintenance throughout the community. The group now consists of over 30 active members with several interns working toward becoming certified tree stewards from our annual All About Trees Class. Each month Stewart will answer a question from our readers. Please forward it to Stewart in care of frwctreestewards@comcast.net and we may publish it in a future issue.
