QB Trinidad E-Mail Blast Maria Martinez CGD 218 Visual Literacy in Business Instructor: Michael Bevis June 6, 2011

QB Trinidad E-Mail Blast If Youre Looking for the Ultimate You found It! This is the QB Trinidad slogan. We have launched our first e-mail blast communication this past Friday, June 3, 2011. It was designed and created by yours truly to encompass all those interested in the deer ranching business, which includes breeding and hunting. Through the use of a composite of visual communication styles, such as typography, charts, and images, we hope to appeal to new ranch owners while maintaining a close breach with our current customer base. The idea of generating a different form of marketing effort resulted from low sales and high advertising costs. The company was spending over thirty five thousand dollars per year in marketing efforts, subscribing to newsletters, and publishing in journals where we were only one among the rest. It was during the second week into my CGD 218 Visual Literacy in Business course that I submitted my idea of marketing using e-mail based efforts to the owner of the ranch, my boss, and he allowed me the opportunity to work on the project. The program that I used to create and track the results of this new and inexpensive way of advertising is Vertical Response. I had to brainstorm on what message we wanted to portray. We agreed that what we needed was to get the ranch name out there and make a stance among the deer breeding and hunting businesses. The first type of visual communication used was typography. I mounted the slogan If Youre Looking for the Ultimate You Found It at the very top of the page in maroon colored font against a black background to make it stand out. Immediately following is the logo in big type font. My purpose was to force the reader to see the logo and create interest in what was to follow. Throughout the e-mail I used different font

types and sizes to separate the sections which I covered. The contrast of background and the color of text were also manipulated to encourage the reader to stay focused and continue browsing. Due to privacy laws any e-mail that is sent out to a number of addresses must include a link to allow users to unsubscribe. I adhere to this policy but manipulate the font size to make it appear small and unattractive compared to the rest of the thread. The second form of visual communication used was charts. If you are not familiar with the deer breeding business, the charts do not make too much sense, but allow anyone to clearly see the time and effort spent gathering data and how organized the business is. This is a plus for QB Trinidad, since it says we are knowledgeable in the deer business. The charts show pedigree. It basically describes who the sire and the dam of a particular deer are and follows the genetics of that deer. In the business it is important to have a biologist keep good recordkeeping and certificates on all the animals to be able to consider plotting these diagrams. The best bred deer are the most expensive. Semen sales are also available on proven genetics for future generations of deer. Incorporating charts that are easy for the eye to see and simple to follow certainly give the reader more information to want to learn more about us. The third form of visual communication used was images. Consistent with Frederick R. Barnard who said, One look is worth a thousand words, I opted to use real live photographs of deer currently in our inventory. Close up pictures show the size and styles of the deers antlers. They range from typical frames to non-typical frames and the differences can clearly be appreciated. The pictures of the doe were taken in their natural habitat surrounded by green vegetation. This is important since the nutrition of deer is

fundamental for developing big strong antlers. The pictures of the bucks, on the other hand were photo-shopped to make them appear majestic. These bucks are used to breed and their appearance is important to appeal to other breeders who want to add them to their genetic pool. There are many options when it comes to making your business known, but it is how well you can make it appeal to your customer base, that will make it or break it. Through the use of visual communication QB Trinidad will stand out among the rest by using a combination of typography charts, and images incorporated into e-mail blasts that will certainly be a success.
