How to Communicate with a Non Native English Speaker

Not all non-native speakers have trouble communicating in English. Many speak at a native level, but many do not. The ability to communicate with people who speak a limited amount of English is actually a skill that can be developed over time with practice. Whether you deal with non-native English speakers often or rarely, this advice will help you to communicate more effectively and smoothly.

Steps

1. Speak clearly and pronounce your words correctly. Exaggerated pronunciations will not help your listener and may cause more confusion. However, you may find that it helps to pronounce some words as the non-native speaker does. This will be especially true if the proper pronunciation is very different from the non-native pronunciation. 2. Recognize that people wrongly think that turning up the volume somehow creates instant understanding. Avoid this common mistake (however, do not speak too quietly). 3. Do not cover or hide your mouth because listeners will want to watch you as you pronounce your words. This helps them figure out what you are saying in many cases. 4. Do not use baby talk or incorrect English. This does not make you easier to understand. It will confuse your listener and may give the wrong impression about your own level of competence. 5. Avoid running words together ( Do-ya wanna eat-a-pizza?). One of the biggest challenges for listeners is knowing where one word ends and the next one begins. Give them a small pause between words if they seem to be struggling. 6. When possible, opt for simple words instead of ones that are complex. The more basic a word is, the better the chance is that it will be understood. ("Big" is a better choice than "enormous" for example. "Make" is a better choice than "manufacture.") However, with a Romance language speaker (i.e. Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian), these 'complex' words can be useful as they are rooted in Latin.

7. Avoid verb phrases that sound very similar to non-native English speaker. "Look out" sounds very close to "look for." Both are similar to "look out for." Many times you can use another word in these cases. (Example: look out = be careful, look for = search for, look out for = watch for). 8. As much as possible, avoid using filler and colloquialisms ('um...', 'like...','Yeah, totally.') as non-native speakers, especially ones of lower proficiency levels, may get hung up on these thinking the filler language is vocabulary that they don't possess. Colloquialisms are likely to be unknown as well, especially if they are not easy to find in the dictionary. 9. If asked to repeat something, first repeat it as you said it the first time. Then again. It could be that they simply didn't hear you. If your listener still doesn't understand, however, change a few key words in the sentence. It may be that they couldn't understand one or two of the words. Also repeat the whole sentence and not just the last couple of words. It's time consuming, but it helps prevent confusion. 10. Consider the fact that your dialect may not be what the other person has learned in school. For example, most non-Americans expect the second t in the word "twenty" to be pronounced.

11. Paraphrase. if you happen to know a similar word to the word you are searching for then
use it. As your knowledge of the foreign language builds this becomes even easier. 12. Avoid using contractions or short forms. Use long forms. Cant is one word you must use the long form with. It is difficult for a non-native speaker to understand the difference between can and cant in a sentence. For example, I cant take you on Friday and I can take you on Friday. Use the long form, cannot. I cannot take you on Friday. 13. Decrease the use of words that fill your sentences. The idea is to remove the noise from your speech. Imagine trying to listen to the radio with two young children in the same room. They are playing and screaming. What is the result? "Family of...car...on vacation...in Arizona." If your oral communication is filled with "um", "like", "you know", or other fillers, comprehension is more difficult. Right is a word that commonly fills conversations. I prefer to use Yes, that is correct. A non-native speaker may not understand right and confuse it with its opposite, left. 14. Be explicit: Say Yes or No. Do not say: Uh-huh or Uh-uh. Those words are not in grammar books! 15. Be patient and smile. The more relaxed you are, the more you are in control of your communication. Do not give a busy lifestyle or a meeting agenda permission to control your speech. Think as you speak and do not speak as you think.

