STAR-CD V4: From Fluid Dynamics to Continuum Mechanics

With a 20-year heritage of providing solutions to the most complex problems that fluid mechanics has to offer, STAR-CD has a long established a reputation for being the most versatile platform for industrial CFD simulation.
But STAR-CD is more than just a CFD code. The latest release, STAR-CD V4, introduces the capability to perform structural analysis calculations using a methodology based upon its industry-leading CFD solver technology, the first time that a comprehensive solution for flow, thermal and stress simulation has been available in a single generalpurpose commercial finite-volume code. In bridging the gap between fluid dynamics and structural-mechanics, STAR-CD V4 brings the routine solution of a whole new class of engineering problems within the reach of regular industrial users. STAR-CD V4 is now fully polyhedra enabled; bringing state-of-the-art solver technology to STAR-CD users, without compromising the advanced modeling and complex physics capabilities for which STAR-CD is the undisputed market leader. By using the latest polyhedra-solver technology, STAR-CD V4 delivers significant benefits in speed, robustness and usability.

Versatility and control

Based on advanced solver technology, with a comprehensive range of physics models and the ability to automatically create high quality computational meshes, STAR-CD V4 can be used straight-out-of-thebox to tackle a wide range of engineering problems. However, if the complexity of the problem demands, STAR-CD V4 is uniquely versatile, allows users to customize and control every aspect of the simulation process. If you need to move your mesh on a nodeby-node basis in response to your solution, STAR-CD V4 will help you do it. If you need to use a physics model that is specific to your problem, STAR-CD V4 will let you add one. STAR-CD constantly pushes back the boundaries of simulation. If an engineering problem can be solved using CFD, STAR-CD can help you to solve it.

Flow, Thermal, Stress

STAR-CD V4 is the first general-purpose commercial finite-volume code that is routinely able to perform Computational Continuum Mechanics simulations. Both fluid and solid calculations are performed simultaneously on a single computational mesh, created automatically with CD-adapcos advanced automatic meshing technology. The mesh (which can be constructed from hexahedra, tetrahedra or arbitrary

polyhedra) automatically represents the interface between different material regions (whether fluid-solid or solid-solid) using a conformal interface, which means that solution domains are coupled implicitly without mapping or interpolation. The coupling is performed in the memory of the computer, and not using files passed via the hard-drive, so that the degree of interaction is much higher than through external coupling; information is interchanged at an inner iteration level, rather than at each external iteration (which typically takes place once per time step), resulting in increased efficiency and robustness. This methodology is very attractive for applications that require: conjugate heat-transfer and stress analysis; fluid structure interaction; and melting and solidification (where the continuum changes state from solid to liquid or vice versa).

The surface wrapper works by shrink-wrapping a high quality triangulated surface mesh onto any geometrical model, closing holes in the geometry and joining disconnected and overlapping surfaces, providing manifold surfaces that can be used to automatically generate a computational mesh without user intervention Of all the CFD technology we tried, only CD-adapcos combination of CAD-embedding and surface wrapping provided a robust and efficient process by which we could optimize our designs without delay to our demanding production schedule.

Advanced automatic meshing

Advanced automatic meshing technology generates either polyhedral or predominantly hexahedral control volumes at the touch of a button, offering the ultimate combination of speed, control and accuracy. An important part of mesh generation for accurate CFD simulation, is the near-wall region, or extrusion-layer mesh. STAR-CD V4 automatically produces a high-quality extrusion layer mesh on all walls in the domain. In addition, you have the option to control the position, size, growth-rate and number of cell layers in the extrusion-layer mesh. This combination of high quality automatic polyhedral mesh generation and efficient solver technology should provide you with ease-of-use, faster turnaround times and increased solution accuracy, for all classes of flow, in all application areas. "Because STAR-CD's automatic meshing technology can automatically create meshes with a core-hexahedral structure, blocks containing entire components can simply be "lifted out" of the mesh and replaced with revised meshes of just that section. This dramatically reduces run-times and ultimately makes CFD the only viable tool for brake cooling analysis."
Jarrod Murphy, ING Renault F1 Team

Multiphase and Multiphysics

STAR-CD has always provided a comprehensive range of physics modeling, capable of simulating engineering problems that involve turbulence, combustion, heat transfer (including radiation heat transfer), reacting flows and multiphase physics. STAR-CD V4 introduces state-of-the-art free surface modeling, an improvement on the technology previously used extensively throughout the marine industry in COMET, and the ability to model phase change through cavitation, boiling or condensation.

From CAD to CFD solution

Using either the STAR-CAD Series or a dedicated geometry import facility, STAR-CD can import geometries and models from almost any CAE tool, and automatically generate a computational mesh at the click of a button. For problems that involve large assemblies of complex geometry parts, CD-adapcos unique surface-wrapping tool significantly reduces the number of man-hours spent on surface cleanup, often reducing the entire meshing process to hours instead of days.
