Apple Unit- September 2009

* The apple unit was designed as an inquiry based unit. It incorporates all areas of the curriculum, with a focus on science. The unit is 9 days long and includes one culminating activity, a field trip to the Apple Orchard. Many of the worksheets have been created specifically for the curriculum at Willow School and are differentiated to help all students experience success.

Johnny Appleseed (An extension lesson for gifted and talented students) Reading IL State Goal 5A (Locate, organize and use information from various sources to answer questions, solve problems, and communicate ideas..) IL State Goal 5C (Apply acquired information concepts and ideas to communicate in a variety of formats..) Comprehension and Research Students will read The Johnny Appleseed book. Students will create slides in KidPix to make into a book to share with the class. Pre- Running Record to determine the students that are at the books reading level. Post- KidPix Book Creation Johnny Appleseed book, a computer, a printer, paper, KidPix, a binding machine, and binding combs Eligible students will read the Johnny Appleseed book during regular reading instruction time. Students will work on creating slides in KidPix that retell the story including main ideas to share with the class. Students will print their book and assemble it (with help for binding). Student will read their book aloud to the class. Student will answer any questions the class has.

Apple Adjectives (An extension lesson for gifted and talented students) Reading IL State Goal 5C (Apply acquired information concepts and ideas to communicate in a variety of formats..) Research and Production Students will create a poster of Apple Adjectives to present and display within the classroom. Pre- Observations during apple whole group apple tasting and graphing activity to determine which students can participate and students that have been observed or leveled (running record) with a high ability to read and write. Post- Apple Adjectives poster Construction paper apple, all items from the Apple Graphing Activity, and markers Upon completing the Apple Graph Teacher Survey, students will create a poster in the shape of an apple. Students will review words that the teachers used to describe the apple and write them on their shape. Students will present and display their Apple Adjective Poster to the class.