[edit]

Tips

If you are having problems with verbal communication, try drawing an object on paper. If the other person did not understand what you said repeat it as you said it the first time

If you have failed with a sentence, reflect on that sentence (did you unconsciously use a distracting metaphor, a colloquialism, conjunctions?). Try again with a new, simpler sentence free of complex language. Keep a good attitude and be friendly. Impatience will inhibit your ability to communicate and can alienate your listener. Making Requests: Even though you might be tempted to speak politely with indirect questions (ie. Would it be possible to..? I was wondering if you could..? If you wouldn't mind terribly to..? etc.), it is best to avoid as many unnecessary collocations as possible. A simple "can you X or Is it Y - followed with a universal "please" and "thank you" should do the trick. There is a nuance to not using big words: when speaking to a person who speaks a Western European language, the big words in English are more likely to be words that already exist in that person's language, so sometimes you might have more luck with the big words than the small ones. Speak a little slower than normal. It takes more time to parse a foreign language; give your listener that time. This goes along with being patient and articulating clearly. Make many more gestures than normal when speaking. Often it's possible to understand just by catching a couple of words and seeing the gestures. Write things down. It's sometimes easier to understand written language than spoken language. Get used to not understanding everything. Take guesses at what someone said in another language, unless it's important that you understand the details, e.g. buying a train ticket, doctors office, etc. For most daily situations, you can just guess, and the situation will work out. Of course some misunderstandings will result, but accept it and move on. If the person is new to English, keep in mind that on a certain level he will be "translating" his language to yours. His English words and expressions are influenced by his mother tongue, so things that might sound impolite to you are not always meant in that way. For example, a plain "No" might seem too blunt, whereas "I don't agree," if said politely, keeps open the door of communication. Try to listen "between the lines" before judging the other speaker's attitude. If you are still unable to communicate by any other means, try speaking even - more slowly and even more distinctly to your listener (especially if you know you tend to mumble).

Pocket electronic translators are the size of a calculator, can cost under $20 (check [1] and Sort low to high price), and translate common words and phrases. You can type in English, they can type in their language (with some challenge, since it's an English keyboard). Printed pocket sized two-language dictionaries are inexpensive. If all else fails, try finding another language that you are both comfortable with. For example, if the person you are speaking to is German, but is more fluent in French than in English (and your French is better than your German), you might have more success.

[edit]

Warnings

Don't agree to anything unless you are certain that you have communicated effectively. This could potentially be a serious issue. For example, if someone is asking which way to the hospital, you don't want to give them the wrong information. Sometimes good communication means knowing when your skills are inadequate for a situation that demands precise communication. In these cases you will want a translator. For example, you wouldn't want to inadvertantly send someone to wait in the wrong 3-hour line in a government office. Avoid touching listeners from some cultures. Even if you want to nudge them in the right direction or encourage them with a friendly pat on the back, your gesture may be misinterpreted. Many cultures view personal contact very differently and your friendly touch could be seen as aggressive or overly familiar. Unless you have been asked otherwise, avoid the temptation to correct your listener. Taking time to make corrections is useful if they have come to you asking for your help with their language skills, but otherwise it will slow down your communication and may cause your listener to feel self-conscious. Correction may also create a "teacher-student" relationship between you and the non-native speaker. If you have a very heavy accent yourself (or one they are unfamiliar with) write the word down. Many non-English speakers actually have very good vocabulary and grammar basics, but the different accent can make things harder to understand. When there are words that sound the same but are spelled differently, write the word down to avoid confusion: 'bear' and 'bare' for example. If those two words are pronounced slightly differently in your accent, mention this. When it comes to words that mean different things across different contexts, use a different word. Use 'final' and 'previous' instead of 'last', which can mean both. And explain the context of other people's usage of 'last' only when he/she can't work it out.

Steps

1. Read English constantly, whether it is books like Harry Potter or non-fiction, scholarly works. 2. Watch English television, such as news programmes (e.g. BBC Worlds can be viewed in many parts of the worlds). While watching shows with words that you may not understand, while using a notebook and pen, write the word down (how you think it is spelt) and then find its correct spelling and find out what the word means. 3. Do not have subtitles when watching tv series or movies. 4. Read aloud in order to build both your written and spoken vocabulary. 5. Practice writing a lot. Essays, article contributions, blogging, etc. 6. Communicate as much as possible in English. 7. Make use of the dictionary or thesaurus.

8. Be relaxed and confident when speaking English. 9. Build English vocabulary at the appropriate level; otherwise you will remain an average English speaker.

[edit]

Tips

Grammar is very important. Lay yourself a good grammar foundation and your English will improve exponentially. Nevertheless, don't get bogged down and held back by grammar rules. You want to speak the language, not learn how it's spoken. Grammar is not only about sentence/verb formations. You should understand the implied meaning associated with the grammar used. Try to think in English instead of your mother tongue/the language you are familiar with. Use an English dictionary instead of a bilingual dictionary (as you progress).

Practice using natural English instead of finding the English equivalents from your mother tongue. Watch movies in English without subtitles or English language satellite channels like BBC or CNN and try to understand it. Find a friend with whom you can practice English.

Be careful of a dictionary's definition of synonyms. There are no two completely synonymous words in English. Car and automobile are said to be synonymous, but telling your English friend that you have an automobile instead of a car is unusual. If you learn English at school, then be as engaged as you can in those lessons, and always only speak English (if you can) there.

Steps

1. End your sentences with a period (full stop), question mark, or exclamation point
(exclamation mark or shout mark). o Use the period (full stop) to denote a full stop at the end of a statement. The period ( . ) is one of the most commonly used punctuation marks. The accessibility of the computer has increased tremendously over the past several years. o The question mark ( ? ), used at the end of a sentence, suggests an interrogatory remark or inquiry. What has humanity done about the growing concern of global warming?

o The exclamation point (exclamation mark, shout mark)( ! ) suggests excitement or emphasis in a sentence. I can't believe how difficult the exam was!

2. Use the semicolon and colon properly. o The semicolon ( ; ) has a few uses. Use a semicolon to separate two related but independent clauses. Note that, if the two clauses are very wordy or complex, it is better to use a period instead. People continue to worry about the future; our failure to conserve resources has put the world at risk. Use a semicolon to separate a complex series of items, especially those that contain commas. I went to the show with Jake, my close friend; his friend, Jane; and her best friend, Jenna. o The colon ( : ) has multiple uses. Use the colon to introduce a list. Be careful not to use a colon when denoting a regular series. Usually, the word following suggests the use of a colon. Use only after a full sentence which ends in a noun.

The professor has given me three options: to retake the exam, to accept the extra credit assignment, or to fail the class. INCORRECT - The Easter basket contained: Easter eggs, chocolate rabbits, and other candy. 3. Understand the differences between a hyphen and a dash. o The hyphen ( - ) was once a common punctuation mark on typewriters, when a long word might have been split between two lines. The hyphen is still used in a number of other areas: Use a hyphen when adding a prefix to some words. The purpose of this hyphen is to make the word easier to read. If you were to leave the hyphen out of a word like re-examine, it would be reexamine, which would be harder to read. Understand that some words do not require a hyphen to separate the prefix from the word, such as restate, pretest, and undo. Let a dictionary be your guide for when to use the hyphen after a prefix. When you use a hyphen, the two words have to rely on each other. Example: rearrange. Cara is his ex-girlfriend. Use hyphens when creating compound words from separate words. The up-to-date newspaper reporters were quick to jump on the latest scandal. Use a hyphen when writing numbers out as words. Separate the two words of any number under one hundred with a hyphen. There are fifty-two playing cards in a deck. ("The amount is one hundred and eighty" is a common error in US English, where the "and" is usually omitted. Elsewhere in the English-speaking world, however, the "and" is usually included.) Be careful with spelling out numbers above one hundred if the number is used as an adjective, it is completely hyphenated, since all compound adjectives are hyphenated (I have one-hundred tapes). Otherwise, a hyphen should only occur if a number greater than 100 occurs within the larger number, e.g., He lived to be one hundred twentyone. o The dash ( -- or ) should be used when making a brief interruption within a statement, a sudden change of thought, an additional comment, or a dramatic qualification. It can also be used to add a parenthetical statement, such as for further

clarification, but should still be relevant to the sentence. Otherwise, use parentheses. Keep in mind that the rest of the sentence should still flow naturally. Try to remove the statement within the dash from the sentence; if the sentence appears disjointed or does not make sense, then you may need to revise. There should be spaces before and after the dash in British English. An introductory clause is a brief phrase that comesyes, you guessed it at the beginning of a sentence. This is the end of our sentenceor so we thought.

4. Use the double quotation mark and single quotation mark/apostrophe for different purposes. o The double quotation ( " ) encloses a direct quotation, whether made by a person or taken from a piece of literature. "I can't wait to see him perform!" John exclaimed.

According to the article, the value of the dollar in developing nations is "strongly influenced by its aesthetic value, rather than its face value." o The single quotation mark or apostrophe ( ' ) has a variety of uses. Use the apostrophe together with the letter s to indicate possession. Be aware of the difference in using an apostrophe with singular or plural nouns. A singular noun will use 's, whereas the plural version of that singular noun will use s'. Also, be mindful of nouns that are always considered to be plural, such as children and people here, you should use 's. Be aware of pronouns that are already possessive and do not require apostrophes, such as hers and its (it's is used only for the contractions of it is and it has). Their is possessive without apostrophe or s, except as a predicate adjective, where it becomes theirs. The hamster's water tube needs to be refilled. A singular noun with possession. In the pet store, the hamsters' bedding needed to be changed. A pluralized singular noun with possession. These children's test scores are the highest in the nation. A plural noun with possession.

Use the apostrophe to combine two words to make a contraction. For example, cannot becomes can't, you are becomes you're, and they have becomes they've. Use the single quotation mark within a regular quotation to indicate a quotation within a quotation. Ali said, "Anna told me, 'I wasn't sure if you wanted to come!'"

Note that an apostrophe is not used with 's' to make a plural noun from a singular. This is a very common mistake and should be avoided. CORRECT - apple apples INCORRECT - apple apple's

5. Indicate a break or pause within a sentence with the comma ( , ). This is another
commonly used punctuation mark. There are several instances where you might use a comma: o Use the comma when denoting an appositive, or a break within a sentence that supplements and adds information to the subject. Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, is the developer of the operating system known as Windows. o Use the comma when denoting a series. This is a set of three or more "list" items within a sentence. To save space in newspapers, some writers may omit the last comma. The fruit basket contained apples, bananas, and oranges.

The computer store was filled with video games, computer hardware and other electronic paraphernalia. o Use a comma if your subject has two or more adjectives describing it. This is somewhat similar to a series, except that it is incorrect to place a comma after the final adjective. CORRECT - The powerful, resonating sound caught our attention. INCORRECT - The powerful, resonating, sound caught our attention.

o Use a comma when referring to a city and state. It is also necessary to use a comma to separate the city and state from the rest of the sentence. I am originally from Freehold, NJ. Los Angeles, CA, is one of the largest cities in the United States.

o Use a comma to separate an introductory phrase (which is usually one or more prepositional phrases) from the rest of the sentence. An introductory phrase briefly introduces the sentence, but is not part of the sentence's subject or predicate, and it therefore should be separated from the main clause by a comma. After the show, John and I went out to dinner.

On the back of my couch, my cat's claws have slowly been carving a large hole. o Use the comma to separate two independent clauses. Having two independent clauses in a sentence simply means that you can split the sentence into two. If your sentence contains two independent clauses that are separated by a conjunction (such as and, as, but, for, nor, so, or yet ), place a comma before the conjunction. Ryan went to the beach yesterday, but he forgot his sunscreen.

Water bills usually rise during the summer, as people are thirstier during hot and humid days. o Use a comma when making a direct address. When calling one's attention by name, separate the person's name and the rest of the statement with a comma. Note that this kind of comma is used rarely in writing, because this is something that we do normally while speaking. Amber, could you come here for a moment?

o Use a comma to separate direct quotations. A comma should come after the last word before a quotation that is being introduced. It is not necessary to use a comma in an indirect quote. A comma is usually not necessary if you are not quoting an entire statement. While I was at his house, John asked me if I wanted anything to eat. An indirect quotation that does not require a comma. While I was at his house, John asked, "Do you want anything to eat?"

A direct quotation. According to the client, the lawyer was "lazy and incompetent." A partial direct quotation that does not require a comma.

6. Understand the difference between parentheses, brackets, and braces. o Use parentheses ( ( ) ) to clarify, to place an afterthought, or to add a personal comment. Be sure to include the period after the closing parenthesis. Steve Case (AOL's former CEO) resigned from the Time-Warner board of directors in 2005. Used for clarification. Here, commas can replace the parentheses. You will need a flashlight for the camping trip (don't forget the batteries!). An afterthought. Note that the period (full stop) follows the last parentheses not before the first. Also note that replacing the parentheses with a comma may not be entirely suitable here, and is better off with a period or a semicolon. Most grammarians believe that parentheses and commas are always interchangeable (I disagree). A personal comment.

o Use brackets ( [ ] ) to signify an editor's note in a regular piece of writing. You can also use brackets to clarify or to revise a direct quote so that it appeals to your own writing. Brackets are often used to encompass the word "sic" (Latin for thus), suggesting that the previous word or phrase was written "as is", with the error intended to be displayed. "[The blast] was absolutely devastating," said Susan Smith, a local bystander at the scene of the incident. Smith. "It was absolutely devastating!" the actual quote by Susan

o Braces ( { } ) are most widely used in denoting a numeric set in mathematics. Though generally uncommon, braces can also be used in regular writing to indicate a set of equal, independent choices.

{ 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 } Choose your favorite utensil { fork, knife, spoon } and bring it to me.

7. Know how to use the slash ( / ).

o Use the slash to separate "and" and "or", when appropriate. The phrase "and/or" suggests that a series of options are not mutually exclusive. "To register, you will need your driver's license and/or your birth certificate." o The slash is used when quoting lyrics and poetry to denote a line break. Be sure to add spaces between your slashes here. "Row, row, row your boat / gently down the stream / Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, / life is but a dream." o The slash can replace the word "and" to join two nouns. By replacing "and" with a slash, you suggest that there is equal important to both characteristics. Use these replacements in moderation to place greater emphasis where "and" may not do soas well as as not to confuse the reader. You can also do the same for "or", as in "his/her". However you should not use the slash to separate independent clauses, as shown below. "The student and part-time employee has very little free time." "The student/part-time employee has very little free time." "Do you want to go to the grocery store, or would you prefer to go to the mall?" "Do you want to go to the grocery store / would you prefer to go to the mall? This is incorrect.

Tips

If you write in a professional capacity, be sure to follow any guidelines or style guides provided by your employer. In some cases, their rules can be at odds with what you read here or elsewhere, but their rules always take precedence. For example, some companies use serial commas (a, b, and c) and others do not (a, b and c). Many grammar experts believe that parentheses and commas are often interchangeable when setting off information. While this is sometimes true, there are some cases where a set of parentheses might be more suitable, such as in indicating one's personal thought. Although dashes and parentheses have similar uses, remember that parentheses indicate a stronger "side notion" than dashes.

There are exceptions to the hyphen-dash rule. In making compound words, when one of the words is itself composed of two words, use an en dash ( ) rather than a hyphen, as in, "He took the ParisNew York route." En dashes are also used between numbers, as in page numbers or years, to denote a range. ("A discussion on personal finance is found in pages 4562.") The placement of punctuation marks before or after a closing quotation mark varies. American English leaves the punctuation mark inside the quotation if it is part of the quotation, "like so." (Commas and periods (full stops) are always put inside the quotation marks for a sentence in American English, regardless of whether the quotation has punctuation at the end. Other types of punctuation marks are put outside the quotation if they are not part of the quotation.) British English tends to leave the punctuation mark outside the quotation, "like so". o At times, British English will switch back and forth between the inside and outside, depending on the context. For example, interrogative quotations may keep the question mark inside the quotation, as in, "Do you like this question?" In formal writing, try to avoid excessive use of question marks and exclamation points. Most of your sentences should be declarative statements. Dashes are usually considered to be informal. You might want to replace the use of a dash with a set of parentheses, or even commas. Similarly, limit the frequency of dash use in your writing; they should be reserved to emphasize a couple of important points. If you decide against the serial comma in your work, make sure that the meaning of the sentence can stand without its use. Think about the classic example of a sentence in which the serial comma is needed: "My heroes are my parents, Mother Teresa and the Pope." If you find that a sentence seems to drag on, find a way to add a comma or two, so that it is easier on the reader's eyes. If a sentence becomes too long, then consider splitting it into two or more sentences. Never be afraid to have short sentences in your writing by splitting up long sentences that contain several points. Your reader will appreciate writing that is clear and concise with briefer statements, as opposed to a one-page paragraph with twenty words per sentence.

[edit]

Warnings

While using English punctuation inappropriately may help your writing to flow much more smoothly, generally creating a more "intelligent" appearance, don't overdo it. It's best to err on the side of omission than to add several superfluous apostrophes and commas. Try to keep the different languages' punctuation from each other, so you do not confuse languages and their punctuations rule with each other.

How to Speak Clearly

Speaking clearly and efficiently proposing your ideas is a must in modern society.

[edit]

Steps

1. Practice enunciating your words. Usually, a pen put in the mouth, horizontally, will force
you to enunciate your words more. 2. Speak slower. You have no idea how helpful it is to give your words an extra second or two to fully come out of your mouth. Pausing also works, because pausing allows the person you're speaking to to digest all of the words you've just said. 3. Practice your grammar. If your grammar is bad, your thoughts and ideas may not be perceived clearly.

4. Learn some vocabulary. Learning the right words to say certain things is also very
helpful. ...

[edit]

Tips

Try listening to yourself using a voice-recorder. Usually, this will help you determine what you would need to work on. When in a conversation, take some time to ask if the other person understands what you're trying to say. If they don't, try rephrasing what you just said. Keep it simple. Sometimes, a simple explanation is all you need to speak clearly.

[edit]

Warnings

When practicing with the pen to help you enunciate, don't choke on the pen. Make sure the pen is long enough to not move, slip, or fall into your mouth by accident. Remember to place your pen alongside your mouth horizontally of course, as this will be better for pronouncing certain syllables and won't cause you to choke or gag on the pen. Don't over think it when you speak to others because you may end up making the situation worse. Try to be natural--think 'flowy' as you speak, not "what else/next" to say. Feel 'flowy', take good, relaxing breaths and think of an image that brings soothingness, like swimming in a heated swim pool at night or drinking refreshing smoothies, to dancing to a favorite song or reading your favorite book.

Here are some tips to help you improve your English pronunciation. First of all, don't worry about not having a native-English accent. It's important to be able to speak clearly, so that people can understand you. However, it's almost impossible to sound exactly

like a native English speaker if you are learning English as an adult in a non-English speaking country. However, there are many things that you can do to improve your pronunciation and your speaking skills. 1. Listen to spoken English as often as possible. Listen to how speakers pronounce various words and phrases and "model" your pronunciation on what you hear. 2. Learn the phonetic alphabet. Use the phonetic alphabet page (at the beginning of most good dictionaries) as a guide to pronouncing new words. 3. Don't forget to learn the word stress of a new word. Every English word has its own stress, or intonation. For example, the word "believe" has two syllables (be and lieve), but only the second syllable is stressed. We say be'lieve and not 'be lieve. Your dictionary will show the syllable stress by an apostrophe (') before the syllable to be stressed. Word stress is important. In fact, it is more likely that someone misunderstands you because of wrong word stress than because of the wrong pronunciation of a sound. 4. Work out which sounds cause you most problems in English. Depending on what your first language is, you may have problems with certain sounds. For example, French speakers have difficulties with "th"; speakers of Mandarin have difficulties with "r" or "l", and Arabic speakers have difficulties with "p" and "b". 5. Practise the sounds you find difficult. A useful exercise is a "minimal pair" exercise. For example, if you have difficulty distinguishing between "p" and "b", try practising pairs of words which are the same except for the sound "p" and "b":

For example, "pair" and "bear"; "pond" and "bond"; "pie" and "buy" etc. 6. Be aware of intonation and sentence stress. Not all words in a sentence have equal stress, and generally only the "information" words (nouns and verbs) are stressed. 'Where's the 'pen I 'gave you? 'Where's the 'red 'pen I 'gave you? Where's the 'red and 'blue 'pen I 'gave you 'yesterday? The unstressed words (such as "the", "I", "you" and "and") don't carry as much "weight" as the stressed words. They become much smaller in length, and are almost abbreviated. For example, "and" becomes "un". Changing stress Sentence stress isn't "fixed" like word stress. In fact, you can stress words that are normally unstressed in order to highlight different meanings. For example: I 'love you. (Love, rather than just like.) 'I love you. (With the stress on I to highlight that it's me rather than another person who loves you.) I love 'you. (And nobody else.) Intonation There are a couple of easy to remember rules about intonation. Usually our voices go up at the end of the sentence to show a question, and down at the end to show a statement. Intonation is also important in "tag questions": You know him, don't you? (With rising intonation on "don't you?" to show it's a question) You know him, don't you. (With falling intonation on "don't you"

to show it's a statement you expect the other person to agree with.) 7. Learn to recognise spelling patterns. For example, "tion" on the end of a word is pronounced "shun", while "sion" can be pronounced "zhun". There are often many ways to pronounce a particular spelling pattern, but it certainly helps to know what the variations are. For example, the pattern "ough" can be pronounced "uff" as in "enough" and "tough", or "or" as in "ought" and "bought" or "oh" as in "although" and "dough". 8. Don't rush. If you speak too fast, the danger is that you could skip over some words, fail to pronounce them completely, or mix them up. If you speak too slowly, you might end up sounding unnatural. But it's better to speak slowly and clearly than too quickly.

Why We Can Help

Before we go any further, let us tell you who we are and how we can help. We are three English teachers with over 25 years of combined teaching experience. We all have Masters degrees and are highly trained English professionals. Our names are Kristin Dodds, Joe Weiss, and A.J. Hoge. Using the unique Effortless English system, we have taught thousands of adult English students around the world. Our students succeed and they succeed fast! We have helped thousands of students speak real English. That is why we know we will help you speak real English too.

Our New Method

When we started teaching, we realized that the old ways just werent fun or effective. We spent a lot of time studying research from the best English learning experts in the entire world - Dr. Stephen Krashen, Dr. James Asher, Dr. J. Marvin Brown, Dr. Ashley Hastings, Dr. Brenda Murphy, David Long, and Blaine Ray. Using the very best information A.J. Hoge created the most effective English teaching method in the world- the Effortless English method. He took the experts studies and teachings and combined them into a completely new method to teach English. This is the method we use to teach you REAL English speaking. This is not the method you learned in school!

Childs Play
Why is it that everyone tries to teach English to adults with books filled with grammar rules and endless vocabulary? With all of the research, one piece of information stood out from all the others: children learn to speak any language without textbooks, vocabulary lists, or grammar rules. They all learn by conversation and very specific methods. Children have always been the best English learners for that reason. This entire program is taught with REAL English conversations. That includes many of the slang and idioms used by native English speakers.

We call the specific rules of our method The 7 Rules of Effortless English. You have probably already read them in our email course. When taught correctly, English grammar is easy. But the correct way is not by studying grammar books. Grammar can be easy and effortless but you must learn like children do. If you want to become like a native speaker, you dont need to learn when you are a child. You need to use the same methods as a child. Dr. J. Marvin Brown

How To Speak Like A Native Speaker

In Just 6 Months. Dear Friend,

Are you a good English reader, but not a GREAT English speaker? Do you feel that textbook English is not teaching you the REAL English you need? Is it difficult for you to understand native speakers conversations? Have you already improved your English, and are you ready to go to a whole new level?

Have you noticed that native speakers rarely use the formal English you learned in school? Why not? Because you learned formal English in school, but most native speakers use casual Conversational English when they speak to each other.

Old Learning Methods

Most English conversation programs dont teach English conversation. The conversations in most books are fake- they are not real. Rather, these conversations are merely two actors reading a text. Thats why textbook conversations are very different from real English conversations.

To understand native speakers, you must listen to real conversations not fake textbook actors. To speak easily to native speakers, you must use real conversations and lessons that help you understand them. So how do you understand real conversations? The secret is to use both real recorded conversations and the Effortless English system.

Your Success Is Here

You CAN speak REAL English to real native speakers. What is real English? It is the English that native speakers use in real conversations. REAL English includes slang and idioms. REAL English includes real pronunciation used by real people not the pronunciation you hear on CNN or the BBC. REAL English comes from real conversations. Close your eyes.
